51- An Authentic Modern Harley. But With Nostalgia Through And Through.

After the excesses of the 90’s, 00’s and the 2008 recession, many Harley riders had to rethink about what they expect from a custom motorcycle. For an official Harley dealer, top of the game is now to prepare modern machines with an old school flair. The platform of this 51 -to celebrate the 51th anniversary of Harley Heaven in Switzerland – is the FXS Softail Blackline model, the fourth addition to H-D’s Dark Custom series. On the show floor, a very clean and uncluttered bobber theme.

At least intuitively, all designers know good design has always been about creating objects that stand the test of time with a perceived sense of quality and timelessness. Custom Harley Design works wonder when it is overflowing with nostalgia. Official dealers know this well. Nothing seducing more potential buyers than adding old-age flair to a reliable new- age factory model, often all warranties preserved thanks to using after-market products from the genuine H-D parts catalog.

Out of the factory the FXS is a pleasant cruiser either around town or on the highway. A 21″ front wheel, a 5.6″ fork travels, a 4.8″ of trail make it an in-town brawler just in need of cosmetic improvements to make it look (for a non professional, so for the majority of people in the streets) just like a extremely well maintained 50’s Bobber. The Quail Motorcycle Gathering On May 5, 2018

On May 5, 2018, The Quail Motorcycle Gathering http://signatureevents.peninsula.com presented by GEICO Motorcycle, a Peninsula Hotels’ Signature Event, will display 300 pre- and post-war bikes along with three new classes representing revolutionary innovation and creativity in the sport of motorcycling. Event guests will discover custom builds from three generations of the iconic Ness family, an electric class that showcases the evolution of the alt-power motorcycle, and a Café Racer class highlighting hand-built bikes with the stripped-down street fighter aesthetic first made popular on the backroads of England—all while enjoying a family-friendly atmosphere, gourmet food and live music on the lawns of Quail Lodge & Golf Club.

In addition to the Ness family bikes, the show will also feature a collection of hand-picked Electric Motorcycles and artfully-crafted Café Racers. Renowned motorcycle seat engineer Mike Corbin will showcase a 1975 Prototype Corbin-Gentry Electric Motorcycle X2 and one of the first electric motorcycles to be registered in many states—the Corbin-Gentry X1 Electric-Powered “City Bike.” Meanwhile, the Café Racer class will be headlined by classics such as a 1967 Triton Café Racer, a 1966 Velocette MS and an aluminum 1971 T 100 R Daytona, which was Triumph’s most popular 500 twin.

Urban Scrambler

It looks like the definition of a bike’s style never stops mutating from it’s original meaning. It’s particularity true for the categories Chopper, Bobber and Scrambler. The Scrambler was originallu created for outdoor fun and in the mind of manufacturers evolved most of the time into a dual-purpose bike. Country and City?

Julian, owner of shop One Way Machine. is always on the lookout for original Harley Softtail models built in the early 2000, and of course with very low milage. . As a matter of fact, until now, his custom fabrication only used a Softail chassis. But you are looking at his first customized Sportster! It happened because Julian came across a Sportster model from 2004 with German first delivery, only 822 mileage in a perfect condition. The price? Im Europe, during a long time, a used Sportster was resold discounted because of its unjustified reputation among some as of being a lady’s bike.

After 3 years keeping his Sportster in the back of his mind and shop, Julian decided that 2017 (Sportstser’s 60th years anniversary of being produced continuously) was the year to get started on this project. Because every bike Julian spotted in the streets kept the original Sportster wheel base and the small factory wheel sizes, he decided right away to increase the wheel base by extending the factory swingarm, and in the front by installing a raked triple-tree to create a brand new chassis geometry. He also traded the wheels for a 21″ front and a 19″ rear.

After the geometry issue was resolved, the 2004 Sportster was disassembled and thoroughly cleaned to receive a new sheet metal bodywork. The gas tank is an original Triumph one from the 50s. A lot of work had to be done in this one, from rebuilding a tunnel, to a petcock flange, to new frame mounts and welding a new gas cap bung. Then came the time to form a rear fender, to fabricate new fork covers, a new engine mount and a box cover to hide all alectricals. Other parts mentioned below. So, is it both a Ccity and Country Scrambler or only an Urban Scrambler to challenge the city jungle? One Way Machine.

