Graph Of The Week. Harley-Davidson Retail Sales And Unit Shipments.

In 2014, Harley-Davidson total retail sales hit 267,999, up 2.7% from a year ago. In 2013, Harley sold 260,839 motorcycles or 4.4% more than it did in 2012, which had seen 6.2% higher sales than the preceding year. In short, the growth rate has slowed down a lot. Whether it was the 260,000 bikes sold or the 270,000 shipped, its numbers remain down some 20% from the peak reached in 2006, when the company shipped almost 349,000 bikes and sold 344,000 of them. While Harley has certainly picked itself up after the 2007-2009 recession, that sales growth rate going down in 2014 worries some analysts and investors. As of yesterday Wall Street close Monday February 2, 2015, HOG stock is down – 6.42% versus – 1.76% for the S&P 500.(data. Harley-Davidson annual SEC filing)

A Very Clean 100% Electric Chopper.

The story of early electric motorcycles is very old and somewhat unclear (first patent for an electric bicycle application seems to be on September 9, 1895 in Canton, Ohio) and it took them more than a century to belong to our present. As soon as they become cheaper and more practical by offering a wider travel range than a daily commute, there is no doubt than their market share will increase at a very fast pace.

Swiss-based Bruno Forcella from Sine Cycles shares the ambition of all his fellow custom builders, to build something very different. Bored at the idea of always trying to best another builder’s amazing V-Twin creation, he went the way many others will go during the next decade. Building an electric custom bike from the ground up, using the current electric motorcycle manufacturers’ technology, but in a rigid chopper frame. The Harley-Davidson Museum is excited to announce its special summer exhibit for 2015, which will honor motorcycling’s legend behind the legends – Willie G. Davidson. The exhibit, titled Willie G. Davidson: Artist, Designer, Leader, Legend opens June 13 and runs through Sept. 7, 2015.

Willie G. Davidson serves as Chief Styling Officer Emeritus and Brand Ambassador at Harley-Davidson, Inc. He is affectionately known by millions of motorcycle enthusiasts as “Willie G.,” and he is the grandson of one of the original founders, William A. Davidson. For 49 years, Davidson helped shape the look, sound and feel that define Harley-Davidson motorcycles. In 1981, he was one of 13 executives who raised more than $75 million to purchase Harley-Davidson from AMF Incorporated.

Housed in the Garage special event space, visitors will experience a celebration of the artistry, influence and impact of a man whose designs have defined American motorcycles for generations. Key elements include previously unseen historical artifacts and items from Willie’s personal collection that provide insight into his unique perspective, personal style, creative process, inspiration and influences. In addition, one-of-a-kind vehicles, original designs, art, rare artifacts and media paint an engaging portrait of this iconic figure, his influential career, legacy, and current work. Bill Introduced To Study The Effect Of Ethanol Blends On Vehicles Powertrain

Congressman James Sensenbrenner has once again introduced a bill that would call for the study of mid-level ethanol blends and their effect on internal combustion engines.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a waiver to the Clean Air Act that allowed for the sale of ethanol blends of up to 15 percent. The EPA never studied the effects of the high blend on the power train of any vehicle. They only studied tailpipe emissions. H.R. 21 calls for the study of the new, untested, higher blends, which is sorely needed. Some motorcycle manufacturers are voiding warranties if the 15 percent blend is used in the vehicle. Harley-Davidson Delivers Strong Full-Year 2014 Financial Performance. Retail Motorcycle Sales Grow Worldwide On Strength in International Markets

This morning Thursday January 29, 2015 Harley-Davidson Inc. posted a slightly lower quarterly net profit due largely to a strong U.S. dollar, though results were in line with expectations. The Milwaukee-based company reported net income of $74.5 million in the fourth quarter through Dec. 31, down just over 1 percent from $75.4 million a year earlier. The company reported earnings per share of 35 cents, compared with 34 cents in the fourth quarter of 2013. Analysts had expected earnings per share for the quarter of 34 cents. Worldwide retail sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles grew 2.8 percent in the fourth quarter and 2.7 percent for the full year compared to the year-ago periods, driven by strong international sales – up 9.2 percent in the fourth quarter and 5.4 percent for the full year.

Retail Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Sales . Dealers worldwide sold 47,149 new Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the fourth quarter of 2014, up 2.8 percent compared to 45,875 motorcycles in the year-ago quarter. In the U.S., dealers sold 26,957 new Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the quarter, down 1.6 percent compared to sales of 27,387 motorcycles in the year-ago period. In international markets, dealers sold 20,192 new Harley-Davidson motorcycles during the quarter, up 9.2 percent compared to sales of 18,488 motorcycles in the year-ago period, with unit sales up 14.2 percent in the Asia Pacific region, 8.7 percent in the EMEA region and 4.7 percent in the Latin America region, and down 5.7 percent in Canada. For the full year 2014, dealers sold 267,999 new Harley-Davidson motorcycles worldwide, up 2.7 percent compared to 260,839 motorcycles in 2013. Retail unit sales were up 1.3 percent in the U.S., 11.8 percent in the Asia Pacific region, 6.4 percent in the EMEA region, 2.1 percent in the Latin America region and down 10.8 percent in Canada compared to full-year 2013. Polaris Missing Production Targets For Indian Scout, Victory Magnum And Slingshot. Back Orders Not Filled Before Second Quarter 2015.

Last Tuesday morning, during a conference call following the announcement of Polaris 4th quarter financial results, Polaris Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Scott Wine acknowledged that the company missed its production targets for the new Indian Scout, the 2-tone Chiefs the Victory Magnum and the Slingshot although the factory was running at 100% for most of 2014, except a plant retooling in Spring. He warned that back orders for the Scout and the Slingshot will probably not be fully filled until second quarter of 2015. Currently there are There 175 dealers signed to sell Indian motorcycles, with only 118 operational because others are still in the process of making construction, renovations or additions to their dealerships. 330 dealers have signed up to sell the Slingshot.

