Historic 110 Year-Old Rambler To Be Auctioned By Bonhams In Las Vegas
Published by October 30th, 2012 in Builders, Editorial and Events. An singular and historic 1902 Rambler Model B is going to leave the Indian Motorcycle Museum to be auctioned In January 2013 by Bonhams in Las Vegas. Manufactured by Colonel Albert Pope’s American Cycle Manufacturing Company of New York, the pioneering Rambler motorcycle is in extremely rare and original, unrestored condition. (this motorcycle wears its original paint from 110 years ago, with the exception of an old touch-up on the gas tank, the entire machine is in a complete time-capsule state.)
By 1901, Mr. Pope consolidated the Cleveland, Columbia, Crescent, Imperial, Rambler and Tribune brands all under the umbrella of American Cycle. While Indian has the distinction of being America’s first production motorcycle, Rambler debuted just a few months after Indian’s introductory 1901 Camelback model and was offered for sale the very same year, 1902 – a full year before Harley-Davidson’s first commercial motorcycle.
Very refined and of advanced design, the Rambler was one of the first motorcycles to have a long wheelbase for stability. It was a high-quality machine that did not rely on many off-the-shelf components and its engine was designed and produced in-house while the frame was also purpose-made and not simply a bicycle frame. These manufacturing standards demonstrated Pope’s faith and anticipation of the nascent motorcycle market and the company’s engineering prowess. Custom 10-Seat Harley-Davidson On A Trip To The Germany Motor Essen Show.
Published by October 30th, 2012 in Builders, Customs and Editorial.Steve “Doc” Hopkins, owner of Doc’s Harley-Davidson, built in 2009 this 3000-lbs 25-ft long “Harley train.” The bike (named Timeline) is on its way, via road, train, cargo container and road again to the Essen Motor Show of Germany (December 1-9), a huge car manufacturers exhibition, but also featuring a few custom motorcycles. Most interesting aspect of the motorcycle is that it uses 7 different-generation Harley engines from the F-Head IOE engine to the current Twin Cam. And they all work together thanks to an enormous clutch and to many hours of headache doing the different motors fine-tuning. (Cory Dellenbach/Shawano Leader/AP)

Freestyle Excellence. With A Sexy Video As A Bonus.
Published by October 29th, 2012 in Builders, Customs, Editorial and Videos. Each custom motorcycle competing in bike shows has it’s own specific merits, and this one by Canadian shop Kreater in Toronto got it’s unique personality via a very original hand made frame built from tapered oval tubing and featuring a truss-style design in which the engine and transmission are an integral part of the chassis structure. Harley-Davidson Museum Unveils Tsunami Motorcycle As Memorial To All Victims In Japan
Published by October 25th, 2012 in Builders, Editorial and Events.Yesterday October 24, Harley-Davidson Museum unveils a special display featuring Ikuo Yokoyama’s Harley-Davidson® motorcycle that drifted for more than a year across the Pacific Ocean following the tragic tsunami that devastated parts of northern Japan last year.
The 2004 Harley-Davidson FXSTB Softail Night Train, recovered off the coast of British Columbia by Peter Mark, is being displayed at Yokoyama’s request. He asked to have the motorcycle preserved in its current condition and displayed at the Harley-Davidson Museum as a memorial to those whose lives were lost or forever changed by the 2011 tsunami in Japan.
The remarkable story of the motorcycle’s survival and recovery made international headlines after Mark found it washed ashore on a remote beach on British Columbia’s Graham Island at low tide. One custom that I forgot in my digital files of bikes to be featured, but still very current in terms of style to deserve to be published today.
Keeping your bike “Roots” while mixing and matching parts belonging to several motorcycling eras is the new game and challenge of many custom builders. “Damage Case” is a good example of a chopper that will never be period correct – it was not the intention – but still looking like it was built in the 50’s or 60’s, the 2 decades used for its inspiration. This project from Paul Wideman at Bare Knuckle Choppers for bike owner Nichole Grodski, started from an original 1935/1936 VL Flathead frame modified (rake and stretch kept stock) to welcome a rebuilt (by Stripped Down Cycles) of a 1950 Harley EL Panhead motor dressed with CCE Pan Covers and using a SU carburetor.
