Harley-Davidson. Exporting Freedom.

Probably the best marketing video of Harley-Davidson Motor Company in a very long time. Shot at the York Plant, Pennsylvania (Fabricates, paints and assembles Softail and Touring motorcycles for worldwide distribution. 3,106 employees)

This warms my heart, even though I am Canadian, makes one proud. Way to go USA, keep up the good work.

You can criticize Harley, but it’s a great video by a great American company.

Message? Don’t count us out. The country, Harley. Great video. Pushing nationalism. And it always work. Well done

They “export” a lot of big calibre projectile shells for the military as well.No problems with recalls, warranty or complaints from “end users”.They sure exported the freedom to get a stable jobs and benefits at their factories out the door on the slow boat to India.

I understand all about “get on your bike and feel the freedom” here in the States.
But I wonder how the people feel in the countries that HD is sending the bikes to. Those people already have 2 wheels, and that is ALL they have. I would think that they are tired of riding bikes, they want a Cadillac, a Lincoln, something with a roof on it , and doors. Something that can fit the whole family in comfort.
After 20 years of no other form of transpo other than a scooter, wouldn’t they prefer a nice, luxurious car?

We are the bench mark. Tucker out any other company ? Massaging the youthful brain the no one priority / export.

Well I’m along way from the USA and I’m not American but it made me feel good.
Nice to see Russia and China at the end there.
    It is very well done.

Terence, Your the most negative person I can recall in recent times

Cyril Huze has created a most valuable blog on Motorcycling, with information on Motorcycles, shows and events that is not available in one place any where else.

If you are part of Britain. Your lot have exported most of the worlds problems, you created the Israel ,Palestine problem.
The India Pakistan nuclear stand off.
And so many others it would take a book to list them all.

Now this is a motorcycle blog, if you cannot keep it to motorcycling. I suggest you look for one of the many other blogs that may cater better to your predilections

Please keep it within the realms that this blog was created for.

The video is particularly strange in places. The “exporting of freedom” to Saudi Arabia? Would they know what to do with it?

Great video and nobody is as Patriotic as Americans 🙂

Forgive me if I don’t do cartwheels over a company’s marketing campaign. American craftsman building some of the most desireable motorcycles on the planet. Yep. And Harley Davidson threatens to move their plant to Mexico, fires them, and replaces them with unskilled temps. But hey, the CEO got a 3 million dollar bonus. Yep, there’s a model manufacturers the world over can be envious of.

It’s supposed to make the people who watch it feel good. Same as watching Forrest Gump or an Obama speach…

    God Bless America !

I like the video. Even though HD does a lot of things
I do not agree with they are still a great American
success story and I am proud to be an American.

  15. 15 Jawz Dec 2nd, 2013 at 10:08 am

I’ve toured the York facility and I was amazed to watch the various lines run. As an American it made me feel proud. I’ve never owned a metric street but then again I was born and raised un Wisconsin.

  16. 16 Woody's Dec 2nd, 2013 at 12:00 pm

I’m very grateful to have been born in America and am proud for what she purports to stand for. Lately the lines have been rather fuzzy. Folks who are impressed with the production shots of the York plant would love the Hyundai Plant in Alabama, Ford’s most modern new plant (in South America), Mercedes Tennessee plant, etc. That’s the only reason I may have appeared unmoved by the American mfg. awesomness theme of the video. They have every reason to be proud of the York Plant compared to when it was a recently converted ammo plant, but state of the art assembly really doesn’t have as much to do with freedom as it does the balance sheet. I’m glad they’re profitable, but the flag-waving ad theme turns me off..

  17. 17 Boomer Dec 2nd, 2013 at 12:02 pm

Nice plant. I’m glad they highlighted the 103 motor as it is the perfect match for this motor. Go any bigger and things get dicey unless better parts are used such as the crank and oil pump. I looked up the url for this video to share with others and noticed it had been posted a year ago and somehow we all missed it. Interesting. Harley makes such beautiful bikes. I do wish they would consider better technology with certain parts that are known to fail far too often.

Good vid, left out one thing though: The majority fo the people who believe in this great country right now are working in our garages, basements, decks, rumpus rooms, and back yards, building our own vehicles, cabins, plumbing, house additions, etc., and mostly with hand tools.

Manufacturing anything in the USA is tough, making products here and profit, well ask the shoe manufacturers or any of the hundreds of other industries that used to be here. Despite Terrance Tory’s redicoulous comments HD is manufacturing the HD motorcycles right here, in Pennsylvania and Missouri and Wisconsin and bikes that are sold in some countries that would have to be re-assembled there if made here are assembled there. Now that’s not too difficult to understand is it? Seems to be for some though, or are they just looking for any excuse to bash HD or any “big business”? Unions by the way aren’t workers, they are business set up to use workers, profits come from union dues and the money goes to lobby the government (democrats) for more scams that chase more business out of the USA. Much more complicated than that but as much as workers deserve good representation, those reps don’t deserve to have entities larger and more profitable than the companies the workers get paid by. You don’t like how much a CEO makes, just become a shareholder and vote. Same as unions but the company actually creates product and jobs and hopefully profits. And America still stands for freedom, is the freeist nation in the world and Harley-Davidson is definitely a symbol of this great country AND of freedom, separately and collectively! It’s the only reason I ever rode this brand when it was a terrible ride and why I still do, and am proud to sell this brand today, and am especially proud that it became the excellent ride that it has become, and the great American company it is as this video demonstrates! Thankyou!!

