Jared Meeds Of Indian Motorcycle Racing Wins 2018 American Flat Track Season Opener in Daytona

Indian Motorcycle Racing and reigning 2017 American Flat Track Champion Jared Mees, aboard his Scout FTR750, repeat with another win at the Daytona TT. Along with Mees, a total of five Indian Scout FTR750 riders finished inside the top 10, including Brad Baker, Kenny Coolbeth Jr., Bryan Smith and Rob Pearson.

Winning both his heat race and semi-final event, Mees began the main event from the second starting position. He was one of several riders pushing at the front of the pack in the first few laps and made passes to get into second. In a move that reminded race fans of why he’s earned the nickname “Jammer,” Mees made a bold move at the jump, taking an aggressive inside line with his Scout FTR750, actually making contact with Baker to literally wrestle away the lead – a lead he would never relinquish. Totally Updated S&S 4” Big Bore Kit Ready For Market

This new S&S 4” Big Bore Kit is announced as better than ever. The S&S’s 100”/110” big bore kit has just undergone a total redesign with new materials. Their engineers went back to the drawing board on this one and created a unique formula of ductile iron that decreases wear characteristics and allows them to increase contact between liner and fins for better heat transfer” states S&S VP of engineering Peter Winnie.

Inspired by their Pro Stock Drag Race engines, the updated big bore kit utilizes a Ductile Cast Iron liner wrapped in cast aluminum for optimum thermal conductivity and performance. 1999-2006 Twin Cam 88® engines roll up to 100ci, and 2007-17 Dyna/Softail and 2007-16 Touring become 110ci monsters!

No machining necessary and install can be done with engine still in the bike. Kit works well with stock cylinder heads, or let S&S CNC port those heads for even more power. At 10.5:1 compression it makes for a very “streetable” and dependable engine that also responds well to performance cams. Available only within the USA at this time. More info at S&S 4” Big Bore Kit .

Last Daytona Bike Week For Vendors On Beach Street. No More Vendors After Biketoberfest. Forever!

(Partially sourced Daytona Journal) Riverfront Park on the north end of Beach Street is going to return silent when the 77th Bike Week ends on Sunday March 18th and rill return definitively silent after the upcoming Biketoberfest. Daytona City commissioners on January 3r voted to terminate a contract with Biker Threads LLC, the company that hosts itinerant vendors at the park during Bike Week and Biketoberfest events.

Vendors were permitted to set up shop for the current Bike Week and will be allowed back once more in the fall for Biketoberfest. In a December letter, Daytona Beach City Manager Jim Chisholm informed a company that runs the Bike Week events at the park that the city is terminating a contract about halfway through a five-year extension, saying it is “modifying elements of motorcycling events” in the city.

“The Biker Threads lease was terminated because the city wants to implement improvements detailed in the Riverfront Park Master Plan,” Daytona Beach spokeswoman Susan Cerbone wrote in a statement to The News-Journal. “The agreement necessitated a one-year notice clause for termination by either party. This year’s lease for Bike Week and Biketoberfest will be the final year.” Continue reading ‘Last Daytona Bike Week For Vendors On Beach Street. No More Vendors After Biketoberfest. Forever!’

At The End Of Bike Week, A legendary Daytona Shop Is Closing Down.

As I reported on February 28th, Carl Morrow. 80 yo and his wife Diane will retire at the end of Daytona Bike Week and close Carl Morrow Speed Shop, their well known Daytona tuning and repair bike shop on North Beach Street. Carl made a name for himself with land speed records on the Bonneville Salt Flats and for developing his performance Typhoon Velocity Stack Carburetor to install on a wide range of bikes from small size engines to monster strokers.

Countless frames magazine features are still hanging on the walls. Some of the legendary Land Speed Racers are still parked in the showroom. But when entering the showroom it is quite clear that this is no ordinary 77th Bike Week for Carl, Diane and Doug Morrow, the family behind 50 years of racing and tuning, contributing to Harley-Davidson history.

Carls Speed Shop has been a landmark, an anchor of every Bike Week. A lot of collectales and still very valuable parts are currently displayed for sale, including the stuffed Alligator from the Showroom!

