Do You Know Your Motorcycle Mileage?

Miles per gallon? Maybe you know if you have a factory bike but only if your brand discloses it.  As surprising as it can be, unlike cars, federal laws don’t require motorcycle manufacturers to perform fuel-economy tests or, if they do, to reveal their numbers! Why? The reason given by government representatives is that bikes make up a small percentage of overall vehicles and are already considered fuel efficient and offering great mileage. Result? There is not an industry wide protocol for motorcycle MPG testing. So, from where come from the fuel economy figures that a limited number of manufacturers publish (Harley-Davidson since 1982 and recently Yamaha & Suzuki?). From EPA emissions tests that manufacturers are already required to perform to sell bikes in the United States. How? By measuring a vehicle’s tailpipe emissions under urban driving conditions. The test is run on a chassis dynamometer and it involves a series of accelerations, decelerations, idling, cold starts and hot starts and running at 21 mph a distance of 11 miles at a temperature of 75 degrees. IMHO, nothing to represent real-world riding conditions! So, if you don’t know for sure your MPG, you have the choice between to answer 50 miles per gallon (the answer that you are supposed to make when you have no clue) or like me,  to answer that you don’t really care because you ride for pleasure. (even at close to $4.00 per gallon!).

A Few Thoughts About The State Of The Custom Motorcycle Industry

There are few consumer purchases more discretionary than a Harley-Davidson and of course than a full-blown custom motorcycle built from the ground up. Harley US retail sales have hit the skids and fell 14%. So, can I say that sales of motorcycles or the lack of it is a good barometer of our economy. Yes, I think so. Logically the professional topic of conversation on which I am the most questioned is “Cyril, when do you think it will get better?”. And my answer is always the same and can be summarized in 2 sentences. 1- “You will know that the economy gets better when it’s no more the main topic of conversation during TV news”. 2- “Right now, the best in the business, for bikes and parts, are doing very fine”. Let me tell you something. We spent the last 10 years bitching about the non-professionals who entered the custom motorcycle industry only because it was cool and supposedly the new El Dorado. Almost all these opportunists of the 11th hour are already gone. Give us a little bit more time and you, the consumer, will no more have to choose, unknowingly, between a bad and a good part, between a dealer who cares only about taking your money versus a dealer who wants to deserve you as a repeat client, between a builder who cares only about his ego and one who cares also about your life when you ride his “masterpiece”. So, am I happy about our industry slowdown? Of course not. But I can tell you something that makes me happy when I am with my peers in professional events. Now, most people I meet there were with me more than 10 years ago. And I can make an easy prediction. Whatever the state of the economy, in 10 years they will still be there. The custom motorcycle industry is a little bit smaller than what people thought. So what? Whatever our field, all what we do is about love and passion. We don’t need the others who did it only for the money. So, if you have a project in mind and have the money to accomplish it, don’t postpone. It’s never been a better time for you. Start a new project now.

New S&S Engine/Horse Magazine Chopper Show.

Up to 200 bikes will compete in this new bike show on June 28 in the middle o the S&S 50th Anniversary Celebration held at the Oktoberfest Grounds in La Crosse, Wisconsin June 27-29.  The show will be held at the La Crosse Speedway and unusually, but logically in this case, there will be no classes because it will be onlychopper against chopper. The top prize being the winner’s choice of a Flathead Power by S&S SH-Series or P-Series engine, and of course a feature in The Horse Magazine.  There will be additional runner up prizes, along with a full day of excitement and great bikes to look at. Artistry In Iron Master Builders Championship

 One of the highlights of Las Vegas Bike Fest (October 2-5th), is a bike show called “Artistry In Iron”. This show is not like the other shows you know because it’s one of the very few competitions in the world where 25 “Master Builders” are selected and invited to show only one custom bike, then vote for each other (except their bike, of course) with only one winner. It’s indoor, creates a big crowd traffic, and let you mingle with the builders who accept to spend 4 hours near their bike every day for autographs and picture opportunities. This year, the show is sponsored by Maverick Publishing (sisters publications American Cycle and American Bagger Magazine) and maybe it’s a sign that ultra-custom dressers are going to be the new stars of the show. Although invited, I will not make it this year (price of gas for a round trip of 4455 miles?!?) but if you are in Las Vegas at these dates, don’t miss this 3-day show/exhibition. Artistry In Iron.

Like all Custom Builders (and Bloggers), I receive a ton of emails from all over the world. Some are quite long and unusual like this one from Kenya that I received this morning and that I publish as is.

