Although the XL Ironhead engine has some well known issues and will need some TLC on a regular basis, it is still a popular engine used by many pro, garage and garden shed builders. For models years 71 to 77, EMD conceived a die cast aluminum primary cover with CNC-milled gasket surfaces, with the same OEM dimensions and tolerances. Available for 71-77 and 77-90 Ironhead in raw, semi polished, black or contrast cut finishes. $665.00 (gasket, gear selector seals not included) .
Also available, a matching cast aluminum ‘second skin’ cam cover fitting over the OEM one. It can be notched at the upper front to make room for your OEM breather. You can also opt to relocate the breather to a lower position, especially if you’re cutting the OEM cam cover up to visually ‘split’ the motor from the transmission. Also available in raw, semi polished, black or contrast cut finishes. $163.00.Hheld in place with 3 supplied Allen bolts and spacers. At EMD USA.

Bert feared his wife Peg wasn’t hearing as well as she used to and he thought she might need a hearing aid. Not quite sure how to approach her, he called the family Doctor to discuss the problem. The Doctor told him there is a simple informal test the husband could perform to give the Doctor a better idea about her hearing loss.
‘Here’s what you do,’ said the Doctor, ‘Stand about 40 feet away from her, and in a normal conversational speaking tone see if she hears you. If not, go to 30 feet, then 20 feet, and so on until you get a response.’
That evening, the wife is in the kitchen cooking dinner, and he was in the den. He says to himself, ‘I’m about 40 feet away, let’s see what happens.’ Then in a normal tone he asks, ‘Honey, what’s for dinner?’ No response. So the husband moves closer to the kitchen, about 30 feet from his wife and repeats, ‘Peg, what’s for dinner?’ Still no response. Next he moves into the dining room where he is about 20 feet from his Wife and asks, ‘Honey, what’s for dinner?’ Again he gets no response.
So, he walks up to the kitchen door, about 10 feet away. ‘Honey, what’s for dinner?’ Again there is no response. So he walks right up behind her. ‘Peg, what’s for dinner?’ ‘For F*-#?? sake, Bert, for the FIFTH time, CHICKEN!’
Founder and President Of Boss Hoss Cycles, Inc Monte Warne was looking to retire and since May 2015 was looking for a buyer of his company producing Chevy V-8 powered motorcycles. Warne advised me today that that his company was since yesterday under the ownership of new CEO Ricky Dietzand and of his brother Travis Dietz acting as President. The Dietz brothers, both from south Louisiana, have been Boss Hoss Cycles dealers and owners since 2006. Now former owner Monte Warne will still serve as an adviser for the company remaining headquartered in Dyersburg, Tennessee.
“We liked the motorcycle so much, we bought the company” said Ricky Dietz. The brothers priority is now to complete about a dozen of Boss Hoss motorcycles to be transported to the the Florida Daytona 500 race and show on February 21 for demo rides purpose. The nimble midsize Indian Scout offers exhilarating performance. Logically, many owners will want to turn it into a modern Café Racer.
And to stimulate the Scout’s ergonomics, among other additions and substitutions to perform for the complete Café Racer styling , a must is the addition of a small fairing around the headlight.
Arlen Ness offers one ready for prep and paint, and that you can just bolt-on. MSRP $379.95.
I bet you don’t because you never read in full your touring bike manual. And if you ask the dealer servicing your bike, he probably doesn’t know either.
Exceeding weight limit is directly linked to many tire failures and sometimes with for consequence the bike getting out of control. Of course, how much you can safely carry depends of your weight and the one of your passenger in full riding gear.
To make sure you don’t ride on an overloaded motorcycle, you want to stay within the manufacturer’s recommended weight rating for your specific model. A law firm from Texas (I have no affiliation with it and don’t recommend it) uploaded on its website a very easy to use weight calculator for Harley-Davidson, Victory and BMW tourers, including model year 2016. You just enter your weight and the one of your passenger, and you immediately get the residual weight you can safely carry. Go to Motorcycle Safe Weight Calculator.
