American Motorcycle Manufacturers Paying 100% Tariff Abroad. True Or False?

Last Tuesday evening, in a speech to Congress, Harley-Davidson was singled out by President Donald Trump as example of an American company having difficulties to sell abroad because of high tariff and taxes reaching 100%.

President Trump didn’t mention any country, but the example he was talking about is India imposing a 100% tariff on all imported motorcycles with engines larger than 600 cc. Other notable countries with high tariffs on large motorcycles (see chart) are Thailand, China, and Malaysia. Continue reading ‘American Motorcycle Manufacturers Paying 100% Tariff Abroad. Motorcycle Minimalism Illustrated

Any custom builder can make motorcycles look bolder and more complicated. As a matter of fact it takes much more creativity and more courage to go in the opposite direction. Many of you may find this contraption, an exercise in simplicity, quite ridiculous. Others will think that the guy who imagined it is kind of a genius, illustrating on 2 wheels the famous quote of Antoine de Saint-Exupery “Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”

In new or old metal, a motorcycle is really extremely simple if it’s built only from useful parts. For pleasure, just add a few beautiful touches. With Easy (like a Sunday morning), I am convinced that Germany, Berlin, based shop Urban Motor wanted to add a touch of dry humor. But don’t be misled, there was a lot of work involved in making this Jawa’s two-stroke machine look like a racer.

A handmade new chassis from steel tubing, a minimalist very unique bodywork by Marvin Diehl of KRT Framework, a one-off front end with integrated handlebars, a pair of over skinny 23” alloy SM Pro wheels with rear drum brake, ultra short smoothly bended exhaust pipes, custom rear sets. an exposed throottle assembly, leather covered grips, etc. And yes, a painter worked on it, adding just a touch of gold on the front end and swingarm. Smile and go slowly…Urban Motor.

Daytona Chamber Of Commerce Names Nathew Hintz Official Artist Of Bike Week

An original painting by the Milwaukee-based gas-and-oil artist Mathew Hintz has been selected as the key image on the Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce 2017 Bike Week Poster. The Daytona Chamber has also named Hintz the Official Artist of Daytona Bike Week.

This is the third consecutive year a work by Mathew Hintz has been featured on the official Daytona Bike Week commemorative poster. Created in his distinctive layered-paint style, the painting depicts a classic motorcycle fuel tank with a Florida palm tree reflected in the chrome gas cap.

Copies of the poster are free and available while supplies last at the Daytona Bike Week Welcome Center on Beach Street, and at select area businesses.

A graduate of the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, Hintz has worked professionally for more than 20 years to develop an impressionistic painting style that’s as singular as a thumbprint and celebrates the form and craftsmanship of motorcycles and automobiles. An Electric Indian Motorcycle To Be Launched In Four To Five Years

Polaris Industriesis working on an electric motorcycle model planned to be released in 4 to 5 years under the Indian brand name.

It’s the second time the company works on an electric 2-wheeler, the first one being the Victory Empulse built using the Brammo electric vehicle technology. Brammo has previously used electric motorcycle racing to both accelerate product development and to showcase its EV technology.

But until now, limited riding range, size of battery modules and production cost have slowed the manufacturing and marketing of electric motorcycles. The company’s new electric Indian is expected to cover 120 to 140 miles on a single charge if driven aggressively, compared with 75 miles for the current Empulse bike.

“The characteristics of the new powertrain are going to be more applicable to be able to ride a bike for pleasure and in twisties, and kind of how you would use today a pleasure bikes” says Polaris President Of Motorcycles Steve Menneto. Harley-Davidson electric LiveWire model tested and presented in limited edition in 2014 is rumored to be mass produced and launched in 2020 or sooner. Expect a race between the 2 big American manufacturers to be the 1st one to succeed in the potentially big market EV category.

