U.S. transportation regulators on Wednesday called for stronger rules for motorcycle helmets, proposing additional safety requirements in an effort to crack down on “novelty” helmets that do not meet federal standards. The Department of Transportation said such uncertified helmets are unsafe and do not protect riders in crashes despite being sold and marketed for use on the road.
Its proposal would further define what makes an acceptable motorcycle helmet, from its thickness to its compression ability, in an attempt to help riders and state law enforcement officials identify inferior helmets. Such proposed changes aim “to reduce fatalities and injuries resulting from traffic accidents involving use of motorcycle helmets” that fail to meet federal standards, Department of Transportation regulators said.
Deaths stemming from motorcycle crashes are disproportionately high, they said, in part due to the high number of motorcyclists wearing substandard helmets. Novelty helmets generally cover a smaller area of the head, have thin liners and lack the ability to absorb the force of a crash, the department said. They are often sold with disclaimers stating that they are not for highway use “yet they are sold to highway users and used in great numbers by motorcyclists,” the regulators said. Daring acrobats, death-defying stuntmen, fire-breathing women, theatrical performances and side-show oddities are all part of the spectacle guests of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip® will watch this August in a three-ring Circus.
In ring number one the Air Sex Championships will merge real life with imaginary sex twice daily on the Buffalo Chip’s showcase stages. Comedian and host Chris Trew will invite guests to take part in his politely offensive and utterly hilarious interactive stage show on the Jägermeister and Bikini Beach stages. And, the International UniMotorCyclist Society will battle it out at the PowerSports Complex on Saturday, Aug. 8 in a series of drag races like no other, all on one wheel with no brakes or steering. Those badass bikers on one wheel will also host some of the zaniest events at the rally including sticky whipped cream wrestling, slippery lesbian oil wrestling, funky burlesque Mardi Gras contest and more all open to any adult wanting to win big cash prizes.
In ring number two is the Seattle Cossacks. For more than 75 years this group of motorcycle acrobats has been building human pyramids high atop moving, vintage, Harley-Davidsons. Audiences will witness authentic daredevils performing tricks on motorcycles older than the Sturgis Rally. They will bring their rolling show to the CrossRoads at the Buffalo Chip with three shows daily Tuesday through Thursday, including their death-defying “Wall of Fire” show at 7 p.m. Continue reading ‘Three-Ring Circus On Steroids Coming This August To The Sturgis Buffalo Chip®’
LLOYDZ Motor Workz has long been the leading name in high performance products for Victory Motorcycles. In fact, LLOYDZ has been developing and producing performance parts for Victory’s since they started coming off the assembly line back in 1999. Ever since the announcement that Polaris Industries purchased the Indian Motorcycle name, LLOYDZ Greer Motor Workz has worked hard to offer air cleaner kits and slip-on mufflers for Indian Motorcycles equipped with the Thunderstroke 111″.
For the rider that wants to utilize the stock Thunderstroke cover. With a retail price of $209.00, this kit (p/n IMC-205) has 170% more filtering area than stock, and boasts horsepower gains of 16% over stock and torque gains of 14% over stock when used in conjunction with LLOYDZ performance slip-on mufflers and a PC-V Power Commander. What makes this filter unique is that it has filter media on face of the filter directly in front of the throttle body allowing it to not only pull air in from the sides of the filter, but also directly in front of the throttle body. The cover remains in the stock location so it doesn’t interfere with your leg like some of the other aftermarket filters on the market. For all Indian Thunderstroke 111″ motors, Retail for $209.00
For those who want to add a custom look, a billet chrome cover and chrome screen (p/n IMC-215) to protect the filter and give it a nice clean appearance while utilizing the same high flow filter as IMC-205. Retail pricing is $398. LLOYDZ Motorworkz Tel. 845-744-4889. Or on Facebook.
In 1995, Cartoonist, Illustrator and faithful reader Paul Jamiol did a cartoon to denounce biker violence.
Last Sunday’s deadly shootout in Waco, Texas between motorcycle clubs inspired him to rework his cartoon.
In this new version Jamiol pens his comment on the incident, showing the dark cloud and negative effect it has on all motorcyclists with the public at large.
