The US States Where Motorcyclists Can Legally Run Red Lights

chlightWe all had this experience. Waiting an excruciating time for the red traffic light to turn green. And for some riding to work, it’s a daily experience. The reason are the intersections sensors unable to detect light vehicles with not enough metal like motorcycles.

Confronted to this situation, some take illegal and potentially dangerous initiatives like running the red lights. But as a matter of facts, some states have what is called “Safe On Red” laws allowing motorcyclists to legally run red lights if following some safety rules, like waiting a minimum of time and making sure if it’s free of cross traffic or pedestrians.

But be warned that the “Safe On Red Law” is NEVER a valid excuse for the biker since in all states motorcyclists and cyclists are required to proceed with caution and yield to other vehicles or pedestrians using the intersection. States with this type of laws are listed after the jump.

operation-ride-homeFor 2014, the inaugural year for the new Indian Chief built in Spirit Lake, IA, the first 1,901 units were specially badged with commemorative serial numbers. Fast Motorcycle Industry News

cyril-Huze-fast-news1328133India Slowly Replacing China As Manufacturing Hub. Believe it or not, India is quietly becoming a production hub of high end vehicles for export to China. Harley Davidson, Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM and Mahindra and Mahindra have preferred to set up manufacturing facilities in India rather than in low cost China, and export the output to the land of the Dragon. Harley Davidson will export to China its new Street platform from its manufacturing facility in Bawal (Haryana). Currently Harley does not have any plant outside the US, except in Brazil and India and it clearly wants to leverage  its plant in India for exports to Asia. Both Street 750 and Street 500 will be manufactured in India, the only other production hub for the models apart from Kansas in United States. These bikes will be also be exported to Europe. Production and exports of both the models on the Street platform are expected to commence in mid next year. KTM Motorcycles AG, the European bike company owned at 48% by Bajaj Auto said is also setting up an assembly unit in China to be completed sometime next year. CKD (completely knocked down kits) from both India and Austria are likely to be exported to China. Mahindra & Mahindra group company is also looking to export electrical vehicles for the Chinese market to be manufactured in India.

Harley-Davidson Opens First Showroom In Vietnam. Harley-Davidson opened its first showroom in Vietnam last weekend. Harley-Davidson, was made popular in Sai Gon, now Ho Chi Minh City, during the Vietnam war in the 1960s. Recently, the motorcycle has become a firm favorite on Hanoi streets too. A number of world leading bike makers have set up official dealerships in the country in the past two years, including Ducati, Benelli and KTM. Triumph is expected to join the market soon. The Vietnamese market has seen significant growth with around 3 million bikes purchased annually. Five joint ventures currently dominate 95 percent of local market share, including Honda, Yamaha, SYM, Suzuki and Piaggio. Continue reading ‘Fast Motorcycle Industry News’

Wayne Pierce Family Museum 50+ Motorcycle Collection To Be Auctioned In Las Vegas On January 8th, 2014

H-DLast year’s smashing Las Vegas Motorcycle Auction at Bally’s Hotel & Casino represented several prestigious private collections, attracted buyers from around the globe, saw a world record made for the 1939 BMW Rennsport 255 Kompressor at nearly a half-million dollars, and achieved more than $2.6-million in total. Following that success, Bonhams is now very pleased to announce that it will represent another significant private collection at the January 2014 auction: 50-plus motorcycles from the extensive Wayne Pierce family museum, all offered at no reserve. The now-famous 4th annual Bonhams Las Vegas Motorcycle Auction will be held January 8th at Bally’s Hotel & Casino on The Strip. More information will be posted in the coming weeks at  Bohnams Vegas.

Among the machines is the earliest known Harley-Davidson Sportster in existence, a first-year model believed to be the 10th XL883 produced in 1957. Also on the block will be a restored 1933 Harley-Davidson VLE police bike that saw actual duty on the streets of a Chicago suburb before being cast in the Kevin Costner gangster movie “The Untouchables”