In the commercial below paid and produced a few years ago by Triumph, but that most of you never watched, Triumph makes fun of itself with a very tongue in cheek tone. Instead of arguing that Triumph makes better motorcycles, the UK manufacturer turns into derision the competition always talking up their products. British humor?
The first ever Custom Scout Contest reserved to official Indian dealers has resulted in 36 cool machines from the US and abroad that you can now see online and vote for. The custom Scout dealer contest didn’t impose any specific rules or restrictions, any bike theme, cost or build style. But each project had to feature at least 3 genuine Indian aftermarket parts. Starting today and everyday through February 19th, 2016 you can vote online at Indian Project Scout.
The top 3 finalists will be announced on February 26th, 2016. The 3 corresponding dealers receive an all-expenses-paid weekend trip to the 75th annual Daytona Bike Week for themselves plus a guest. Indian Motorcycle will host a special award ceremony in Daytona Beach on Friday 11th March, during which a panel of celebrity judges will select the ultimate winner of the ‘Project Scout: Build a Legend’ program, with party goers voting for the winner of the Fan Favorite award.

The Sturgis Buffalo Chip® has kicked off what has for the past five years been helping shape the next generation of motorcycle industry experts with its Buffalo Chip Challenge industrial education and scholarship program. In partnership with some of the industry’s leading professionals, the Challenge program enables local high school students to take hold of dreams that might otherwise seem impossible. The free program is returning in 2016 to give participating students an opportunity to earn $8,500 in scholarships and work hands-on with the nation’s top builders to create award-winning custom motorcycles.
Spearfish student Sidney May, winner of a $5,000 scholarship in 2015, is one of many who have been taking full advantage of the program. As a Spearfish High School junior, May served on the pit crew for “Girl Power Racing” and worked as an apprentice technician at White’s Queen City Motors, training to earn the title of an ASE Certified Student Mechanic and GM Certified Technician. During this time she never missed a day of the Buffalo Chip Challenge program and maintained a spot on the school’s “A” Honor Roll. “I absolutely loved working on the bikes! “ May said. “I was so proud when I saw the Harley and Indian sitting in the parking lot as our months of hard work came to an end.” Continue reading ‘Buffalo Chip Challenge™ To Prepare Next Generation of American Motorcycle Builders’

Those who dislike theme bikes will not be too happy to see a Harley Flathead Model U being reborn under the colors of Bonnie Elizabeth Parker and Clyde Chestnut Barrow, known by most under the first names Bonnie & Clyde. Yes, the 2 criminals who traveled the central United States during the Great Depression, robbing and killing people. The 1967 movie featuring Faye Dunaway as Bonnie and Warren Beatty as Clyde, “romanticized” somewhat the couple’s run from the laws. Doesn’t matter that this custom project seems to give them the status of heroic legends. At least, under the effort of a shop called Ironborne Motorcycles, this 4-speed late 1948 model Flathead (side valve 74 cubic inch, 1200 cc) is back on the road.
So, for some among you who would prefer a plain restoration, go beyond the paint job although it has merit because it is faithful to the photos that Bonnie Parkers took herself before abandoning her camera when with Clyde she was obliged to run from police in the Spring of 1933… There is also a lot of merit in correctly rebuilding a H-D Flathead model U (the WW2 military version was model UA, with the A added for Army), a civilian motorcycle produced in limited numbers immediately after World War II and considered relatively rare. Motor is now fitted with a Dell‘Orto carburator. Continue reading ‘Custom 1948 Harley Flathead Model U. Bonny & Clyde Inspired.’
Ken Nagai is one of the few, last-standing, six-figure motorcycle designers and builders. Detail-driven with no limit regarding the time spent to handcraft one-off custom motorcycles and to machine limited edition custom parts, Nagai’s offering is for those looking for state-of-the-art accessories.
Ken’s Factory USA Twin Can engine dress up parts are probably the prettiest and most sophisticated ones you can buy for your Twin Cam.
It includes rocker covers, cam covers, transmission top and side covers, pressure plates and pushrod covers. Shipping anywhere in the continental USA for $10.