A northern Italian beach whose name is Lignano Sabbiadoro where, as in most summer resorts, activities are limited to swimming, tanning and shopping. Except in May during Biker Fest International when entertainment expands the time of a weekend to watching bikes cruise the Adriatic Sea coast, demo riding the latest models from motorcycle manufacturers and admiring the 100+ custom bikes competing in the Italian Championship. Biggest prizes include 3 trips to the 2016 Daytona Bike Week edition and 3 chances to qualify for the upcoming World Championship Of Bike Building. The Terrazza a Mare (Terrace On The Sea), is the most important monument of the city, housing shops, bar, a solarium and during last weekend some of the most recent custom motorcycles created in Italy that I will feature later more in details. The difference with any USA biker event? Well, the Italian lifestyle, a much louder and festive crowd. No drinking without singing and no singing without drinking until the sun rises again… Add a very sexy bike & car wash, bands, airbrush demos, body painting, stunt shows, etc. The 3 top winners are: “199 RS” by Asso Special Bikes. “Cheiron” by STE SIL Bike. “Flyin’ Wood” by Apuana Garage / 0585 Choppers. Dubai in the United Arab Emirates is known for luxury shopping, ultramodern architecture, white-marble domes and a lively nightlife scene. And probably will never for its yearly 3-day Dubai Motorcycle Biker Build-Off…Doesn’t matter to Abu Dhabi, UAE based Mario Kypriandes from Chopper Kulture. Until now, he’s got no problem finding clients from all over Europe wanting to commission his shop for a “Wing Nut” Bobber or Chopper. (his creations almost always feature wing nuts hardware, now his trademark) And when very busy Mario Kypriandes accepts to do a build-off, it’s almost always to finish a bike for a client, live front of an audience! For this project, from briefing by a German client to a 3-day final assembly front of spectators, Kypriandes had only 30 days to complete this custom Panhead…
Almost an impossible mission knowing that the client had a specific request for a Pan power plant and that the Emirates builder didn’t know where to get one in such a short time. Eventually, he found a 1963 provided by Billy of BB Racing, but in a rather desolate condition with cracked cases. The original factory frame was beyond repair and was replaced by an FX type one ordered from Paughco. Billy rebuilt the 74” engine entirely, shipped both the new frame and restored motor to Abu Dhabi where Kypriandes started to plan the fabrication of all the many missing parts. Of course no way to find them locally. Already knowing that this project would consume all his time and energy, would dominate all his thoughts during 4 weeks like no other built before, right away he picked ”Dominatrix” as the bike name. When it comes to big bore kits, the bigger the better. That’s the idea behind S&S Cycle’s 98” and 107” bolt-in big bore kits. S&S has offered 97” and 106” kits for a while, but these new kits are bigger. Aside from the additional cubic inch of displacement, the new 98” and 107” kits are better for a couple of other reasons.
The pistons are one reason. Both the 98” pistons and the 107” pistons are made by CP Pistons, and feature pop-up domes to increase compression. The 98” piston has a 10cc pop-up and the 107” piston has a 3cc pop-up. S&S increased the squeeze a little because most performance cams just work better with a bit more compression. But the pistons have another great feature. They can be used in stock cylinders that have been bored out to the required 3.937” bore size. That could save you some money. Continue reading ‘Muscle Up. S&S Big Bore Kits Just Got Bigger. Now In 98” And 107” Sizes.’
The film makers encourage everyone to pledge at least $5 to help produce a new Motorcycle movie about Sturgis named “I AM STURGIS”. In hopes of galvanizing viewers to donate on any level to their Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds to produce this new Film, a free on-line screening of “WHY We RIDE” is available for 7 Days. Just jump HERE.
“We don’t want to stop with just one movie. We want to continue to inspire more people, and that’s why we want to make “I AM STURGIS,” says James Walker, producer of “WHY WE RIDE”. “This is a movement now, and we want it to flourish. Sturgis is the entire motorcycle microcosm–it’s got everything: the camaraderie of the tribe, the visceral power of the bikes, the cacophony of humans and machines coming together, communing, riding, bonding. We want to show this world to people, because the instinct behind it, the gathering and the sharing, the competition and the rush–it’s universal. This isn’t just about being a motorcyclist; it’s about what drives us as people. All we ask is that everyone who has seen “WHY WE RIDE” or who view it for free on our site over the next week– to please donate to the “I AM STURGIS” Kickstarter campaign. If everyone gives even $5, it will allow us to continue telling these inspiring stories about our motorcycle culture.”
Response to the”I AM STURGIS” crowd-funding drive has been strong among the professional motorcycling community. South Dakota Tourism, City of Sturgis®, Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally, Harley-Davidson, Sturgis Motorcycle Museum, The Buffalo Chip Campground, Law Tigers, Uhl Studios, Michael Lichter Photography, Sedlak Studios, Hot Leathers, Bonnier Corporation, UBM Advanstar Progressive International Motorcycle Shows, J&P Cycles and Whitewood Campground and Event Center are just a few of the motorcycling business interests that have committed support to “I AM STURGIS.” With 19 days remaining in the campaign, Walker and company hope for a final push from individual motorcycling enthusiasts and Why We Ride fans to get them to their goal. The filmmakers believe in their fans and hope the 7-day free screening of “WHY WE RIDE” will serve as a gesture of goodwill and inspiration.
