AIMExpo. CEO’s of Harley-Davidson and Polaris Offered Keynote Addresses Focusing On New Riders

We all know that the future of the power sports industry lies with new riders. How to discover and develop these new riders is a tough challenge. On this topic, on Thursday morning at the AIMExpo in Columbus, Ohio at the Greater Columbus Convention Center,  Harley-Davidson Motor Company and Polaris Industries CEO’s shared their ideas.

Harley-Davidson CEO Matt Levatich re-affirmed his mandate to “build” 2 million new riders in the USA over the next decade to replace aging boomers. Levatich explained that if the hardware is the blood of the industry, the riding experience is what will motivate brand new riders to join the sport. He said that his company and the industry must become very fast as good as building new riders as they are at building motorcycles…

Polaris CEO Scott Wine began his address by describing how much Polaris has achieved until now. But he is very realistic regarding current market condition: a very tough challenging environment, political polarization since the presidential campaign, weather-related disasters in Texas, Louisiana, Florida and South Carolina, Scott Wine also called for campaigns to attract new riders, increasing the number of dealers, and offering to bikers technological innovation. He would like customers to be able to design their motorcycles online, offering basic design options via smartphones, tablets and computers at home or via screens installed in dealerships. Polaris is also contemplating and evaluating Slingshot rentals and as a sharing vehicle in big cities.

First Customized Brand New 2018 Fat Boy?

For each new motorcycle model there is a rush from dealers and from independent shops to become the first to customize it and to make it known by the largest number of bikers. Even if customization is limited, like in this case, to a 4-day labor job and a very limited number of motorcycle brand genuine accessories, it’s an opportunity to imagine what a full custom job could be.

As you know, although the new Fat Boy is more muscular than ever (a 160mm front and 240 mm rear solid-disc wheels), it is 29 lbs lighter than ever and benefits from a 34% stiffer chassis overall. When Too much is Almost Enough. Big Cubes from R&R Cycles.

They say you can’t beat cubic inches. So why not go all the way with a complete 155 cubic inch V-Twin says R&R Cycles. Built completely in-house, this Billet Beast combines R&R’s own 4.625 inch flywheel assembly with a pair of 4.60 inch billet cylinders bolted to a set of billet crankcases.

If however, what you want is big cubes that will fit into most stock frames, R&R offers two, complete, twin-cam style big-blocks: a 131 and a 124. Like the 155, these engines are built in-house, including the welded and dynamic balanced flywheel assembly. The 131 comes with 4-3/8 inch stroke and 4-3/8 inch bore; while the 124 combines a 4-5/8 inch stroke with a 4-1/8 inch bore.

Torque and horsepower figures will depend on the customer’s preference in cams, compression and exhaust. For more information call R&R Cycles at 603 605 1488.

Lonely Fucker Chopper

Good design is about creating objects and machines that stand the test of time, The Chopper design is one of the few ones having acquired a very unique sense of timelessness. In a softening motorcycle environment, can the Chopper design produced at a reasonable price works wonders to attract young new bikers? Don’t know the definitive answer, but just observing that quite a few belonging to the 90’s born generation like to build them to get around in a fun, fashionable and relative cheap way.

Marcos Vazquez, from 2004-born custom shop Free Kustom Cycles is also the exclusive distributor for Spain of all Mooneyes custom accessories. On the building side he works alone with the help of after-hours friends, his preferences being to tinker with American Choppers and Bobbers, on European Cafe Racers and all bikes featuring the characteristic Japanese touch. Each year, his collaboration with Mooneyes gives him the status of Honor Guest at the famous and excellent Japanese Yokohama Bike Show where he is responsible for creating a handcrafted trophy and where, of course, he gets as much inspiration as possible from builders from other the world.

Back to “The “Lonely Fucker” Chopper, Marcos explained to me that the donor bike is a Ness style bike that he bought 12 years ago from an individual in his country, and that he din’t really like to look at or ride it… It’s under the pressure of 2 of his brothers that the makeover got started with for objective to be ready for exhibiting the new bike at another great annual bike event, the “Art & Wheels” show in Switzerland. Flashback. 1915 Iver Johnson Motorcycle.

