49ers Gold Rush

The discovery of gold nuggets in the Sacramento Valley in early 1848 sparked the Gold Rush, arguably one of the most significant events to shape American history during the first half of the 19th century. Would be gold miners traveled to San Francisco and the surrounding area. The Gold Rush led to the creation of California. By the end of 1849, the non-native population of the California territory was some 100,000 compared with the pre-1848 figure of less than 1,000. Gold mining reached its peak by 1852 but since then continues to be the inspiration all over the world for movies, books, art, fashion, all types of artwork including custom motorcycle designs and paint jobs…

There may be way too many motorcycles designed around the wild west or gold rush theme. A few good ones able to develop the Far West conquest atmosphere, but also, unfortunately, a vast number of others limited to tacky western painted murals. In the UK, couple Vic and Lin Jefford from custom shop Destiny cycles, have consistently produced multi show winning bikes for both customers and themselves since 1998. They are too experienced to fall in the trap of a theme bike without soul. First, they carry almost all their work in-house to project their own style and personality and in the end have always offered high quality hand-crafted bikes winning a record of important bike shows in Europe. 99 Years Ago Today. The First American Enters Germany On A Harley. The Iconic Picture Re-Created In Original Location.

“99 years ago…, …on November 12th 1918, a photographer walked out of his studio, awoken by the sound of German military boots walking on cobblestones. Not in unison, as coming in the past four years, but slow and out of marching step. War was over November 11th at 11 a.m. The “Great War” came to a sudden and unexpected end. It wasn’t the end of the war, only the Armistice, but at least the killing had stopped and the German troops were now marching east, back home. This photographer saw a chance – to take a picture of the retreating German Army at a very special location, not to0 far from his shop, one that would symbolyse the downfall of the Kaiser Reich. So he took his equipment, walked along the road beside the troops and arrived at the selected spot. Then, he set up his equipment. Photographing in 1918 was far from what we know today. Even those who have photographed slides and film would be challenged to operate a 1918 equipment.

When he had set up tripod and camera, something strange happened. A motorcycle with a sidecar was coming down the road and stopped almost in front of him. Waiting to turn left through the passing soldiers. Motorcycles were a common sight in this war-busy town, so he probably did not notice that this motorcycle was different – and the uniform of the rider was different too. The image in his box camera was inverted – and probably upside-down. It did make a nice picture – and he shot it. It was the image of a then corporal named Roy Holtz. But it took another World War to discover that image (top picture) published in 1944 in the Harley-Davidson Enthusiast Magazine with Roy Holtz telling the journalist a little bit of his story. The days before and after this iconic image was taken that day have remained a mystery. But no more, says “Motographer” Hoest Roesler.. After 10 years of effort and research Horst has tracked down the history of not just this image, but also how it came to this almost impossible situation: an American soldier riding a Harley among German soldiers retreating to their country!

“I knew for a long time, like many, about the image and story, but estimated the chances of tracking down the location, which I knew would be “core” of any story, were slim to nil. When I finally found out the location, I saw to my surprise that I had passed that very spot several times without ever notifying that THIS is where the picture was taken!” says Horst.

“On December 4, 2007, I stood at the spot and could not believe it. But that was rather the beginning than the end of the search. Dieter Hofem, owner of Chem-Tools (, a producer of high-profile custom-motorcycle, antique and custom-car cleaning products had a 1916 Model “J” which had one flaw. No sidecar. But at my request he did find a period sidecar used until now as a flower pot… With it he was able to restore the complete 1916 sidecar. Excited by my project, he found a GENUINE Doughboy Uniform on eBay (Third Army, but that’s was close enough…)

By April 2009, the project was ready to hit the road. Not just had the Motographer in 2008 researched the unit Holtz was fighting for, but also where they fought, where and how he got lost, where and which unit really took him prisoner. The 5th German Bavarian Division at that time fought its way home against British Troops along the Schelde river in northern Belgium and was thus out of the picture.. How the hell it worked out that Holtz ended up at that location where the image was taken in 1912? In May 2009 Horst Roesler financed a trip and the filming of a documentary video by “Biker Lifestyle TV” specialist Gerd Scheidel during which they re-created the original image in the very same spot where Holtz was photographed.”

