Congress Clears Highway Bill

A message from Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF)

As reported by the Motorcycle Riders Foundation in a previous release, the US Congress has passed the much anticipated highway funding legislation.
The bill soared through both chambers this afternoon. Both chambers did have some nay votes, all coming from Republicans because of a few riders that were attached concerning student loan rates and the national flood insurance program. President Obama is expected to grant the measure swift passage into law.

The Highway Bill has been in the past, a vehicle for pro and anti-motorcycle issues. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation has worked closely with the primary authors of the legislation to ensure that this bill was all pro-motorcycle and had no anti-motorcycling issues. Oil Change. Based on Time or Miles? The Answer From Spectro Oils.

Question. I own five motorcycles (2 antiques) and only use Spectro oils (I picked up a case this morning). On many of these bikes I only put perhaps 1,000 miles on them or less annually. People tell me I should change the oil before putting them to bed for the winter but I don’t want to be wasteful either. What is your recommendation? Should one change oil based on time or miles? Once the bike has been ridden any miles after the oil change should it be changed again before storage? I thought I would ask the experts!

Answer. Even though you don’t roll many miles, time does count for something, as the oil does oxidize while it is just sitting in the engine. That oxidation can affect the lubricating qualities of the oil, and whatever contamination did occur during your brief riding activities also then has a long time to degrade the inside surfaces of the engine. It may not amount to much, but why not be on the safe side with your machines? Continue reading ‘Oil Change. Based on Time or Miles? The Answer From Spectro Oils.’

Ex-Sturgis Easyriders Saloon & Steakhouse To Operate Under New Name With Added New Hooters Restaurant Next Door

The owner of the Sturgis Easyriders Saloon & Steakhouse being sued by magazine publisher Paisano Publications for dropping the Easyriders brand name says it will continue as Sturgis Saloon Company. The suit filed by the publisher in Los Angeles last week accuses the bar of breaching contract by covering up its Easyriders logos and acting as their own sales agent for vendor space.  Owner Scott Upton says that his company, KSLB&D based in Fargo, North Dakota, denies all the allegations in Paisano’s complaint and will seek all recoverable damages. He also declared that he will operate a Hooters during the 2012 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, in a spot between its saloon and the former Broken Spoke, a business he acquired and renamed “Sickies Garage.”

Ducati New Record-Breaking Sales. During World Ducati Week held in Italy,  President of Ducati Motor Holding) Gabriele Del Torchio discussed the manufacturer’s continued growth and new record-breaking sales in the month of May (sales +12 percent, revenues +20 percent YTD). He said that since 2006 Ducati has doubled its market share and sales. Despite the shrinking international market (over-500cc = -4% YTD) and after 2011 proved to be the best in Ducati’s history. During May 2012 the company achieved an absolute record with motorcycle sales of over 6,500, a 12% growth compared to May 2011. 35,300 bikes were sold in 2006, 42,200 at the end of 2011 and 2012 should be much better. Insuring Your Motorcycle With The Company Insuring Your Car May Be A Bad Idea. Because there are companies that specialize in motorcycles, they might offer better rates. So, first shop around. Second, membership in associations and groups like the American Motorcyclist Association, the Harley Owners Group, etc can get you big discounts. Third, don’t forget to ask for an infrequent rider’s discount if you take your bike occasionally or only at certain periods of the year like spring and summer. Fourth, keeping your bike in a lock garage, living in a man gated community, being over 50, having an anti-theft device installed will bring you immediate discounts. Fifth, see how a larger deductible, for example from $250 to $1,000 can trim your insurance cost by 10 to 20%. Continue reading ‘Fast Motorcycle Industry News’

Exclusive. Will Barclay, Winner Of Hoka Hey 2010 And 2011, Sues Organizers Jim And Beth Durham For 5.29 Million.

In October 2011, after the announce by Hoka Hey organizers Jim and Beth Durham, that all 11 contenders were disqualified (those who finished the 14,000 miles from Arizona to Nova Scotia, Canada inside the allotted time) and that nobody would receive the promised prize money (including $250,00 cash and a $40,000 motorcycle for the top winner) I interviewed William Barclay, already winner of the 2010 edition and again the 1st one to go through the finish line in 2011. At that time, Barclay gave me very little information about his conflict with the organizers, but promised to contact me first as soon as he could talk…

Yesterday, Barclay contacted me and gave me with a copy of the lawsuit he just filed in District Of Arizona against “The Medecine Show Land Trust” (James G. Redcloud, Elizatheth Durham) and E.B. Chester (Harley-Davidson Mesa, AZ) for breach of contract, breach of covenant, intentional interference with contract, intentional interference with business advantage, slander, libel, conspiracy. He is requesting a jury trial and asks the defendants to pay him a total of $5.29 million in damages, plus attorney fees and court costs. I attach a full PDF copy of the lawsuit at the end of this article.

I summarize the allegations made by William Barclay in this lawsuit:

Will Barclay was the first entrant to reach the appointed destination within the allotted time. Organizers refused to turn over the 1st place prizes, $250,000 in cash and the promised $40,000 Harley-Davidson motorcycle (plus $10,000 in cash that the winner’s home dealership was supposed to receive.) Barclay was disqualified for failing a polygraph test that he actually passed. Barclay states that he passed the polygraph (as confirmed first by the person who administered the test and by Jim Durham) but that later  at the “awards ceremony”, organizers accused him, without any justification, of having used “countermeasures” (techniques to control breathing and heart beats during interview) to defeat this polygraph test.  Continue reading ‘Exclusive.