It’s for me one of the most beautiful motorcycles produced at the beginning of last century. The Iver Johnson Company (the company shared the name as its founder Norwegian-born Iver Johnson.) was first a U.S firearms and bicycle company. Launched in Fitchburg, MA in 1907, a motorcycle division was created from the conversion of a line of business that had been manufacturing bicycles for some 23 years prior to that date. Ultimately, the arms division of the business was growing so rapidly to meet demand that management decided to focus on that market and as a result motorcycle operations closed in 1916 (varying sources claim the last year as being 1915, with 1916 seeing only the sales of remaining 1915 produced inventory) The Ever Jognson motorcycle featured a number of very advanced design features and were advertised as “Mechanical Perfection” (photo @ Doug Mitchel 630.605.6276)

Custom Indian Scout Bobber Series At Brooklyn Invitational

As the title sponsor of the ninth annual Brooklyn Invitational Custom Motorcycle Show, Indian Motorcycle unveiled three custom versions of the all-new Scout Bobber crafted by Keino Cycles, Kraus Motor Co. and skateboarding icon Steve Caballero, in conjunction with Roland Sands Design. Each of these builders brings a uniquely distinct vision and signature style. The end result being three totally unique custom interpretations of the Scout Bobber, which helps showcase how easily customizable the bike is and the versatility of the platform.

Indian Motorcycle specifically partnered with these three highly-regarded customizers, as While Keino Sasaki and Satya Kraus carry long-standing reputations forged through years within the customization and aftermarket industry, skateboard icon Steve Caballero has seen his profile increase steadily within the last several years thanks to his love for vintage American v-twins and his participation in festivals such as Wheels & Waves.

“Strip it down” was the mantra and inspiration Indian Motorcycle used when developing the latest model in its iconic Scout lineup. A low-slung, blacked-out, 100 horsepower, minimalist motorcycle that proves once again than less is definitely more.

Two labor Unions End Partnership With Harley-Davidson

Two labor unions ended a two-decade long partnership agreement with Harley-Davidson Inc (HOG.N) on Tuesday, citing issues with senior management.

Union leaders belonging to the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) and the United Steelworkers (USW) said they were concerned with the way Harley’s management was handling staffing related to seasonal production. (In clear, Harley is accused of replacing as many as possible hourly workers with seasonal temporary workers)

Chief Executive Matt Levatich agreed to work with the unions to resolve staffing issues raised on behalf of full-time workers, USW said in a release. Harley-Davidson said in May it would build a plant in Thailand, a major Asian automotive hub, to serve the growing Southeast Asian market, a move that was criticized by USW (From Reuters)

Fred Kodlin Racing KR 300 Unveiled During 20th Edition Of European Bike Week

As a yearly tradition, Fred Kodlin introduces a new custom during the European Bike Week (September 3-10) at Lake Faak, Austria This year, on Wednesday Sepy 6,the unveiling was done ar the Velden Casino on the west side of the lake with Fred Kodlin rolling out on a turbo charged 300 hp Speed Bagger named KR 300.

First, contrary to what some could think, the flashy paint job color is not in reference to Kork Ballingtons’s legendary Kawasaki KR 500, which raced in the eighties on the Grand Prix motorcycle circuit. As a matter of fact, Kodlin’s bagger has a higher hp. Client originally wished a relatively dull silver color, but as a good Custom Builder, Free Kodlin convinced him easily that such a one-off bike deserves a flashy paint job to be noticed and remembered by all.

“Basically, this KR 300 Turbo Bagger is the first Harley-Davidson “Milwaukee Eight” motor ,since its introduction 1 year ago, cradled in a very radical custom frame” says Fred. Of course, all bodywork is handcrafted out of steel at the shop , and is quite similar looking to the one of the ”F-32″, but with even slimmer lines.