In business for 55 years, Pierce Harley-Davidson was one of the last remaining true “Mom & Pop” dealerships that formed the backbone of motorcycling in America. Wayne “Pappy” Pierce started his shop in the 1950s in a one-room tin shed in DeKalb, Illinois. From the beginning it was a family operation, with wife Eleanor tending the books. The Harley dealership quickly grew and at one point Triumph motorcycles were added to the showroom, several of which are included in this sale. Voxan Brand Reborn With The Launch Of An Electric Motorcycle

voxan1voxan2voxan3Voxan is the French motorcycle manufacturer launched by Jacques Gardette whose 1st prototype was shown in 1997 and the first production model released in 1999. The Voxan Roadster, Cafe Racer, Scrambler, Black Magic and Charade Racing (all using a 72-degree 996 cc V-Twin engine) had very little success, and although the company signed its 23rd dealer 2005, it struggled until it was liquidated in 2009. It is now a subsidiary of Monaco-based Venturi Automobiles producing high end e-automobiles, rebirthing the brand with the launch of the Wattman, stated to be the NEW most powerful (a couple has already made the same claim) electric motorcycle in the world…

voxan4Powered by a 200 hp (150kW) electric drive motor, Voxan claims it is not only the world’s most powerful e-motorcycle but also the first one to be built around an ‘Eco-Skeleton’ made up of its lithium-ion battery pack. There is no frame. The battery pack, charger, controller, and cooling system create the “frame” wrapped by a beautifully designed all polished aluminum body (designer Sacha Lakic) Continue reading ‘Voxan Brand Reborn With The Launch Of An Electric Motorcycle’

In addition, the show interviews celebrities like Willie G. Davidson and Dee Snyder of Twisted Sister, asking them to weigh in on both the work of Michael Lichter and the history behind the café racer.

“We are always so thrilled to be able to share Michael Lichter’s photography with our festival guests,” says Rod Woodruff, president of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. “So to have the ability to share his vision and talent with the rest of the world is an amazing honor.”

Dlux Gorilla Ape Hangers

azzkikr1azzkikr2Lots of Ape Hanger bars to choose from are produced by many custom shops. But these ones are a little bit different. They were designed keeping in mind the frequent problem encountered when running your wiring inside the bars.

The Dlux Gorilla Ape hangers feature a threaded cap at the top and a capped opening at the botto. Now, you can easily see what’s going on when you pull the delicate bundle of wires, minimizing the risk of kinked or “surprise” stripped wires when running all your electrical inside the bars.

Other features include a turned down design to keep your hands at a legal height (different in each state or country) and a tighter to fairing and more forward position for aggressive stance when installed on a Harley Street Glide . These bars are primarily for throttle by wire FLH Harley-Davidson touring bikes such as the Road glide ,Street glide and Road king but can be used on a Dyna, Sportser, Fat Bob, etc.

Many sizes to choose from to fit your needs: 6 to 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18”. Sold with caps in your choice of “drilled crowns” or “smoothies” In-house produced and available online at Azzkikr Custom Cycles.

Your engine And Transmission Are In Harm’s Way And You Don’t know.

dimple1Dimple2Many don’t know, some don’t want to know and others forget. Motor friction creates unwanted metal particles, creating a contamination that is circulated millions of times between each of your oil changes, polishing (wearing) down the metal until the engine is worn out. These particles are measured in microns and don’t expect your oil filter to remove them all: most oil filters can’t stop particles smaller than 35 microns. Even an oil change will not remove them all. New oil in the engine  doesn’t mean non-contaminated oil, and the vast majority of vehicle owners still don’t know this…

gaugeSince many years, Dimple Magnet Plugs sells the world’s most powerful magnetic oil plugs, pulling all ferrous metals from your engine and transmission to extend their life. The stronger the magnet, the cleaner the oil. Thanks to extreme magnetism, tests after tests (yes, they are published on the company website), the Dimple oil plugs perform much better that those installed on any factory motorcycle, except of course when the manufacturer install them as original equipment. Dimple magnets work easily in all hot engine environments. Their oil magnets degrade half of 1% every one hundred years, guaranteeing that they will work for your lifetime. Joke Of The Week

cyril-huze-joke44When you live on a farm, your perception is a little bit different…

A farmer drove to a neighbor’s farmhouse and knocked at the door. A boy, about 9, opened the door. “Is your dad or mom home?” said the farmer. “No, they went to town.” “How about your brother, Howard? Is he here?” “No, he went with Mom and Dad.” The farmer stood there for a few minutes, shifting from one foot to the other, mumbling to himself, when the young boy say’s, “I know where all the tools are, if you want to borrow one, or I can give Dad a message.”