"Dear Cyril Huze. I couldn’t let the opportunity pass without sending you this e-mail. You see I’ve been a life long fan of Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Don’t get me wrong I couldn’t tell you the difference between a Bobber or any other Harley-Davidson motorcycle. What I like about them couldn’t actually be quantified until I came across your site. I mean to me what you produce is so much of an amalgam of this feeling and the true expression of it. Without being too forward I figure you were the kid who bought all the books, sneaked to all the conventions and meets that you weren’t supposed to because I also figure that at that time there were maybe only a few "types of Harley-Davidson motorcycles". I hope I’m not being cheeky but at some point you probably had an epiphany that led you to the creations that you feature on your site. This of course begs the question why would I be so effusive about a subject such as motorcycle customization. Well it’s simple, at some point you came to direct and chanel your energy toward this direction after what seems like a lifetime of devotion to the process, I can honestly and sincerely comment that you definitely achieved what you set out to the evidence is in the work. At the risk of sounding like I’m marking your work, what I hope to convey is that, there was a time I dreamt of owning and riding my own motorcycle and obviously it was a custom version. At that time it would probably would have been wrong for me to try and get to the point where I’d buy a motorcycle that was customized but that wasn’t representative of the ambitions I’d have for motorcycles design. I can honestly say that even though it seems you’ve been in the business since I was thinking of my first custom, you seem to be in it for the long haul and indeed should I fall into the same dream sequence and event nuture the ambition to have my very first, I’ll certainly look for yours because instead of fading I’ve every confidence you’ll be the one still making customs when they find that "Customs make you Sterile".
Again I don’t know what you do entails and I dare say to make something look as remarkable and worthy as your creations do a lot of hard work, sweat, tears and probably the not too infrequent drop of blood goes in and comes out of it. I hope that you indeed keep up the good work if for nothing else than it’s my fervent belief that you are indeed on the cusp of even greater discoveries about the directions you hope to head in as far as design is concerned and you’ll possibly add No.13 to your philosophy statements as soon as this happen. I’ve been reading some Khalil Gibrain and the parallels are remarkable. Like my old headmaster used to say "you only get out of life what you put into it" I shall be bold enough to add with your work it certainly shows. There is a band that I like very much called “The Black Eyed Peas”. I you don’t know yet (how come?) listen to “where Is The Love”, “Don’t Phunk with My Heart”, “Shut Up”, etc.  The front man and producer behind the multi-platinum group is Will.I.Am (you saw his “Yes I Can” video to support Barack Obama over and over on your preferred news network) . Turn Signals Relocator For Baggers And Bobbers

This Thursday April 10, I am flying to Charlotte then will be picked up at the airport and travel 30 minutes away to Kings Mountain, the home of the new Indian Motorcycle Company. There, I will meet with Chairman Stephen Julius and all his team, listen to their business plans, product information, visit their facility and discover their new model(s). It’s always exciting to see a motorcycle company preparing the launch of a new product from engineering, to parts purchasing, to marketing, to customer service to dealer development to manufacturing. Britttown. A Cool Motorcycle Documentary About Old Triumphs And BSA’s

Last week, I already posted about Brittown, the new documentary of Zack Coffman and Scott Di Lalla. I just watched the DVD they sent me, and it made me want to acquire both a 1971 Triumph, a Norton and a BSA. An homage to a man nicknamed "Meatball" with a passion for restoring old bikes and racing them. Harley-Davidson CEO Got Paid $4.1M For 2007

The chief executive officer of Harley-Davidson Inc. received compensation last year that the motorcycle maker valued at almost $4.1 million, a drop of nearly 4 percent from the previous year, according to a regulatory filing last Tuesday. James L. Ziemer, 58, who has been president and CEO since 2005, received no money under a non equity incentive plan. In 2006, he received $989,461 under that plan. The company said in the filing that no executives received bonuses because they did not meet performance incentive targets. The company’s profit fell about 10 percent in 2007.  Ziemer has called the retail environment "challenging" for this year. The company expects moderate growth in both earnings per share and revenue, however. Analysts expected slightly lower revenue and higher earnings in 2008. The company is due to announce first quarter earnings on April 17.  Harley-Davidson.

Chris Callen, editor of Cycle Source Magazine sent me this beautiful quoted text to share with you. It’s the weekend. Get a cold one and take the time to read attentively what he has to say. Who among Us will lead? .

“This post may not seem like it has much to do with motorcycling but stick with me for a minute. I have long believed that motorcycle people have always been on the side of freedom in its truest sense. That we bikers, have counted ourselves among the ranks for freedom fighters since the beginning of motorcycling. It is based on this premise that I offer the following small rant. Usually I find very little interest in television. I try hard to limit the time I spend in front of the idiot box and instead spend my days involved in more productive activities, most times which involve motorcycling.

Don’t get me wrong, the eighteen hour days I spend in my office chair around deadline find the noise of a television in the background but that’s usually the doing of my girl and her need for regular doses of reality. Hmmmm. Recently I heard interesting ideas coming out of the box, enough of them broke through that I began to pay attention. The program featured was “John Adams” a new mini series on HBO. This is the story of how our country was founded and like most programs I do end up watching, It offers the prospect of obtaining knowledge, not just the typical slobber inducing opiates fed to the masses through 185 digital channels.

