Sturgis Dirt Track Racing Is August 4 At Black Hills Speedway In Rapid City

FlattrackracingThe perfect tie-in to the all-American Sturgis rally is of course Flat Track racing.  Mark your calendars for August 4, 2015 for the Black Hills Half-Mile at Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City, SD.

“Dirt track racing is uniquely American,” says Black Hills Harley-Davidson® GM/Co-Owner and event promoter Terry Rymer. “The AMA Pro Flat Track series is one of the oldest motorsports championships in the nation, which makes it a natural to tie in with one of the country’s oldest motorcycle rallies. This has been one of the most exciting seasons of AMA Pro Flat Racing in years and it is an honor to be able to bring the pros to Black Hills Speedway,” Rymer adds.

A huge fan of the sport, Terry attempted to bring Flat Track to Sturgis last year, but was rained out. “It wasn’t meant to be, but with it being the 75th anniversary maybe Mother Nature was right to suggest it would be better to run the race this year?” Tickets can be purchased at Black Hills Harley-Davidson®, Rapid City (I90 Exit 55)  Event schedule after the jump. Confirmed. Hero MotoCorp Proposal To Acquire All Erik Buell Racing Assets For 2.8 Million.

EBR14Erik Buell Racing (EBR) abruptly ceased operations last April. At that time Hero MotoCorp, through its US-based wholly owned subsidiary HMCL (NA) Inc, owned 49.2% of EBR, shares that the company acquired in 2013. As I announced last week, India based MotoCorp Hero proposed a settlement to acquire all the tangible and intangible assets of EBR, free and clear of all encumbrances. Hero MotoCorp being a public company, a stock market disclosure reveals that the transaction is for a total of 2.8 million.

EBR23At the time of the bankruptcy, EBR had an estimated $20.8 million in assets and $20.4 million in liabilities including $202,000 owed to employees. The settlement is contingent upon the approval of Hero’s board of directors and upon an agreement on August 6th of the Walworth County Circuit Court. The acquisition would permit Hero MotoCorp to continue with projects for which EBR was providing services.

Although not officially confirmed, it is probable that on all these projects Erik Buell would be back in a major role as the lead EBR consultant for Hero

Victory’s New Electric Motorcycle. The 2016 Victory Empulse TT. Triple-Digit Speeds In Relative Silence.

1VictoryTTEmpulse3Polaris sees electric as an important part of the company and is in the future of all their vehicles. As a proof, after working with Brammo for three years Victory is launching the 2016 Victory Empulse TT, a road-legal electric motorcycle featuring race proven electric power with the quickest charging battery on the market and a top speed over 100 mph.

2VictoryTTEmpulse33VictoryTTEmpulse3The Victory Empulse TT is built on the innovative design and engineering that produced the fastest U.S. electric motorcycle at the 2015 Isle of Man TT Zero race. Objective of this 1st Victory electric model? Of course to reinforce Victory brand image as being about American performance. Everybody in the motorcycle industry knows that more battery storage in less space at a lower cost is going to create new huge opportunities for manufacturers and riders. The Victory Empulse TT demonstrates that the company is ready to compete with the electric technology.

The Victory Empulse TT is a fully electric road-legal street bike featuring an aluminum beam-frame, adjustable suspension and strong brakes. It is announced as delivering outstanding overall performance, zero-emission output and has a torquey electric motor. “The Empulse TT was developed primarily as an electric motorcycle delivering a sporty ride,” said Victory Electric Product Manager Joshua Katt. “With dual ride modes – ECO and SPORT – to choose from and the addition of a gearbox, the Empulse TT is a versatile motorcycle that can be used for impressively sporty riding or as a casual commuter.

4VictoryTTEmpulse3The key features that allow Empulse TT to deliver a sporty riding experience include: fully adjustable suspension featuring a single rear shock and inverted front forks; dual-disk front brakes; lightweight cast aluminum wheels; the greatest lean angle in the electric class; and a sport bike-style riding position.

Steve Menneto, VP Motorcycles, said Victory Motorcycles is committed to expanding brand awareness and sales globally, and the Empulse TT will allow the brand to reach more markets. “This is a company that does not fear technology and progressive products and we want to be strong in the electric motorcycle segment,” he said.

The Empulse TT shares some DNA with the original Brammo Empulse R motorcycle. Victory has been working with Brammo since 2011, but in January 2015 Victory’s parent company, Polaris Industries, acquired Brammo’s motorcycle assets. Since then, Victory engineers worked with the Brammo product team to achieve improvements in battery capacity, display function and handling.

