I know all the jokes you can make just by looking at this very unusual oil tank but very familiar shape. So, I will say nothing more than, yes it’s real oil tank for motorcycle with a capacity of 3.5 quart. Sometimes design inspiration is just around us. I really wonder why it’s called Double Trouble! Is it a bad ass part? Tell me. For sale online at Mammoth Choppers.

Progressive Suspension 812 Series Vintage Looking Shocks
Published by February 26th, 2008 in Builders, Customs and Editorial. You already know that Progressive Suspension is a major player in the suspension industry. As a matter of fact, the company is now the largest aftermarket motorcycle suspension manufacturer in the USA as well as being a supplier of suspension components to many domestic OE manufacturers. For 2008, they released old school looking shocks that I like very much if your bike is, or if you want it to look retro. The 812 Series are multi-stage, velocity sensitive shocks wrapped in full chrome steel cans looking like they come from a 50’s Panhead. Hey, trust me, they also look great also on a late model Dyna. Hidden hardware, billet aluminum end caps, combined with a five position preload adjuster and a heavy duty spring option make them retro-stylish as well as high performance shocks. You have to contact your local dealer, or us at 561-392-5557, to order a set. Progressive Suspension.
Thanks to a faithful reader called "Nicker" who sent me these pictures, you know now how they tow cars in Japan. I guess it’s a way to support their motorcycle industry. I wonder how they tow motorcycles. I guess it can’t be the same way. Do you know?

Are You Going To Daytona Or Orlando or Florida Bike Week?
Published by February 24th, 2008 in Editorial and Events.Orlando Harley-Davidson just completed an interesting new quantitative study to know why bikers are coming to Florida for Bike Week from February 29th to March 9th. Popular belief is that people come to Bike Week to hang out on Main Street in Daytona. Results show that it is simply not the case. In fact, hanging out on Main Street is one of the least desired things to do, right up with paying for parking. According to a survey conducted among Central Florida motorcycle owners on January 24, 2008, nearly 70% of the respondents stated that riding with friends and family is why they come to Bike Week. Now more than ever before riders are enjoying all of the festivities in the entire region. This includes the newly created Olde Florida Ride, 125 miles of back roads with scenic views which will get you back to why you ride in the first place. Trade road hogs for pig farms and swap traffic for trees. And as we know, Orlando and especially Orlando Harley-Davidson is welcoming riders with open arms. Want serious proof of how much they want you there? Ride in and you’ll receive lunch for FREE from 12 pm to4 pm (while supplies last,) from February 29th to March 9th. Ride-In Bike Show – It’s the Showdown in O-Town with cash prizes totaling $16,000 on Thursday, March 6th. Ten Days of daily FREE Concerts with the best in local and regional bands. Do you need other reasons to attend? Gear Head Vendors, Biker Fashion Shows from the Runway to the Roadway, FREE GAS: to be given away on March 1st and March 6th (register to win) and Exclusive Commemorative PIN RUN. For more information, call 407-423-0346 or visit Orlando Harley-Davidson.
After 2 weeks of intense traveling, I needed to relax before Daytona Bike Week. Took my teen-age son to see the 3D movie "U23D". The best thing close to a live U2 concert (I survived 3). This movie puts viewers within the energy of a live U2 stadium gig. Marrying new innovative digital 3D images technology and 5.1 surround sound, it creates a visual and music experience unlike anything seen before in a movie theater. Rush to see it and believe your eyes and ears. .
Custom Voxan By Genius Philippe Starck
Published by February 23rd, 2008 in Builders, Customs and Editorial.Faithful reader Mike Greenwald just reminded me that I should not forget my roots and should talk a little bit about Voxan, the only French brand of tourism motorcycles. Yep, you don’t see a lot here, and in their native country they are limited by national law to a revolting 100 horsepower limit! But give one to designer Philippe Starck and you get the result above, for me a very desirable bike. And if you never heard of Philippe Stark (how could you not?), he is not a custom builder but one of the most famous and wanted designer in the world. He designed boats, toothbrushes, electronics, ash-trays, lamps, door handles, cutlery, candlesticks, kettles, knives, vases, clocks, scooters, motorcycles, desks, beds, taps, baths, toilets, countless hotels and restaurants all over the world and even pasta … in short, our whole life. So, in this post I recommend first that you visit the gorgeous website of Phillippe Starck just to get an idea about what is design excellence and to admire his subversive vision of a better looking world. Second, go to Voxan Motorcycles to see their stable of nice 1000cc V-Twins and what you have been missing in America.
