An ADP Lightspeed study of 219 V-Twin dealers from Jan.-Sept. 2012 shows that helmets represent 3 to 9% of total parts & accessories sales. The 219 V-twin dealerships polled sold $3.1 million in helmets during the first nine months of 2012, part of $60 million in total P&A sales. The state of Indiana ranks number 1 with helmets comprising 9.1% of P&A sales, the state of West Virginia ranking last with only 2.9% of P&A sales.
But how different state laws affect the sales of helmets? ADP Lightspeed data shows that states without a helmet law make up 7 of the top 10 states when considering helmet sales as a percentage of total P&A sales. Indiana, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Alaska, North Dakota and Puerto Rico are all states without helmet laws, and they ranked among the top 10 for helmets sales as a percentage of total P&A sales.
Among V-Twin dealers, Harley-Davidson, Tucker Rocky and Parts Unlimited are the source of 87 percent of helmet sales. In fact, nearly 2 out of 3 helmets (64 percent) sold by ADP Lightspeed V-twin dealerships is a Harley lid. Dealers who use ADP Lightspeed sold $2.07 million in Harley-Davidson helmets and helmet accessories over the January to September period. Tucker Rocky (12 percent) and Parts Unlimited (11 percent) follow, ahead of Western Power Sports (6 percent) and Fox Racing (3 percent). Continue reading ‘Running The Numbers On Helmets Sales’
Almost three years ago, David Uhl began a new painting that evokes the nostalgia and richness of days gone by. He took it to the Harley-Davidson Winter Dealer Meeting in Florida and worked on it while there, but once back home he set it aside for nearly two years.
Imagine his surprise when, at this year’s Summer dealer meeting, one of the dealers remembered the piece and asked what had happened with that painting.
They are now the proud owners of the original painting and it s now offered in a small edition of canvas prints.
Titled “Skipping School” (the winning name from David’s FaceBook contest), each canvas print will come signed and numbered with a matching Certificate of Authenticity. The framed price is $975 (plus shipping). Orders must be placed by November 30th to guarantee Christmas delivery within the lower 48 United States.
Edition specifics: Image size 18 x 24. 25 canvas prints, plus 5 Artist Proofs and 5 Hors d’ commerce. Conact Hreg Rhodes. 303-913-4840. greg@uhlstudios.com

The City has recently released the final 2012 Rally figures indicating an estimated attendance of 445,700 an increase of more than 7% over 2011. With the successful completion of the 2012 Sturgis Rally, the City is now preparing for the 2013 Rally with an eye on the 75th Anniversary in 2015.
On November 5, The History Channel featured American Pickers, Pawn Stars, and American Restoration episodes with a “Sturgis Road Trip” theme. We anticipate this exposure will spike the curiosity of those who have never attended the Sturgis Rally and will spur even more attendees in the next few years. This significant growth of the Rally in general is leading Sturgis to expand its rally vending properties and Sponsorship Program. In addition to the City of Riders Expo, Rally Headquarters and Sturgis Liquor Store Lot, the City is constructing a new plaza between the Lazelle corridor and Legendary Main Street. This is sure to become a prime vending location with one of the highest foot traffic counts in the entire Black Hills region. The City is also in the process of partnering with a national publisher to expand the content and distribution of the Official Rally Magazine. The new Boom! Audio High Performance Boom! Bagger Speakers from Harley-Davidson ($159.95 Fairing front and$ 159.95 Tour-Pak rear) replace the original equipment speakers for improved clarity and performance of the the stock speakers on 1998-2005 Electra Glide® models. A two-way speaker design with a separate bass and midrange driver and grill-mounted tweeter provides improved high-frequency response that helps cut through the road and wind noise. Increased speaker sensitivity provides louder output than Original Equipment speakers at the same volume setting, resulting in reduced distortion for improved clarity at speed. You don’t get many opportunities to buy a one-off custom made famous by a TV Show like “Biker Build-Off”. This Panhead Digger style bike was built by Mondo Porras at Denver’s Choppers during season two, episode 5 of the series while competing against Indian Larry and his “Chain Of Mistery” chopper. (As matter of fact it was at the time this episode was shot that Larry DeSmedt died on August 30, 2004.) Mondo’s Digger bike has been featured in magazines, books and TV all over the world and is one of the most recognizable bikes ever built. It’s now for sale on eBay (3 days left!) with a starting bid at $20,000.
Listening to the speeches of the 2 candidates during their final mad dash for votes and waiting in line during hours to cast your ballot may have left you exhausted.

Harley XL Sportster Ironhead overhead-valve engine was introduced in 1957 as a 900 cc replaced by a 1000 cc from 1972 to 1984. A cast Iron Heads Sportster engine is still, or is more than ever, a prize possession for many custom builders. So, it didn’t matter to Jesse Bassett from The GasBox Shop that the only thing left of a rusted pile of 1976 XL parts was the engine and a rear drum. He had the motor, the basis he needed for a very cool vintage style custom Sportster project on a budget. Continue reading ‘Custom Sportster Ironhead. Creativity On A Budget.’

“Turtlezip” sweaters were first introduced in the 1933 Harley-Davidson Accessories catalog. This new concept allowed the motorcycle rider to convert the sweater from a V neck style when unzipped, to the fashionable turtleneck when fully zipped to keep your neck nice and warm
In 1937, the sweaters had changed from one color to two tone sweaters. Harley-Davidson offered 128 color combinations at one time because motorcycle clubs wanted to have different colors from one another.
“Competition Sweaters” were introduced for racers in 1939 that featured “Harley-Davidson” in felt letters. The black and white sweater became a favorite of riders interested in racing, hill climbs and competitive sport. Continue reading ‘Harley-Davidson Sport Sweaters. Did You Know?’
Most of you never heard about the Bjorklund brothers (Mark & Carl) and of their Surper Rat Motorcycles built in Bellingham, WA. By traditional custom motorcycle standards, their work can be considered “heretical” Contraptions following no rules, with metal structures shaped to express the raw nature of a motorcycle. Their creations wear names that only them can fully explain, like “War Crimes””Labor Of Hate”, “Disheveled” and “Egg Salad” (center picture), a bike that they took to Bonneville in 2011, reaching a speed of 113 mph. It is powered by a 500cc Rotax motor mounted in a Knight Flat Track frame. After the jump, see a short video of “Egg Salad” racing in Bonneville. Continue reading ‘Super Rat Motorcycles’
Most of the United States reverts to standard time on the first Sunday in November. Clocks change at 2:00 a.m. local time. It means clocks fall back from 1:59 a.m. to 1:00 a.m.
Daylight Saving Time is NOT observed in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands, and Arizona.
Why 2:00 a.m? It was originally chosen as the changeover time because it was practical and minimized disruption. Most people were at home and this was the time when the fewest trains were running. It is late enough to minimally affect bars and restaurants, and it prevents the day from switching to yesterday, which would be confusing. It is early enough that the entire continental U.S. switches by daybreak, and the changeover occurs before most early shift workers and early churchgoers are affected.
