Indian Motorcycle Daytona Bike Week Party Kickoff

Yesterday Friday evening, at the Hilton Daytona Beach Resort, motorcycle industry VIP’s and celebrities gathered for a Daytona Bike week kickoff party and to witness the unveiling of 6 custom builds based on the Indian Chieftain. 3 from Carey Hart, Paul Yaffe, and Brian Klock, and 3 others built by Indian dealers. Because it was very difficult to photograph all these bikes in full at night, I will release new complete photos in the coming days.

Before introducing each builder and their creations, President Of Indian Motorcycles Steve Menneto confirmed intensive plans to release many new models during the next 2 years. Because 2017 is the 50th anniversary of Burt Munro setting in Bonneville the Indian record of 183.59 mph or 305.89 km/h in the under 1000 cc class, be ready for very special Indian events, celebrations and models during the second half of the year. Can’t tell you more right now…(photos @ H. Roesler, M. Graf, R. Spring)

Joke Of The Week

The funniest Staff Meeting…

The boss of a Madison Avenue advertising agency called a spontaneous staff meeting in the middle of a particularly stressful week. (This is one pretty sharp boss!) When everyone gathered, the boss, who understood the benefits of having fun to relax, told the burned out staff the purpose of the meeting was to have a quick contest.

The theme: Viagra advertising slogans. The only rule was they had to use past American ad slogans, originally written for other products and capturing the essence of Viagra. Slight variations were acceptable. About 7 minutes later, they turned in their suggestions and created a top 10 list. With all the laughter and camaraderie, the rest of the week went very well for everyone! The top 10 were: Continue reading ‘Joke Of The Week’

The All-new Star Silver over Thunder Black Two-Tone Scout

Just a reminder that the Scout – offered until now in red. black or white – is offered in a two-tone Star Silver over Thunder Black with gold piping. Last year, Indian Motorcycle invested heavily in a brand new paint facility in Spearfish, South Dakota. The result of that means Indian can now produce motorcycles in more colors and finishes, not only for the Scout but also across the entire line-up.

Ducati Unveils Financing Program Looking Like Leasing For 2017 Model Motorcycles. The program for American consumers, which launched March 1, applies to all 2017 Ducati models through Ducati Premier Financing. “This is just one more tool Ducati is using to position our motorcycles to be] more accessible to a broader array of riders,” Jason Chinnock, Ducati North America’s Chief Executive, said. The financing looks like a leasing option with the owners having the option to sell the motorcycle privately, trade for a newer model, or pay it off. There are no wear-and-tear or mileage restrictions, and consumers can opt for a shorter trading cycle if they would like to trade-in for a newer model. Accessories can also be added. This financing option was used last year by Harley-Davidson offering for $7 a day a brand new Dark Custom Harley-Davidson Roadster model.

The New 2017 Harley Street-Rod Has Arrived. To Tackle The City Streets.

Beginning its big plan to launch 50 new models over 5 years, Harley-Davidson is debuting the new Street-Rod, a middle-weight motorcycle that the company says is built for maneuvering on congested city streets. Street-fighter inspired, the new model starts with the all-new High-Output Revolution X Engine – bred from the same stock as the engine Harley built for the XG750R flat track racer Harley is bringing to the Pro Circuit this year. You get a 43mm inverted front fork, piggyback shocks, dual-disc front brakes and a scooped racing seat. “Go fast. Lean hard. Leave traffic in your dust” could be the official slogan for this new Street-Rod.

Mathew Weber, chief engineer for the Street Rod for Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson, said the new model “is the most nimble motorcycle in the current Harley-Davidson line-up. The Street Rod will put the thrill in any urban commute. We’ve paired the potent new High Output Revolution X 750 engine with a revised chassis and up-rated suspension components to make the Street Rod quick, light-handling and easy to ride.”

The Street-Rod is dark, gets a strong H-D racing blood line with the objective of stirring the rebel soul of youngsters. From a marketing perspective, this new model join the Street and the Sportster in the entry level category where the future of all motorcycle manufacturers’ future is being built. Positioned as the sporting standard for young riders, it was logical for Harley-Davidson to use the XG750 flat-track racing platform to create a motorcycle putting the thrill in any urban commute. Koenigsegg Motorcycle Concept

It looks like most industrial designers working on cars can’t resist testing their skills on 2 wheelers. A Visit To Warren Lane. Custom Builder. Vintage Racer.