To be mentioned, 2 weeks before unveiling, Fred & son Len were still finishing some welding, prepping then smothering all bodywork, working every day almost day and night. Meanwhile, renowned engine specialist Guenther Sohn prepared the engine, boosting it to 2040 cc and adding a Trask turbo system, probably the first tinstalled on a Milwaukee Eight engine. About 300 hp are optional in this current setup by specialist Sohn who is racing Top Gas and Top Fuel Harleys. As many of Kodlin’s bikes, this one rolls on a tall 30” front wheel. Most of his bikes are a custom building exercise, but one you can always ride confidentially and knowing that there will be only one like you on the road. And the beauty is that Kodlin has always a client ready to pay a big price for each of his fancy creations.

For my readers at or traveling to European Bike Week in Faak, Austria, from Tuesday September 5 to Saturday the 9, the Kodlin “Murdercycles” Show, presents the latest bikes and products of Fred and Len Kodlin. The exhibition is open to the public inside the “Casineum” of Casino Velden about 15 km from the Faak other event sites.  Entrance is free of charge. (photos H. Roesler for C. Huze)

Cyril Huze Post Interrupted By Hurricane Irma

Palm Beach County. 09-10-17. 8.30 am. In 11 years, my daily news website has never been interrupted by any event, even hurricanes crossing my state of Florida. But here comes category 4 Irma entering Florida with winds up to 165 mph and gusts up to 205 mph. At this time, we still have electricity and a Wi-Fi connection. But we have been warned, not for a long time… So, apology in advance for not being able to update my site as usual if destruction and flooding happen to be as heavy and geographically extended as predicted by meteo experts.

Video: shot at home 09/10/17 4 pm EST. Irma is still 85 miles away. Have a thought for all those affected by hurricane Irma.

Jared Mees Takes the win And The Title At The Harley-Davidson Williams Grove Half-Mile

Jared Mees (No. 9 Indian Motorcycle Rogers Racing Scout FTR750) put on another masterclass performance to take the win and clinch the American Flat Track AFT Twins presented by Vance & Hines crown two races early at the Harley-Davidson Williams Grove Half-Mile presented by Appalachian Harley-Davidson.

After nearly a quarter-century absence, it was a welcome return to Williams Grove Speedway as fans packed the house to witness the Pennsylvania native score his fourth overall premier class championship.

“Man, it’s an honor to be able to come to Williams Grove — I was born and raised 45 minutes from here — and to clinch this championship in front of all my friends and family,” Mees said. “We had a phenomenal year. I had a magnificent team behind me. I don’t know what else to say. I give all the credit to those guys — they work so hard week-in and week-out. The Indian was a phenomenal motorcycle for me from start to finish. It’s unbelievable. “To win a championship in the fashion we did this year and — no offense, but to dominate it. To go out there and pull off nine wins and clinch the championship with two races to go, it was phenomenal. I never thought it would have happened, especially considering the talent of the other guys out there.” Continue reading ‘Jared Mees Takes the win And The Title At The Harley-Davidson Williams Grove Half-Mile’

New Attraction At European Bike Week. Harley-Davidson XG 750 Street Rod Hooligan Races.

This year, European Bike Week at Lake Faak, Austria is celebrating its 20th Edition. Harley-Davidson has come up with a new attraction that gets fresh wind and very cool action into the event. In record time, a Short Track oval was prepared in one of the most scenic locations that Faak has to offer,. Harley brought 10 new XG 750 Street Rod bikes converted to “Dirt Rod” style bikes modified just for the racetrack.

Twenty Journalists from all over the world, including Japan, South Africa, Scandinavia, Spain, Italy, Germany and Austria who never ever ridden dirt bikes received a “crash course” on both bike and track by Italian Dirt Track specialist and “tutor” “Professor” Marco Belli and his team. All on the “fast track” to learn riding on the dirt and adapting to the not easy task of handling the heavy bikes around the very short track. The bikes – all 2018 model year, were prepared by Silverstone/UK based IDP Moto Ltd who converted the Street into “Dirt Track mode” by removing the front brakes, installing new handlebars, a Harley’s Dirt Track seat, a modified tank, an open air filter and short pipes. Rear shocks were swapped for Ohlins, the stock fork did the job in the front.. Continue reading ‘New Attraction At European Bike Week. Harley-Davidson XG 750 Street Rod Hooligan Races.’
