Daytona Bike Week Flash News 5
Published by March 8th, 2009 in Builders, Customs, Editorial and Events.
Can the weather be more perfect for a major Bike Show? 80 F, solid blue sky, light breeze. Big traffic jam Saturday at 10 am around the Daytona Lagoon Water Park where all parking spots (at $10 if you can get one) are already full from visitors to the Rat’s Hole Show. With 175 top custom and vintage bikes competing around an empty pool (why?) easy to forget that money is tight for most biker families. Most of you have been to the show, already know its antics, the giant Green Rat watching the judges, the Rat Mates (very young this year) looking for new cool bikes to lay on and builders to pose with (and not the opposite, huh!), the acrobatics of the press photographers trying to get the bike shot of the year, etc. Continue reading ‘Daytona Bike Week Flash News 5’
More News About The Daytona Biker Fusion Party
Published by March 8th, 2009 in Builders, Customs, Editorial and Events. You already know by my former post that an All-Star list of custom motorcycle builders, industry leaders, and media traditionally meet together at the Dog House on Thursday of each Bike week. In addition to the festivities (girls, girls, girls…) the main objective is to raise money for a good cause. Proceeds from this year’s event went to the Black Hawk Medevacs and wounded soldiers in Afghanistan. The backpacks contain amenities like blankets, sweat pants, hoodies, toiletries and phone cards for wounded soldiers who have undergone emergency evacuation from a combat zone. Daytona Bike Week Flash News 4
Published by March 7th, 2009 in Builders, Customs, Editorial and Events.Perfect weather helping, many Floridians decided to head to Daytona to enjoy the last weekend of Bike Week. It should boost the numbers that most expect to be down from last year. In what percentage? We will never know for sure… Continue reading ‘Daytona Bike Week Flash News 4’
Big atttendance this morning at the Daytona Hilton where with other AMA 300 guests I went to listen to Flat-Track Legends Scott Parker and Jay Springsteen. This Motorcycle Hall Of Fame Museum fundraising event was celebrating the 2 Harley-Davidson factory stars who are both considered to be some of the best AMA Grand National flat-track racers of all time (Scott Parker has 9 titles and 94 national wins. Jay “Springer” Springsteen has 3 consecutive titles and was the 1st one to reach 30 wins). All proceeds raised during this event will help fund a future Hall Of Legends dirt trck exhibit. Daytona Bike Week Fusion Party. Hotter Than Ever.
Published by March 6th, 2009 in Builders, Customs, Editorial and Events.
Thanks to the hard work of promotion expert Carrie Repp, the Daytona Biker Fusion is still by far the best party during Bike Week. As usual, it is fun, it rocks and it is for a very good cause. It’s full of custom bikes and of celebs of the industry (can you recognize them all in this picture?) and this year there was a photography exhibit by Michael Lichter and Josh Kurplus, a display of 16 Fender guitars customized by some of the motorcycle industry most recognized talents. Bert Baker, Russell Mitchell and Billy Lane went on stage to auction some memorabilia to raise money for Soldiers’ Angels, a volunteer-based nonprofit organization supporting all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. Through special projects, dedicated teams and individuals, Soldiers’ Angels is supporting our troops and make a visible difference in the lives of our service members and their families. Although I can’t give you a number at this time, recession or not, the different auctions were successful, showing once again the legendary generosity of our industry. After that, why not having fun with a hot beauty contest where in my (shared) opinion…all girls were winners.
Willie’s Custom Bike Show. The Place To See And To Be Seen
Published by March 5th, 2009 in Builders, Customs, Editorial and Events.Hot bikes and hot rods celebrating the technology of the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Hot girls because chicks dig these bikes. Tattoos and rockabilly because…I don’t have to explain. Willie’s Tattoo Chop Bike Show located on US 1 in Ormond Beach is on every Thursday of Bike Week the place to see (bikes, girls, friends) and to be seen. Problem is that the success of Willie’s Show is so big that it would deserve a parking lot and a shop backyard 3 times bigger. Density of old school bikes is so dense that you would have to be as skinny as me to get a chance to walk between them. But nobody seems to care too much. It’s all about admiring creativity and celebrating friendship around the same God Of Customs. One of the best bike shows of the year. Only true bikers tinkering with and maintening their bikes can understand.
After 3 days of cold winds under a solid blue sky, on Wednesday temperatures started to rise. Florida looks again like Florida. Had breakfast this morning with several members of the American & European press. Italian reporters are here in big numbers. Good, they came with their beautiful wives and girlfriends. Attendance is growing by the hour. Too soon to put out some numbers. I assume they will be OK taking in account the squeeze on every American wallet. Continue reading ‘Daytona Bike Week Flash News 3’
They are in Daytona this week, and in case you miss them there or don’t go to Bike week, you can check them out right now in this video. They are both the work of sculptor Kim Brandell of Brandell Studios in Key Largo, Florida.
Blogging Days & Nights. What Time Is It?
