Retro Side Mount Taillight

Not only you need a strong taillight to show that you are braking, but maybe you also need to say it.  “Stop” is engraved all over the glass of this taillight inspired by the Model A Ford. It features a stainless steel housing, a chrome frame with a powdercoated backing plate (I don’t know why?). Measures 7” (H) x 4.25” (W). It will set you back $ 239.95 but safety has no price. Vertical side mounts are not legal in all states. Do you care? From New-York City Choppers

Help. Peter Fonda Needs Money

When Peter Fonda needs money, he brings some memorabilia to the auction block. For example, his American Flag Patch from His "Easy Rider" Jacket or his gold Rolex worn in the same movie. A surprise mega-hit during its 1969 theatrical run, Easy Rider is one of those rare movies that changed the way motion pictures are made and also defined a new generation. The original, one-and-only American flag patch worn on the back of Fonda’s (Wyatt in the movie) motorcycle jacket, is featured prominently throughout the movie and also its classic poster. Peter kept the jacket after production wrapped, and wore it until it wore out. He saved the patch, however, framed it, and has held onto it for almost 40 years. This truly unique item from an American classic that continues to inspire was sold for $33,460. Also auctioned was Peter Fonda’s Prototype Gold Rolex. While sitting on a beach in France and watching the tide come in shortly after filming his scenes for the anthology movie Spirits of the Dead (1968), Peter Fonda experienced a burst of creativity that resulted in the first draft Easy Rider being put on paper in less than 3 hours. It was his first screenplay, and Peter rewarded himself by purchasing this 18k gold prototype Rolex GMT Master watch with date feature. The watch is very briefly visible in the early, pre-credit scenes of the movie. There was no way Peter was going to risk damaging the watch. So a different one was used for the scene where his character tosses it away. At auction time, it sold for $33,460. If Peter needs more money, he can contact me. I will announce his memorablia for sale first here in my Blog.

Harley-Davidson 3Q Profit Falls 15.3 Pct

Domestic buyers are seeing oil prices rising and the home market crumbling, so they’re being cautious about spending, even when it comes to the iconic brand’s bikes. A continued sluggish U.S. market for motorcycles pushed Harley-Davidson Inc.’s third-quarter profit down 15.3 percent, and the motorcycle maker said it expects next year to be difficult, too. Domestically, sales were down 2.5 percent in the three months ended Sept. 30, while the overall U.S. heavyweight market fell 4.4 percent. Overseas, Harley’s sales were up 8.8 percent. Worldwide retail sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles were flat in the quarter, down 0.2 percent. Revenue dropped 5.8 percent to $1.54 billion from $1.64 billion last year. The company had figured sales would be difficult, so they cut bike shipments and earnings expectations in September. The company expects international sales to continue outpacing domestic ones, as they’ve been doing for the past three years. International bike shipments account for nearly 27 percent of shipments so far this year, compared with 22.5 percent last year

The Next Great American Motorcycle Builder Is….

A new TV show about custom motorcycles? Yes, but this one will only feature amateur motorcycle builders. The Next Great American Builder is a new “take no prisoners” television program from the creator of MTV’s Fast, Inc. They are looking for amateur builders interested in coming to the show to compete for a cash prize. I you think you have what it takes, then you must fill out an online application. But before dreaming make sure that you meet all of the following qualifications: Applicant must fall under the definition of “amateur” builder. If applicant or his/her activities in the world of custom motorcycle building have ever competed in other professional events or television series where their work has been featured, then the application will be denied. I. If application is accepted, applicants will be required, at their own cost, to travel to Los Angeles to participate in a 3 day interview and selection process. This process will be filmed and included in the series. Builders will be competing for 13 spots on the show and participation in the selection process does not guarantee involvement beyond this stage. Also, applicants must be US citizens. J&P Cycles Daytona Store grand Opening

The success story of John Parham (and of hs lovely wife Jill) is one that one day I will tell you in this Blog. In a continued sluggish motorcycle market it is very uplifting to see J&P Cycles continue to expand and remain, by far, the world’s largest catalog retailer for after-market parts and accessories. And if it was enough, John Parham just opened a new 35,000 sq.ft facility (store, showroom & warehouse) on the land of Bruce Rossmeyer at Destination Harley in Ormond Beach, FL. In the store you can find tens of thousand parts to satisfy the needs of all American, metric and sport bikes riders, and above the store there is also another 12,000 sq. ft. office and techical area that is digitally connected to the headquarter in Anamosa, Iowa. The new facility employs 50 full time employees including a dozen full time mechanics. For the opening last Wednesday John offered a big party including friends, medias & chamber of commerce representatives. And I can tell you that we were all extremely impressed by this huge store conceived to fill all motorcycle needs. J&P Cycles.

