I wish that all those intending to paint their motorcycle, those who are going to choose a painter, and all those who have a bike built and painted under the supervision of a custom shop read this book. First, they will understand that the masterpieces they are exposed to require a lot of time of preparation before the first shot of paint is applied. They will also appreciate much more the long experience and hard work involved in producing the masterpieces adorning our custom bikes. JoAnn Bortles is a well known world-class motorcycle painter, and also a writer and photographer. I know her since 15 years, have collaborated with her, and during all these years saw her improving her techniques through many trials & errors. Her book, written on a conversational tone, is a guide which doesn’t focus only on the end result but on all the steps to accomplish a great project In it she is honest and not afraid to tell you anecdotes of her own past screw-ups and disillusionments. She dispels any common thought that the task of painting a custom bike requires only a talent received from God and demonstrates that patience, persistence, practice and knowledge of the materials used are the main ingredients to a successful paint job. It’s a true nuts-and-bolts book illustrated by many examples, and if you want to paint your motorcycle or start a painter career, it’s an absolute must read. How To Paint Your Motorcycle

Street Vibrations In Reno, The Biggest Little City In The World
Published by September 19th, 2007 in Builders, Customs, Editorial and Events.Reno Street Vibrations started in 1994 and the 14th edition started today. The Nevada event (Sept.19/23) is the motorcycle version of Hot August Nights celebrating the cars and culture of the 1950s and ’60s. About 25,000 bikers are expected to show up. Organizers of Street Vibrations estimate the economic impact of all the horsepower in town is close to $67 million. "It’s a great event," said Rick Murdock, an executive at downtown Reno’s Eldorado Hotel Casino. "The town is packed. It brings a lot of good people to town. These people have discretionary income to spend on entertainment, gaming, shows, and food. They’re a great demographic. They ride and show off their bikes and can do a lot of new things added to the event every year. This year, for example, Street Vibrations is expanded to include non-bike events pleasing bikers such as women roller derby with women’s teams competing Saturday night on an outdoor track in the plaza in front of Reno City Hall. It is a good idea for all rallies. Give the public more entertainment by offering more activities beyond custom builders & manufacturers displays. Street Vibrations.
Can Women Save The Motorcycle Industry?
Published by September 18th, 2007 in Builders, Customs and Editorial.Statistics tell us that 1 out of 10 motorcyclists on the road is a woman. Women seem to be the only growing segment of a graying industry. We all know that US sales of motorcycles have slow down a lot since 2005 obliging Harley-Davidson to temporarily close plants to adjust production to today’s sluggish market. Leader brands make huge efforts to incite more women to move from the back seat to the driver seat. Hence dealers organized “garage parties” where women are familiarized with motorcycles and the art of riding. Favored brands are Kawasaki and Harley-Davidson (respectively 15% and 12% of sales). So is it possible that women replace the baby boomers moving away from motorcycles? I don’t think so, except if they are the girlfriends or wives of new younger riders and they are offered a choice of bikes more specifically conceived for their needs and morphology. We talk a lot about attracting new young male riders with more affordable motorcycles. But the women going now from back to front seat are going to age with their companions. So, I really think that the efforts to attract a new younger clientele to the sport should be directed at the same time to both young men and women. What do you think?

Harley-Davidson Closing Production For One Week
Published by September 15th, 2007 in Builders, Customs and Editorial. After dealer sales fell sharply in August Harley-Davidson reports that it will curb motorcycle production by shutting down production at 3 Wisconsin factories for a week after Thanksgiving. Those plants include the power-train operations in Wauwatosa and Menomonee Falls and another in Tomahawk. Assembly plants in Kansas, Missouri, and York, Pennsylvania, also will shut down the week of November 26th. The company intends to take additional steps to achieve production reductions, but didn’t give details. The company will not pay its employees during the shutdown, said Bob Klein, a spokesman for Harley-Davidson. Workers laid off during the shutdowns will continue to receive health care coverage, company spokeswoman Rebecca Bortner. The manufacturer will recall all laid-off workers after the shutdown. Harley-Davidson believes this solution is the best option for balancing the needs of their stakeholders.

