Published by September 9th, 2015 in Customs and Seats.Remembering John Britten, His Beautiful And Technically Advanced V1000 Race Bike.
Published by September 9th, 2015 in Builders, Editorial and Events. On September 5th 20 years ago, John Britten died from cancer at the young age of 45. The handsome and charismatic engineer is remembered for his V1000 race bike still considered today as one of the world’s most beautiful and technically advanced motorcycles. A machine that he designed and built in his private garage in Christchurch, New Zealand’s south island, then went to beat on the track those of rich racing teams from Harley-Davidson and Ducati.
John Britten studied technical engineering in the US, then returned to his native New Zealand to take care of the family construction business. His passion for motorcycles and racing led him to competition, with a first race in 1986 on a Ducati Darmah. Not satisfied with his performance, he first redesigned the Ducati’s fairing, then went to modify several times the engine leading him to create his first motor from scratch with the help of the Denco company, eventually giving birth to the V1000. Overnight Fire Fully Destroyed The Sturgis Full Throttle Saloon
Published by September 8th, 2015 in Editorial and Events. This morning Tuesday September 8, the Sturgis Throttle Saloon is a burned out shell. Around midnight the main building was on fire and then extended to the northwest corner where is located the Sloonshine Distillery where 500 gallon of grain alcohol were kept.
Because there are no fire hydrants or any water supply on the Full Throttle Saloon, water had to be trucked in portable reservoirs, making fighting the fire more difficult. Fire crews from Sturgis, Piedmont, Whitewood, Fort Meade and Vale were did fight the blaze and this morning are observing the smoldering rubble. The Full Throttle Saloon is owned by Michael Ballard and has been in the past the topic of a reality television show on True-TV. A tv crew was again on location during the 75th rally to film a new episode. The cause of the fire is under investigation. (photos @ Sturgis firefighter Jeff Potter)

Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum Unveiled Plans For Major Expansion. Last year, Guinness World Records named the museum as the world’s largest collection of vintage and contemporary motorcycles, with 1,398 unique exhibits. The 144,000-square-foot museum, which opened in 2003 at Barber Motorsports Park, will grow by an additional 85,000 square feet. All five stories will be expanded, and a glass atrium is a key feature of the new space. The expansion will help the facility maintain its role as the global benchmark for motorcycle collections. In addition to displaying more motorcycles, some type of traveling exhibits are also planned. The museum will remain open during construction, and the work is expected to be complete in the fall of 2016. Officials did not disclose the capital investment for the project. No public incentives are involved. Birmingham-based Williams Blackstock is the architect for the expansion. The general contractor is BL Harbert International, also based in Birmingham.
Ex-Harley-Davidson Executive To Build The Royal Enfield Brand In The US From Milwaukee. In 2014, less than 1000 Royal Enfield motorcycles were sold in the US. A newly hired Milwaukee team with years of experience at Harley-Davidson plans to change that with a re-positioning of the brand and an aggressive distribution and sales strategy. Royal Enfield intends to become the worldwide number one brand in the middleweight market, from 250cc to 750cc. “ With smaller, lighter bikes than many other brands, Royal Enfield could have a wider appeal than what’s on the market. The bikes also have a smaller price tag between $5,000 and $6,000,compared with Harley’s Street 500, the Milwaukee manufacturer’s only comparable bike at almost $7,000” said new US President Rod Copes, a former head of global sales and customer service for Harley-Davidson. A guy is driving around the back woods of Montana and he sees a sign in front of a broken down shanty-style house: “Talking Dog For Sale” He rings the bell and the owner appears and tells him the dog is in the backyard. The guy goes into the backyard and sees a nice looking Labrador retriever sitting there. “You talk?” he asks. “Yep”. the Lab replies.
After the guy recovers from the shock of hearing a dog talk, he says “So, what’s your story?” The Lab looks up and says, “Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so… I told the CIA. In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running…” Continue reading ‘Joke Of The Week’
Max Ness Had A Vision. And Mixed It With A Victory Cross Country.
Published by September 3rd, 2015 in Builders and Customs. At 21, Max Ness is the youngest member of the Ness family, the other son of Cory Ness, and is already involved in custom bike building although he is still attending the University of Arizona where he is studying Retail and Consumer Sciences with a minor in Business administration. When we met in Sturgis, he told me about the bike he rode 2800 miles to the rally. A Victory Vision to which he grafted a Cross Country rear end! Surprised by such a concept, Cory Ness was the first to confirm to me that it looks very good, So, I asked Max to send me a few pictures for review…
In 2011 Max bought a 2011 Victory Vision with some rear end damage. At that time, his grandfather Arlen was already doing some Vision rear end conversions using the Ness Down-N-Out Fender And Stretched Saddlebags Kit. His father Cory had always been talking about doing the Cross Country rear section conversion, but never ended up getting it done. Max liked the idea and decided he wanted to be the first one to try it.
