Triumph Motorcycles America announced the Brutal Beauty Tour. The tour will make over 50 stops at Triumph dealerships and unique venues across the U.S. and Canada to showcase the iconic Bonneville Bobber, Street Scrambler, Street Cup, T100 and T100 Black.
The tour kicked off in downtown Los Angeles, Calif. with the North American unveiling of the new Bonneville Bobber. Triumph invited celebrities as actors Norman Reedus, John Hensley, Theo James and E! News’ Jesse Giddings all had a chance to swing a leg over the new motorcycles.
Over 20,000 miles will be covered with nearly every state line being crossed. To the north, the Canadian tour schedule includes 14 stops in cities across the country. The 2013 factory Road Glide® Custom, the low version of the shark-nose Harley-Davidson Classic, is based on a single-spar, rigid backbone frame with a stout swingarm developed to withstand the demands of long-haul touring riders and today’s powerful engines. So, the only alteration Fred Kodlin thought necessary, and the one from which “Blue 40 Two began to acquire its stance, was to rake the factory 29.2° neck to 38°. A task accomplished with his own proprietary weld-in frame piece (TUV approved.) To the frame is now attached a superb 2” longer inverted front end from Italian ODC and holding a 30” 5-spoke wheel from Metalsport. The 74th EICMA in Milan (Esposizione Internationale Ciclo & Motociclo)is still going on at time of this publication. The 1st EICMA was in 1914 and today the event is one of the largest platforms in the world, illustrating all the different aspects of the two-wheeler world.
The exhibition fulfills both B2B and B2C objectives with 2 trade days and 4 retail days. Statistics are quite impressive: 1500 exhibitors (40% Italian, 60% rest of the world) coming from 45 different countries, an indoor exhibit of 200,000 sq. meters covering 20 halls and and outdoor activities covering 85,000 sq.meters.
All major 2-wheel manufacturers are present, many of them announcing new models during the 2 trade days. Small manufacturers and custom builders show their creations in a specific Custom Area and a US Pavilion regroups all American vendors. You often ask me about the size of Polaris Motorcycles division (Indian, Victory and Slingshot brands) versus Harley-Davidson and how each American brand is growing in relation to each other.
First, as a corporation (meaning including all its products, motorcycles, snowmobiles, ATV’s, etc) Polaris had a tremendous growth during the last 10 years. Revenue is up 169.7% versus Harley-Davidson 6.50%. During the same period Polaris net income is up 229.9% versus Harley-Davidson only 30.1%. Being extremely diversified, off-road vehicles first, then motorcycles are mainly responsible for Polaris excellent results.
But motorcycles are the new growth engine for Polaris. This segment, starting in 2013 with the Indian relaunch, saw a gain of 1.8% of the overall motorcycle market share versus a loss of 3.6% for Harley-Davidson for the period 2013-2015. Polaris motorcycle sales, excluding PG&A (parts, garments & accessories) went from $220 millions in 2013 to $608 millions in 2015.

I have known custom builder Larry Curik since the mid 90’s, like him touring the winter show tour, our custom bikes competing for the same trophies and bragging rights. When the big recession of 2008 hit , like so many, Larry had to find another way than the custom scene to make a decent living. So, he launched a new business named Allied Precision Arms and started to market his own riffle Bi-Pod, manufacturing it with the same precision and quality that made his reputation working on custom bikes. Especially in Europe, but also in the US, the long modern chopper is still attractive to many. And this one is so sophisticated in its details that you could think that the custom motorcycle hey days of the 95-05 decade were never gone… The project got started with a beautifully finished 93” engine built by Berry Wardlaw of Accurate Engineering. It’s a generator/alternator bottom end that is graced by the only set of billet cylinders ever produced by Accurate. To top that off, 2 rear cylinder heads were used, a job requiring welding, and a custom ground camshaft to move lobe positions. The generator is actually a housing that contains the voltage regulator and rear brake master cylinder reservoir. Larry Curik built the stainless steel intake manifolds holding a Mikuni HSR 42 carb , capped off with gorgeous racing stacks. The Billet covers are one-off parts as well.
