Because of a resurgence of interest in Bonneville racing and because more machines are built by traditional custom builders who want to taste the Salts, more of these racing motorcycles are shown on the bike show tour before traveling to Utah. Although Mike Beland has a background in motorcycle racing, too busy at his West Palm Beach A1 Cycles shop, he never made it to Bonneville to watch or participate. Continue reading ‘Show First. New David Uhl Release. A Tribute To The Shelby Cobra

As part of his continuing commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Shelby Cobra, David Uhl just completed “Hey Little Cobra”. David tells the story:

“After discovering an excellent story that was hiding in the early ’60’s, I came to know a famous singer/songwriter, Carol Connors. Around the time that Carol charmed America with the single “To Know Him Is To Love Him”, she became friends with Carroll Shelby. A couple of years later when all the songs about cars were featuring Hot Rods (like the Beach Boys’ “Little Deuce Coupe”), Shelby approached her about writing a song about his Cobra. He further stated that if it became a #1 hit, he would give her a car…

Well, the 1964 song “Hey Little Cobra” shot to the top of the charts and Carol got a brand new burgundy Cobra! Continue reading ‘New David Uhl Release. A Tribute To The Shelby Cobra’

Breaking News. Saxon Motorcycles Is For Sale.

Mark Borodkin, Chief Executive Officer of Saxon Motorcycles is looking for a buyer for his small production custom motorcycle business.  Saxon was originally founded in 2004 at the top of the custom choppers craze, trying to offer production motorcycles at a more reasonable price point than the competition. A lack of originality, multiple warranty issues, a very deficient customer service and of course rapidly deteriorating economic conditions obliged the original owners to sell the company.

On september 24, 2009 Saxon Motorcycles was acquired by Mark Borodkin and Tim Gueltzow, with the intention to revamp the company. The plan included first a survey of all current and potential Saxon owners and dealers to find out areas that needed immediate attention to build a positive Saxon experience . Second, the release of several new models built in a new 40,000 sq.ft facility located in Gilbert, Arizona and equipped to build up to 1200 motorcycles a year. Continue reading ‘Breaking News. South Dakota Launches Motorcycle Education Safety Website

South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard, Public Safety Secretary Trevor Jones and Tourism Secretary Jim Hagen unveiled yesterday a new website named South Dakota Rides stated to promote motorcycle education and safety. The governor also has designated next week as Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Week in South Dakota.

A look at the website shows very little regarding safety, mainly South Dakota on and off-road laws and a form to register to education classes. In addition, a map, a forum (not started) and pictures gallery section (not started, yet.) For now, a quite poor content website for a Stating hosting the largest motorcycle rally in the world. I hope it will improve.

El Fuego Drag Race Style Bike

Three months ago I published a custom from Thunderbike Germany in exactly the same Drag Racing style and overall stance, painted in the same typical Harley black and orange colors. So, why to do it again when this new one could be considered just a simple variation of what you have already seen? Of course, the wheels…. Contrary to popular biker belief, the very fat rear tire is not dead, and in Europe it is still well and alive. Or trust me, you would not see them popping out one after each other from the most reputable shops of the old continent. Continue reading ‘El Fuego Drag Race Style Bike’

Show Me Your Office. Rick Fairless.

Rick Fairless office at Strokers Dallas is not what you thought. It’s much more Rick Fairless that you imagined…

In cardboard, Rick is always present at the office even when he is far away on the show tour flashing his bikes paint jobs and tie dye tees. During a visit you will talk to him seated on one of the two chairs coming (ripped off?) from the Dallas Cowboys stadium. If your telephone conversation is boring he will start his in-office old Triumph, pretend he is testing a bike on the lift, can’t hear you and will hang up.

On the walls, shelves with a lot of empty (!) collectible bottles and Harley beer cans, posters of John Lennon, Frank Zappa, Marilyn Monroe and of Bettie Page The Queen Of Hearts. No explanation given to me about the pairs of old and wild Converse shoes waiting to be burned on exhaust pipes. Many old motorcycle tags, framed magazine bike features and a sign stating “Hippies Use Backdoor. No exceptions.” But who is the hippie in the house?

During the 25th Anniversary of Rolling Thunder in Washington, D.C. on Memorial Day, four custom motorcycles by four builders Mike Tomas, Billy Lane, Brigitte Bourget,Dar Holdsworth) will be unveiled. His Coast Guard tribute bike is based upon a 1945 Indian Chief and Mike tells me that he will ride it to the Rolling Thunder Anniversary event for the unveiling. He intends to leave California on May 5th riding to Washington DC via North Carolina. A friend riding his 1937 Bobber Chief will be with him. Fast Motorcycle Industry News

Royal Enfield’s Twin Cylinder To Become a Reality. Strong of its renewed success around the world, the Indian owned British retro classic Royal Enfield brand will have in the next 2 or 3 years a twin cylinder model in his lineup which could displace between 600 to 1,000cc. Royal Enfield is said to be leaning on a traditional layout, favoring a pushrod design with an overhead valve(OHV) rather than the more modern over head cam(OHC) design. The main idea to keep the pushrod design is to maintain the classic appeal of the motorcycle, with the characteristic low revving, high torque nature that most Royal Enfield motorcycles are well known for. Royal Enfield used to make parallel twin motorcycles in the 1950s and 60s called the Interceptor, which features a 700cc, air cooled, parallel twin cylinder engine. Royal Enfield also made 500cc parallel twin motorcycles before the 700cc versions. While the brand also built V-Twins in the early part of its history, it chose to go the parallel twin way during most part of its existence in England.