Harley-Davidson would like very much to use this photo taken by well known Easyriders photographer Michael Lichter during the Harley-Davidson 100th anniversary in Milwaukee in 2003. The print deadline is approaching very fast, and as you know, you can’t print a person picture for commercial purpose without first getting legal authorization. So, Michael is actively looking to ID this tattooed guy. If you know him, please write to me at editor@cyrilhuzeblog.com, and I will forward to Michael. Thank you in advance.
Come To Party With Famous Builders At The Daytona Seminole Hard Rock Roadhouse.
Published by February 22nd, 2008 in Builders, Customs, Editorial and Events. The Seminole Hard Rock Roadhouse is one of the places where to party during Daytona Bike . Rock ‘n roll, tattoo contests, motorcycle art photography by Michael Lichter, charity events and you will meet for sure some famous builders. Daytona Roadhouse will feature 4 premier motorcycle builders: Billy Lane, Paul Cox, Russell Mitchell and the debut of Love Hate Choppers, featuring Ami James of Miami Ink and Marlowe B of Marlowe B Customs. Each builder will be on hand throughout the week, interacting with the public and talking about the bikes they have on display. The 1st, 2nd, 7th and 8th will feature the H2Ocean Art Fusion Experiment — three tattoo artists creating live, one-of-a-kind tattoo art on canvas that will be auctioned for charity. Also, amateur bike builders can apply to be on the TV show The Next Great American Builder. 13 individuals will be selected to live and work together for about three months in New Orleans. The Seminole Hard Rock Roadhouse is located on Main Street, housed inside the Dog House Saloon.
Spy Picture Of A Crazy Over 8 Foot Long Front End
Published by February 22nd, 2008 in Builders, Customs, Editorial and Suspension.Almost all part manufacturers will accept to make a custom part for you. Maybe not if it’s too crazy. Surely not if you don’t want to pay the price of a one-off. But Russ at Precious Metal Customs had a client who wanted a Springer fork over 8 foot long. The client knew what to expect and not to expect from such an extended front end. So, Russ called MeanStreet to request such forks. First, they said no, but the client insisted more than a few times. So MeanStreet thought that it would be an interesting technical challenge to “reinvent” the XXXXXL forks. So, here is the result. An hybrid over 8-foot long custom Springer that is part inverted upper tube and Springer lower section. Wow! The customer is extremely excited. We all wait to see how the final bike is going to look and handle…especially when negotiating turns.
Custom Built For One Of Our Special Ops Soldiers In Iraq.
Published by February 21st, 2008 in Builders, Customs and Editorial.
Ash Spurlin is a Special Ops Squad Leader with the US Army fighting in Iraq and when one of his mission is completed, he debriefs his superiors, eats and logs onto his Yahoo account with the intent of finding from friends in the industry who they would recommend for his next build. That’s how he found Guilty Customs and Errant, his next and third custom motorcycle. Errant, part of Guilty Customs “Last Chance” line, caught Spurlin’s attention with its 70’s dragster styled influences. Spurlin comments about his decision to have his next chopper built by Guilty Customs: “Since I had two bobber styled bikes that were similar in looks, I wanted something different, but dependable and affordable. One of my friends told me about Guilty Customs so I called and spoke with Cj Hanlon. We talked for about an hour. I didn’t feel like it was a business call, which is when I knew 100 percent, this company was the kind of business I’d always heard my father and grandfather talk about. Not cookie cutter $65,000 choppers or assembly line bikes, but actual one-on-one discussions about my next bike.” The bike is ready, Spurlin is back in Iraq from where he already talks with his builder CJ Hanlon about a cross-country ride to raise monies for the widows and families of soldiers killed in battle. Another reason to wish him a safe return home. Guilty Customs
David Uhl New Daytona Historical Painting
Published by February 21st, 2008 in Editorial and Painters. As you know, artist David Uhl paints motorcycle history. For the last 4 years he has done commemorative Daytona work. And this year, it is called "Babe" who was the 1941 winner of the Daytona 200. Here he is unloading his bike the morning of the race. David’s new painting will be exhibited during Bike Week at the Ocean Center. As a bonus "Babe" original WLDR will be on his display. Stop by to admire both the painting and this historical racing bike.