The Victory Empulse TT is capable of top speeds over 100 mph and it has a high-capacity 10.4kWh battery. The bike has a built-in battery charger and an easily accessible SAE J1772 plug atop the bodywork to the front of the seat. The bike’s Brammo Power Lithium Ion battery fully charges up in just 3.9 hours using a Stage 2 charger (available as an accessory utilising a 240V outlet). The Green Chicano Chopper

0Lycan-Customs-BBO_0151Lycan-Customs-BBO_0232Lycan-Customs-BBO_006The experience of the Mexican-Americans in the United States, their cultural, ethnic and community pride forged the “Chicano” identity. And a style applied to many forms of art easily identifiable since many years on custom cars and bicycles and more recently on motorcycles. It is my opinion that it would take only 8 to 10 great custom bikes celebrated by the media to see the Chicano style influence the current custom motorcycle scene. Although not pretending to be very functiona,l and whatever its excesses (gold plated accessories is a must in pure Chicano style), this Green Chopper is an interesting machine because it defies all current custom building trends. A fresh approach that will not let anyone indifferent. Hate it or love it…

Strangely, it was not built in South California, but abroad in Dubai by a young shop called Lycan Customs. After a series of calculations and sketches, a one-off skinny rigid chassis designed to work with a pair of 26” wheels was ordered in the US from Chassis Design Co., until the 30” size became available… Back to the drawing board and the Green Chicano became even more “Chicanoesque” than originally intended. Notice the extra clean radical mono shock front end, maybe or maybe not an efficient design. Continue reading ‘The Green Chicano Chopper’

Conflicting Official Statements About The Bonneville Salt Flats Condition

1bonnevilleEmail Received July 21st. 2015 Speedweek Has Been Cancelled.

The SCTA President and Race Director, Bill Lattin, along with the BNI Chairman, Roy Creel, spent this morning (July 20th) on the salt. The most they could find was 2 ¼ miles of salt suitable for a safe race course. The rest of the salt flats are either wet or wet and muddy. If the wet salt gets dry, future events could be possible.

JoAnn Carlson, Media Liaison, Bonneville Nationals

2bonnevilleEmail Received July 20. 2015 Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials And AMA Land Speed Grand Championship. We Still Plan To Race.

We are still running. We will be continuing to evaluate the conditions including a visit with our volunteer staff in the first half of August. Over the past two weeks there have been a lot of discussions about the state of the Bonneville Salt Flats and the section that is used for racing, the Bonneville International Speedway. Those discussions and the conversations about salt conditions have been full of speculation and concern.

Today, we would like to clarify what we will be doing to race motorcycles.

• We are still planning on racing.
• We will announce an “Official Event Course Condition Update” by the second week of August.
• There is over a month to BMST 2015 and this will likely result in a harder/better surface to run.
◦ Think about last year and how rapidly conditions improved between events!
• Not all of the salt, nor our course areas, are affected by the reported issues. Continue reading ‘Conflicting Official Statements About The Bonneville Salt Flats Condition’

Polaris Reports Record 2nd Quarter 2015 Results. Motorcycle Sales Increased 57% Compared To Same Period Last Year.

polaris-logoPolaris12Polaris23Sales, Net Income and Earnings per Diluted Share Increased Year-over-Year. Second Quarter Highlights: • Sales increased 11% year-over-year to a record $1,124.3 million • North American retail sales increased 11% year-over-year • Net income increased 4% to $100.9 million. Gross profit margin declined 166 basis points due to currency impacts and incremental manufacturing costs of $9 million related to motorcycle paint constraints • Motorcycle demand remained strong throughout the second quarter

This morning, Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE:PII) reported record second quarter net income of $100.9 million for the quarter ended June 30, 2015, an increase of 4% from the prior year’s second quarter net income of $96.9 million. Earnings per share were a record $1.49 per diluted share for the second quarter of 2015 compared to $1.42 per diluted share for the second quarter of 2014.

Second quarter results included additional manufacturing costs and inefficiencies approximating $9.0 million, as the Company worked to scale-up production and add capacity to the paint system at the Company’s motorcycle facility in Spirit Lake, Iowa. Sales for the second quarter 2015 totaled a record $1,124.3 million, an increase of 11 percent over last year’s second quarter sales of $1,014.0 million.

“Although production still cannot keep pace with demand, we are confident in our plans to further increase our motorcycle throughput in the second half of the year, and as such, are maintaining and narrowing full year guidance for sales and earnings per share. Innovation remains a cornerstone of Polaris’ success, and at our dealer show next week we will introduce our model year 2016 powersports lineup that will further extend our market leadership.” said Scott Wine, Polaris’ Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.Polaris-

Motorcycle sales increased 57 percent to $162.1 million for the second quarter of 2015 compared to same period last year
due to continued strong demand for Indian motorcycles and the new Slingshot® roadster. Victory, Indian Motorcycle and Slingshot North American retail sales increased over 80 percent during the second quarter of 2015 driven by Indian Motorcycle and Slingshot retail sales, while North American industry midsize and heavyweight motorcycle retail sales were flat with the second quarter of 2014. Demand for the Indian Scout®, Roadmaster® and the new Indian Dark Horse® drove an over 100 percent increase in retail sales for Indian Motorcycle during the quarter. Victory retail sales in the second quarter of 2015 were lower than the prior year largely due to poor product availability of the new Victory Magnum® and Magnum X-1®, a result of the paint capacity constraints in the Spirit Lake facility. Slingshot retail sales continued to perform well ahead of expectations as consumer appeal for the new 3-wheeled roadster remained high. Polaris has increased production to meet the ongoing strong consumer demand for Slingshot. Continue reading ‘Polaris Reports Record 2nd Quarter 2015 Results.
