Flying Pan. A Custom 1951 Harley Panhead.

I have featured quite a few custom bikes built by the Custom Department of  Thunderbike, a very renowned official Harley-Davidson in Germany. The most recent and most famous one is of course the amazing PainTTless voted by its peers 2012 AMD World Champion during this last Sturgis the  Andreas & his crew started to make the yearly summer trip to South Dakota in 2008 and if that year they didn’t get the title of World Champion (at the time showcasing a cool custom called “Open Mind”) they came back home with a 1951 Harley Panhead that they purchased during the rally. Arrived in Germany at the beginning of 2009, it collected dust during almost 2 years before Andreas decided to work on it to turn it into the “Flying Pan” feature here.
All Thunderbike custom bikes are interesting in the sense that the shop being an official Harley-Dealer, all their creations use a new, recent or old Harley powerplant mixed with new “old school” style proprietary parts with a result that must meet (after minor modifications) the tough standard of the European Union road legislation. So, their custom bikes are usually good references for American individuals and builders who want to see what they can modify on a Harley while keeping it road legal and road worthy.  Continue reading ‘Flying Pan. Political Jokes For The Presidential Debate In My City Of Boca Raton, Florida

I live and work 1/4 of a mile from the Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida where Barack Obama and Mitt Romney will debate tomorrow Monday October 22, 2012 at 9 p.m. ET. Returning from Daytona Biketoberfest I just found out that intense security is already in place on a very wide perimeter reaching my HQ. Americans are so polarized about this election that I thought a few good jokes should be helpful in helping everybody relax. Here are the new rules for tomorrow’s debate (by Frank Cerabino from PB Post)

1. A coin toss will be used to determine who speaks first. If President Obama wins, he may use the coin to pay down the country’s $16 trillion debt. If Gov. Romney wins, he may deposit the coin in the Cayman Islands.

2. The candidates will take the stage from opposite directions, approach each other, and engage in a handshake of no less than five seconds and no more than 10 seconds. The pressure of the handshake should not exceed 20 psi. During the handshake, both candidates must smile broadly at each other while mouthing, “douche bag.”

3. As part of their introductory remarks, both candidates will be allowed 30 seconds to praise the academic programs at Lynn University, even though they had no idea the place even existed until they arrived.

4. Throughout the debate, candidates will be prohibited from getting assistance from hidden listening devices, stage props or aerial drones. Continue reading ‘Political Jokes For The Presidential Debate In My City Of Boca Raton, Florida’

Daytona Biketoberfest. 2 Nights Of Sexy At Rossmeyer’s Harley-Davidson.

Don’t ask me to explain what the show is all about and what are the judges criteria to elect the most beautiful women in Halloween costume, bathing suit & lingerie… The most “interesting” part for me was that Emcee of the event Jay Allen let me spend time with Billy Lane’s US Air Force custom bike that Billy built behind bars and that spectators can see exhibited on stage. It took Billy 72 days in a row, 12 hours per day, to build this bike that I consider his best in terms of “creative fabrication.” For those who always want to know more, Billy Lane has now been transferred from the Avon Park Facility to a new transitional facility in Orlando, The purpose of this type of facility is to prepare inmates to their reinsertion in society. Of course, Billy has no problem showing his professional skills and ability to find a job for himself when he will be released….

Daytona Biketoberfest. Willie’s Tropical Tattoo Old School Chopper Time Show.

Who is in Daytona for Biketoberfest? Most of those participating and the usual “suspects” of the industry (builders, opinion leaders, press) gathered at Willie’s Tattoo Chop for 5 hours of old school bike building exhibition. The show is as much about the audience than about the bikes and the “Willie’s Happening” happened again. The only negative: too many admirers around the bikes to be able to shoot them in full. So, just a few “about clean” close-ups…(bike on which I sit by Bill Dodge, Bling Cycles. photo Cyril Huze, Roadside Marty, Bill Dodge by Valerie Smith)

Joke Of The Week

A Minneapolis couple decided to go to Florida to thaw out during particularly icy winter. They planned to stay at the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules, so the husband left Minnesota and flew to Florida on Thursday, with his wife flying down the following day. The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an email to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her email address, and without realizing his error, sent the email.