Avon Venom-R tires were extremely popular. But the company wanted to improve maneuverability at both high and low speeds, dismissing the common belief that wide tires are unable to corner proficiently. With a rapidly evolving performance cruiser market, and heavier motorcycles, Avon looked for a new tire with handling, durability and aesthetics at the top of their list. Avon describes the new Cobra models as “silently defeating all roads that stand in its path. And if you want to understand a little bit more about tires, follow a few terms that you should know. First, Avon improved the WCTA or Wide Custom Tread Arc, or profile, adapting the one used on race bred bike tires. Then, they worked on the VBD or Advanced variable Density Belt to improve handling when using the widest tire sizes. Construction technology utilizes a jointless belt of ultra-strong material. Above the carcass, these strands are wound closely together at the tire’s center for increased stability and wear resistance. Towards the tire’s edges the fibers are then progressively spaced out to allow the tire to take on a multi-compound effect as the motorcycle leans.
Tread Pattern: Finally, the Cobra features an aggressive tread pattern featuring FFG – Force Following Grooves – to follow the exact direction of forces that are transferred through the tire. Complex? You bet. But your safety and handling of your bike requires such scientific research and development. I will add that from a custom builder point of view the tire is beautiful to look at. The Cobra Is offered in a wide range of sizes, incorporating fitments for Harley Davidson’s V-Rod, Triumph’s Rocket III, Honda’s Goldwing and Valkyrie plus some sizes for custom bike applications. (Discontinued Venom tires are AM41 and RAM1 Front, RAM41 Universal, RAM42 Rear) Avon Motorcycle.
Leroy-Thompson Pro Charged Trendkill Custom Bike
Published by February 20th, 2008 in Builders, Customs, Editorial and Engines.More and more custom builders collaborate with parts manufacturers and vice versa. The result? Usually a very cool bike featuring top of the line new parts. As an example, Scott Webster of Leroy-Thompson Choppers and ProCharger collaborated on a brand new bike named "Trendkill" which was recently unveiled to a packed house at the V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati. The motorcycle has a similar look to their acclaimed Biker Build-Off winner bike called Ethyl. Scott Webster, owner of Leroy-Thompson, has a reputation for creating some very sleek choppers and Trendkill is no exception. The bold design features their own custom Ethyl frame, Brembo brakes and Lazer Star lights, along with a 124” Pro Charged S&S motor that produces 180 hp. ProCharger Super Chargers are bolt-on solutions to increase the percentage of horsepower your engine produces, adding to the overall performance. Attracting New Bikers By Word Of Mouse
Published by February 19th, 2008 in Builders, Customs and Editorial. It is conventional wisdom that the motorcycle industry is worried about the demographic shift of the oldest baby boomers (born in 1946) hitting the United States legal retirement age of 65. As boomers or boomies retire, their older children called Generation X (born 1965 to 1980) and younger ones called Generation Y (born 1980 to 1995) are or will take major roles in our society. So, what’s our industry is doing to tap this vast potential market? Sadly, almost nothing. Do you know of any motorcycle manufacturer, print magazine, motorcycle TV show or motorcycle rally making real efforts to adjust to these 2 new generations whose taste, language and entertainment is quite different from the one of the baby boomers. Xers and Yers have their own specificities, but both were raised front of television, playing Atari 2600 or World Of Warcraft, doing their homework on a computer and socializing through internet social networks like MySpace. In addition to have raised 2 boys belonging 1 to the Xers and 1 to the Yers, I have a lot of interactions with the new generations and I know for sure that they spend more time surfing the web than watching TV, and more time enjoying HD movies than they will ever reading paper magazines. We cannot expect that all children born in a biker family are going to be bikers. And even if it would be the case, it will never be enough to support our industry. I have no doubt that the baby boomers children can acquire our taste and love for the sport of motorcycling. But they are not exposed to it because our industry exclusively “talks” to us, never to them, and never in a place or media where we would get a chance that they listen and fall in love with bikes like I did when I was 18. Let’s take Internet, the meeting place of these 2 new generations. Motorcycle print magazines limit their online presence to a “giant business card” with a few titles and pictures. But in no way they are full and complete interactive online magazines. Consequently their traffic is extremely low and much lower than any improvised website whose author is a biker dude sitting in his kitchen and publishing aggregated motorcycle news copied from other websites. I am an Internet publisher and I believe in the “word of mouse” to extend my passion for motorcycles to others, I don’t understand why my friends and fellow print publishers still don’t recognize it. Major newspapers and magazines were able to have both a successful and profitable simultaneous print and online presence. Why not us?