The decision to sell was not made without doubts, but reports from the local Daytona News Journal confirmed that all property formely known as the “car mile” of the old pre-Rossmeyer days center of Bike Week activities have now been sold to an insurance company named Brown & Brown’s. This company, plans to build a 10-story headquarters tower. which will includes the waste area that has been abandoned for almost five years, and also the still existing neighboring shops. The offer of the company must have been convincing, because Carls Speed Shop will not only close but soon after the building will be wiped out from the map forever and replaced by a sterile mirror glass tower that will host 600 insurance employees.

So if you want to get some of the still available memorabilia, come to Carls Speed Shop as fast as possible. You may also  get parts, posters and signed t-shirts, And don’t forget to thank Carl, Diane and Doug for their 50 years of making custom bike and motorsport history. They deserve it. Harley-Davidson Upset By Potential US Tariffs On Imported Steel And Aluminum And Possible Retaliatory Measures From Other Nations

Harley-Davidson needed to make an official statement in reaction to the potential steel and aluminum tariffs proposed by President Trump. Michael Pflughoeft, one of Harley-Davidson spokesman made yesterday the following statement.

“Import tariffs on steel and aluminum will drive up costs for all products made with these raw materials, regardless of their origin. Additionally, a punitive, retaliatory tariff on Harley-Davidson motorcycles in any market would have a significant impact on our sales, our dealers, their suppliers and our customers in those markets.”

A tariff being a tax, one doesn’t have to be an economist to understand that the increased cost of materials is always passed to the consumer. Something that Jean-Claude Juncker, European Commission President, reminded POTUS while threatening retaliatory tariffs on a list of other major US major brands.

Harley-Davidson is already in a difficult situation with missed global sales objectives since 2008 and struggling to remain relevant in a more and more Millennial-driven market. With a retataliatory 25% tariff on imported Harleys to Europe (50% of global sales) Harley’s market would collapse on this continent. Polaris is not so concerned because 50% of its sales are made to Canada but this country, like Mexico, would be exempted of tariffs, so with no retaliation possible.

Indian Motorcycle, America’s first motorcycle company, and Jack Daniel’s, America’s first registered distillery, today introduced the Jack Daniel’s® Limited Edition Indian® Scout® Bobber. For the third straight year, the two iconic American brands have joined forces with Klock Werks Kustom Cycles of Mitchell, SD to celebrate their shared values with an ultra-premium, limited-edition motorcycle. This year, they looked to the Jack Daniel’s Fire Brigade and their impressive gold and black firetrucks for design inspiration.

Jack Daniel’s® is the only distillery in the world with its own fire brigade, which is staffed entirely by employee volunteers. The Jack Daniel’s Fire Brigade is an impressive showcase of the company’s commitment to quality and a remarkable symbol for the passion and dedication shared by Jack Daniel’s employees. The employees at Indian Motorcycle developed this bike as a tribute to the people who are committed to keeping their community’s safe, the state-certified firefighters of Jack Daniel’s, as well as firefighters and EMS professionals everywhere.

Unlike any other custom motorcycle competition, The Wrench will celebrate those who find their sense of identity, purpose and glory, spending painstaking hours wrenching on garage builds. Indian Motorcycle is in search for three non-professional builders who do not make a living building and customizing motorcycles, looking for everyday “wrenchers” who do it only for the passion, not the pay.

Indian will be accepting submissions from March 15-30, the top submissions will be showcased online for fan voting. Those selected will receive a 2018 Scout Bobber and $10,000 build budget from Indian Motorcycle. The finished builds will be unveiled in July, and again open for a fan vote to select the winner. The top vote-getter will be announced at Sturgis and receive a grand prize of $10,000. Contestants cannot make a living customizing motorcycles. Continue reading ‘The Wrench. New 5-3/4” LED V-Rod Headlight

The Harley-Davidson VRSC (V-Twin Racing Street Custom), or V-Rod, was a line of V-twin muscle bikes, produced from 2001 until 2017. These powerful non-glare lamps are 4 x’s brighter & whiter than halogen (3,600 lumens high, 2,400 lumens low) and reach down the road like a bolt of lightning. It also has and a wide light pattern to illuminate the shoulder. Made with energy efficient solid-state LEDs that withstand shock & vibration. It’s easy-to-install, plug and play!
