’And who was the girl you were with?’ ‘I can’t tell you, Father, I don’t want to ruin her reputation.’ ‘Well, Joey, I’m sure to find out her name sooner or later so you. May as well tell me now.

Was it Tina Minetti?’ ‘I cannot say.’ ‘Was it Teresa Mazzarelli?’ ‘I’ll never tell.’ ‘Was it Nina Capelli?’ ‘I’m sorry, but I cannot name her.’ ‘Was it Cathy Piriano?’ ‘My lips are sealed.’ ‘Was it Rosa DiAngelo, then?’ ‘Please, Father, I cannot tell you.’

Twin Sportsters With The 70’s Scrambler Look

martinisportster1Both were recently built for a major Art & Design Fair in London by Shaw Speed And Custom, the custom division of official UK dealer Shaw Harley-Davison. The crew in charge of building these 2 machines (the 18 and 63) used brand new straight out of the showroom Sportsters XL883Rs with the intention of giving them the appearance – not the ability – of the iconic XLST3. And because Martini Racing is celebrating in 2013 their 150 th anniversary, they also decided that the beautiful tricolor livery would be appropriate for these racing inspired machines.

martinisportster2For many, the 70’s Scrambler style is a statement of cool. To achieve it, Shaw Speed And Custom didn’t have to strip down the bikes to bare frames, an unusual approach when you really want the freedom to re-imagine a factory motorcycle. Tthe motors went bigger straight away with the Screamin’ Eagle upgrades from Harley-Davidson with new heads, barrels and pistons. These engine modifications were finished with the RSD new Sportster Rocker and Derby covers. The stock wheels were replaced with a pair of Harley-Davidson profile rims, the rear off a Dyna to allow allow the wider 180mm rear tire section, Bikes went from belt driven to chains which have been popular with Speed Shop clients in the Sportster market. City Of Sturgis Stands Beside SMRi And Sturgis Trademark

SMRI-LOGO-colorOfficials with the non-profit Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Inc. announced that, in an meeting on July 29, 2013, the Sturgis City Council unanimously endorsed a resolution in support of SMRi and its ownership and licensing of trademarks pertaining to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Inc. The Council’s vote came two weeks after initial discussions on the resolution to support the organization and its volunteer board began. The final vote saw a change in positions by a previously self-described “king” of SMRi opponents and an acknowledged “fence sitter.”

“We see this as a big step toward unifying the community and educating those in Sturgis and beyond about our work to help the people of Sturgis,” said Dean Kinney, Chairman of the SMRi board. “If we don’t protect this intellectual property, someone else will; and we’re determined to help the community realize the financial benefit it deserves for hosting this event.” Continue reading ‘City Of Sturgis Stands Beside SMRi And Sturgis Trademark’

Exclusive. Interview Of Zach Ness About His New TV Series “Let It Ride” On National Geographic. Tonight at 9 P.M.

Zach-Ness-1Tonight, Wednesday August 14 at 9 p.m. on National Geographic, the 1st episode featuring Zach Ness in the new TV series “Let It Ride.” In the show, wild inspiration drives Zach and his crew to build the very best custom motorcycles, whether by resurrecting dead bikes or through premium commissions from clients seeking a one-of-a-kind dream machine. Zach Ness, son of Cory Ness and grandson of customizing legend Arlen Ness, strives to set out his own path, but custom bikes never come easy…

This evening episode. When a stunt rider from the YouTube sensation “”Harley Wheelies”” group commissions Zach to build a bike, the challenging, big-ticket job comes down to the wire, — pushing Zach and his crew to their limits. This monster of a motorcycle needs to be finished in two weeks for the next ““Harley Wheelies”” video shoot. The problem? The bike Zach buys is just a pile of old parts. Tensions rise as the deadline looms and the “Franken-bike” refuses to come together…

Before you watch this first episode, I asked Zach Ness to answer a few questions.

