Clyde. An All Steel Custom Bagger With Athletic Aesthetics.

TD2TD3TD4Fortunately, not all custom builders working on Baggers are obsessed with creating the one with the tallest front wheel, the loudest and most show off sound system and the craziest cartoonish paint job, sadly often screaming tacky 1 mile away.

These customization rules don’t belong and will never belong to T.D. Ward’s code of design at Rods & Rides. All the creations rolling out of his small west St Louis, MO shop, either Bobbers, Board Trackers, Choppers and now Baggers share the same finesse for lines and superb attention in the tiniest details.

The most celebrated custom motorcycles are rarely improvised as you build them and I am pretty certain that T.D. spends a lot of time thinking about what he wants to achieve before opening the first tools drawer. Simply because good design works wonders well before fab work.

This lean and elegant Bagger was built for Charlie, a commercial painter, T.D’s best friend for these last 25 years. Long friendship is probably the best foundation for a clear client to builder briefing. Not much talking during the build because they understand each other so well, except about naming the project. Charlie asked if it would look like somewhat like a Glide, to which question T.D. answered that it will be far apart from a Harley tourer the way everybody imagine it. Charlie laughed and replied, so it will be a “Clyde”…

TD6 TD55TD7bisTD7terThe crew of Rods And Rides started with a good clean platform. Their own chassis straight bent and welded from mild steel tubing. In it they craddled a rubber mounted 120″ El Bruto motor and a Delkron 6 speed FXR style transmission. Once the chassis was complete and liking to mix new and old school styles in all his builds, T.D. Ward asked Mark Evans at American Suspension to machine for him a custom air adjustable Springer type front end. Continue reading ‘Clyde. An All Steel Custom Bagger With Athletic Aesthetics.’

The 2016 Coast To Coast Race Of The Century Cannonball On 1916 Or Earlier Motorcycles

centuryrace13304 miles in 15 stages from Atlantic City to Carlsbad , California. This 2016 coast to coast Race Of The Century Cannonball run will probably be the most difficult ride since the inaugural event in 2010.

Isam, Jr., owner of Jurassic Racing in Sturgis, South Dakota, and founder of the Motorcycle Cannonball Run announced today that the historic transcontinental event scheduled for 17 days in September has its roster full and the route is set.

Though held on U.S. soil, the 2016 iteration is for all intents and purposes, a worldwide event. With 95 entries from 25 states, 9 countries and 4 continents, this extraordinary event will indeed be watched by the world as motorcycles of all marques tackle an arduous coast-to-coast route across America.

centuryrace2The entire route will include less that 100-miles of interstate roadways. A week into travel, riders will have a day of rest, repairs, and some festivities in the well-known Western era cattle town of Dodge City, Kansas on September 18. After a total of some 3,304 miles, the ride is slated to conclude on Sunday, September 25 in Carlsbad, CA. The machines such as Henderson, Indian, Triumph, Harley-Davidson, JAP, Excelsior, BSA, Thor, etc must be powered by an original engine. Many things could be changed and updates made for safety sake. But the core of the machine must be 1916 or earlier. Continue reading ‘The 2016 Coast To Coast Race Of The Century Cannonball On 1916 Or Earlier Motorcycles’

The Rogue Rear Fender. A Bolt-On Replacement For Custom Harley Panhead And Shovelhead Motorcycles

1lowbrow-customs-rogue-fender2lowbrow-customs-rogue-fenderThe Rogue rear fender is a heavy-gauge steel fender that is bolt-on fitment to 1958 – 1984 Harley-Davidson Big Twins using the included chrome plated fender struts and mounting hardware. Instead of the typical choice to run a stock rear fender or a repop, it is a great custom alternative.

“Built right! The UPS man handed me a heavy box which had me thinking I ordered the wrong item. Negative!! It was the right thing. This fender is no lightweight POS fender. Very thick and substantial. For the people still dedicated to these old gems, this is the perfect fender upgrade.” – Packrat

“Fit and finish of the fender and brackets is top quality. There was no half way here. Quality is excellent. You definitely get what you paid for.” – B. Dub. More info at toll-free 1-855-456-9276. Order online at Lowbrow Customs (Panhead featured by The Gasbox)

hDMore power. More comfort. More control. Today, Harley-Davidson redefined its touring lineup by unveiling the all-new Milwaukee-Eight™ engine, the ninth Big Twin in its history, plus all-new front and rear suspension.
“These are the most powerful, most responsive and most comfortable Touring motorcycles ever offered by Harley-Davidson,” said Scott Miller, Vice-President of Styling and Product Development Strategy. “The unmistakable look, sound and feel of Harley-Davidson Touring motorcycles rise to even greater heights with the improvements we’ve made this year. Milwaukee8-1Milwaukee8-2New Milwaukee-Eight Engine. The new Milwaukee-Eight engine, the ninth Big Twin design in the company’s storied lineage, is a clean-sheet design that combines the classic look, sound and feel of Harley-Davidson Big Twin engines with improvements in every aspect of engine performance. “The Milwaukee-Eight engine carries the legacy of Harley-Davidson Big Twins into the future,” said Chief Powertrain Engineer Alex Bozmoski. “While respecting the essential Big Twin character, we’ve created an all-new motor. Every aspect of performance, durability and styling has been improved as a direct response to the voice of Harley-Davidson customers around the world.”