How difficult was it? Max tells me it took only 2 months, including paint and of course some customization using Ness Catalog parts. The build went smoothly, the most challenging part being the relocation of the ABS system and getting it to work and fit correctly with the cross country rear end. So why doing it, you may wonder? Evidently for styling reason, but also because of the advantage provided by the big storage capacity of the Victory Cross Country saddlebags. Max told me he had no difficulty to pack 2 weeks of clothing and of necessities for its 2-week trip and stay in Sturgis. Continue reading ‘Max Ness Had A Vision. EMD Motorcycle Design Versus Custom Parts Distributor Zodiac. If It’s Not Plagiarism, What Is It?
Published by September 2nd, 2015 in Driveline, Editorial and Legal.During the last 12 months I had the opportunity to feature the custom parts designed and cast by EMD (Esteves Motorycle Design). Rocker, primary and cam covers all conceived with a vintage vibe for XL, Evo, Twin Cam Harley-Davidson modern bikes. Original parts sold both in the US and Europe and now extremely popular on both continents. Of course, EMD expected that these cool parts would inspire (or much worse…) other parts manufacturers, China being usually the prime suspect…
Inspiration is one thing (nobody, no company can deny being inspired by what others are doing) But plagiarism, or the act of copying someone’s idea, creative work and passing it off as your own, is a much more serious matter. It’s true that in some countries it’s not necessarily illegal. In others it is illegal only when your ideas/products are protected by a patent, a very costly and time consuming commercial process, especially if protection from plagiarism is sought in several countries.
Last weekend I was contacted by EMD’s owner and industrial designer who provided me with a series of documents showing what looks like knockoffs of their original products being sold by Zodiac NL headquartered in the Netherlands, the oldest and one of Europe largest distributors of parts and accessories for Harley-Davidson motorcycles. EMD alleges that their research about the manufacturer of these knockoffs didn’t lead them to China, but to Poland where a company called “Chopper Garage USA” (as far as I know it’s not a US company, nor doing any business with the US) would cast the copies of their parts and sell them to Zodiac for distribution in Europe under the brand name of “The Factory”. (to hide the country of origin?) Just look at the parts and tell me if you think they are knockoffs or not.
Of course, Zodiac would have difficulties denying having knowledge of all the parts created and sold by EMD during these last 4 years since they are featured in catalogs, online, in ads and on many well known custom motorcycles (included the recent Jesse James’ Copper Bike.) Inside the cast copies featured here (Primary and Cam covers for XL Evo), are engraved signatures of both “The Factory” and of “Zodiac.” Packaging of these parts is in a wood box, not a common way to do it… but exactly the way EMD does it. Inside Zodiac’s catalog, the alleged copies are presented as “American Made”. I guess it sells better with bikers than “Made In Poland” if it’s effectively where they are produced. “American Made”, if not true, would also fall under the category of deceptive advertising and of unfair commercial practice , acts both illegal in the USA and Europe. I must add that EMD doesn’t seem to know for sure if the copies were commissioned by Zodiac or if Zodiac only bought the copies (knowing or not they were knockoffs?) from Chopper Garage USA. Straps And Tie-Downs For Your Motorcycle. The Problem Is The S-T-R-E-C-H.
Published by September 2nd, 2015 in Accessories and Editorial.Trailing your motorcycle or other toys? You set your ratchet or cam buckle straps as tight as you can. You go on the road and when you stop for gas, you check your cargo. The straps are dangerously loose. Why do most strap manufacturers, on the back of their packaging, instruct their strap owners to pull over every 20 to 50 miles to check and retighten your straps? The explanation is in the comparison below.
ShockStraps use 3,800 pound polyester webbing instead of lower cost nylon used and sold by most companies. The company states that they provide superior shock absorption without coming loose. Available in an assortment of colors in 6′, 10′ and 19′ Lengths, black or red. Video demonstration at ShockStraps. Order and questions at sales@shockstrap.com
Klock Werks Flare™ Windshield Now Available for Indian Chieftain and RoadMaster
Published by September 1st, 2015 in Accessories, Chassis and Customs. Now Indian Chieftain and RoadMaster model motorcycle riders can enjoy the benefits of touring with a Klock Werks Flare™ Windshield. The patented Flare™ Windshield design features “hips” at the sides that re-route the wind away from you while adding downforce to the front-end of the motorcycle to improve stability. The flip at the top of the Flare™ redirects air up and back as clean, less turbulent air for rider and passenger.