Visits to the USA before and after the filming brought more details and added up to a spectacular story, so much more complex than as told in the February 1944 issue of the Harley Enthusiast Magazine, which has been the base of so many miss-interpretations through the decades. These included visits to the family, the National Archives in Washington, US-Army Archives/Carlisle, Bavarian War Archives Munich, Wisconsin State Museum/Madison, Harley-Davidson Museum Milwaukee and almost all American WW-1 Cementeries in France, not to forget almost annual visits to the World War 1 Battlefields of the AEF and the collection of books, maps and images, often period stuff from Flea Markets and antique bookshops… The 100th anniversary of this iconic picture is approaching and Horst Roesler has to complete the story and publish it. The Build By Paul Teutul Jr. A Reflection on Faith, Family, and My Time on “American Chopper” By Paul Teutul Jr.

Paul Teutul Jr. starred on American Chopper with “Paulie” and his father, Paul Sr., building custom choppers together. After his time on the reality show, he started his own business, Paul Jr. Designs. Today, Paul Jr. Designs continues to thrive, producing custom bikes for a variety of individual and corporate clients. The Build is his first book.

“It remains humorous to me that after ten years of appearing on a reality television show, the question I am most often asked, by far, is whether what happened on our show was, well, real. But then again, the dynamic that made “American Chopper” a global phenomenon did appear unreal, prompting the two to three million viewers tuning in on Monday nights to hope – even pray – that the volatile relationship between my father and me was too bad to be true.

The premise of the show was simple: a father and son work together to build custom motorcycles. “American Chopper” worked because the bikes and our relationship were jaw dropping. For 10 seasons and 233 one-hour episodes, my father and I were often a train wreck that proved equally as difficult to turn away from as to watch. And yes, it was real. In fact, I believe that because of my relationship with my father, “American Chopper” not only was the most real reality show, but it was the first true reality show that didn’t involve surviving on an island.

The arguments, shouting matches, door slamming, and wall punching were no different from my life growing up with my father, working for him in the steel business, and then building custom bikes together. The only difference with “American Chopper” was that there were cameras around, recording our blowups for the world to see.
I have learned that there are many people with stories similar to mine – people who are part of, or are directly impacted by, an abnormal relationship. I have nodded in understanding while listening to fans of our show describe their relationships gone bad. I have even talked with one man who might have had a worse relationship with his father than I did with mine.

Those conversations are one reason I decided to write The Build. I have been married to Rachael for seven years now, and our strong relationship is one my parents did not have. Our son, Hudson, is almost three years old, and our father-son dynamic will be the complete opposite of what I grew up with. I have faith that will be the case… because of my faith. And when the opportunity arose to write a book about choppers, my family, and my faith, I said, “I’ve got to do this.”

Seeing my relationship with my father play out on a reality show for ten years was difficult because our society tends to keep such problems hidden. It has been difficult to detail in this book my bad experiences with my father because he is my dad, and I love him – I have long desired to have a normal relationship with him. At EICMA Milan, Indian Motorcycle Unveiled A One-Off Race-Inspired Scout FTR1200

It was unveiled at the EICMA Milan trade Show. Although it is a one-off Indian Scout, this FTR1200 Custom was built to celebrate the Indian FTR750’s dominant performance in American Flat Track, its Wrecking Crew and Indian’s return to racing. Indian worked with its Indian Motorcycle Race team of Jared Mees, Bryan Smith and Brad Baker to execute its vision of what it would look like to bring the FTR platform to the street.” “This bike marries the FTR750’s race bike look with the proven Scout engine and serves as an exploration of how we could expand the Indian brand to new customers around the world in the future.