40th Anniversary Corbin Party

No better way to start a rally than by going to a big party with your friends of the custom motorcycle scene.  Mike Corbin has always offered the motorcycle industry some of the best parties you can imagine. And you can translate by very good food (even my favorite sushis), champagne, margaritas and of course gorgeous women. And it was even better yesterday evening at the gorgeous Corbin store on US 1 in Ormond Beach because Mike was celebrating his 40th anniversary in the industry. Wow! Of course, all the motorcycle elite present in Daytona was there. From seats to bags to fairings (for 17 motorcycle brands + ATV) to furniture Corbin is since a very long time the supreme leader in its industry. The American Craftsman lives on. Congrats & respect, Mike. Corbin Website.

Biketoberfest 2007. Stopping By Disney Harley.

It is Biketoberfest downtown. It’s Destination Harley in Ormond Beach. The place, where, in addition of visiting again & again the largest Harley-Davidson dealer in the world (make me think of a department store), you can also meet with the major vendors and builders of the industry. Of course, I don’t go to buy. I go to shake hands and have a few laughs with my colleagues and friends of the custom motorcycle scene. How things have changed since last time I was there? More buildings, more shops, a theater for concerts…and a much more practical parking with less dust. Is it a small city? Not yet, but very soon. With his dozen or so dealerships nobody can deny that Bruce Rossmeyer has achieved in a few years some astounding accomplishments in the motorcycle industry. When he told us 4 years ago that his new place would become the center of Bike Week & Biketoberfest some of us were a little bit skeptical. No more. There is no way you can say you went to a Daytona rally without having spent time in Rossmeyer’s territory. Oh, by the way. I just walked by the beautiful Corbin store and at 7PM we have a big party organized by Mike to celebrate his company 40th anniversary. Will tell you tomorrow. Bruce Rossmeyer’s Harley-Davidson.

Breaking News. California Dealers can Sell and Install Aftermarket Parts on New Bikes

Just received from DealerNews this very important info for Califormians…

California dealerships will be able to sell and install approved aftermarket parts on new motorcycles at the time of purchase, before the bikes are delivered to customers, starting Jan. 1. The new law signed in early October by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger changes existing anti-tampering rules ordering that bikes must be sold in factory condition at the time of original purchase. Before the new law, for a motorcycle dealer to install aftermarket parts or performance parts on a new motorcycle, the customer had to first buy the bike, take it out of the dealership and then return to have the products installed. This precluded the buyer from financing the cost of the parts with the new motorcycle. Backed by the California Motorcycle Dealer Association and sponsored by assemblymen Mike Duvall (R-Yorba Linda), the law is expected to take the weight off many motorcycle dealers who feared fines from the state’s emission’s control agency.
"This is a tremendous win for California motorcycle and motorsports dealers. They can now fill their buyers’ demands for customization and more performance when they buy a new motorcycle without fearing that they could be fined for selling and installing legal parts," says John Paliwoda, the CMDA’s executive director. Over the past couple of years, the California Air Resources Board has stepped up enforcement of the state’s anti-tampering laws and collected millions of dollars in fines against dealers, distributors and manufacturers. In January 2006, CARB sent out an advisor warning dealers that it was illegal to advertise, offer for sale, sell or install parts that hadn’t received an executive order from the agency. The advisory also prohibited the sale and installation, on new motorcycles, of legal aftermarket parts that had already received CARB’s approval. After Jan. 1, dealers will be able to factor in the price of aftermarket P&A into the overall financing cost of a new motorcycle, and install the items before the bike is delivered. The law also covers OE parts and accessories. "CARB needs to promote, not discourage, legal motorcycle parts sales and installation," says Paliwoda.

15th Annual Rat’s Hole Biketoberest Show Is October 20

What’s new, what’s cool, what’s weird will be once again on display during the 15th annual Biketoberfest Rat’s Hole Show this Saturday October 20. If you are a show participant you already know that you are going to line up starting at 7 AM. If you are a spectator, arrive soon (I recommend at 10.30 AM) because it takes almost the full day to check out all these intricate machines. Since the show returned to the beautiful Daytona Lagoon setting (entrance at 601 Earl Street, north side of the Ocean Center) the crowd gets thicker & thicker but bikes have more room making things easier for you to shoot pictures. So, don’t forget your camera. I will stop by, so come to me to say hello. Rat’s Hole Show.