  20. 20 THR ADS Dec 2nd, 2013 at 2:55 pm

Greta editing, great music, great voiceover – hereat commercial – and that what good commercials do … sell.

Where did that HD carb ship in from? They didn’t show that.

Kinda offended I can’t be free riding around on my Honda?

  21. 21 richard Dec 2nd, 2013 at 4:18 pm

It appears the video and narrative have made a few people uneasy/uncomfortable. Some people are just not happy unless they something to whine about. This video is about a great American made motorcycle, being built by dedicated Americans, in a technologically up to date factory. All the naysayers can do is find “this or that” to whine about. They conveniently overlook the positive aspects of providing good paying jobs (yes, including some temp jobs) , a great product, and millions of hours of riding pleasure for millions of riders. Most of all it shows that the Harley Davidson tradition, pride and culture emanates from the people who design, tool for, and build these icons, a most important aspect of providing any outstanding product or service.

  22. 22 BobS Dec 2nd, 2013 at 8:29 pm

I’d rather be thought of as a whiner than an ass kisser. In order to be great one must earn it, not claim it and accuse me of a lack of patriotism if I call BS on the claim. Look at how marvelous the Emperor’s robes are!

  23. 23 Jezza Dec 3rd, 2013 at 2:17 am

So James just another Crazy Kiwi, your political side-swipe at Britain has precisely what to do with motorcycles? I quote:

“If you are part of Britain.
Please keep it within the realms that this blog was created for.”

So as the self-appointed Cyril Huze Post police, may I suggest you take your own advice? The fact that you missed the irony in your own idiotic statement speaks volumes!

  24. 24 Terence Tory Dec 3rd, 2013 at 3:14 am

Jezza,I think he directed his comments at me thinking I was a Brit.Of course he’s a white boy (I imagine) on Maori land in New Zealand that the British grabbed a few centuries ago.Blame the British for that I guess (?).I bet he rode British irony before he hitched up on a Hog.I like the guy.

    It’s all good.Peace Love Dove.

  25. 25 Blackmax Dec 4th, 2013 at 6:39 pm

Yes, it is a good piece of propaganda
but given the tenor of articles seen (on this very blog)
Full time workers told to go Part-Time
A CEO that make a 3 million dollar bonus
More concern about stockholders vs the workers
who put the very item that enable these great profits together
I’d think really hard and twice about H-D
(see preceding article on H-D profit report & dividends)

  26. 26 James Just another crazy Kiwi ! Dec 5th, 2013 at 3:43 am

Yes Jezza it was a swipe at Terence not Britain

I love my Queen Liz !!! she is still our head of state. Rather have her than a politician. And Terence, I am a white Bogun living on a small rock in the South pacific.

Yes I had English bikes. first one was a 650 BSA Gold flash when I was 17.
Of course AJS and Norton were Scottish and Triumph was started by some Germans,.
BSA originally made Guns to shoot the enemies of Britain
The Davidsons are particularly proud of their Scottish heritage.

The Scottish are particularly good at designing things and have been innovative engineers
Sorry Jezza I made a mixed up hash of most of that, I have a warped and frayed mind Grasshopper.

    Beam me up Scotty

James, thanks for expanding my vocabulary. I resemble the American redneck hillbilly comment, or at least there are many in my ancestry and my immediate family.

1.Australian person, usually caucasian,of uncouth and lower class background, residing on the edge of civilisation. Characteristics of a bogun include, proudly sporting a mullet hair cut, extremely small shorts,a grease stained t-shirt underneath a flanelette shirt of some description.A bogun’s natural habitat is any suburb of australia with low property values,in a house that generally has 2 or 3 cars up on bricks in the front yard with no wheels or missing vital mechanical parts. One of the cars must be a ute(utility vehicle).Boguns are genrally spotted with a stubbie(screw top beer bottle) or bong (pot smoking paraphernalia) in hand.
1.Look at that dickhead bogun, if he was american we’d call him a redneck hillbilly.

2.That bloke talks so much like George W. Bush, he must be a bogun!

  28. 28 James just another Crazy Kiwi Dec 6th, 2013 at 6:26 pm

Big Wave you just destroyed my world.

I thought bogun was a New Zealand word…sigh

Usually over here it is a black jeans wearing mullet hair cut with a V8 or loud
motorcycle. drinks and Smokes. his girl is in very tight jeans or scantily clad. Both have lots of tattoos

    It is an honourable title.

to be fair I’m a biker not a bogun, but the word is cool.

We have bogun towns…full of boguns…brilliant

Corporate bullshit. H-D is the benchmark to the world in the same sense as the World Series has participants from outside North America.