Out of the 18 flat track races that took place in 2017, the Indian Wrecking Crew took 37 of the 54 podium positions available, including six podium sweeps and 14 race wins, bringing Indian the manufacturer’s title and Mees his fifth AMA Grand National Championship. Not only that, Mees, Smith and Baker swept the 2017 AFT Championship – placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Mees tallied 10 wins out of 18 races and set a new single-season record of 17 finishes on the podium, while Smith was on the podium nine times, with four wins, three runner-ups and two third-place finishes. Baker tallied 10 podiums, despite being out with an injury and unable to compete in the final two races. He earned five runner-ups and five third-place finishes.

“We’ve built a strong foundation in the CBT (Cruiser, Bagger, Tourer) segment over the past four years, and we are excited by the positive feedback on the FTR and the opportunities to grow the brand globally in the next five years.” said Steve Menneto, Indian President of Motorcycles. Marketing Director, Reid Wilson, added: “Indian has a rich racing history of winning and we aim to continue that with the FTR platform and beyond. As was the case with Indian’s original founders, we are using racing to develop, test and showcase the capabilities of our motorcycles. Indian will push boundaries by developing new products that will expand rider perceptions of American motorcycles. We plan to be respectful of Indian’s rich heritage, while expanding the reach of the brand over the long-term horizon.”

“The FTR Custom will be exhibited at international events throughout 2018 to help us continue to expand the global reach and relevance of Indian Motorcycle.

Joke Of The Week

To shoot or not to shoot, that is the question

A man returns home a day early from a business trip.
It’s after midnight. While en-route home, he asks the cabby if he would be a witness, because the man suspects his wife is having an affair and he wants to catch her in the act. For $100, the cabby agrees.

Quietly arriving home, the husband and cabby tip toe into the bedroom.

The husband switches on the lights, yanks the blanket back and there is his wife, naked as a jay bird, with a man, totally nude also. The husband puts a gun to the naked man’s head. The wife shouts, don’t do it! I lied when I told you I inherited money. Continue reading ‘Joke Of The Week’

Harley-Davidson Just Released The 2018 Sport Glide™, Its 9th Model Based On The All-New Softail Platform.

The new Harley-Davidson® Sport Glide™ motorcycle is an aggressive factory-custom cruiser outfitted with a detachable fairing and saddlebags ideally suited for touring , cruising or commuting. The versatile Sport Glide is ready for short- or long-distance weekend runs. “The Sport Glide offers the thrilling dynamic capability of the new Softail platform with features that make it suited for both commuting and light touring,” said Dave Latz, senior product planning manager at Harley-Davidson. “Its factory-custom design speaks to modern performance and contemporary style.”

The ninth model based on the all-new Harley-Davidson Softail® platform and the latest in a line of 100 high-impact motorcycles the company plans to introduce by 2027, the Sport Glide presents an engaging combination of technology and style. Designed to be lightweight and stiff, the new Softail chassis delivers agility and performance that will exceed the expectations of the most demanding cruiser riders, while the rigid-mounted Milwaukee-Eight 107 V-Twin powertrain pumps out a mountain of torque for outstanding acceleration and passing power.

The new fairing is shaped to deflect wind away from the rider’s chest while leaving the rider’s head in a clean stream of air. The fairing is secured to the fork tubes with quick-release clamps, making removal or installation fast and easy. Riders seeking even more wind protection can exchange the standard 1.5-inch-high windshield for a 5.5-inch Light Smoke Windshield available from Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Accessories.

“The Sport Glide presents the broad influence of Harley-Davidson design in a very contemporary way,” said Brad Richards, Harley-Davidson Vice President of Styling & Design. “In the new fairing, for example, you can see the influence of the iconic batwing fairing from Harley Touring models, but it’s been trimmed back to create a more compact, sporty shape.”