A Chopper To Raise Money For MDA

This chopper was built in memory of Mattie Stepanek, the child poet whose messages of peace & hope was spread around the world through his prime time TV appearances on Larry king, Oprah and several poetry books. The bike, signed by celebrities, will be auctioned with the proceeds going to the Mattie Fund. The funds will help MDA continue seeking additional treatments & cures for childhood neuromuscular diseases. This chopper will be featured in the January issue of Easyriders Magazine (in newsstand beginning of december), and of course can be seen on my Website at the page “Custom Bikes”.

Ace Grip Control System

All your switches can be right under your fingers..Grip Ace™ is a revolutionary new patented motorcycle grip switching system with electronic module. The Grip Ace™ allows the rider to clean up the handle bars and maintain positive control of their motorcycle, while activating turn signals, headlights, starter and accessories. Works on all types of motorcycles; Customs, Sport, Cruiser, Enduro , Scooter, ATV , Jet ski and Snowmobiles. Grip Ace™ works with the stock equipment, no wires need to be cut or switches removed on stock bikes. All stock switches still function. All your custom builds switches are now in the grip. The rider pre-programs the desired turn signal duration of time to cancel in 10-second intervals. If bike is placed in neutral or brake light is activated, before or during turn signals, the turn signals will flash continuously until the bike is placed in gear or brakes are released, then the turn signals will self cancel in half the pre-programmed time. The company also offers custom programs to enhance the features of the Grip Ace™ to work with stock self canceling turn signal modules. GripAce

Brittown. A New British Motorcycle Documentary

You are now familiar with Scott Di Lala & Zach Coffman, the duo I introduced to you when they directed and produced the acclaimed documentary called Choppertown. They just shot a new film called Brittown featuring vintage Triumph & BSA motorcycles (oh, yeah) and master English bikes racer and master mechanic Jeff "Meatball" Tulinius from the shop Hell On Wheels in Anaheim, California. You will not be able to see the movie until Christmas because still in the editing phase, but Scott & Zach offer you a teaser for another (british) look inside our bike culture. Good rock music by Julius band called Smiling Face Down. To see the teaser movie, go to Brittown.

Puerto Rico Passes The Strictest Motorcyclist Laws

From Rogue, our ‘Freedom Fighter’, this A.M.A. information regarding motorcycling in the US territory of Puerto Rico. “A measure recently signed into law by the governor of Puerto Rico will require riders to wear not only a helmet, but also gloves, boots, and long pants. After dark, riders must wear a reflective vest, and the law also tightens age restrictions on riders and imposes new testing requirements. In some ways, the law is even more restrictive than the requirements on many U.S. military bases. Legislative sponsors said the law was a response to increasing numbers of motorcycle fatalities on the Caribbean island. Between 2000 and 2005, the number of motorcycles and scooters registered in Puerto Rico more than doubled. Several factors encourage motorcycle use, including the year-round riding weather and the congestion of nearly 4 million residents on a 3,500-square-mile island. In general, gasoline is slightly more expensive than in the 50 states, while average household incomes are lower than in any of the states. In that environment, sales of inexpensive Chinese-built scooters have boomed in recent years as more residents in the crowded San Juan metropolitan area turned to them for affordable and fun transportation, in addition to steady sales of full-size motorcycles. "This considerable increase in the purchase and use of motorcycles as an alternative means of transportation has brought with it an unprecedented increase in motorcycle accidents, and, at the same time, a dramatic increase in deaths from those accidents," the legislation states. The law takes effect in October. It calls for the creation of eight training centers around the island to license new riders and budgets $250,000 to start the program. But it’s not likely the centers will be running by the time the law takes effect. Owners of currently registered motorcycles are allowed to continue riding, but will have to comply with the new licensing requirements when they renew their driver’s licenses" The law essentially moves Puerto Rico from having less stringent regulations than most states to having more restrictive requirements than any of the 50 states. Previously, motorcyclists in Puerto Rico were not required to pass a riding test and get a motorcycle endorsement unless they wanted to use the island’s toll highways. UPDATE: Shortly after Puerto Rico’s tough new restrictions on motorcyclists were due to take effect, the Legislature voted to postpone implementation of the new law until February 2008. Translation: they are ready to hear our complaints.