Zach-Ness-2Cyril. You wear a famous name in the custom motorcycle industry. But people know very little about you. Let’s begin by the beginning. Age? Matrimonial status? Education?

Zach. 25 years old, Not Married but have a girlfriend, Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from San Diego State University

Cyril. Tell me about the oldest memory you have associated with motorcycles.

Zach. The oldest memory I can think of is being in my Grandpa’s garage when he was working on one of his Tail Dragger style customs. My parents were gone, so I was at Grandpa’s for the weekend, I remember just sitting down on the garage steps in front of the door leading to the house and just watching and analyzing each process of the build. After several hours I remember asking him countless questions, I think after the 50th question he told me that I talked too much. He told me to watch, learn, and then do. Ever since, I like to keep the talking to a minimum and focus on learning my craft and getting the work done

Cyril. When you were a kid, you wanted to become a?

Zach. I never was set on being anything specific when I was a kid. I was always just interested in learning and experiencing new things/subjects.

Cyril. Do you remember your first accompanied trip with your parents or grandparents to a major rally event? Which one? What was your first impression?

Zach. The first rally I ever went to was Laconia with my dad Cory. I was 15 years old. It was right after I finished building my first motorcycle. My dad was on the Hard Rock Roadhouse tour, which was held in one of the largest bars at the rally. I was allowed into the bar so I thought it was the most insane thing I’ve ever seen. At the time I was new to riding and had my motorcycle driving license, so I loved riding around the event and seeing so many custom bikes in one place. The highlight had to be judging the Hawaiian Tropic Bikini contest. A few months later we had a family party for my birthday and the TV happened to be on the Entertainment channel (E). I popped up on the screen judging the contest with the girls persuading me to give me their vote… I had a big smile on my face and felt pretty cool…. Grandma and Mom didn’t think I was so cool.

Cyril. Many children don’t want to embrace the same career as their parents. Was it the case, at least at a certain period of your life?

Zach. My grandpa and dad have always been my heroes, and fortunately we have always gotten along very well. So I can’t say I’ve ever not wanted to embrace my current path. But at the same time I didn’t want to only follow but to make my own path by diving into all types of motorcycles, design, and possibly other subjects. My core will always be motorcycle, but I also don’t want to limit myself

Zach-Ness-3Cyril. When did you know for sure that you wanted to join the Ness enterprise. How old were you?

Zach. After finishing building my first bike at 15 was when I really knew for sure I wanted to join the Ness enterprise. I was always very interested in bikes and in our business. But it wasn’t until I finished turning that last bolt, fired the engine for the first time, and actually rode my machine down the road that I was positive in my direction. It was a feeling of personal satisfaction that I hadn’t received anywhere else yet and it was the first time I was allowed to ride on the actual street. It was over after that

Cyril. Growing up, was there a special motorcycle, a certain custom builder you admired?

Zach. The builder was Grandpa and the motorcycle was his “SmoothNess.” Till this day I think it the most beautiful motorcycle ever built

Cyril. Your first own motorcycle was?

Zach. The first motorcycle was the full custom I built when I was 15. It was a chopper with a Ness Y2K frame, custom tanks and fenders, and all polished & chrome accessories. The paint was a black base with American flag flames. Someday I would love to get it back. I sold it to purchase my first truck

Cyril. Which year did you officially join the Ness business appearing on the payroll? What is your current official title and responsibilities?

