When you are downtown Sturgis you are watched…by remote controlled video surveillance cameras installed on top of several light poles. Poll done by Rapid City Journal. “What you would have liked John McCain do while visiting the rally”. 1- Cruise down main street on a Harley 47%. 2- Do shots at Gunners 19%. 3- Bunjee jump at the Full Throttle 15%. 4- Get a tattoo 13%. 5- Be fitted for a web 6%. Since MacCain did none of the above, imagine the number of votes he didn’t get. Continue reading ‘Sturgis Rally Flash News (Part 2)’
It’s only in 2006 that Stefanie Aziere-Sattler decided to widen her painting subjects to Motorcycles, Hotrods, and Classic Cars. Then, she was selected by S&S Cycle to help commemorate their 50th Anniversary by creating one of a kind oil paintings that reflect the company’s beginnings and rich racing history. And now, logically, she belongs to our show tour and is present in Sturgis at the Championship Hall where she exhibits her paintings, sculptures and illustrations. Some custom builders have already asked her to portray their famous customs. And if you read me while in Sturgis, you can meet with her and ask her to do the same. Or contact her via her website. Nothing to do with motorcycles, but even if you are not a sport addict, the Olympics opening ceremony is a must watch. The show starts at 8 pm local time (5 am PDT) at the Beijing National Stadium (The Bird’s Nest) of the People’s Republic Of China. Amazingly, the broadcast will not be live for free in the US (you will be able to see it taped on NBC at 7.30 PM EST). But it is live and free in almost all countries, even India! Explain to me!!! Because of an anticipated lighter crowd at Sturgis this year, the Builders Breakfast was not sure what to expect from an attendance perspective. You read first it in my Blog in May. Residents of Myrtle Beach got fed up with incidents during the spring rally and wanted the city to shut it down. Myrtle Beach even approved a property tax increase earlier this year to fund efforts aimed at eliminating the rallies. But the city council just proposed a resolution that would limit the number of vendor permits that Horry County can sell for the May bike rallies to 250 and reduce the Harley Davidson spring rally from 10 days to seven days. (400 permits were sold this year). So, as of today it seems that a compromise is possible, but I wonder under which criteria the 250 vendor permits will be given? First come, first serve. Or a selection depending of the type of vendor you are or the ware you sell? To follow…
Steven Tyler At Sturgis Thunder Road
Published by August 6th, 2008 in Builders, Customs and Editorial.Steven Tyler, lead singer of Aerosmith, will be a special celebrity guest at Thunder Road east of Sturgis during this year’s annual motorcycle rally. Tyler, who is the front man of the popular rock band for more than three decades, will be in the Thunderdome at Thunder Road daily Wednesday through Friday, Aug. 6-8. Tyler and his Red Wing Motorcycles will be there beginning at noon each day.
Thunder Road is 3 miles east of Sturgis on S.D. Highway 34. Red Wing Motorcycles.
Crowds attending this year’s event are way down. The consensus is from 30% to 50%, which make it a better rally for participants to be able to move around…but not good for vendors. Only McCain & Kiss were able to create huge traffic jams on Monday evening. Continue reading ‘Sturgis Rally Flash News (Part 1)’
What Happened To Today’s Custom Motorcycle Industry
Published by August 6th, 2008 in Builders, Customs and Editorial.Faithful reader and commentator of my Blog, “Nicker” sent me these interesting thoughts and, as illustration, a very cool picture of a 1908 Curtiss. Read.
“Cyril, Any sports coach will tell you that a team in trouble needs to “get back to basics.” Focusing on the correct execution of basic skills provides the foundation required by a winning effort. Custom motorcycle building is no different.
For motorcycle builders, those basics were established at the turn of the 20th Century when all motorcycles were custom creations built by individuals in garages, sheds, and barns, around a powered bicycle platform. From these humble “custom builder” beginnings has evolved the global motorcycle industry of today. Continue reading ‘What Happened To Today’s Custom Motorcycle Industry’

Presidential Candidate John McCain Seeking Votes Among Sturgis Bikers.
Published by August 4th, 2008 in Editorial.Today, from 7.30 PM to 8.45 PM, Senator McCain will honor Vets and Servicemen during a speech at the Sturgis Buffalo Chips. The rally event attracting thousands of active duty and vets, no doubt that there will be some affinity towards the Senator. Does it mean that McCain has some special program to support motorcycling? Of course not. Personally, I think that it is somewhat surrealistic imagining Senator McCain delivering a speech at the Sturgis Buffalo Chips “Field Of Remembrance” while “Extreme Motorcycle Stunts” and “Wild Women Wrestling “perform on The Main Amphitheater Area and Baker Drivetrain’s “Burn Outs In The Sky” are smoking the place. I am curious to know how the religious right will react and if Senator Obama campaign is going to try to exploit some “McCain biker pictures” against its opponent. The event is starting in a few hours and I also wonder if Senator McCain is going to wear an humorous biker tee-shirt in the style of “If you can read this, the Cindy must have fell off”. I will not be there to watch and listen. So let me know.

The shape of these bars is not new and directly “inspired” by one-off handlebars produced by quite a few builders, including myself, on their customs built during at least the last 4/5 years ago. But few companies mass-produce them. Trask Performance sells them in a version where the bars measure 1” at the grips and crossover and the visual section is 1 ¼”. The crossover is also knurled for a secure slip free fit and pre-drilled for internal wiring. These Bro-Bars can be ordered in heights of 12”, 14” or 16” to fit your riding position. Finished in black powder coat or chrome the bars go for $400. If you want it your way you can pick up a set raw for just $350.00. For sale at Turbo Your Harley.
