Allstate Survey Of Motorcyclists. Are You Surprised?

I love motorcycle insurance surveys. Some answers make me smile, to say the least. Read the main results of the most recent one done online by Allstate with 500 male bikers nationwide. 1- Virtually all hardcore riders answered they would give up their spouse or significant other before their motorcycle. 2- Riders across all classifications were twice as likely to give up their television sets before their motorcycles – a testament to the passion many Americans feel for their bikes and riding. 3- Thirty-five percent of participants own at least one Harley and spend an average of $20,600 for the bike. An additional $2,250, on average, is spent for accessories. Continue reading ‘Allstate Survey Of Motorcyclists. Are You Surprised?’

Harley-Davidson’s Net Falls 23% As Economic Conditions Hamper Sales

Not surprisingly, Harley-Davidson Inc continues to struggle with the weak U.S. economy. Its second-quarter profits fell 23% amid a steep drop in domestic sales. Shipments of motorcycles didn’t fall as much as the company had forecast in the spring, however, and results were better than Wall Street analysts had expected. Harley said second-quarter net income fell to $222.8 million, or 95 cents a share, from $290.5 million, or $1.14 a share,. Harley said it shipped 80,326 motorcycles to its dealers and distributors in the quarter, down 15.6% from a year earlier. The decrease is the result of the previously announced shipment reduction in response to ongoing weakness in the U.S. economy.

RC Components Offers Free Wheel Installation During Sturgis

One week ago I was writing about Baker Drivetrain performing installation of their 6-speed transmission on your bike while you have fun at the rally. Now, it’s the turn of RC Components to offer free wheel installations at multiple locations during this year’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally from August 1st to 10th. Just stop by their truck located at 4th and Lazelle near the Sturgis Community Center to check their wide range of wheel designs and setup an appointment. I have a question: if I ride to Sturgis and have new wheels installed, what do I do with my old wheels. I guess you can find an arrangement with RC to have them shipped back to you. Got a kick only 4-speed bike? Cool. Now you can replace your low tech and messy oil filter with this new Chillin’ Oil Filter/Cooler from Crime Scene Choppers.  As you see, it is conceived with a radial fins bracket not only for looks but because it will help drawing heat out of your oil. Made out of a block of 6061 aluminum, provided with a retro fine machined finish, it mounts to the back 3 bolts on a 4 speed transmission and uses a high tech Fram spin-on element (that you can get at any auto parts store). Wednesday July 16. Ride To Work Day.

I would not do my job if I would not remind you that every year the 3rd Wednesday in July is “Ride To Work Day”. So, it’s today July 16. How many bikers know about it? And how many cagers know? And they should. Today, I have to test ride a client’s restored Knucklehead 39. Will I see more fellow riders on the road? Some suit guys? I wonder.

Hall of Fame, Motorcycle Icon Malcolm Smith from the legendary film “On Any Sunday” joins motorcyclist journalist Brenda Fox in leading the Sturgis Breast Cancer Ride. His racing career included six Baja 1000 victories, four Baja 500 wins, eight gold medals at the International Six Day Trials (ISDT) and a collection of four-wheel victories. Indian Motorcycle Launches Iconic American Brands

Not a surprise. In order to offer its riders (and non riders looking for the cool factor) Indian Motorcycle just launched “Iconic American Brands, Inc.” to develop high-performance riding clothes and premium sportswear under the Indian brand. The first collection should be on sale at Indian dealerships and select department and specialty stores in the fall of 2008. The new company is headed by apparel industry veteran Steven Miska (pictured here) and is based in Seattle because location, port services and other amenities made it the ideal location for dealing with the Asian apparel makers who will manufacture many of the company’s goods. The collection will feature performance apparel and premium sportswear which pays tribute to the heritage of the brand, “embodying the freedom of spirit and adventure associated with motorcycling”, of course a sentence that you can apply to old motorcycle brands. All Pro-One Performance CNC Machine Shop Being Auctioned Off

The board of directors of Pro-One Performace has decided to auction off what seems to be their entire modern machine shop equipment. It includes CNC machine centers, CNC turning centers, Vertical mills, Lathes, Horizontal and Vertical bands saws, welding and polishing equipment, etc. The auction will happen July 30 at 10.30 AM at Pro-One Performance Inc. headquarters 2700 Melbourne Avenue, Pomona, CA. It is conducted by Tauber-Arons, an industrial auctioneers & Liquidators. In addition Pro-One is looking for a corporation to lease their 18,500 sq. ft. facility where their machine shop was sitting.

July 15, 12.50 PM EST: Ron at Pro-One sent me this complement of information: ” Pro-One’s not closing down, just scaling back like most big companies are right now.  They are just getting out of the machine shop business as it’s not profitable.  They have (for years) used other machine shops to handle excess work and will expand the use of local outside shops instead of making everything in-house.  They will continue to do prototype work and R and D at the Pro-One facility”.