When Ken Rutherford sat down to design the world’s first hydraulically actuated lowering system for Twin Cam powered Softail models, his concept was straight forward: Create a high quality, over engineered, easy to install lowering kit that allows riders to adjust the stance of their Softail without losing the stock ride quality of the bike.
Slamtail is unique because it attaches to the stock OEM shocks and uses a key fob to operate hydraulic rams that adjust the ride height of the bike while retaining the stock ride quality at any height. To go one step further, buyers now can also purchase the additional Spring Pre-Load Adjuster Kit so they can firm up the ride for better handling by eliminating “spring sag” with the included pre-load adjuster wrench. This accessory kit must be installed at the same time the Slamtail is going in while the shocks are apart and is a highly recommend addition if you regularly carry a passenger. The wind in your face. It’s one of the major reasons some ride motorcycles and many bikers are disinclined to do too much to block the wind, beyond wearing eye protection such as sunglasses or face shields, mostly to deflect bugs, dust and flying rocks.
According to water and eye researcher Sharon leyne, even with sunglasses and face shields, motorcycle riding may lead to a condition called “biker’s dry eye” or “motorcycle dry eye.” Sunglasses and face shields may not offer adequate eye protection because other dehydrating factors also play a role. The tear film that covers and protecting our eyes is 98% water. Continue reading ‘About Biker’s Dry Eye’
Yokohama, Japan. Located on the Tokyo Bay, the second largest city in Japan by population after Tokyo, is where on December 6, 2015 was held at the Pacifico the 24th edition the famous Yokohama Hot Rod Custom Show featuring the best of the best of last year’s hot rods and motorcycles. 650 custom motorcycles, 300 hot rods, 270 vendor booths, pinstriping and airbrush artists, and Japanese style mayhem.
Maybe the best custom show in the world, the event lasts only one day! with the doors opening at 8 a.m. for an official number of 15,000 visitors in 2015. Impossible to absorb all the candy in one day, but I hope that these pictures by Jeremy DiStefano – a marketing executive Custom @ Chrome Europe GmbH – give you a pretty good idea of what the Yokohama Hot Rod Custom Show is all about. An interesting feature offered to visitors is the 9 a.m. ride-in of custom motorcycles and cars with spectators gathering around the center of the Pacifico building. Loud, very loud… I should be in Japan for the 25th edition and promise that I will give you a longer and deeper report of this exceptional event.
A “modern” Islamic couple, preparing for a religious wedding meets with their Mullah for counseling. The Mullah asks if they have any last questions before they leave. The man asks, “We realize it’s a tradition in Islam for men to dance with men, and women to dance with women. But, at our wedding reception, we’d like your permission to dance together.”
“Absolutely not,” says the Mullah. “It’s immoral. Men and women always dance separately.” “So after the ceremony I can’t even dance with my own wife?” “No,” answered the Mullah, “It’s forbidden in Islam.” “Well, okay,” says the man,
“What about sex? Can we finally have sex?” “Of course!,” replies the Mullah, “Allah ho Akbar! Sex is OK within marriage, to have children!” “What about different positions?” asks the man. “Allah ho Akbar! No problem,” says the Mullah. Continue reading ‘Joke Of The Week’
It took 3 court-ordered auctions to sell all the assets (intangible and manufacturing assets) of Erik Buell Racing of East Troy. At the auction held yesterday January 13 at the Walworth County Circuit Court, Liquid Asset Partners located in Grand Rapids, Michigan bought Buell Assets for a little bit above 2 million. Bruce Belfer from Atlantic Metal Group in New Jersey who won the 1st auction with a bid at 2.5 million was unable to raise the funds to close the deal and was denied again at the second auction for the same reason.
It was in a surprise announcement in April 2015 Erik Buell Racing (EBR) informed its 130 employees that the company was stopping all its operations. During a Wisconsin court proceeding equivalent to a bankruptcy court in other US states, Earlier, India company Hero Motocorp – owner of 43% of EBR’s shares, acquired EBR’s consulting business for $2.8 million
After yesterday’s 3rd auction, court appointed receiver Michael Polsky mentioned in his legal filing that the bid received by Liquid Asset Partners, being in excess of the liquidation value of EBR remaining manufacturing assets, is in the best interest of all creditors.