Zach. I started working at the shop at 13 sanding frames, sweeping the floors, and working in packaging putting together bolt kits for products. I worked every summer until 15 when I was officially and legally allowed to be on payroll. Since I was 15 I worked every weekend and every summer until I went off to college. Through college I worked each summer and during my winter & spring breaks. I flew home to work as well. My last two years of college I started getting very involved with our core business and with Victory. I graduated in 2010 and started working full time the day after I moved back. My current responsibilities in our business include: – Design: My dad and I share the responsibility of designing all our products including parts and apparel. As well as our company and personal motorcycle builds. – Catalog and marketing: which include our parts catalog, ads, and our product wirte-ups and information regarding products. Fast Motorcycle Industry News

cyril-Huze-fast-news1328New Harley-Davidson Dealer Principal Is At Age 25 The Youngest Female Owner In U.S.  A woman who grew up in the family Harley-Davidson business has just become the youngest female dealer in the Motor Co.’s American network. Dia Matteson is the new president and director of Motorcycle Times Inc., which owns and operates the Harley-Davidson dealerships in Anchorage, Soldotna and Wasilla. At 25 years old, she is now Harley’s youngest female dealer. Her father, Barry Matteson, retired June 14 after holding the region’s Harley franchise for 37 years, passing the torch to his daughter. “This is all I’ve ever really known. I never really worked anywhere else,” she said. “Even in high school I know this is what I wanted to get into,” Dia Matteson told the Alaska Journal of Commerce. Since her teen years she’s worked most jobs in the dealership, and she became GM In 2008. Of about 650 franchise dealers in America, there are probably fewer than 20 sole franchises with a woman at the helm.

Harley’s wholly-owned subsidiary in India Has So Far Sold Around 2,000 Motorcycles. One-third Were financed By Bank Loans. Harley-Davidson Managing Director for India said that banks offer interest rates of 11 to 12%, the same it offers for luxury passenger cars. “Before we entered the market, the rates were 18-19 per cent but for our customers it is 11 per cent, Prakash pointed out. He said that in India those buying Harley-Davidson motorcycles are in the age group of 35-40 years while the product itself is positioned as a leisure bike to be indulged during the weekends. The price of Harleys is much lower now in Indian as the company has started assembling them in the country through the CKD route. Because of this, the company has been able to reduce the price of their models between 15 per cent and 20 per cent. A completely built unit (CBU) attracts a tax of 75 per cent but a CKD (completely knocked down) unit attracts a mere 10 per cent import duty. A total of nine out of 11 bikes are assembled in India.

I Rode The 3 New Indian Chief Models

cyril-huzeDuring the August 3rd launch of the new Indian Chiefs in Sturgis, Steve Menneto, Vice President of Polaris Motorcycles, declared “Tonight, America’s number one motorcycle company is going to crack the throttle…” As promised I cracked it for you, successively riding the 3 Indian Chief models on the gorgeous twisted roads of the Black Hills and along the very long stretches of the Dakota plain.

Are 325 miles of riding on very different terrains enough to evaluate 3 brand new machines using the same powerplant?  I think so. And if that isn’t enough, I asked my fellow journalists who also experienced a first ride and those among you who participated  in demo rides in Sturgis what they thought of the brand new Indian Classic, Vintage, and Chieftain. Except for tiny variations of opinion on different aspects of each model, they all expressed full agreement that Polaris, in record time of 27 months since acquisition of the Indian brand, produced 3 exceptional machines,  inside and out.

If you love the different Chiefs of pre-1953, and depending on your riding needs and style, you will probably love at least one of the new models if not all. If the Chief is not what you expected to be released as the first new Indian models by Polaris, be patient. As mentioned last week in my interview of Polaris Director of Industrial Design Greg Brew, other Indian platforms and models are in the works…

feature22014 Indian Chief Classic (starting MSRP: $18,999)

After attentively inspecting all 3 models kept secretly in a Rapid City warehouse where only invited members of the press had access, and having a personal preference for “naked” motorcycles, the Classic was my first choice to experience the power and sound of the already highly acclaimed Thunder Stroke 111. Although the 1st part of the ride was in group in direction of the Black Hills to end up in Sturgis with no possibility to ask the engine to give it all, it was undeniable that this motor, forged from key heritage visual elements with modern technology, is not only beautiful but extremely strong and probably the smoothest mass produced v-twin engine I have experienced. A feeling that I will get all the time, at all speeds, in all types of accelerations. Vibrations are present, never overwhelming, disappearing as you gear up.  Although this first test ride was done with a temperature in the 90’s F, the 49-degree air cooled, 119 ft-lbs of torque motor never produced any uncomfortable heat even when cruising at low speed or stopped in traffic.