Beerhandler. For All Those Who Can’t Handle A Beer.

Is it another example of American creativity? Or a superb Chinese idea to take a few more dollars out of the hands of the Americans? C’mon. Do you need this handle to hold your beer? The argument is that “you have a nice cold beer in your and enjoying a hot summer when someone bumps on yo you and your frosty beer fall out of your had an spills on the ground. What a waste! If only you were able to hold on to the can better. Blah, blah, blah…”. The Beerhandle snaps securely on to any 12 oz can giving you an easy to hold handle. I will not talk to anyone using one. The waste is the handle. Beerhandler.

If This Was Surgis Main Street. Would you Still Come?

Another beautiful text with intelligent thoughts written by Chris Callen, Editor of Cycle Source Magazine. His words are a beautiful gift to all true Bikers. (picture Sara Liberte)

“Cyril, I am writing to you after reading another article where people are talking about how “BAD” Sturgis will be this year. After the pile of magazines and news articles I have been receiving over the past few months I can no longer sit by and take it. What does it take for someone to have a good time anymore? Have we lost the ability to get on our bikes and just go on the adventure, or is it all so focused on who will be at an event that the only reason to go is to be lost in the crowd? Chain Cutting At Harley-Davidson Museum

So, it happened last Saturday. The new Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee’s Menomonee Valley opened with a ribbon cutting, the ribbon being a chain. . .“Inside is a treasure chest. If you like Harleys you’re going to go absolutely nuts,” Harley-Davidson founder’s grandson Willie Davidson said. “It’s for riders, anybody interested in our brand. It belongs in Milwaukee. It’s here and we’re just thrilled.” Friends who were there tell me that the “Engine Room” is one of the most interesting parts of the trip through the company’s 105-year history. You stand front of all the engine models Harley ever produced. You push a button corresponding to the engine of your choice. It starts (all the time), vibrations included. Harley-Davidson expects more than 300,000 visitors this year from all around the world and the Milwaukee mayor Tom Barrett is very excited to see his city in the process of rejuvenating itself.

Spun aluminum Oil tanks. All Shapes. All sizes. Almost.

You know the advantages of using aluminum oil tanks. They are light, durable, and attractive. When you choose one, pay attention to the thickness of the aluminum used, the strength of the mounting bungs and the quality/penetration of the TIG welds. If you are looking for a wide assortments of choices to fit factory bikes and customs in many lengths and diameters, to install horizontally or vertically, one of the best kept secrets in the industry is a company based in Tucson, AZ called Coyote Gear. Look also for some interesting brass fittings. Call 520-733-1169 on my behalf after making your choice in their website at Coyote Gear.

A V8 Wild Cat

Until I read their long press release, I admit I didn’t know anything about Sabertooth Motorcycles. Created in 2005 by Dr. Ben Daniels, the company Just launched an inaugural production model called the WildCat. Central to the design of the WildCat is the Ford Racing 302 ci engine with aluminum GT-40 heads, making this bike “a race car on two wheels!”. Continue reading ‘A V8 Wild Cat’

July 12th. Harley-Davidson Museum Is Open To The Public.

Next time you are in Milwaukee you are going to visit it. Me too. Because if I am in this business, it’s first because I fell in love with a Harley and the intense desire I got to ride it. I don’t belong to the category of those stating “Fxxk The Factory”. Will never, although I don’t have to agree with all Harley decisions and enterprises. Anyway, Harley-Davidson has now it’s own church that non-riders will also visit, an aspect I see as a huge benefit to our motorcycle industry as a whole. I will not be interested in stopping by front of replicas of the Easy Rider or Eveil Knievel bikes, but traveling 105 years of Harley-Davidson history and models in one day is a must for anyone with a 2-wheel passion. I may see you there in August. Harley-Davidson Museum.

Important Sturgis Builders Breakfast Update

As the opposite of what some have stated, the 3rd annual Sturgis Builders Breakfast is not cancelled, but modified from its normal routine to attract more attendees in a challenging economy. We realized that most people participating this year to the Rally are doing so by tightening their belts. Many wished to participate to the Builders Breakfast but told us that the access fee would stretch their budget too much. With that in mind, today we changed our plans so more people can come and ultimately more kids can see their last wish come to life through the South Dakota Make A Wish Foundation. Breaking News. Harley-Davidson Acquires 100% Of Italian MV Agusta

On June 5th, I published an article advising you that Harley-Davidson was in advanced talks to buy Italian manufacturer MV Agusta (see original article HERE). Many of you were skeptical, but I knew that my sources were very reliable. Now it’s official. Harley-Davidson bought all MV Agusta Group shares for a total consideration of approximately 70 million Euros (about $110 million), which includes the satisfaction of existing bank debt for approximately 45 million Euros ($70 million).” MV Agusta Group is a privately held corporation where the Castiglioni family owned 95 % of MVAG shares.
