Victory Racing experienced some highs and lows with racing this weekend after Project 156, ridden by Cycle World Editor Don Canet, crashed in the second section of the mountain course and stopped running less than 2 miles from the summit of the Pikes Peak’s finish line following an aggressive starting pace that proved the potential of the prototype engine.
Canet had qualified first in the Exhibition Class a few days before the race and was buoyed by qualifying fourth overall. Early on in the race, Don was posting speeds on Project 156 that were putting him in the running for an overall podium finish until he touched the slippery white paint in section two’s Brown Bush corner, one of the tightest corners out of the 156 turns, resulting in a minor “lowside” that would cause issues later in the run.
Don was rolling again in 23 seconds and resumed his fast pace. In the third section he was back on race pace posting the fifth fastest split time overall. Alas, it was not meant to be and he had to retire in the fourth and final section of the course around 13,000ft elevation. After such a promising start following practice and qualifying, the Victory Racing team began to set its sights on not just winning their class, but taking the overall lowest time in the motorcycle category.
Canet said: “I was off to a strong start and competitive with the fastest bikes on the mountain. My disappointment is more for the team and how much work they put into Project 156 from the very beginning. The bike was working really well today despite being a prototype and being rebuilt after the practice crash a few weeks ago. To go fast here you have to ride outside the paint lines and I got caught out crossing over one. I never let go of the handlebars and got right back up again but unfortunately the bike stopped running in the last section. There was a midget down in Texas whose testicles hurt and ached almost all the time. The midget went to the doctor and told him about his problem. The doctor told him to drop his pants and he would have a look. The midget dropped his pants. The doctor stood him up onto the examining table, and started to examine him. The doc put one finger under his left testicle and told the midget to turn his head and cough, the usual method to check for a hernia. “Aha!” mumbled the doc and, as he put his finger under the right testicle, he asked the midget to cough again.
“Aha!” said the doctor again, and reached for his surgical scissors. Snip-snip-snip-snip on the right side, then snip-snip-snip-snip on the left side. The midget was so scared he was afraid to look, but noted with amazement that the snipping did not hurt. Racer Kocinski And Harley Executive Richard Teerlink Named To AMA Hall Of Fame. Motorcycle road racer John Kocinski and former Harley-Davidson Motor Co. Nate Hudson is currently in the middle of a 17,000-mile ride all over the US with gas money (and a little bit more, I suppose) paid by Allstate Insurance to spread motorcycle safety for riders and awareness from car drivers. He visits the Department Of Motor Vehicles office in every state’s capital, where he hand delivers a request that the authorities consider including motorcycle awareness in both the driver’s license exam and the state’s drivers’ education curriculum. He is extremely lucky to be alive after colliding head-on with a truck. His helmet Go-Pro camera captured his terrifying crash. The video shows Jesse Lopez enjoying his ride near Glendora on April 1st. His adventure comes to a quick end when he collides with an oncoming truck on a blind curve in the road. He says doesn’t remember much of the accident, but judging from the video, he says he panicked when he saw the truck and applied his motorcycle’s front brakes, which caused him to lose control. Lopez survived, suffering a broken femur, tibia, fibula, ulna and humerus at the elbow.

Starting July 1st, ape-hangers are now legal in South Dakota.
The $20 fine for riding with your hands too high was wiped off the books as governor Dennis Daugaard signed Senate Bill 85, effectively abolishing South Dakota codified law that prohibited such handlebars.
Until now it was a petty offense in South Dakota if you rode motorcycle on a public street or highway with the handlebar grips positioned at or above shoulder height. Starting July 1st, no more regulations on where to hang your hands. Ride high, ride free.

Steve Piehl wants all his friends in the motorcycle industry and media to know that after 35 years at Harley-Davidson, he has decided to retire.
“I’ve been blessed with a wonderful career at Harley-Davidson with great assignments like HOG, the launch of harley-davidson.com, leading the team that created Jumpstart, the Project LiveWire Experience Tour and so many more. I’ve been fortunate to ride Harley’s all over the world and to always have a great motorcycle in my garage (that part is not going to change). And the Sturgis Hall of Fame was way beyond anything I could have ever dreamed of.
Personally, I couldn’t be more excited. We’ve got kids living in three different states, we’ve got a super-fun grandson who’s 18 months old. There’s a brand-new motorcycle in my garage and lots of friends who I’d like to have a beer with. I’ve also got a few non-profits that have been calling me and friends in business who have asked for some help.
So after today, my next chapter will begin. Chapter One was “pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming” good. My goal is to make my next chapter even better. Best regards to you and to all my friends in motorcycling.”

If you love the old days styling, I bet you dream of building/riding a custom powered by the extremely beautiful Panhead engine. The engine replaced the Knucklehead engine in 1948 and was manufactured until 1965 when it was replaced by the Shovelhead.