Polaris Recalls 2015 Slingshot

Polaris Industries is recalling 1,577 model year 2015 Slingshot motorcycles manufactured August 26, 2014, to December 16, 2014, and 2015 Slingshot SL motorcycles manufactured August 18, 2014, to December 15, 2014.

The recalled motorcycles may be equipped with roll hoops that do not meet hardness specifications. If the roll hoops do not meet strength specifications, in the event of a rollover crash they may not provide proper protection, increasing the risk of a personal injury. Polaris will notify owners, and dealers will replace the roll hoops, free of charge. The recall was expected to begin January 26, 2015. Owners may contact Polaris customer service at 1-651-408-7579. Recall number is SLI-15-01.

Verona, Italy. The city of the play “Romeo and Juliet”, the tragic love story written by William Shakespeare with the famous balcony scene (see picture) where Romeo and Juliet agree to be married. And the city where each January, during 3 days, the international custom world, from manufacturers to custom builders to aftermarket parts vendors display their creations. This year, a record number of exhibitors, and thanks to better weather, probably a record of best attendance by visitors from all over Europe. During the Verona Motor Bike Expo is held one of the Custom Chrome International Series bike shows competition. Sturgis Mayor Answers His Critics About Signing A 75-Year Agreement To Make Harley-Davidson The Official Brand Of The Rally

Here in this website and on social media, many have expressed their disagreement with the city of Sturgis signing a deal with corporate Harley-Davidson to make Harley the official brand of the rally for the next 75 years. Sturgis Mark Carstensen replies to the critics in an article published today by Deb Holland in the Rapid City Journal Meade County Times. The city will not publish the terms of the agreement, but Mark Carstensen gave his justifications for signing such a deal. They are listed below.

“For decades, Harley-Davidson was the unofficial motorcycle of Sturgis, and now, it gives me great pleasure to solidify its status as the ‘Official Motorcycle’ of the 75th Annual Sturgis motorcycle rally and for years to come,” said Sturgis Mayor Mark Carstensen said in announcing the pact. It has been a goal of the Sturgis Rally Department to build more long-term relationships with major sponsors. This agreement will elevate the Sturgis motorcycle rally to a new height as the next generation of motorcycle enthusiasts continue to build on the legacy that began 75 years ago.

The agreement includes several partnering elements that will take place in the upcoming years, but also gives the city some latitude in modifying the agreement. We did sign and enter into a long-term agreement with Harley-Davidson which insures that they will be an anchor in our downtown during the motorcycle rally and year round for many years,” he said. “Now, this agreement is written so we have protection over the years — we know how quickly the world changes. I am saying the agreement signed currently has incremental changes over time, and the ability to be changed over time. Several companies, not just Harley-Davidson, were approached about sponsorship of the 2nd Street Plaza and being the official motorcycle of the Sturgis rally, including Indian Motorcycle. Polaris Reports Record 2014 Fourth Quarter and Full Year Results

Fourth Quarter EPS Increased 27% on Sales Growth of 18%; Full Year 2014 EPS from continuing operations Increased 23% on Sales Growth of 19%.

Fourth Quarter Highlights: Net income increased 25% to $135.4 million, or $1.98 per diluted share, with sales increasing 18% to $1,275.0 million, both fourth quarter records. Off-Road Vehicle sales increased 19%, Motorcycle sales increased 50% and PG&A sales increased 21% in the 2014 fourth quarter. North American retail sales remained strong, increasing 13% in the fourth quarter compared to last year.

Daytona Bike Week. The Ultimate Custom Motorcycle Paint Show.

In the middle of Daytona Bike Week, on Wednesday March 11, 2015, at Destination Daytona Harley Pavilion, Dave and Jody Perewitz will host the Perewitz Custom Motorcycle Paint Show. The show is open to any custom painted motorcycle or trike with a wide variety of classes based on type and style of paint. A select team of custom painters will judge each paint job (not the motorcycle itself).

The Lightning MK1. Timeless Appeal.

What better way to encourage youngsters to build their own motorcycles than to show them what can be accomplished using an old, low price bike equipped with a throbbing engine. We want them to start cutting, grinding, drilling, hammering, notching, welding, milling, etc. They will do it if you point out to them the cheap and fun bikes that they can afford and easily acquire, and of course what can be done with them. Doesn’t matter to them that their own custom motorcycles, by modern performance standards, won’t blow anyone away. They just want to have a blast with them. So, make them dream with examples (isn’t it also the job of a custom builder?) and more beautiful machines will be born, more youngsters will ride and the whole industry will be rejuvenated and energized. Although Old Empire Motorcycles is a professional builder with skills and talent well above the average, their customs could be for youngsters these perfect examples of dream machines born from low cost factory bikes. Jerry Lee Lewis’s 1959 Harley-Davidson Sold For $385,000 At Florida Mecum Auction

Jerry Lee Lewis, the legendary rock-n-roller, was present this Saturday January 24, 2015 at the Mecum Kissimee Florida auction to sell his 1959 FLH Harley-Davidson. The 2 big selling points were that it belongs to Jerry Lee Lewis – not that it had belong to him – and the fact that it is in a pristine condition with only 2,257 miles on the odometer. It was sold for $385,000, proving again that celebrity ownership can add a lot to the value of a collectible. Past ownership by Steve McQueen is probably the most consistent added value a motor vehicle can get during an auction.