“A stock shield simply pushes air. So any air that escapes around it is choppy, turbulent air, that can make your helmet shake, your glasses fly up. Often a rider will think getting a taller windshield will solve the issues. The answer is how the air is directed, and the shape of our Flare™ re-directs the air,” explains Brian Klock. “Many times, a rider doesn’t realize how uncomfortable it is, until they try a Flare™ Windshield. Triumph Motorcycles Fined $2.9 Million for Failure-To-Report Case On Steering Defect
Published by September 1st, 2015 in Builders, Editorial and Events. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that it investigated after the company recalled more than 1,300 motorcycles for a defect that could reduce steering capability, and the company filed a late response to a NHTSA Special Order. Yesterday August 31, 2015 the NHTSA imposed a $2.9 million civil penalty against Triumph Motorcycles Ltd. and Triumph Motorcycles (America) Ltd. for violations of Safety Act reporting requirements and failure to fully respond to the agency’s communications.
“Manufacturers must comply with their reporting obligations. The law requires it, and public safety demands it,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “When companies fail to meet those obligations, we will hold them accountable.” Under a consent order issued to Triumph, the company must pay a $1.4 million cash penalty and must spend at least $500,000 meeting a series of requirements to improve its safety practices. An additional $1 million in penalties could become due if the company violates the consent order or if additional Safety Act violations emerge.
The penalty stems from Triumph’s September 2014 recall of more than 1,300 motorcycles for a defect that could reduce steering capability and increase the risk of a crash. This April, NHTSA began an investigation into whether Triumph had violated the requirement to report the defect in a timely manner, and into other potential violations, including failure to submit quarterly reports on recall completion rates. New Old Style Speedster. Begging For Dirt Or Grass.
Published by August 31st, 2015 in Builders, Customs and Editorial. No doubt that this new old iron is going to provoke a lot of reactions that I hope will be positive because of its originality and superb detailing. When I discovered it, I just wished that German artist, craftsman and builder Uwe Ehinger from Ehinger Kraftrad had chosen a less common name than Speedster for this very impressive creation.
As always, a personal and professional background explains why you are doing things and the way you are doing them.
In the case of Ehinger, his motorcycle knowledge was acquired very young studying and documenting “archaelogical motorcycle finds” , mostly old racing bikes, then later traveling to several countries in Europe, North & South America & Asia to hunt and unearth antiques and classics from Harley, Indian, Brough Superior, Norton, etc. that he resold to avid independent antique motorcycle dealers and collectors. In a book called “Rusty Diamonds”, Uwe Ehinger tells the stories of his countless journeys, of his emotional discoveries and how, armed only with an analog camera in the middle of nowhere, he was able to contact potential buyers at a time and from places where there was no internet to be found…
Being inspired by the past, being faithful to it, but being able to push yourself to not duplicate and never imitate what was done before requires what I call “creative courage”. Just look at the motor. The 45° v-twin engine looks like a Harley Knucklehead but upon inspection it is quite different. The CAD designed Knucklehead cylinder heads are paired to a 1937 four cam bottom end of a side valve Harley-Davidson U. The OHV heads feature an open valve train with a set of rockers machined out of a solid block of aluminum. A 1200 cc that will wake up the imagination of many custom motor builders. For driveline, a Harley four-speed transmission and a narrow 1” open belt primary. For ignition, a Wico magneto. Continue reading ‘New Old Style Speedster. Begging For Dirt Or Grass.’
2015 American International Expo In Orlando (October 15-18) My Interview With V-Twin Director Bob Kay.
Published by August 30th, 2015 in Builders, Customs, Editorial and Events. There is no doubt that just after a couple of years, The American International Motorcycle Expo (AIMExpo) has changed the way The Powersports Industry does business with dealers and consumers. As a matter of fact, in 2015, it’s now the only B2B and B2C North American Powersports Trade Show. For its anticipated return to the Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center (OCCC) this fall October 15 to 18 (general public days are October 17 and Sunday, October 18), the AIMExpo will feature a large V-Twin presence of manufacturers, part vendors and custom builders with indoor and outdoor activities during all weekend. I asked Bob Kay, AIMExpo’s V-Twin Director, how he organized all the V-Twin industry activities and what dealers and consumers can expect during this 2015 edition.
Cyril Huze. One year ago, The Marketplace Events Motorcycle Group, producers of The American International Motorcycle Expo (AIMExpo), hired you as their show V-Twin Director. Your mission was to work closely with the V-Twin industry that you know so well to develop the AIMExpo’s activities in this important market segment. Tell me what has been your strategy to acquire a powerful V-Twin offering for vendors, dealers and end users. What can they expect during the upcoming 2015 edition
Bob Kay. First and foremost our plan from the beginning was to integrate the V-Twin and custom markets into AIMExpo rather then create a separate area that segregates this key segment of the motorcycle industry. However, we recognized that V-Twin dealers and consumers may not necessarily want to walk the entire show trying to locate their favorite products exhibitors. So we created a natural flow that would attract V-Twin exhibitors, dealers and consumers. As you enter the show floor you can head toward the “Made in America” area which features many V-Twin exhibitors as well as other prominent American companies.