“Well,” said the farmer uncomfortably, “No, I really want to talk to your Dad, about your brother Howard getting my daughter Suzy pregnant”. The boy thought for a moment…then says, “you’ll have to talk to my Dad about that. I know he charges $500 for the bulls and $150 for the pigs, but I have no idea how much he charges for Howard.”

A Harley Shovelhead Full Of Tricks

SmockeyGold1SmockeyGold2SmockeyGold3SmockeyGold4At first glance it just looks like a very nice reborn Shovelhead. Then spend some time looking closer and you will find out that this machine is much more than it appears. The list of tricks is very representative of the work of builder Bernard Massard at his south France custom V-Twin Mechanic shop. Starting with with an early 1966 Shovelhead, immediate tasks to be performed were obvious: a full tranny and engine rebuilt adding some of the best add-ons motor components of the industry to turned it into a 1480 cc powerplant: Jims, Andrews cam, S&S oil pump, Dyna 2000 ignition, Mikuni 45 carburetor. Then turning the stock frame into a rigid one and welding the rear fender to hug the tire.

SmockeyGold5SmockeyGold6From there, the rest of the build is an addition of creative ideas perfectly executed. An Evo Harley Springer front end was shortened 10″, and after modification of the stock rockers. fitted with 2 Scooter springs! The reservoir (no gas there) was hand formed taking inspiration from an Italian Aermacchi tank, welding a fat rod around it and a 70’s style gas cap. In it, is the a similar shaped oil tank. To fill the free space under the seat where you would expect the oil bag are installed together, in the same compartment the battery, the coils, the Dyna ignition and all electricals. New Harley Zeppelin Air Adjustable Seat Pumps Up Comfort

RoadZeppelinAir1RoadZeppelinAir2By keeping blood flowing on a long ride, Harley-Davidson claims that this new air adjustable seat can add hours to your saddle time.

These new seats have a super sleek profile and a new hand pump. The new design features relief cut-outs and an internal adjustable air bladder system based on advanced technology that distributes rider and passenger weight across the seating surface, eliminating pressure points and cushions tailbones.

The air bladder pressure can be adjusted with easy-to-reach hand pumps and air-release valves. How does BADD (Bikers Against Drunk Drivers) Spends Your Money? An Ongoing Investigation…

badd1In and out of the motorcycle industry, more and more charities bring more than dollars to support a cause,  a lot of controversy about how the raised funds are used… For the past three months, WESH 2 News, an NBC-affiliate television station serving Orlando, is Investigating BADD (Bikers Against Drunk Drivers), digging into the charity claiming to provide assistance to those who are hurt by drunken drivers. Reporter Matt Grant followed the money all the way to Miami to find out how Daytona-based BADD is spending your donations. Below, I list his findings:

According to state records, in 2012 BADD took in about $879,000, but gave less than one percent — about $8,700 — to victims. Instead, the organization spent about $200,000 on rent, nearly $32,000 on bank charges, about $28,000 on a prize display, nearly $7,000 on supplies, about $6,600 on postage and shipping and approximately $13,000 on advertising, state records show. The year before, BADD reported revenue of nearly a million dollars but gave only about $9,200 to victims, while spending nearly half a million on professional fund raisers.

Badd2“I think that’s completely pathetic,” said president of Charity Navigator, Ken Berger. Officials from two of the largest non-profit charity watch dogs in the United States reviewed BADD’s returns and said they don’t add up. Berger says he would give BADD a zero rating. “A miniscule amount of the money is going to meet the mission. Any time we see that happening we get very concerned,” Berger said. In 2010, BADD reported about $912,000 in total revenue while giving only 0.2 percent — just $2,400 — to victims. “I think it really causes people to question whether they can trust an organization like this and quite frankly, we don’t think that they should,” Berger said.

BADD has been around for 28 years and is known for its motorcycle giveaways. WESH 2 News wanted to hear directly from the charity’s founder, Danny Perkins, but after more than a month of trying it didn’t happen. Despite showing his face on a $1,600-a-month billboard, Perkins would not meet with WESH 2 News in person, citing health and legal reasons. When asked how donations are spent, Perkins told WESH in an email “the charity speaks for itself,”claiming BADD has sent out 5 million flyers and used Facebook posts to encourage people not to drink and drive. “That’s our mandate,” Perkins said. “Exposure and awareness — period.” Continue reading ‘How does BADD (Bikers Against Drunk Drivers) Spends Your Money?