cyril-huze-motorcycleAlthough I had to request a clutch adjustment before leaving Rapid City (not a big deal, I was riding a pre-production Classic), brilliant engineering doesn’t stop at the engine. Looking for tranny neutral never failed, shifting up or down was fast, precise with just enough “clunk” feel to tell you where you stand without getting annoying. Sound from the true dual exhaust is absolutely unique, making everybody know that you are riding an Indian, both grunty and as “melodious” I have ever heard from a v-twin machine. While riding down to the tiny Black Hills mountain town of Nemo I had to jump on my brakes a couple of times to avoid bikers surprised by some curves and finding themselves in the wrong lane. ABS braking performed exactly as it should, adding confidence to my ride. It’s only before entering Sturgis that I g0t to play a little bit with the handlebar switches, which were correctly placed and within easy reach. Cruising on a Lazelle street where traffic was still somewhat fluid, heads were turning from both sides reminding me that I am riding a brand new bike that very few have seen on down the street. Passing by the Harley-Davidson display, 3 executives give me the thumb up. How cool is that? Parked at the Indian display to go for lunch, I spent time reviewing all the Classic features, trying to remember them for this report. They are: keyless ignition, genuine leather saddle, cruise control, throttle by wire, all LED’s lights including the front fender bonnet, high quality chrome laced spoke wheels, brake caliper covers, cast aluminum frame with integrated air intake, lots of chrome and much more.Cyril-Huze-Indian-Motorcycle

2014 Indian Chief Vintage (starting MSRP: $20,999)

Wanting to experience this powerful cruiser where speed would be less controlled, with my personal photographer riding a Chief vintage we escaped Sturgis via highway 34. Past the Full Throttle and the Buffalo Chip campground, the road is almost flat in direction of Pierre, capital of South Dakota. We played cruising and speeding, exchanged opinions, agreeing that the Thunder Stroke 111 remains smooth whatever you request from it. Then, impatient to live another Chief experience, we decided to switch bikes, me riding the Vintage to evaluate its windshield ability to protect me from the strong Dakota plain winds.

Giving ample time for all bikers present at our pit stop to take pictures of our two Chiefs, I played with the Vintage soft-sided leather bags’ quick release system. It takes just a few seconds to remove them when you don’t need them. Same deal for the quick release windshield, typical of what is offered by other brands for fast installation and removal, although I would have wished its bracket architecture to be a little bit fancier.  If you like handcrafted seat and bags with leather fringes reminiscent of iconic old Indian styling, the Vintage is for you. Bags and seat seemed to attract all hands around us, touching them to evaluate the leather quality, which is very high. The Vintage features the same premium standard features as the Classic, and sports the same iconic design elements like valanced fenders (with chrome vintage badge on both sides), laced wheels, whitewall tires, tank-mounted instrument cluster, and extensive chrome finishes throughout. 2013 Sturgis Rally Attendance. At Mid Week, Best In Many Years.

cyril-huze-sturgis-rallySturgis Attendance Is Way Up Versus Recent Years. It was my strong feeling after only 24 hours spent in and around the Black Hills. Hotel and campground managers, vendors on Sturgis Lazelle street and at Rapid City Black Hills Harley-Davidson confirmed to me that crowds look like the ones of the rally best years.

Since January, consumer index confidence doesn’t stop to climb and bikers show again in Sturgis that when no more worry (or less) about their jobs mortgages and retirement savings, they know how to party and spend money… This morning, the Sturgis city gave the press new numbers proving, at least at mid-week, that the 2013 edition may become one of the best of the 21st century. Daredevil Robbie Knievel Arrested In Sturgis For DUI In A Motorhome

robbieknievelchpRobbie Knievel, the 51-year old daredevil son of Evel Knievel was unapologetic when arrested for DUI while driving a motorhome and crashing in 2 RV’s.