I immediately called Bill Melvin, President of Liquid Assets Partners, to get more information. Below, his official press release to me.
“The sale of Erik Buell Racing was approved today in Walworth County Circuit Court with Grand Rapids, MI based Liquid Asset Partners as the winning bidder.
Erik Buell Racing (EBR) is an East Troy, WI motorcycle manufacturer that ceased operations in April 2015. EBR was involved in a venture in 2014 with Hero MotoCorp Ltd., which ended in a settlement in July 2015. EBR was founded by Erik Buell in 2010 after Harley-Davidson ceased operations of the Buell Motorcycle Company in 2009. Liquid Asset Partners was successful in purchasing the assets after a nine month process by the Court Receiver. Liquid Asset Partners has a long history in the motorcycle industry working with major manufacturers & distributors to sell assets and intellectual property. They plan to run a simple two part sale process. Part one is working to secure a new buyer who has the proper experience, financial ability, and desire to continue manufacturing EBR’s motorcycles for many years to come. Part two will be a sale of excess assets to help streamline the operations. Continue reading ‘Breaking News. Erik Buell Racing Sold At 3rd Auction To Liquid Asset Partners For 2 Million. Buell Could Be Back In Business.’

The AIMExpo Championship of the Americas was held for the first time in Orlando this past October. The winner of the Free Style class, Jeremy Cupp of LC Fabrications (top picture) will go on to Germany next October to compete in the AMD World Championship held in Cologne, Germany during Intermot courtesy of S&S Cycle, Biker’s Choice and AIMExpo. However, Jeremy will not be going alone, This year’s second place winner, Larry Moore of Moore’s Customs (left picture below) will join him from his win alongside Jeremy at the Last AMD World Championship held in Sturgis.
Bob Kay, with his partner in crime, Jeff Najar has been trying to put together a Team America ever since that last championship stand in Sturgis. The AMD World Championship is now held every other year in Germany. Now if you were paying attention you would have noticed I said Jeremy also won a chance to compete at Intermot at that last Sturgis event. Being the gentleman that he is and his desire to make the inaugural showing of Team America stupendous Jeremy stepped up and offered his second opportunity to George Stinsman of Chaos Cycle (below right picture). The last member of Team America 2016 is Sean Ruddy of Chop Deville (bottom picture) who won his position at the Harley Museum 110th Anniversary Pro Invite Show.
“Our dream to bring some of America’s best to Germany for a heads up custom competition is finally a reality. Of course we could have never funded this venture without the help of AMD, the Harley Davidson Museum and AIMExpo. Thanks to AIMExpo and the MIC we will now have a minimum team of 2 competing in future AMD World Championships of Custom Bike Building as the winners from the AIMExpo Championship of the Americas Free Style class progress forward. “We are all looking forward to some stiff competition and some great party time, ready or not here we come” said Bob Kay.
Standard low-beam motorcycle headlights are next to useless in dark corners, The concept of a “leaning headlight” is not completely new. But this one installs in 15 minutes in any Harley and Metric 7” headlight. As you lean your bike over. The J.W. Speaker Model 8790 Adaptive Low Beam LED headlight fires up additional angled lights to fill in the blind spot you get when you’re cornering in the dark.
The lamp will automatically activate additional LEDs and optics on either side to keep the beam pattern on the road where it is needed for leans up to 30 degrees. Over 30 degrees the light is still there, but does not increase anymore.
If you like the concept, you will have to go over the Star Wars look and accept the big price, the J.W. Speaker Model 8790 Adaptive Low Beam LED Headlight retailing from $700 to US$800. Just make a search for the cheapest online distributor. The symmetrical beam pattern is approved for DOT and ECE so pretty much legal everywhere in the world for use on a motorcycle. The lens is marked with DOT and ECE approvals to keep police officers happy.