Retaining the classic 45-degree V-Twin cylinder angle, the Milwaukee-Eight engine produces 10 percent more torque than previous year models and features four-valve cylinder heads that offer 50 percent more intake and exhaust flow capacity. The Milwaukee-Eight engine is counter-balanced to cancel 75 percent of primary vibration at idle, retaining the classic feel of a Harley® V-Twin while being very smooth at highway speeds. Lawsuit Accuses Skully Founders Of Looting The Company. A lawsuit filed by a former bookkeeper at Skully helmets accuses the company co-founders of using Skully corporate accounts as their personal ‘piggy banks'” to rent an apartment, visit a strip club, rent a Lamborghini and buy two Dodge Vipers and four motorcycles, among other personal expenses. Skully raised nearly $2.4 million in an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign, mostly from supporters who hoped to be among the first to get the company’s high-tech helmets. It appears likely none of those investors will get their money back as the company has shut down. The lawsuit was filed in the Superior Court of California in San Francisco County by Isabelle Faithhauer. The lawsuit says she worked as an assistant to Skully co-founders Marcus and Mitchell Weller and was fired when she objected to fraudulent accounting practices. The company has shut down. It’s unlikely unsecured creditors like those who ordered helmets will get anything.

Breaking News. Harley-Davidson Unveiled The All-New Harley-Davidson Milwaukee Eight Engine 107’ And 114”.

Harley-Davidson_Milwaukee-Eight_engineThe all-new Harley-Davidson® Milwaukee-Eight™ engine, ninth in the lineage of the company’s iconic Big Twin engines, delivers more power and an improved motorcycling experience for riders and passengers while retaining the iconic look, sound and feel of its predecessors.

An all-new design, the Milwaukee-Eight engine offers quicker throttle response, more passing power, purer sound, a smoother ride and more of the feeling riders want from a Harley-Davidson Touring motorcycle engine. 10% more torque. higher compression ratio. 50% more untake and exhaust flow.

“The guiding principle behind the Milwaukee-Eight engine was our voice of customer research from every region of the world,” said Scott Miller, Harley-Davidson Vice-President of Styling and Product Development Strategy. “Riders asked us to create a new engine designed to enhance their motorcycle touring experience in every way. Those same voices also demanded that we stay true to our legacy and respect the defining elements of a Harley-Davidson V-Twin. It was a big challenge, but one we’ve met. With the Milwaukee-Eight, a new era of Harley-Davidson power, performance and innovation has been forged.”

Harley-Davidson_2017_Touring_motorcycleNew Milwaukee-Eight engines will power every 2017 Harley-Davidson Touring and Trike motorcycle model. Milwaukee-Eight engines will be offered in two displacements and three variations: Milwaukee-Eight 107 (107 CID, 1750cc) featuring precision oil-cooled cylinder heads for the Street Glide®/Street Glide® Special, Road Glide®/Road Glide Special®, Electra Glide® Ultra Classic®, Road King® and Freewheeler® models. Twin-Cooled™ Milwaukee-Eight 107 (107 CID, 1750cc) featuring liquid-cooled cylinder heads for the Ultra Limited/Ultra Limited Low, Road Glide® Ultra and Tri Glide® Ultra models. Twin-Cooled Milwaukee-Eight 114 (114 CID,1870cc) featuring liquid-cooled cylinder heads for the CVO™ Limited and CVO™ Street Glide® models.

More Power.

Each Milwaukee-Eight engine produces 10 percent more torque than the engine it replaces in Touring models. In addition to increased displacement, the Milwaukee-Eight engine features a higher compression ratio and four-valve cylinder heads with 50 percent more intake and exhaust flow capacity. The valve train requires no adjustment as the design of the rocker arms enables valve lash to be set at the factory for life. Dual spark plugs for each cylinder contribute to more-efficient combustion. A single chain-driven camshaft is lighter, mechanically less complex and creates less friction and noise.

“The Milwaukee-Eight engine retains the classic Harley-Davidson 45-degree V-Twin design,” said Alex Bozmoski, Harley-Davidson Chief Powertrain Engineer, who led the development team. “It also retains the power characteristic that is the real legacy of the Harley-Davidson Big Twin: strong low-end torque with a broad, flat power curve through the mid-range that’s ideal for the Touring motorcycle rider.”