“I ride motorcycles and I friggin’ drink and ride. That’s my deal” said Robbie. And adding these words “I shouldn’t be drinking and driving ’cause I could kill somebody … and you know what, it would be better if I killed myself.”

Well, the alcohol fueled stunt will cost Robbie Knievel a 30 days driving privilege suspension, a $600 fine and probably a couple of lawsuits from the damaged RV’s owners.

Crossed Robbie several times this week in Sturgis. Fortunately, we were both walking…

Country Star Toby Keith Partners With Custom Builder Dar Holdsworth In Brass Balls Cycles

Toby-KeithBrassBallBobbersTuesday evening evening Dar Holdsworth invited a few friends of the industry to meet with Toby Keith for an official announcement that they just partnered in his Oklahoma City-based shop Brass Balls Cycles.  A longtime motorcycling enthusiast (as depicted in his “American Ride” video), Keith met Holdsworth through the Pros 4 Vets organization when he built a custom bike that was raffled to support the Toby Keith Foundation’s OK Kids Korral project.

To celebrate the partnership, Toby Keith came backstage at the Buffalo Chip to pour a shot of Mezcal (distilled alcoholic beverage made from the maguey plant native to Mexico with bottle usually containing a “worm”) to the member of the press present at this intimate celebration. Keith, supposedly, take a couple each night just before performing.) Next to me, fellow journalist Marilyn Stemp screamed “I got the “worm”,  to which Keith immediately replied “lady, I am certain it’s not the 1st time you got the worm…”

Back on topic, Dar Holdsworth explained to me that he intends, with Toby Keith financial and marketing support, to go into custom mass production, that he is already equipped to manufacture 100 units a year, and next year will shoot for 300 for each model he conceives. Crowd-Sourced Custom Motorcycle. The Racer Sportster By DP Custom Cycles.

DP-Racer1DPRacer2DPRacer3A few months ago DP Custom Cycles and Local Motors partnered in an online Motorcycle Design Challenge. 106 participants from 25 countries proposed sketches and renderings for a Sportster to be build later by DP Custom Cycles. Andre Costa from Portugal won the design challenge with a motorcycle inspired by the Brabham BT44 with a Martini Racing livery. Making sure to be faithful to Costa’s concept, DP’s Jarrod and Justin Del Prado went to work in their small shop of New River, AZ and just completed the Sportster “Racer” featured here.

DPRacer4DPRacer5Originality of the overall design is based on 2 main ideas: First, a never seen before air intake and air filter cover directly inspired by the tall roof scoop of the Brabham BT44. Second to lower the handlebars in order to make the gas tank pop out like a small hump and give the Sportster its undeniable racing stance. Continue reading ‘Crowd-Sourced Custom Motorcycle. Mikuni Fuel Pumps For Custom Motorcycle Applications.

mikunifuelpumpMany custom builders wants the freedom of placing the fuel tank wherever they want, and because the motorcycle will no more be fueled fed by gravity, the custom vehicle requires the use of a fuel pump.

Mikuni MK Pulse Fuel Pumps employs an engine’s fluctuating crankcase pressure when running to pump fuel from a remote fuel tank to an engine’s carburetor.f Fuel can be drawn from any location and feed easily to the engine’s induction system without the need for an auxiliary electric fuel pump. Participants were treated to a catered reception with live music from the rockabilly band The Living Deads and a live auction, which featured a custom bike that sold to the highest bidder at $55,000 and an celeryty signed Epiphone guitar at $1700.

With the help of hundreds of riders, the Buffalo Chip was able to present a check for $81,490 to the Black Hills Special Olympics and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame on stage after a performance by blues phenomenon, Jared James Nichols.
