The 1970’s Ducati Super Sport defined a new era and a new line of thinking for Ducati. A philosophy that would lead to the creation of the modern Superbike. Only around 430 to 450 have been produced and custom builder Bryan Fuller is one of many who, a few years back, fell in love with the 1974 green frame after admiring one at The Barber Motorsports Museum. He told me: “The torque and rumble is similar to a Harley but with smoothness and the ability to spin up the RRR’s! They are comfortable enough to ride all day, yet sporting enough to handle the hills or track. Hell, I even used mine to run errands! The 1971- 1974 Ducatis are for me some of the finest motorcycles ever made. They have it all: style, grace and power…”
The Ducati featured here was sourced in Texas, born as a 1974 GT., not as cool as the Sport or Super Sport with the Cafe Tail, and not being run since years was in pretty bad shape. Fuller had to rebuilt the motor, but did it following the Ducati Sport specifications. As all great builders will tell you, if you start working on an old machine with very few available original parts, you better off be connected with the experts in the know. While starring in the TV series “Cafe Racer”, Bryan Fuller met with Rich Lambrechts and Vicki Smith from DesmoPro. Rich helped Fuller, as he is one of the foremost experts on Bevel Twins. Bevel cut gears have to be shimmed to lined up properly and finding the shims is always the issue…Fuller and Lambrechts spent 3 weeks together rebuilding the 750 motor & driveline and also two 250 cc angles for a pair of “Dirty Duc’s” dirt bikes which are the current Fuller Hot Rod projects. In the USA, the motorcycle industry is getting some momentum from an economic tailwind. Polaris, with its Victory and Indian brands and Harley-Davidson are all going to continue to benefit from it all along 2014. During the 4th quarter 2013, Polaris motorcycle division picked up some speed mainly due to the revived Indian brand launch. Total revenue of both brands, Victory and Indian, almost doubled to 68.8 million, with almost all increase coming from the 3 new Indian Chiefs. But what is Polaris marketing and products strategy for Victory versus Indian and Harley-Davidson?

Pope Francis’ Harley-Davidson Sold For $328,000

The 2013 Harley-Davidson Dyna Glide Custom given to Pope Francis, by Willie G. Davidson as a gift during the Harley 110th anniversary celebration in Rome, was auctioned yesterday in Paris, France by auction house Bonhams. After a 6-minute bidding war, an unknown european bidder became Francis’s Harley owner for a price of 241,500 euros or about 328,000 us dollars. A Harley-Davidson leather jacket, autographed by Pope Francis, sold for 57,500 euros or about 78,125 us dollars to another happy bidder. Money raised from the auction goes towards renovating Caritas Roma’s Don Luigi di Liegro hostel and soup kitchen at Rome’s Termini railway station. The hostel and soup kitchen provide shelter and food for an estimated 1000 people daily.

Via sponsorship of the X Games Aspen, Harley-Davidson just showcased a pair of ice-racing Street 750 around a frozen lake doing upwards of 100 mph. It’s all part of a campaign to demonstrate that The Street is an entry bike for the youngsters looking for adventure but who can be intimidated by a big cc number bike. “I’d venture to say we have been in extreme sports since the early 1900s with flat-track racing. When you think about it, and what kids do today, this bike is perfectly poised. It’s all authentic to the brand” says Dino Bernacchi, head of marketing communications.

Harley-Davidson Raises Quarterly Dividend 31% to $0.275 and Authorizes 20 Million Shares Buyback

Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE: HOG) declared a quarterly dividend of $0.275 per share, or $1.1 annualized. This is a 31% increase from the prior dividend of $0.21. The dividend will be payable on March 7, 2014, to stockholders of record on February 19, 2014, with an ex-dividend date of February 14, 2014. The annual yield on the dividend is 1.8 percent. In other action, the Board authorized the Company to repurchase up to 20 million shares of Harley-Davidson, Inc. common stock. The Board authorization is in addition to existing share repurchase authorizations. As of the end of 2013, 8.6 million shares remained on prior board-approved share repurchase authorizations.

5 years ago, the event organizers wanted to create an event centered around the idea that the greatest bikes were the ones built, restored, re-worked, re-invented and re-imagined for a reason. The concept: to give give builders, artists, craftsmen a place to tell their story and make some friends with other like-minded folks. A motorcycle show for motorcyclists by motorcyclists.

The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum And Hall Of Fame Now Offering Mobile Audio Tours

If you carry a mobile phone, and I am pretty sure you do, you are now able to get an audio tour of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame. Powered by OnCell, the tour will allow visitors to use their mobile phones to hear additional information about items exhibited in the museum.
“For a long time, we’ve wanted to offer more interactive exhibits,” said Christine Paige Diers, Executive Director. “Our new grant funding from Sturgis Rally Charities will allow us to begin that process.” To take part in the tour, visitors with cell phones will simply have to call a designated phone number, then enter various “Stop” numbers as they are walking through the museum. Visitors using smart phones will have the same opportunity either through a phone number or use of QR Codes throughout the museum.

Electronic fuel injection and ignition systems need to be updated as often as motorcycle manufacturers upgrade them. As a result of changes that Harley-Davidson has made to their 2014 models that use CAN Bus, “Twin Tec “Twin Scan 3” will not work on certain models without being upgraded. This upgrade is now available and you will need to return your existing Twin Scan 3 to them. The total cost, including return shipping is $25.00. Twin Tec will update the firmware, add a new wiring harness and instructions with a CD.

For a custom builder, it’s quite unusual to be commissioned to turn a race bike into a street one. But Stefano Venier told me he was very excited at the idea of re-working a Ducati 999S Testastreeta to make it what may be the fastest custom bike you can see on the road.
The Ducati 999 (say triple nine or nine-nine-nine) was designed by Pierre Terblanche, and produced from 2003 to 2006. It is known as an extremely high performance, race oriented motorcycle with the finest handling of that time.