Replacement Engine Parts From Flathead Power By S&S Cycle.
Published by February 19th, 2008 in Customs, Editorial and Engines. Two weeks ago I told you that S&S was about to release FHP components to complete new vinage engines. S&S knows that the demand for quality replacement parts for vintage restorations is at an all time high, reason why last year they bought Flathead Power. The list of new products from Flathead Power by S&S will start with 1936-‘47 big twin tappet blocks, and tappets in standard and +.005” over sizes. Next, 1963-‘65 cam covers with the flat look of a ’65, as well as a 1966-‘69 stock replacement cam cover will be available. The list of great available components keeps going with 1937–‘48 UL/ULH (medium compression) aluminum cylinder heads that will be available in a silver finish and available as a set or single piece. Cylinder heads, cylinders, rocker arms and rocker shafts for 1936-’47 big twins, along with a complete 93” KN engine will be released by the end of May 2008. Here what I already know. This year, nine full days of racing are set for Feb. 29 to March 8 at the International Speedway. In Ormond Beach, benefiting from the attraction of Bruce Rossmeyer’s Destination Harley (you can also say Destination Daytona),

new biker bars have opened, including a second location of Daytona Beach’s infamous Boot Hill Saloon.
Women’s Cole slaw wresting has expanded too to 2 full days scheduled onr Tuesday and Saturday. The 36th Annual Rat’s Hole Custom Bike Show has expanded to include 3 shoes. Yes, 3. The First Annual Big Daddy Rat’s Party that will include an All-Metrics Custom Bike Show on Thursday. Then, a second show called Old School Bike Show with a Rock ‘N Roll/Greaser theme on Friday {Ted Smith, you should also bring a few cool hot rods). And the main attraction show will be on Saturday, as usual.
A new campground has also opened in the Ocala National Forest that includes contests and entertainment events, and a great ride location for Bike Week events in both Ormond and Daytona Beach. The complete list of events is updated at the official Daytona Bike Week Website.
Primary Covers To Match Or Complement Your Wheels Design
Published by February 18th, 2008 in Customs, Driveline, Editorial and Wheels.
For a final touch on your primary covers the Canadian boys of Concept & Design Cycle created several sets of covers. Fancier than most of what is available from most after-market vendors, they have the merit to nicely complement the design of many designer billet wheels. And if it happens that you roll on RC Components wheels, models Gladiator & Savage, they are an almost perfect match. Concept And Design Cycle. Tel:514-953-6114.
Performance Machine Contrast Cut Contour Belt Drive
Published by February 18th, 2008 in Customs, Driveline and Editorial. As promised, I feature the new version of Performance Machine Contour Belt Drive that I admired this weekend at the Indianapolis Dealers Expo . Many “one-off” Contrast Cut versions of the PM primary have been featured on PM custom bikes in the past couple years. So, by popular demand, PM has decided to offer a production version of their Contour Belt Drive Primary in Contrast Cut finish. The same quality internals are housed in black with carved aluminum windows in the primary covers exposing raw aluminum edges. Its look will match the other Contrast Cut parts offered by PM: brakes, controls, wheels. The PM Primary fits all 1991 through 2008 HD Softails and many customs. It will set you back $3,699.95. But on a top custom, when you love…you don’t count. Performance Machine.
