Flat-Track Racing is set to open ESPN’s X Games Austin this evening Thursday June 2. In its second year as an X Games medaled event, Harley-Davidson Flat-Track Racing will feature top motorcycle racers from around the world going head-to-head on the challenging Circuit of The Americas dirt half-mile.
Competitors will race for the first gold medal awarded at this year’s X Games Austin and for a key to a new Harley-Davidson® Street® 750 motorcycle. The race will air live Thursday, June 2, on ESPN and ABC at 9 pm (CST). At the unforgiving legendary El Mirage, home to Land Speed Racing for more than half a century, motorcycle history was written again on May 19 when Chris Rivas & S&S Cycle, racing in the 3000 APS-PBG Class, did a pass at the extraordinary speed of 228.264 mph.

Last weekend May 26-29 motorcycle madness in Germany was at Magic Bike Ruedesheim on the Rhine river. The German tourist destination out of Frankfurt has been a popular destination for decades, but nothing prepared the town for what was rolling into town for the 15th anniversary of the event that started as a local meet of Harley-Davidson enthusiasts living in the region. The rumor started about one month ago when an Italian newspaper published an article mentioning that Polaris was interested to become a majority shareholder in legendary Italian sport bike maker MV Agusta. MV Agusta’s President and CEO Giovanni Castiglioni has just confirmed the news to Cycle News while mentioning at the same time that no agreement has been reached and that no letter of intention has been signed by the parties. For now, Polaris is not commenting. Polaris owns 3 motorcycle brands, Victory, Indian and Brammo in the cruising, touring and electric markets.
Today, MV Augusta s producing sport and sport touring machines with great reputation, in markets where Polaris is not currently present. MV Agusta has been resurrected several times from financial difficulties, sometimes stopping production, being purchased by Cagiva in 1991, then again in difficulties being bought in 2004 by Malaysian car maker Proton who resold it to to GEVI SpA, an Italian . based financing company. Jan, Sue and Audrey haven’t seen each other since leaving school in a London suburb. They rediscover each other via friends, reunited and arrange to meet for lunch.

Jan explains that after leaving school and attending Oxford University she met and married Timothy, with whom she has a beautiful daughter. Timothy is a partner in one of London ‘s leading law firms. They live in a 4000 sq ft apartment on Park Lane and Susanna, the daughter, attends drama school. They have a second home in Portugal .

During big rallies, most journalists, reporters and photographers suffer from FOMO, otherwise known as “fear of missing out” the new custom bike that we know you want us to write about. And even when you find it, conditions may not be the ones you expect for a professional shoot. It may be that bike is stuck in a bike show without possibility to move it, or because of inclement weather, or because your photographer is chasing other interesting custom bikes in another location, or committed to a professional event, etc. And when the bike hometown is in a foreign country, there are very few chances it will come back in your shooting range.
A few years ago, I have seen in person the Panhead chopper featured here, one of the winners in the AMD Championship Of Custom Building. Then it disappeared from my field or view and resurfaced at the Art And Wheels event in Switzerland I was reporting about 10 days ago. “Cloud 9” is a classic style chopper that I still consider one of the best, if not the best one recently built because delving deep into the rich, illustrious heritage of the 70’s, and instead of only trying to imitate the past, offering a perfected simplicity and craftsmanship. Maryland Becomes Second State to Pass Motorcyclist Anti-Profiling Law.The motorcyclists of Maryland counted a major victory last week when Governor Larry Hogan signed a bill into law that would expressly prohibit the profiling of motorcyclists within the state. Maryland is now the second state to pass a motorcycle anti-profiling law. Washington state passed related legislation in 2011. Similar activities and advocacy efforts are underway in several other states across the U.S. At the signing ceremony were members of ABATE of Maryland, the Maryland Confederation of Clubs, and Motorcycle Riders Foundation. The teamwork, cooperation and hard work by these organizations ensured swift passage of the measure.

Located in the Mojave Desert, El Mirage dry lakebed has attracted speed enthusiasts for more than 60 years. At its best, the 1.3-mile-long hard and smooth track serves as a unique venue for testing a machine’s maximum velocity. At its worst, under spectacular summer thunderstorms, it becomes an impassible quagmire of clay and silt.
In “A Passion For Speed”, you can follow the Indian Motorcycle team – Calibration Engineer Wayne Kolden, Senior Development Technician Chet Michaelson, Development Technician Dan Gervais and Powertrain Development Technician Neil Sikora – as they build a Scout and Chief Dark Horse specifically for dry lakebed duty, recall where their passion for fast machines came from, work together to overcome setbacks, and then travel 1,800 miles to realize their dream. Indian Motorcycle®, America’s first motorcycle company, is proud to announce its partnership with the Sisters’ Centennial Motorcycle Ride, a cross-country group ride that celebrates the 100th anniversary of Augusta and Adeline Van Buren’s courageous and unprecedented motorcycle journey across the United States.
In 1916 the Van Buren Sisters were the first women to traverse the continental U.S., each on her own motorcycle. Their mission was to show the U.S. Army that women could serve as motorcycle messengers, and to throw light on the women’s suffrage movement of the time. Their ride was heavily reported and included riding to the summit of Pikes Peak, quite a feat on the unpaved road with their 1915 Indian “Motocycles” (as they were known at the time). The Sisters were inducted into the American Motorcyclists Association Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame in 2003.
The ride, beginning July 3 in New York and ending July 23 in San Francisco, honors and celebrates female motorcycling heroines of the past, and promotes the continued growth of women motorcyclists and the motorcycling community. The journey will loosely follow the Van Buren sisters’ 1916 path, with the primary route being the historical Lincoln Highway.
Two charities will be funded as a result of the Sisters’ Centennial Motorcycle Ride’s event efforts: Final Salute, Inc. and Women’s Coalition of Motorcyclists. Final Salute is a national women’s veterans’ organization which provides temporary and permanent housing for the over 500,000 homeless female veterans in the United States. The Women’s Coalition of Motorcyclists is an organization providing funding for motorcycle train-the-trainer scholarships that will help enlarge the number of female instructors and coaches for road, dirt and track. APWorks, a subsidiary of airplane maker Airbus, unveiled the world’s first 3D-printed motorcycle that can actually be used as a daily rider. Thanks to 3D printing giving the geometrical freedom to realize such complex shapes, the Light Rider (name given to the fact that it weights only 77 lbs or 35 kg) features an “exoskeleton design” The whole frame is made out of Scalmalloy®, an aircraft grade aluminium offering the strength of titanium.
The Light Rider is powered by a 6 kW electric motor, accelerating the motorcycle with up to 130 Nm torques. Its electric power-to-weight ratio equals the one of a supercar. Only 50 will be made, and APWorks is taking pre-orders with a $2,450 (€2,000) deposit against a $56,000 (€50,000) final cost. Delivery is expected to take about a year.
