Study. Global Demand For Motorcycles To Rise 7.2% Annually Through 2016

internationalsalesA Freedonia Industry Study Of World Motorcycles Markets was released containing demand forecasts up to 2016 for 23 countries. The study also considers key market environment factors, evaluates company market share, and profiles 34 global motorcycles manufacturer competitors.

The worldwide market for motorcycles, including electrically-powered two wheelers, is forecast to grow 7.2 percent annually to 134.5 million units in 2016, and industry revenues are expected to rise 8.7 percent per year to $90.1 billion. The Asia/Pacific region will continue to dominate worldwide demand, representing 84 percent of all units sold in 2016. The region, which is home to the six largest national motorcycle markets, will account for more than four-fifths of all new unit sales between 2011 and 2016. However, it will only be the fourth fastest growing region in percentage terms behind North America, the Africa/Mideast region, and Eastern Europe, much smaller markets that together account for less than one tenth of global demand. China will remain by far the largest national market.

Standards of living in developing nations to fuel demand. World sales of motorcycles will be fueled by rising standards of living in developing nations. There is a strong correlation between average income levels and motorcycle demand up to a certain point. In emerging economies where motorcycles are an attractive alternative to walking, riding a bicycle, or utilizing mass transit, strong growth in motorcycle sales are triggered once certain per capita income thresholds are reached. However, as average incomes increase further and light vehicles become more affordable, markets start to make the transition from motorcycle to automobile dominance.

Demand gains for motorcycles will also be supported by higher petroleum costs due to the superior fuel efficiency these machines provide compared to light vehicles. Furthermore, a rebound from the 2007-2009 recession in developed countries like the US will lead to higher product sales, particularly of medium and heavy motorcycles, as economic conditions become more favorable and consumers begin to purchase these expensive, recreational items again. Joke Of The Week

cyril-huze-jokeLady: Do you drink?   Man: Yes. Lady: How much a day? Man: Three 6-packs. Lady: How much per 6-pack? Man: About $10.00. Lady: And how long have you been drinking? Man: 15 years. Lady: So a 6 pack cost $10.00 and you have three 6-packs a day which puts your spending each month at $900. In one year, it would be $10,950 correct? Man: Correct. Lady:  If in 1 year you spend $10,950 not accounting for inflation, the past 15 years puts your spending at $204,250 correct? Man: Correct.

Lady: Do you know that if you hadn’t drank, that money could have been put in an interest paying savings account and after accounting for compound interest for the past 15 years, you could have now bought a Ferrari? Man: Do you drink? Lady: No. Man: Where’s YOUR Ferrari then?

Metzeler Just Launched A Very High mileage Tire To Complement Their Best-Selling ME880 Marathon

Me888Marathon1 Last Saturday evening during the V-Twin Expo, as pre-announced here by marketing director Chris Wall, Metzeler introduced the ME888 MARATHON ULTRA. Metzeler, whose emphasis is on quality and performance, is fully committed to the V-Twin segment, including customs, vintage and touring, as epitomized in the Metzeler ME880 Marathon tire and its position as an industry leader.

The brand new model, the ME888 Marathon Ultra (called the triple 8) is a very high-mileage tire with increased wet and dry performance, with the company offering a quality ride guarantee for the life of the tire.

As opposed to rushing the market with a tire that called for compromise, we took the time to engineer a high mileage tire while maintaining all of the characteristics that make a Metzeler tire” pointed out Chris Wall, Metzeler Director of Marketing and Key Accounts. “We fine-tuned all the features that made the ME880 such a success and then focused on a significant mileage improvement.”

With an emphasis on mileage improvement through reduced structural fatigue and better wear uniformity, the Triple 8 employs a ply line with a more distributed and wider geometry than conventional tires. This allows for any added stress to be dissipated towards the sidewall without causing additional fatigue on the contact patch. Additionally, an improved tread pattern design with compound bridges aims to increase stiffness underfoot, which in turn prevents stress transmission from the tread to the belts and carcass plies.  The tread also features a variable width tread groove which maximizes the channeling of water in extreme weather conditions. OCC Merchandising Division Files For Bankruptcy

OCC-BuildingAnd you thought that the American Chopper human and legal saga ended with the TV show.. Hey no. The merchandising division of Orange County Choppers (called Hudson Valley Merchandising) filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in Poughkeepsie last Thursday January 31st. The parent company, Orange County Choppers Holdings, doesn’t belong to the bankruptcy filing.