Half Harley. Half Hayabusa. It’s A Barley.
Published by February 18th, 2008 in Builders, Customs, Editorial and Suspension.I admire people trying “crazy” new stuff, like fusing together the framework of a Harley-Davidson with the world-renowned styling of a Suzuki Hayabusa. The concept of this bike was to develop a motorcycle that was Harley Evo motor based but with the functionality and style of a Suzuki Hayabusa. Never thought about this one. And you? As Arnie explained to me when we met in Cincinnati, Tricky Air & Billet introduces you to a brand new Concept Bike called “The Barley”. Tricky Air & Billet not only thought that this styling would be different for the V-Twin market; but then added to that, the adjustability of their front and rear air suspension in order to fine tune the handling and performance characteristics. The objective of this bike is to introduce the V-Twin market to the urban styling of the aftermarket design of the Suzuki Hayabusa. The endless possibilities of the front air suspension that Tricky Air and Billet just developed for the Suzuki Hayabusa opened the doors to many other design applications for the motorcycle industry. With the idea of their new front air suspension Tricky Air & Billet is currently working on other bike concepts. The “Barley” is supposed to give the Harley enthusiasts the ability to race down the street the same way the sport bike does, but still being true to his V-Twin power plant. The only missing feature on this concept bike is the turbo charger, which was part of the original thought, just not shown to you on this picture. The frame of the “Barley” bike is currently available through Maximum Motorcycles, Inc. Tricky Air & Billet will go into production of the gas tank and rear tail section, planning to make it available in carbon fiber. Any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to contact Tricky Air & Billet at 1-866-922-3533
Can a highly artful motorcycle perform as well or even better than a factory motorcycle? My answer is yes. Can a limited edition custom motorcycle be as reliable and comfortable than the same factory motorcycle? Again, my answer is yes. It’s the challenge we face and must win when building custom machines. Resolving the apparent paradox of form & function is even the most exciting part of our business. For 2008, Big Bear Choppers just released a brand new model called “Paradox” and you already know why they picked this name. Artful lines, sunken seat at 19” from the ground, radical fuel tank flowing into an innovative 3D molded composite down tube cover, 23” front and 20” rear wheels, a Baler 6-speed RSD are what you see at first glance. For power plant, you have the choice between a 100” Smooth Evo Carb, a 100” Smooth EFI, or the already popular 114” S&S X-Wedge EFI. But what you don’t see is what Big Bear Choppers qualifies as the smoothest and most comfortable ever pro-street ride. I still have to experience it and maybe Big Bear Choppers is secretly preparing one for me to test during Daytona Bike week. I already see the elegance and strength. Now, I want to experience the handling and the comfort. Big Bear Choppers. Tel:909.878.4340
Revolution. The First Canadian Magazine For Custom Bikes.
Published by February 17th, 2008 in Builders, Customs, Editorial and Events.
We are in a market downturn, and new custom shops are opened, new manufacturers create exciting parts, new production custom bikes are launched and new print and online magazines are created to report on our industry. And it’s great because I am pretty sure that the men behind these new ventures do it first for the love of motorcycles, not to try to become multi-millionaire in less time than it takes to build a true custom bike. Revolution magazine, a new luxurious quarterly magazine published in Canada (obviously in both English & French) is a fine example of what passion can lead to when your true love is custom motorcycles. I would have not known so fast if I was not featured on 6 pages in the current issue. I would not have found out about the quality of the interviews (no good interviews without good questions), the quality of the analysis (they report on both sides of the border) and the beauty of the layout and pictures. And I think that the 2 men behind this new magazine, Christian Fafard and Pascal Richard, like all those entering our business despite unfavorable economic conditions, deserve your support the same way they just supported ma and will support all of us. Revolution Magazine. .