The King P-Nut Gas Tank For Sportsters and Customs

The latest from Lowbrow Customs is the King P-Nut Gas Tank designed for universal custom use or to simply bolt-on to 1986-2003 Harley-Davidson Sportsters.

It is designed for a Frisco style thanks to a shallow tunnel and Lowbro Gas Tank Adapter Brackets. No welding, drilling, or modification necessary.

In addition to fitting a Sportster, this gas tank can be mounted on any motorcycle frame with basic fabrication techniques. One such method is welding some threaded top hat bungs into the backbone of the motorcycle frame.

The King P-Nut gas tank is unique in that it allows full use of it’s 2.4 gallon capacity because of the left-side, 1/4 inch NPT petcock bung and the small gas filler moved up high on the tank.

Being that this is a Frisco mount gas tank sitting high up on the backbone of the frame. If the filler cap is back too far, the tank can’t be filled to the top without the gas overflowing. King P-Nut gas tanks are $149.95 and ship world-wide (with free shipping in the USA). For more info or to purchase yours today visit Lowbro Customs or call toll-free at 1-855-456-9276.

As the current generation of factory and plant workers gets older and phases into retirement, companies like Harley-Davidson are in increasingly desperate need of skilled tradespeople. Harley has launched a new youth mentorship program at its factory in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, in hopes of bringing up the next generation of skilled trades. Recall Of Some After Market Harley-Davidson Softail Detachables Saddlebags

Certain Harley-Davidson Detachables Saddlebags sold as accessories through Harley-Davidson dealerships may contain a defect.

The saddlebag wall thickness may be inadequate, causing improper latching. The saddlebag latching arm may disengage, potentially allowing the saddlebag to separate from the motorcycle while riding.

Dealers will install a kit onto the affected saddlebags that prevents the arm from unlatching inadvertently.  Affected saddlebags have part numbers 90201561, 90201645, 90501552, 90201644, 90201555 and 90201513, and they fit 2018 Softail models.

Angry Bitch. A Fun-Ready Single Sided Swingarm FXR.

Since launched in 1981 as an 1982 model, the FXR represents the Harley to do more than cruising around; a H-D for having more fun thanks to a three rubber- mounted engine limiting vibrations to the rider, and with a higher seat and foot pegs to authorize a leaner angle. Some former and current owners still claim, and I mostly agree, that the FXR is probably the best Harley for fun that it ever produced.

The reputation of the FXR resurfaced again during these last years with more of them getting a second or third life in motorcycle shops across the country. Consequently, the now inevitable FXR only bike shows or at least major FXR classes in Daytona and Sturgis. A phenomenum attracting good Custom Builders, in priority those specialized in custom, high performance builds with rebuilt and boosted motors, like builder Mike Beland of A1 Cycles. Rollie Free Vincent Now At The National Motorcycle Museum

Lightning ridden by Rollie Free in 1948 across the Bonneville Salt Flats in Wendover, Utah is now on display at the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, Iowa. If you attend Vintage Rally 2018 on June 23, 2018 you can enjoy a bike show, swap meet, special guests and the Rollie Free Vincent. The famous and historic “bathing suit bike” will be on loan only until June 30, 2018, so the Museum hopes you’ll visit soon. It’s great to look at it up close. (top photo @ Herb Harris Collection)

Many consider the image of Rollie Free in his bathing suit riding John Edgar’s HRD Vincent one of the most famous motorcycle photographs ever. The story of Rollie tearing off his leathers and deciding to improve his personal streamlining with a bathing suit, bathing cap and tennis shoes is stuff that not even Hollywood can dream up! Vincent enthusiasts will recognize that this is the bike that gave rise to the slogan “The World’s Fastest Standard Motorcycle” when it set a land speed record of 150.313 miles per hour.

The machine does not get shown often, mostly at west coast concours. The owner has graciously agreed to loan it for a display at the National Motorcycle Museum as part of the Museum’s current “Streamliners” presented by J&P Cycles exhibition. The National Motorcycle Museum.