Published by March 4th, 2009 in Builders, Customs, Editorial and Events. How is it to cover Bike week? Bloggers and reporters from all over the world find themselves working together late at night or very soon in the morning in improvised press rooms looking like hotel lobbies, bars or like here private homes. Tonight, while wild parties are going on in the bars of Daytona Main Street and of Ormond Beach US1, I found myself sharing pictures and stories (and a poor Wi-Fi connection) with famous photographer/reporter Horst Rosler. Here how it looks just before I upload these few lines (it’s also Daytona Mac Week). Notice: no alcohol, just coffee, white bread and beef jerky! But tomorrow night, we are off, both invited to the Industry Biker Fusion Party. Of course, we love what we do…

Elvis Presley In Daytona Thanks To Master Bronze Artist Jeff Decker
Published by March 3rd, 2009 in Editorial and Events. The 1st big artistic event of this 29th Daytona Bike Week was the unveiling of the bronze casting of Elvis Presley with his famous 1956 KHK Harley-Davidson, one of the most indelible images of motorcycling. This magnificent art piece is the work of super talented Jeff Decker who makes not only motorcycle bronzes (his most recent large scale 1:1.5 bronze is at the entrance of the Milwaukee Harley-Davidson Museum), but who also collects custom classic & custom motorcycles. This Elvis bronze was commissioned by Bruce Rossmeyer from Destination Daytona, took 2 years from conception to realization, and is now on permanent display at the entrance of his Harley-Davidson dealership. Elvis casting is about 1500 pounds heavy and required an amazing 150 different molds. And if you wonder who is this woman in the picture, her name is Billie Mae Smith and she dated Elvis in 1955. She made the trip for this unveiling and was caught on camera kissing her bronze Elvis (pictures Horst Rosler).
It can surprise you, but this year Daytona Bike Week features new just opened permanent shops all over the Volusia County. Among them, at Destination Daytona, Des Hockley a Canadian from Toronto opened “The Ultimate Seats Co” and there is also a new shop called “Dino’s Motorcycle Detailing”. In the area, a shop called “Roar Motorcycles” that caters to women bikers. On US 1, a new building is in construction to house Custom Cruisers USA a company originally based in the UK. I hear that the Daytona Economic Development Board would like the area to become a hub for plants that mass produce motorcycles or related paraphernalia. Those types of operations are supposed to create more jobs and pay higher wages than custom shops.

Daytona Bike Week Flash News 1
Published by February 27th, 2009 in Builders, Customs, Editorial and Events.Getting updates coming from Daytona (I will arrive Monday morning). I hear that arrivals yesterday and this morning are a little bit slow. But it’s only Friday. Is it going to be Bike Weak? (no, it’s not a typo) – Billy lane called me. His mind is full of new projects. I admire him for this. He will be in Daytona most of the time at 2-Wheelers on Main street with his new purchased “Timeless” bike. Should not stay stock a long time. I am in charge to show the “Timeless’ to the foreign press – Tuesday’s Builders Breakfast is cancelled. Bummer. Charity work is the 1st to suffer – Bruce Rossmeyer’s Destination Daytona is the new coffee place. Arrive soon (before 9am) and you get a chance to get a parking place and a coffee before lunch arrives – Beach Street seems to get some new interest. Paul Yaffe should setup there, waterway side – Nice sunny weather (78-58 F) should hold till Sunday (rain), and sunny again to mid week.
About to leave for Daytona Bike Week, something I know for sure is that I am going to see more stock & custom trikes. And you guessed it, the trend is Retrooooooo! As an example of what you can build is this nostalgia body kit offered by Santiago Chopper out of Tampa, FL. where you can retro-fit almost any engine (tell them what you want to do) or even convert your stock Harley 2-wheeler. Do it yourself (they sell all the parts you need) or ask them to build it with the powerplant and in the color of your choice. Santiago Chopper.
Grand Opening Of Indian Motorcycle Of The Twin Cities
Published by February 26th, 2009 in Builders, Editorial and Events.D Day for Art Welch, a long time Cyril Huze Parts Dealer and faithful reader of this Blog. This Saturday February 28th he is opening Indian Motorcycle Of The Twin Cities, Minnesota, Midwest largest Indian Motorcycle dealer. Quite an accomplishment for him from his humble beginnings in the business as Twin City Custom Cycles in a 800 sq. foot shop. In addition to the traditional festivities, the interesting part of the story is that his Indian dealership is just next door to the St Paul Harley-Davidson dealership. Capitalism and competition at its best! Which door will clients exit when riding a brand new bike? I will know very soon. The party starts at 10 am till’ 5 pm. Indian Motorcycle Of The Twin Cities: 2967 Hudson Road in St Paul, MN. Tel: 615-765-9988. .
All men know at least one Barbie Doll (huh!). And Barbie is celebrating its 50th anniversary from the “pink floor” of Mattel in Los Angeles (the second floor of the building dedicated to all Barbie’s makeovers).
She has the age of a lot of Harley riders but she still looks pretty good to me with no wrinles or extra pounds. Our Harley-Davidson Barbie Doll had a pretty busy life. You have seen her riding from rally to rally around the world, even playing guitar in a rock band! When not riding she has been a fashion model, stewardess, gym instructor, nurse, etc, even paleontologist!
In addition she has survived past recessions and is a symbol of optimism. Let’s all celebrate her birthday. She’s a doll. Barbie By Mattel.