Quicker Acceleration The Milwaukee-Eight engine weighs the same as the engines it replaces, so all of its extra power contributes directly to improved acceleration performance.

• The Milwaukee-Eight 107 accelerates 11 percent quicker 0-60 mph, equal to a two to three bike length improvement, and 11 percent quicker from 60-80 mph in top gear, equal to a one to two bike length improvement, compared to the Twin Cam High Output 103.
• The Milwaukee-Eight 114 accelerates 8 percent quicker 0-60 and 12 percent quicker 60-80 than the Twin Cam 110™. Continue reading ‘Breaking News. Harley-Davidson Unveiled The All-New Harley-Davidson Milwaukee Eight Engine 107’ And 114”.’

BMW Titan Motorcycle Concept For Breaking Land Speed Records

bmwconcept1bmwconcept2Never to reach a BMW dealer and only a concept motorcycle to inspire the final design of a machine intended to break land speed records, it was designed by Turkey based designer Mehmet Doruk Erdem. Although the Titan looks like a the 2-wheel version of a Batmobile, some features hint at its true purpose. Of course the lie-flat riding position, a shark inspired very sleek body with fins, an airtight encased front end wheel for ideal aerodynamics and an exposed rear wheel held on a long and beefy swingarm yo add a powerful and menacing appearance. Of course, turbo-powered but with no metrics unveiled to this day. A 2-wheel predator that I would like to watch sliding on the Salts of Bonneville (if any salts left…)

Speedster. A Drag Style Sportster.

000-beaschli0000-beaschli00-beaschliTo look like a full blown custom when you do a bolt-on job is not easy task and most fail at this customization exercise. The merit is even greater when your platform is a Sportster, Harley-Davidson longest continuously manufactured model whose signature styling has remain almost the same since its introduction in 1957. Close to 60 years during which the Sporty has been customized or rebuilt in all possible ways and under the pretext of so many themes.

4-beaschli2-beaschli1-beaschli1bis-beaschliWith its very appealing price and being for many the motorcycle to access the Harley lineup (now, with the addition of the Street), all official Harley dealers know that showing a custom version of the Sportster will sell more Sporties, but at only one condition. That the budget involved in creating your own doesn’t exceed 1/3rd of the paid stock version, or 1/2 for the most fortunate buyers.

8-beaschli10-beaschliAs the factory claims in its advertising the Iron 883 is for for those who want their first taste of that ride-hard-lifestyle, tearing up asphalt and backroads instead of polishing paint and chrome. For the project featured here, Baechli Harley-Davidson – the largest official dealer in Switzerland – wanted to reinforce the Sporty racing heritage and went for the full blown drag styling for an authentic, throwback riding experience that should please many youngsters and less young. Do You Really Know The Story Of Indian Motorcycle?

indian0Indian3Yes, you probably know that the original Indian nameplate died in 1953, that many devoted enthusiasts worked hard at maintaining the old bikes, that several companies tried to resurrect the brand (the most serious have been CNC in Gilroy, CA and Stellican Limited in Kings Mountain, NC) and that in 2011 Polaris Industries took over bringing the new Indian models to modern standards while still keeping the original mindset.

Indian1But do you know the full story from the start in 1901 as a bicycle manufacturer? How Indian got its worldwide reputation on the racetracks for performance and superb reliability? What provoked the brand post-war decline and demise? What is Polaris current engineering philosophy to create the new generation of Indians?

About 70% of this new hardcover book simply titled Indian Motorcycle: America’s First Motorcycle Company is devoted to the rise and fall of the company, then to the tale of all the efforts to resurrect the brand until Polaris succeeded in writing new pages of its history with modern models. The company’s storied heritage was written by respected journalist Darwin Holstrom, and boasts 227 quality color and 76 black and white photos and drawings. 3.8 pounds. 10.2 x 1 x 12.2”. 224 pages. $32.72. California Just Became The First US State To Legalize Lane-Splitting

lanesplittingchpLane Splitting, the maneuver to cut between cars, became legal yesterday Friday August 18 after California governor Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 51 into law . Until now lane splitting was not legal or illegal, just a tolerated riding practice. Since 2013, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) just had relatively vague guidelines for lane-splitting. They said that bikers should not lane-split when traffic is going faster than 30 mph and should stay within 10 mph of the speed of traffic while between lanes.

The CHP has now to develop precise guidelines for the motorcyclists who delight in waving between cars to go ahead of traffic. The new guidelines will take away the past subjectivity of police officers deciding if lane-slotting was or not reckless driving.

For those rebuilding old bikes and can’t find the right original parts and for those creating one-off parts for full blown custom projects the following feature tells the story of Christian Newman modifying his 1940 Harley Davidson Knucklehead. He knew, right off the bat, that he would soon be facing some interesting engineering challenges. After all, the final product he was imagining would only retain the motor and transmission from the original motorcycle, with the frame and almost everything else being completely custom.