Killer Style Pedals

I fell in love with these classic Primo BMX pedals that I see very well on a next project. They are specially constructed to still allow platform rotation. Excellent support to replace your tiny pegs and very cool as a kicker pedal. Adaptors are6061 aluminum with 3/8" or 1/2" straight bolt-on or a fold up version. Many styles and colors are available from Baxter Motorcycle.

Harley-Davidson Design Team

Harley’s product development center is located in a steel-and-glass building tucked behind the company’s manufacturing plant in Wauwatosa. Company executives review designs and prototypes in a large conference room called "the bunker" The bunker’s tall glass windows have motorized shades to keep prying eyes from getting even a glimpse of bikes that might not be released to the public for years,. As you know, Willie G is the styling guru and is assisted by styling director Louie Netz (if you participate to any official Harley Bike Show, he is the one who is there to decide the winners). Above the bunker, there’s an 11,000-square-foot-design studio and model shop where artists work with drawing boards, clay, wood and plastic to breathe the initial life into a motorcycle design. The studio has a motorcycles only elevator. From a raw concept to a finished product, a Harley design might go through dozens of changes. Harley has 10 stylists responsible for ushering designs from the drawing board to final production. It’s a lengthy, arduous process involving engineers, cost accountants and manufacturing specialists. The designers have now a very specific objective: to bridge the generation gap between baby boomers, who turned the Harley brand into an icon, and younger riders who may have no brand loyalty at all. Designing a new model can take from 5 to 10 years (V-Rod). Harley is now beginning to work on the 2012 models. Makes me think how good we are all at building custom/concept motorcycles in a time frame of 6 to 12 months. True, we don’t have the cost constraints of mass producing. But, since we are establishing the new trends, why Harley doesn’t hire a few of us as consultants?

Tribal Logo Shirt

Nobody needs one more shirt. Right? But maybe you will want this one because it’s mine, and it’s printed with my cool tribal logo in the back and a small version of it above the left front pocket. At work or at play, this short sleeves shirt with 2 front pockets is very comfortable to wear. In addition it will make me happy to see you wearing it during the next rally. Tribal Logo Shirt.

Motorcycle Accidents. Sport Bikes Versus Cruisers

Sport bikes have the highest death rates among all types of motorcycles, according to the Highway Loss Data Institute. Drivers of these high-performance racing motorcycles are being killed nearly four times as often as people who drive standard models, a new insurance study shows. Motorcycle deaths in general have skyrocketed from 2,116 in 1997 to 4,810 in 2006, and now account for 11 percent of all traffic fatalities, U.S. Transportation Department figures show. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety blames the popular super sport motorcycles in part for the dramatic increase. Sport bikes made up less than 10 percent of registered motorcycles in 2005 but accounted for over 25 percent of rider deaths. Super sport bikes are built on racing platforms but modified for the highway and sold to consumers. They are very lightweight and have powerful engines. For example, a 2006 model Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R produces 111 horsepower and weighs 404 pounds. In contrast, the 2006 model Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic Electra Glide produces 65 horsepower and weighs 788 pounds. We know that a lot of the people who get into sport bikes are adrenaline junkies with a daredevil mentality. They’re not out to take a cruise to enjoy the countryside. They want to get a rush by pushing it to the limit.

This commitment from builders all over the world is truly a testament to the impact S&S has made on the custom motorcycle industry

Bad To The Bones Arlen Ness Wheels

Like a conventional wire spoke wheel these new billet spoke wheels consist of a rim, center hub and spokes but that¹s where the similarities end. Every component is machined from 6061-T6 billet aluminum and bolt together similarly to an automotive 3-piece wheel. In order to put up with the abuse many riders place on their motorcycles, Arlen Ness has utilized hardened steel bushings in every bolt hole. These bushings are capable of withstanding shear loads up to 6,000 lbs., help with assembly and isolate each individual bolt from the severe shear loads experienced during braking and acceleration. Assembly is finished with chrome 12 point bolts, chrome flange nuts and hardened stainless steel washers. Available in either a straight spoke or a cross spoke in chrome or contrasting chrome and black anodizing. Arlen Ness

Inside a 4-Stroke Engine

Sara Liberte sent me an email to direct my attention to an interesting video showing how a 4 stroke engine works. In this film you get a very slow motion inside look. The plug is firing about roughly 250 times per minute at idle speed. So imagine at 1,000 rpms, then at  7,000 rpm. As Sara wrote to me, timing is everything. To start video click on arrow in controls at bottom of screen..