The new lockable, rigid saddle bags feature a sleek clam-shell design. The bags are easy to load and unload, and can be opened with one hand by a seated rider. A damping device allows the saddlebag lids to open smoothly. The bags can be removed in seconds with an internal quick-release mechanism, leaving behind mounting points that are barely visible. Royal Enfield Unveiled Its New 650 cc Parallel Twin To Equip Two New Models

Royal Enfield has unveiled a new 650 cc parallel twin engine at the Royal Enfield UK Technical Center at Bruntingthorpe in United Kingdom. The 2 new models running on this engine are expected to be unveiled at the EICMA Show in Milan today 7 November.

It is clear that Royal Enfield, with a stronger engine, aimed at developing a global platform that would carry the Royal Enfield legacy and character into modern motorcycling history and seduce as much beginners than experienced riders. It could mean some new competition for our American brands also looking for new riders.

The new unit is a four-stroke, single overhead cam, air-cooled, 648cc parallel twin cylinder engine tuned to deliver torque across the rev range, allowing the new RE motorcycle to have a ride as smooth and stable as that of current generation, without having to shift too much even at low speeds. The new 648 cc displacement engine produces 47 bhp at 7,100 rpm and 52 Nm at 4,000 rpm, which is considerably higher than that delivered by the current 500cc engine at 27 bhp and 41 Nm. Royal Enfield says the twin cylinder configuration doesn’t have the thump that Enfield’s motorcycles are famous for. But Siddhartha Lal, MD & CEO said, “I wouldn’t call it a thump, but I would call it a rumble.” (photo @ @SwatiKJain)

A Chopper Dressed As A Racer

Haters are going to hate and the others are going to love some of the tricks used by Taber Nash on this quite unusual chop. Since its creation in 2003, Nash Motorcycle Company has always produced ground up custom choppers, bobbers and hot rod bikes mixing the old with the new. And this chopper dressed as a racer is faithful to Taber’s philosophy of building “bold” bikes not letting anyone indifferent…

Inspired by an old race car from the 20’s that had OK on it and named “OK or KO” (depending of which side you are looking at it), this project got started when a customer dumped a bunch of parts on Taber Nash and told him “ I want a long and low Chop with a true one-off appearance.” Problem partly solved when Taber realized that a pair of 15” wheels wrapped in race tires reached this assigned objective of visual uniqueness. But love it or not, “OK/KO” is much more than this. Continue reading ‘A Chopper Dressed As A Racer’

Victory Motorcycles Recalling Certain 2010-2017 Models

Polaris Industries owner of the now discontinued Victory Motorcycles is recalling 26200 motorcycles (model years 2010-2017): Victory Magnum, Cross Country, Cross Roads, Tour and Hard Ball. The issue is regarding the engine potentially misfiring and and resulting in heat from the catalytic converter melting the rear brake line and nearby wiring.

Damage to the brake line or wiring could increase the risk of a crash. “Continued operation with the engine in a misfire condition can result in elevated exhaust temperatures. The rear brake line and localized electrical lines can become damaged as the result of increased temperatures.”

Dealers will re-route the brake line away from the exhaust catalyst, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in November 2017. Owners may contact Polaris customer service at 1-877-737-7172. Polaris’ number for this recall is V-17-02.

Harley-Davidson Refuses Military Wife’s Late Payment…

When Harley-Davidson dealership owner Dennis Packee wrote a letter to a soldier’s wife, he never expected it to go viral. He was only trying to reach out to an individual who he knew was going through a struggle. And although he wrote the letter from his heart, he could never have guessed that it would touch so many thousands when it was later shared online.

Before he was deployed overseas, Christopher Walters rented a space to store his motorcycle at Reiman’s Harley-Davidson. While he was away, his wife Jaime failed to stay on top of the rental space payments. With two children to watch over, she was overwhelmed with all the responsibility now that Christopher had left for his tour of duty.

Because unexpected problems popped up, Jaime fell behind on the Harley-Davidson payments. And when she realized her mistake, she sent the late check in the mail with a long apology.