In the story of the 30 years John Adams gave to the independence of our original colonies, many of those years spent alone in foreign lands, you get to look at what it was like for a man to make sacrifices for things he believed in. Adams gave up his family life, his home land, most of his youth and was under the constant scrutiny of the general public in whatever country hosted him while he rallied for support of separation for the colonies from England. It also provides a look at the ingredients formulated in the making of our great country. Having watched the first four of seven installments of this program I have come to a few summations. There is probably no person alive in this country that appreciates freedom the way these great men did. Except for any of our soldiers that have fought for freedom.

I am personally ashamed of the way we have let the foundation of our government crumble beneath the guise of free trade and an open market. We all need to pay closer attention to our elected officials. Now this is not a rant aimed at bolstering support towards one party over another, this is a simple statement of fact: Our government was set up to protect the interests of the people it governs. I came to this and was especially touched when John Adams and John Hancock began to work on the Declaration of independence. It may have been a while sine you read this great document so I am posting it here with this simple request. Think about what these men were making themselves independent from. that in doing so they were risking their lives, the lives of their families and estrangement from the life line provided by England to the 13 colonies. Think about what this document should mean to us today and remember it in all you do from now till November.

Quote: "When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments. Ridley New Automatic Auto-Glide Trike

The first Auto-Glide model was introduced by Ridley in 2002. It evolved into a family of models with 3 common factors; low seat height, light weight, and an automatic transmission. New for 2008 Ridley brings to its riders the very first Ridley automatic with three wheels. It’s quite stylish and functional. The design of the trike is extended from the Auto-Glide Classic with its 4.2 gallon stretched tank, full fenders, Ridley 750 v-twin engine and fully automatic transmission. Meet With The Next Master Builders Of Motorcycles

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Last weekend was the Donnie Smith Bike Show in St-Paul, Minnesota. A great show by itself, but during this event there was another competition called the Chopper Class Challenge: high school students from 6 different schools were competing with custom bikes that they designed, fabricated and built during their school year. Isn’t it cool? The program was created in 2004 after Scottie Ard (Program Coordinator for the Donnie Smith Bike Show) visited Kennedy High School to see an innovative program created by Instructor Kevin Baas  which taught students to build custom motorcycles. Ard brought Master Builder Donnie Smith and American Thunder Promotions owner Neil Ryan to visit the program and the rest is history. Judging was done by experts, and you can imagine the joy of these teen-agers, not only to compete, but also to meet with Master Builders like Donnie Smith, Dave Perewitz and Brian Klock, who have been instrumental in the growth of the DSCCC. John Kosmoski of House of Kolor and Kenny Price from Samson Motorcycle Products also met with the young builders and shared the history of the custom motorcycle industry. Lead by their teacher and mentor Kevin Baas, this year the kids from Kennedy High School Class brought 4 bikes to the show and all of them won first place. They presented a 1942 WLA Army bike restoration, a 1957 Panhead Rat bike, a 1947 Knucklehead, and a 2008 Kennedy custom built bike featuring a Sucker Punch Frame, Pearson Springer and S&S shovel motor.  We must all be very proud, like parents, of all the students who competed for their hard work and dedication. Now, I suggest that all show organizers invite them to compete in their shows. They need the encouragement not only of their older peers but also from the public at large. Spy Picture Of An S&S 50th Anniversary Custom Bike Project

On June 26-29, 2008 motorcycle industry history will be made as 50 custom bike builders in the world come together in La Crosse Wisconsin, to support the S&S 50th Anniversary celebration. They will compete in a bike show and judging will be done by the builders themselves, key media members, S&S personnel, show attendees and internet voters.  I just got the CAD drawings of one of the bikes currently being built. It will be presented by Bertrand Dubet from Odyssey Motorcycles in association with the Italian company OMP, a well known line of custom accessories, in charge of the 3D machining of all the one-off aluminum parts of this project. Cool. Can’t wait to inspect this one.

Hope that last evening you watched the TV show Pinks on Speed. Adam Chandler from Chandler Originals racing Mike Beland from A1 Cycles. Mike won the bragging rights…and Adam’s bike. But what matters is that they had a great time shooting the show, that they proved that custom builders can race hard their custom bikes and that they gave a good TV show for the spectators. Last night we were about 80 people gathered front of the big TV screens of a West Palm Beach restaurant to support the 2 racers, When the show ended, we wondered. What do you think about the show, the performance, the 2 racers? So, if you watched, leave a comment. Do you want to see again custom builders race their bikes? Which builders you would like to see? Who against who? etc. They all read this Blog, so tell us. Maybe the Pinks producers will want to do more shows with motorcycle builders. On The Scene First Pictures Of “Open Mind”

They are not of professional quality, but these first pictures taken during the AMD European Championship in Germany give you an idea of what this bike is all about. Built by Thunderbike Germany. Almost everything is one-off. But I notice (my original pics are much bigger) 2 American parts: a "Rapid" Headlight and Taillight from Crime Scene Choppers.