As you come out the back side of “Made in America” you will find yourself in the middle of the AIMExpo Championship of the Americas / AMD Custom Bike Show, and if you follow that across the hall you will see many of your favorite exhibitors on both sides of the aisle. When you reach the other side of the hall on Saturday and Sunday you will notice that the Media Center has been converted into a Garage Party with builder and supplier exhibits, live music and the special feature, the “Chopper Legends Showcase.” I was humbled by the positive response from the V-Twin and Custom industry that has been my life for the past 40 years. Companies like Barnett Tool, Cobra, Gardner Westcott and James Gaskets positioned themselves in “Made in America” alongside returning V-Twin companies. American Dealer Magazine, S&S Cycle, Biker’s Choice and Vee Rubber jumped right in to support the AIMEXpo “Championship of the Americas”.
ACE Café, S&S Cycle, and Biker’s Choice, Cycle Source Magazine, Born to Ride Media, Kiwi, Jason Paul Michaels, Leticia Cline and Kyle Shorey are committed to making Garage Party the coolest celebration of the V-Twin Culture. Our goal is to broaden the appeal of Florida as an October motorcycle destination. AIMExpo represents an opportunity for exhibitors and dealers to network within the industry on the broadest possible level to expand and grow business. A company can do their installs in Daytona where that traditional rider has come to get a great deal, but at the same time take care of their industry networking at an truly international show. There are many other V-Twin companies displaying at AIMExpo. For a complete list go AIMEXpo. The show is very well run but more importantly is attentive to the needs of their exhibitors, dealers and consumers. It is called WIN, WIN.
Cyril Huze. The AIMExpo is both an indoor & outdoor show at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. Describe precisely the V-Twin activities and their schedule. And are V-Twin test rides also available?
Bob Kay. Let’s start with “Made in America”. This area is designed to showcase American ingenuity and feature companies where Made in America is part of their company DNA. We have had requests from Europe and South America for easier access to American brands, hence “Made in America” While it is a natural place for many V-Twin vendors you will also see American brands that focus on other segments. The AIMExpo Championship of the Americas represents an opportunity for an American builder (it includes North, Central and South American builders) to compete in the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building in Cologne, Germany for 2016. AMD has come to stand for the best in custom bike design , engineering and execution. Our association with AMD has already attracted some of the best builders to showcase their latest builds. The “Chopper Legends” is a special no-compete showcase of choppers and diggers from the 70’s , 80’s and 90’s. Pat Patterson of Lead Sled Customs will host this showcase of some of the coolest custom bikes around.
We will have Harley test rides provided by Orlando Harley Davidson. The staff form Orlando Harley will go out of their way to accommodate certain model requests. I suggest you come early on Saturday and Sunday due to the popularity of this feature. There will also be UTV and ATV test rides for those hunters and land owners that ride V-Twins. The “Garage Party” represents, which is also what AIMExpo is all about, a fresh and exciting way to celebrate our passion for motorcycles. It is sure to attract a lot of attention and will start things off Friday night at Orlando Harley with a builder meet and greet and live music. Live music Saturday night on the show floor hosted by Bill Dodge of Bling Cycles and followed by an after- party at the ALE HOUSE. Be sure to meet former Hot Bike Girl, the lovely Leticia Cline, serving as our ambassador. The feature I am most proud of is my collaboration with the Power Sports Business Institute to create the Brick and Mortar Success Guide. We have put together a group of valuable seminars for independent shop dealers that do not have the support of a large OEM franchise. Thursday classes will be focused on the business side and Friday’s focus will be on running the shop area.
Cyril Huze. The Bike Building “Championship Of The Americas” intends to be a major annual event of the Custom Motorcycle Scene. It’s because it will feature not only the best builders from the USA and Canada but also those from South America with a path to compete, expenses paid, in the 2016 World Championship in Cologne, Germany. Tell me who is eligible to compete, on which platforms, in which classes, and who will judge the competitors creations?
Bob Kay. This will be a world class bike show and that is why we affiliated ourselves with the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building to set the standard for our entries. We will have a Free Style Class in which the winner will advance to the 2016 AMD World Championship held in Cologne, Germany with $7500 in expenses paid courtesy of S&S Cycle and Biker’s Choice. We will have a pre-84 Retro Class, a Street Custom Class for bikes with OEM frames and drivetrains, and a Performance Custom Class for all out non-street legal competition bikes and street racers.