105th Anniversary Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 Truck
Published by September 8th, 2007 in Builders, Customs and Editorial. In 2008 both Ford and Harley-Davidson will celebrate their 105th anniversaries. And to celebrate Ford has unveiled a new version of its Harley-Davidson F-150 truck. It’s the third supercharged version of the high-spec pickup, with ten configurations produced since 1999. Over 60,000 Ford Harley-Davidson trucks have been sold since the first tester model caught the imagination of the American market. Americans love options, so there are a couple of engine configurations available. Standard is the 223kW 5.4-litre Triton V8. But that’s a bit soft compared to long-time Ford tuner Saleen’s blown and intercooled V8 that thunders out 335kW and 677Nm of torque. It comes in 4×2 or all-wheel-drive versions. Obviously, this is a label-basher’s ride with a lot of bling cosmetics. Details like 105th Anniversary Harley-Davidson F-150′ badges on the fenders and tailgate, a chromed-up billet grille, blacked out headlights, color coded everything, body kit goodies, 22-inch forged polished aluminum Colors are traditional black on black, amethyst monochromatic or a new black and vintage copper
CEO Jim Ziemer: Harley-Davidson Lowers Forecast
Published by September 7th, 2007 in Builders and Editorial. It’s not a surprise. Today, Harley-Davidson Chief Executive Officer Jim Ziemer said in a statement to Wall Street that retail sales dropped sharply in August, leading the company to reduce shipments because it no longer expects higher worldwide dealer retail sales in the second half of the year. Harley-Davidson expects now a net income decline of 4 to 6 percent compared to 2006 levels. Harley-Davidson is lowering its planned third-quarter shipments to 86,000 to 88,000 units from its prior estimate for shipments of 91,000 to 95,000 units. Full-year shipments are expected to be 328,000 to 332,000 units

It is designed and manufactured in the US by a new builder called David Anthony out of San Diego. My Passion For Everything Custom
Published by September 4th, 2007 in Builders, Customs and Editorial. As far as I can remember my youth in France, I always had a passion for everything American custom culture (Dean’s & Brando’s movies, rock & roll, hot rods, Harley’s, Von Dutch art, etc). For example, I became the coolest kid on the block by customizing my model cars and motorcycles. I had to have my first bike stolen in the street of Paris, an electric blue Harley-Davidson Electra Glide, to realize I was so much in love with her. I was inconsolable, heart broken, with no money to replace it. Certainly the 1st time in my life than an inanimate object (but is it?) caused me such pain. Then intense business life in advertising in a big city prevented me to ride much until a new love, human this time, and American, of course, made me settle definitively in the US.
America became my escape route to find a new place in my life where I could merge my 2 passions of designing and motorcycling. Riding the big landscapes of the West made me feel like starring in a movie. Customizing for my friends was exhilarating and made me access the trophies stage of the most prized bike shows in Daytona & Sturgis. Rich people liked my unusual designs mixing pure Californian hot rod stance with European art deco details while following a very Zen approach where simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. America always fired my dreams. Now design & motorcycles forged my new professional identity: custom motorcycle designer & builder.
My mission is to give each clients motorcycle an added value aesthetically, technically and financially. For this I must define a unique motorcycle personality. I hate improvisation. All my designs have an objective, a strategy and a justification in my eyes and the ones of my client. I am in charge of writing the storyboard of the new motorcycle. All projects, simple or sophisticated, are first designed on paper: research of a theme and name, drawing of the bike under different angles, sketch and final blue prints of the custom parts, seat design, graphic research, layout and choice of colors for the paint job etc. It is only after client approval that, under my supervision, my team of craftsmen handles the fabrication, molding, painting and final assembly process. I am a designer loving motorcycles. I want custom motorcycles to be time enduring rolling pieces of art.
The way I see it, succeeding a custom motorcycle is to conceive it such a way that it will become both an object of intense pleasure and affection for the client and a star in the motorcycle world. The process of creation and customization has no visible end. It means that probably like all artists I am obsessed with reaching perfection and always over doing everything beyond client’s expectations. Trying to become both a master of design simplicity and beauty and at the same time a master of technological complications require an exhausting amount of love and dedication. I will never design and build a custom motorcycle just because somebody could buy it. I never count billing hours, just expecting from my client fairness and appreciation. It’s probably the difference between a motorcycle shop doing custom work and a true custom designer and builder. I customize as much for myself than for a client because creating something never done before, beautiful, working better than the competition, appreciated by its owner and admired by the public at large is the greatest joy anyone can get in any profession.