Meanwhile, somewhere in Houston, a widow had just returned home from her husband’s funeral. He was a minister who was called home to glory following a heart attack. The widow decided to check her email expecting messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she screamed and fainted. The widow’s son rushed into the room, found his  mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:  Continue reading ‘Joke Of The Week’

Hickory Flat Hot Rod

Although the Harley-Davidson reputation under ownership of AMF got tarnished during the period 1969-1981 (bikes were of so low quality that Harleys were mocked as “Hardly Ableson”, “Hardly Driveable,” and “Hogly Ferguson”), all models of this era are good donors for custom projects. It’s what Freddie Arnold did, using a 1978 FXS Lowrider to turn it in a cool rigid Hot Rod mixing 60’s HD parts. Chevy accessories and some of today’s most reliable after-market parts. Daytona Biketoberfest Organizers Would Like To Extend The Rally Beyond 4 Days. The convention and visitors bureau is trying to invigorate the entire off-season because they should be no “off-season” in the Daytona Beach area where weather is always great when compared to the northern states. Biketoberfest is a very important off-season boost to retailers. The 2-county area claims 600,000 visitors during Bike Week in March and 100,000 during Biketoberfest. Room to grow… But of course, a longer Biketoberfest is still a somewhat controversial proposal because not all region residents like the extra noise.

Sturgis City Manager Daniel Ainslie Says The City Made Nearly $400,000 Off Of This Year’s Rally. At Monday night’s council meeting, Ainslie provided the 2012 Rally summary. Ainslie says vendor, sponsor and advertising revenue were all up this year. Rental property was also significantly higher this year. The city rents out space at the community center, liquor store, auditorium and on Main Street. Regarding expenses, s,anitation saw the biggest increase — up 12-percent over the previous year. The amount of garbage that is hauled away is one factor the city uses to determine annual attendance at the rally. Ainslie says this year, the city calculated that 445,700 people came to the Sturgis City, up 7% percent versus year 2011. Continue reading ‘Fast Motorcycle Industry News’

If Romney And Obama Switched Hair With Their Wives…

2012 Daytona Biketoberfest. October 18-21.

The 20th edition of Biketoberfest starts this Thursday (October 18-21) just at the time the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan released its monthly Consumer Index reaching 83.1, the highest level since September 2007, from 78.3 the prior month. The gauge was projected to fall to 78. The Bloomberg Consumer Comfort Index measures Americans’ perceptions on three important variables: the state of the economy, personal finances and whether it’s a good time to buy needed goods or services. Explanation: Rising stock and property values along with falling joblessness may keep giving Americans a psychological boost, brightening the household-spending outlook from now to the year-end holidays. Due to the US Presidential election on November 6, nobody knows for sure if this renewed confidence is sustainable. Continue reading ‘2012 Daytona Biketoberfest. October 18-21.’

A Custom Indian Tribute Bike…To Harley-Davidson Board Track Racers

Most custom building creations are deviant works violating the social norms of what  are formally-enacted rules of the way a motorcycle should look and work. You all know that Mike Tomas specializes in building new Indian motorcycles, mixing heritage with reliable modern engineering. It doesn’t exclude his admiration for the early 20’s  board track racer bikes. So, how do you pay tribute to Harley-Davidson without betraying your unconditional love for everything Indian? By being “deviant”, creating from the ground up a bike  whose “Hendee Deviant” name is making reference to Indian co-founder George Mallory Hendee and using on purpose the H&D initials. of Harley-Davidson.

Of course, Mike Tomas didn’t use any Harley parts, old or new. Mostly the new re-engineered Indian proprietary components that he creates at his Kiwi Indian shop in California  and that he uses on all his custom projects. It starts with a single loop frame with a 28-degree rake. Powerplant is his own  proprietary 84″ Flathead Kiwi Engine  (42 deg, with 3 1/4 stroke 5″ bore) using a CV carburetor and connected to his 4-speed overdrive and synchromesh transmission Foot clutch and hand shift were a must have. “Hendee Deviant” rolls on a pair of 21″ Spoke wheels from Ride Wright fitted with Kiwi narrow hubs, 10″ discs and JayBrake calipers. Front suspension is provided by a Kiwi HD type front end (tubes are modified for a classic look.) Continue reading ‘A Custom Indian Tribute Bike…To Harley-Davidson Board Track Racers’

2012 Daytona Biketoberfest. Robison Open House Party. Friday October 19th.

It’s now half a century that Joe Robison is in the MC business. Joe was the original and only local Harley dealer in Daytona from 1962 until 1993 when he sold his dealership to Bruce Rossmeyer and changed his business to Robison’s Motorcycle Sales and Service, that, at one point, comprised a total of five buildings warehousing new, old, aftermarket, and used parts.  The Harley factory team would prepare and tune their race bikes at his shop and Joe was always in the pits during a race keeping things running smoothly. Joe Robison remains popular in the industry and his shop continues to maintain an extensive on-site inventory of never-used “old stock” parts still in their original packagings. Come to celebrate with him his 50th year in the industry on October 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Drinks, Food & live concert with rockabilly band “Sweet Chariot”. 508 W International Speedway Blvd, Daytona Beach, FL (386) 255-6788 . They are direct factory bolt-on and feature mustang’s proprietary polyurethane foam material and patented base plate. Made in the USA. Mustang Seats.