Last week, I made a pit stop at Atomic Metalsmith, Warren Lane’s custom shop in south Miami. Objective was to check out his latest works, in particular the custom 1917 Indian Powerplus that he will first exhibit at his own show in Daytona called “True Grit” (Sunday March 12), then race at the Smyrna Beach paved racetrack at the inaugural “Sons Of Speed” race (Saturday March 18) imagined by his brother Billy Lane.

“Sons Of speed” rules require an original or hand-built chassis fitted with a pre-1925 1000cc American V-Twin engine. Riders have complete freedom to customize bars, exhaust, fenders if any, foot pegs and fuel/oil tanks. But as Warren explained to me, he wanted to go even beyond that… Continue reading ‘A Visit To Warren Lane. Custom Builder. Vintage Racer.’

American Motorcycle Manufacturers Paying 100% Tariff Abroad. True Or False?

Last Tuesday evening, in a speech to Congress, Harley-Davidson was singled out by President Donald Trump as example of an American company having difficulties to sell abroad because of high tariff and taxes reaching 100%.

President Trump didn’t mention any country, but the example he was talking about is India imposing a 100% tariff on all imported motorcycles with engines larger than 600 cc. Other notable countries with high tariffs on large motorcycles (see chart) are Thailand, China, and Malaysia. Continue reading ‘American Motorcycle Manufacturers Paying 100% Tariff Abroad. Motorcycle Minimalism Illustrated

Any custom builder can make motorcycles look bolder and more complicated. As a matter of fact it takes much more creativity and more courage to go in the opposite direction. Many of you may find this contraption, an exercise in simplicity, quite ridiculous. Others will think that the guy who imagined it is kind of a genius, illustrating on 2 wheels the famous quote of Antoine de Saint-Exupery “Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”

In new or old metal, a motorcycle is really extremely simple if it’s built only from useful parts. For pleasure, just add a few beautiful touches. With Easy (like a Sunday morning), I am convinced that Germany, Berlin, based shop Urban Motor wanted to add a touch of dry humor. But don’t be misled, there was a lot of work involved in making this Jawa’s two-stroke machine look like a racer.

A handmade new chassis from steel tubing, a minimalist very unique bodywork by Marvin Diehl of KRT Framework, a one-off front end with integrated handlebars, a pair of over skinny 23” alloy SM Pro wheels with rear drum brake, ultra short smoothly bended exhaust pipes, custom rear sets. an exposed throottle assembly, leather covered grips, etc. And yes, a painter worked on it, adding just a touch of gold on the front end and swingarm. Smile and go slowly…Urban Motor.

Daytona Chamber Of Commerce Names Nathew Hintz Official Artist Of Bike Week

An original painting by the Milwaukee-based gas-and-oil artist Mathew Hintz has been selected as the key image on the Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce 2017 Bike Week Poster. The Daytona Chamber has also named Hintz the Official Artist of Daytona Bike Week.

This is the third consecutive year a work by Mathew Hintz has been featured on the official Daytona Bike Week commemorative poster. Created in his distinctive layered-paint style, the painting depicts a classic motorcycle fuel tank with a Florida palm tree reflected in the chrome gas cap.

Copies of the poster are free and available while supplies last at the Daytona Bike Week Welcome Center on Beach Street, and at select area businesses.

A graduate of the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, Hintz has worked professionally for more than 20 years to develop an impressionistic painting style that’s as singular as a thumbprint and celebrates the form and craftsmanship of motorcycles and automobiles. An Electric Indian Motorcycle To Be Launched In Four To Five Years

Polaris Industriesis working on an electric motorcycle model planned to be released in 4 to 5 years under the Indian brand name.

It’s the second time the company works on an electric 2-wheeler, the first one being the Victory Empulse built using the Brammo electric vehicle technology. Brammo has previously used electric motorcycle racing to both accelerate product development and to showcase its EV technology.

But until now, limited riding range, size of battery modules and production cost have slowed the manufacturing and marketing of electric motorcycles. The company’s new electric Indian is expected to cover 120 to 140 miles on a single charge if driven aggressively, compared with 75 miles for the current Empulse bike.

“The characteristics of the new powertrain are going to be more applicable to be able to ride a bike for pleasure and in twisties, and kind of how you would use today a pleasure bikes” says Polaris President Of Motorcycles Steve Menneto. Harley-Davidson electric LiveWire model tested and presented in limited edition in 2014 is rumored to be mass produced and launched in 2020 or sooner. Expect a race between the 2 big American manufacturers to be the 1st one to succeed in the potentially big market EV category.