In 2010, I reported that GE Commercial Finance, the lender of the famous OCC glass and steel building started the foreclosure process after the company missed several payments. At the time, I explained that it was a chicken play between GE and OCC, Paul Teutul Senior trying to oblige his lender to renegotiate more favorable terms for the 2 loans he obtained for a total of $12 million. Reason? Today, the OCC building market value would be $8 million or less. In 2011 GE took the deed to the building.

paul-sr.The company’s bankruptcy proceedings list 1.1 million in assets and $1.4 million in liabilities.  The assets consist primarily of accounts receivable.  The liabilities consist primarily of judgments.  The company stated in that it had no gross income during 2011-2013.

The sole member of the company is Orange County Choppers Holdings, Inc. of Newburgh, New York. Paul Teutul, Sr. owns more than 10% of the company’s equity. Continue reading ‘OCC Merchandising Division Files For Bankruptcy’

Owner Of Motorcycle Shop In California Pleads Guilty To 49 Felony Counts

cyril huze legalFormer Motorcycle Shop Owner Armon Castillo Gevorkian of Santa Clarita, California, who owned County Line Cycles in Simi Valley, pleaded guilty Thursday to each of 49 felony counts alleging he stole more than $1 million from more than 40 people.

Armon Castillo Gevorkian, 45, got people to invest in the purchase of motorcycles and motorcycle engines, telling them he could “quickly flip” the engines and sell them in Europe, Japan or China. Gevorkian told people he could get good deals on motorcycles at auctions. He showed people photographs of the motorcycles, but instead of buying them, he kept the money, says prosecutor Margaret Coyle. Gevorkian never sold any motorcycles or motorcycle engines and is charged with stealing more than $1 million from more than 40 victims, including four elderly people. It’s All You Get. The Movie About The Life Of Ron Finch.

ronfinch1

Ron Finch is a highly imaginative and extremely versatile artist, a colorful and high-esteemed presence in the custom motorcycle industry. A multi-talented artist he is known world-wide for his outrageous custom motorcycles, sculptures, objects resisting any aesthetic classification and very innovative paintings as much for the experimentation techniques than for their unique designs and use of colors. Since 1965 Finch’s creations continue to draw big crowds of admirers, to attract international media attention inspiring magazine headlines such as “The Fabulous Finch”, “The King of French”, ”Finch Effect”, “King of Custom”, “Mad About Metal”, “Michigan Magician”, “Ron Finch is Nuts”, “Finch Fest”, “Got Finch?”, “Ron Finch Gets Finicky” etc…

“It’s all You Get”  is a new documentary celebrating Ron and after watching it 2 times in a row, I think it’s probably the most faithful portrait that was done of him, first perfectly explaining through life stories how little Ron became the extreme artist we know and admire, then through his wife Ruth and long time friends his immense contribution to the motorcycle industry and the art world. A private screening and party is being scheduled for March or April. But you can already order the full length 91-minute long DVD or BluRay disc by going to Ron Finch Video  (Written, produced and directed by Danny Grinnell)

2 Magazine Titles. Same Magazine?

easyridersHey Cyril,

“Thought this might be a good topic for you blog. Last year I subscribed to EasyRiders and went with their special offer to get V-Twin at a discounted rate. Over the course of the year I’ve noticed that more and more content from EasyRiders is showing up in V-Twin to where the only difference between the two is one has boobs and one doesn’t. Today the latest issues of both publications showed up in my mailbox, check it out. While I know print is slowly dying this sucks for those of us that subscribed hoping for different content.”

Italian Motorcycles from the 1950’s And1960’s. Bellissima.

Italy-motorcyclesIf you rank Italy on a wide range of manufactured products, from fashion to furniture to cars and motorcycles, the country is still ranking number one for artistic design quality. World War II is the reason why Italy became a 2-wheel country and started to produce some of the most beautiful motorcycles.

In 1945, Italy’s manufacturing industry was destroyed by intense plants bombing. With help from the government who authorized anyone at age of 14 to operate, unlicensed, any internal combustion vehicle not exceeding 50cc and able to travel at a top speed of 27 miles per hour, the need for mobility in an impoverished country pushed old and new manufacturers to produce cheap scooters, mopped and small size motorcycles.

And they did it, producing affordable motorcycles on a very large scale. In 1950, only 5 years after the end of the war, an outstanding 220 motorcycle manufacturers were competing on price and design originality. That year, 2-wheelers outnumbered cars by 1 million.

The 2 following decades demonstrated and exemplified to the rest of the world Italian motorcycle design excellence, and this until Japanese manufacturers invaded Italy offering larger, faster, quicker, and lower maintenance motorcycles like the hugely successful CB750 launched in 1969. The beautiful Italian motorcycles of the 50’s and 60’s are rarely seen in the US. It’s well worth taking again a glimpse at some of them. (more bikes after the jump)