Harley-Davidson Museum. What To Expect
Published by September 2nd, 2007 in Builders, Editorial and Events.Expected to draw 350,000 visitors a year, the museum will be one of Milwaukee’s biggest tourist attractions, much like Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Atlanta’s Coca-Cola Museum. For years, Harley-Davidson’s archives were kept fairly secret and shrouded in mystery company. That will change dramatically next summer when the motorcycle maker opens its 130,000-square-foot museum complex. Harley’s vast archives include motorcycles, clothing, photos, posters, promotional materials and magazines. There’s a trading card featuring Elvis Presley on a Harley, 1931 Harley, watch fobs and a 1980s black-powder pistol with the Harley name emblazoned on the side of the barrel. The motorcycle collection includes one bike from each of Harley’s 105 years. It also includes some Harley bicycles, made from 1917 to 1923, as well as snowmobiles and golf carts the company made years ago. The clothing collection includes kidney belts, which riders wore to protect their lower backs and kidneys. A customized Harley named King Kong will be displayed. It’s more than 13 feet long, weighs more than 1,000 pounds, and has two Knucklehead engines. There will be a life-size replica of a 1920s board race track, complete with Harley race bikes "banking" on a corner. Back then, motorcycles raced on tracks made from wooden planks. Harley will display Art Deco motorcycles from the 1930s and machine-gun-toting military models. Other eye-catchers include a 1956 KH owned by Elvis. Harley purchased the Elvis bike in the 1990s from a private owner in Memphis described as the King’s "friend and riding companion." He obtained it from Elvis in 1958 as repayment on a loan. The museum’s admission fee hasn’t been set yet, but the 20-acre site will include a riverwalk and green space where the public can hang out for free. Aside from the museum exhibits, there will be a 150-seat restaurant, along with meeting and special event space for things like weddings.
With the authorization of Dennis Johnson Dealer News Senior Editor, I reproduce some new information regarding the bankruptcy of Titan and the following sales of assets.
“An Arizona bank has filed an objection to the proposed sale of now-bankrupt Titan Motorcycle Co.’s assets to Arizona Motorcycle Works for $300,000. In papers filed Aug. 27 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the district of Arizona, First National Bank of Arizona claims it has a first rights lien on Titan’s assets and that the sale price undervalues the fair market value of the property. The bank also claims that Titan’s owner Don Proudfoot and Hope Smith, a principal in Arizona Motorcycle Works, have a personal relationship and that the latter company is subtenant of Titan’s and that this relationship has not been disclosed. These two allegations call into question that the proposed sale represents a good-faith, arms-length negotiation" between the two entities, the complaint claims. FNBA states that Proudfoots’ company, TMC Acquisitions, owes the bank about $813,000 on a $1.5 million business loan that the company took out in February 2006. "The amount due and owing to FNBA is substantially above" the sale price, the bank claims. The bank says that business loan was secured with TMC’s property, which includes inventory, accounts, equipment, the Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin for Titan’s motorcycles, listed as collateral. Arguably, the assets no longer belong to the debtor or the estate are not subject to any potential sale to AMW, or any other prospective purchase," lawyers for FNBA claim. Proudfoot originally filed for Chapter 11 protection in January. At the time, listed among the company’s top 20 creditors were S&S Cycle, Daytec Cente; SuperTrapp, and Mid-USA Motorcycle Parts. This marks the second time that the Titan brand has gone bankrupt, the first time in 2001 under chairman and CEO Francis Keery. In March 2007 Titan’s owner Don Proudfoot was quoted in Powersports Business magazine saying "I sincerely believe this is a year of change in 2007. When the dust settles, there will be many fewer people (OEMs and aftermarket manufacturers) out there."