Fast Motorcycle Industry News

In 2016 Harley-Davidson Financial Service Loan Losses Shot Up Year Over year. The 1.9% retail credit losses came amid a 2.3% year-over-year decline in loan originations. It’s a high unseen since the fourth quarter of 2010, when loan losses hit 2.11%. “The increase in losses was due to higher defaults across the portfolio, especially from those loans given in oil-dependent areas, and also lower used-bike values at auction” said John Olin, Harley-Davidson Inc.’s senior vice president and chief financial officer. For a motorcycle manufacturer, the recovery value is always a function of the used-bike price. As used-bike prices have come down, credit losses have gone up at Harley-Davidson Financial Services.

Radical Dyna Glide By Ken’s Factory

This new custom is called “Night Cap” because of the chosen whiskey-like paint color. At the opposite of an alcoholic beverage consumed to fall asleep, this new custom from Ken Nagai will keep you awake and surely will get your blood going when spinning it around town. It was designed to look like “unleashed adrenaline” although it was the client  decision to keep the Harley motor  in its stock configuration after a full rebuilt, except some aesthetic add-ons. If I didn’t tell you, you would not find out that the donor bike was a 1996 Dyna Glide. It’s always in Ken Nagai’s philosophy to rebuild Harleys to look like true one-off customs built from the ground up. And as illustrated, he is quite successful at this full makeover task.

To accomplish such a challenge, the Harley was stripped down to bare frame. Then tubing was cut in pieces to be either discarded or re-used to build the new frame platform. Of course, the neck piece where there is the factory stamped H-D VIN number was preserved to legally preserve the Harley title with the Japan DMV. Far from being prisoner of the Dyna classic look, Ken worked his magic to give the rebuilt H-D its own very unique personality. Helped by a big bag of money from his client, “Night Cap” got a new and interesting geometry with a 35-degree rake frame, a shop fabricated double-rail swingarm and an unusual rear suspension setup (2″ lower than stock) using a set of Ohlins shocks mounted almost  horizontally. Italian Style Diamond Floorboards

1bisfloorboards2bisfloorboards3bisfloorboards2floorboardsIn September 2010, Italian born Matthew Vity took a vacation in San Francisco, and fell in love with everything Harley. Back home, he had to decide what to do with his professional life. In 2011 he started Vity’s Design, creating a collection of custom parts with a very unique Italian touch. Five years later his catalog is quite thick and these floorboards are one of his latest additions.

CNC Machined from billet aluminum and/or brass and offered in many finishes, including white and brass. Non-slip surface. The floorboards offer 2 positions. Dimensions are 13.8” L x 5.0” W. The passenger floorboards are 7″L x 3.25”.They fit all Harley models 1983-2016. At Vity’s Design.

BMW K75 Alpha Racer

Designed by Doruk Erdem as a Bonneville Salt Flats racer, it was built by Mark Atkinson. The donor bike was a BMW K75, a factory bike introduced in the United States in 1986 sporting a 3-cylinder engine with a balance shaft and shaft rear drive, and produced until 1995. Obviously, it now features an entirely different frame, a turbo, a reworked shifter, new steering and brakes and beautiful art-deco style fairing with BMW kidneys. Need to see it perform on the Salts.

Don’t Be A Victim And Catch A Crook

This a warning to everybody working in the motorcycle industry. An individual, supposedly French citizen, calling himself alternatively Pierre Dubois or Pierre Müller and possibly other aliases, pretending to be a journalist of well known print or digital custom motorcycle magazines in the US and Europe, contacts industry vendors to get free parts and samples to be tested then featured in “his” magazine.

Sometimes, he pretends to be about to launch or to work for the foreign edition of a current magazine that you know or work with, even when this edition doesn’t exist. Some major vendors of the industry have been duped, sending all types of parts to this guy with delivery at a US or French postal address. Of course, it’s a scam with the parts probably destined to be sold for a 100% profit or maybe used for his own custom motorcycle project(s).

First, nobody at the Cyril Huze Post has ever solicited free parts to be tested with the promise to feature them in our magazine. Second, I would recommend to all vendors to never send anything to a person you don’t know personally as being a journalist employed by a magazine you know well, and without contacting first the Chief Editor and verifying that the address of delivery is a true business address, not a PO Box. On the following page, an example of the way Pierre Dubois/Muller contacts vendors of the industry to get free custom parts. Continue reading ‘Don’t Be A Victim And Catch A Crook’
