Seventy Three Harley Ironhead Sportster

Jarrod and Justin Del Prado of DP Customs told me the story of Seventy Three, their latest creation in black & blue. In their words:

“Our shop is in New River Arizona, but we haven’t had a local customer since the cows came home.  That is, until we met a dude named Scott Brown at a Bike Night late last year.  He told us a story about how he was born in 1973, how all people born that year are very cool (of course I agreed with him, since I was also born in 73), and that he wanted to build a bike in honor of his esteemed birth into the world of motorcycles. He said he liked DPC’s style and we were the ones who could help him realize his dream of creating SEVENTY THREE.  And it began… Continue reading ‘Seventy Three Harley Ironhead Sportster’

The Devil Ride. New TV Show Premieres on Discovery Tuesday May 8TH at 10pm ET/PT

The Devils Ride sports a diverse crew but one bonded by a commitment to each other and the club. Meet Laffing Devils president Gipsy, who must balance the club’s growing ranks with pressure from older members to maintain the status quo. An ex-Marine who served in Iraq, Gipsy credits the club for helping him deal with the emotional scars of war.

The Laffing Devils not only in open conflict internally but also at risk of losing their homebase. TThe Club’s unofficial headquarters is the auto body shop owned by fellow member Hawkster but police pressure might force the club to find a new home. Moving is going to cost the club money so Gipsy seeks out security work for the Laffing Devils guarding a liquor store in a very dangerous part of town. Will their new responsibilities pit the club against one another? The Devils Ride also covers what would-be members must do to prove themselves to the club before they can be “patched in.”

May Is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Motorcycle safety issue is a perennial source of discussion. In May, bumper stickers, signs and banners will be everywhere to remind car drivers to look twice and save a life.

And while we all extremely supportive of all campaigns to alert drivers on the danger of not seeing motorcycles (and bicycles, and pedestrians) we must acknowledge that we are smaller on the road than almost all vehicles and that the danger of not being seen will always exists somehow. It means that whatever the level of education delivered to others, we must still remain vigilant to others driving mistakes. New School Tracker

In Southwest France, Xavier Raynal loves custom bikes, ordered many from local shops, all until now built with a high tech speed drag or street drag flavor. After a few months of hard riding, each of them ends up being resold to finance the next one. Like a man playing the field with ladies (!), Xavier didn’t want to get too much attached  to any of his bikes … until one of them, for whatever reason, made him so happy that he decided to stay faithful to her…  It’s the one featured here,  built for his 40th birthday by Bernard Massard at V-Twin Mechanic Continue reading ‘New School Tracker’

Limited Edition Of 25 S&S Flathead Power Anders Nygren Signature Series Engines

A limited edition of 25 Anders Nygren Signature Series Engines is for sale by S&S Cycle. Anders Nygren is the founder in the 90’s in Sweden of the original Flathead Power Company, mainly to provide impossible to find parts for his own vintage bikes. His accomplishments as an engine builder and engineer were nothing short of amazing and he moved his business in Louisiana under the name of vintage reproduction parts for restoration and retro custom motorcycles. In July 2007 I reported that victim of a fledging economy the company stopped business and S&S Cycle bought the Flathead Power name and all assets.

S&S Cycle has worked hard to bring the name back to life, but has not forgotten the man who got it all started. These KN-Series engines are available in 93 cubic inch displacement only, and feature Anders’s signature CNC engraved on the gear cover, chrome knuckle tin covers, and the Slasher air cleaner cover on the Super E carburetor. Choose from generator style crankcases for stock style chassis or alternator/generator style crankcases for custom applications. Inaugural Iowa Grand Motorcycle Rally. July 26-29, 2012

After the disappearance of so many shows and rallies, nice to hear about a new one. One of the men behind the first Iowa annual rally is no other than Jay Allen, creator of the World’s Biggest Biker Bar, The Broken Spoke Saloon. Last Spring, Jay created Jay Allen Productions, a rally production company that includes multi-media film projects. At the invitation of the Iowa Speedway, he will help develop the rally at the champion motorsports venue at the Iowa Speedway just outside Des Moines, Iowa.

The rally will include a car show and bike shows sponsored by leading brands and personalities in the industry, major headliner music acts, motorcycle related entertainment, an honorary military event, motorcycle drag races and rodeos, celebrity meet and greets, sportbike and touring events, stunt riders, a swap meet, great camping amenities, and, of course, adventures unique to the Jay Allen brand. Chaz Allen, Mayor of Newton, IA, also expressed his enthusiasm for the newly announced rally and not only because he himself is an avid rider. “We are accustomed to several, high-profile race weekends every year out at Iowa Speedway. To now have what is sure to be one of Iowa’s top motorcycle rallies, in our back yard, speaks volumes for our community and will surely give Newton another economical boost.”

Iowa Speedway Chairman, Conrad Clement, has been riding to rallies for several years and enjoys the cultural authenticity and genuine passion for motorcycles behind Jay Allen’s personality driven brand.  “I have known Jay Allen for several years,” Clement said. “His ability to provide customers a top notch experience will be drawn upon as we gear up for the inaugural Iowa Grand Motorcycle Rally.” Further details regarding the Iowa Grand Motorcycle Rally to be announced.

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Inc. Trademarks. Wal-Mart Added To Lawsuit.

SMRi, the group who owns the Federal Trademark Registration in relation to Sturgis Rally goods and services has obtained from a Federal judge to add Wal-Mart Stores as a defendant in its lawsuit to protect its registered trademarks for “Sturgis” and “Black Hills.”

Last June, SMRI sued Rushmore Photo and Gifts Inc. arguing that it owns the trademarks. with Rushmore Photo & Gifts contending that the terms are geographically descriptive and shouldn’t be trademarked. The Wal-Mart store in Spearfish, South Dakota is selling T-shirts bearing the “Sturgis Motor Classic” logo with tags that say “Officially Licensed Sturgis” and “Authentic Sturgis”. Wal-Mart’s  spokesman Greg Rossiter states that Walmart also believes, like Rushmore Photo & Gifts’s owner Brian Neimann, that the rally has no valid or enforceable trademark rights to the name “Sturgis.”

Pickard Raked Triple Tree For Custom 23″ Front Wheel On Harley-Davidson Bagger

As expected, the introduction of the tall front wheels (above 21″) to replace the Harley stock size, has created a new market for triple trees.

After Arlen Ness, Pickard Wheels now introduce a 6-degree triple tree letting you install a 23″ front without having to cut/modify your frame.

As important, Pickard conceived it such a way that the raked frame doesn’t shorten your trail too much and keeps it close to stock to prevent the risk of wobble while riding at high speed.  The kit comes complete with everything you need to bolt on your front end (no need for headlight rake kits, etc).  The tree is designed to accept Pickard optional 1″ lowering kit and fork tube adapters, while providing plenty of fender clearance. Customized Harley Sportster Still Serviceable By Harley Dealers

Many custom motorcycle lovers have this dilemma. How radical can they go with their new Harley-Davidson without voiding all factory warranties and keeping their bike serviceable at any official Harley dealership. Florida shop Lightning Rod Motorcycles brings an answer to this question when you intend to customize a Sportster. The “Trackster” featured here is still 100% Harley-Davidson regarding the frame, engine and transmission, all kept stock for reliability and serviceable by official HD dealers. A lot of money saved and a lot of troubles associated with some radical custom bikes are avoided. At the same time, with a few modifications and the choice of the right quality custom parts, the result looks and feels like an expensive radical custom when in fact the final price is quite reasonable.   Continue reading ‘Customized Harley Sportster Still Serviceable By Harley Dealers’
