Daytona Biketoberfest. October 13-16, 2011

Again, we all wonder if this year’s Daytona Biketoberfest is going to show some signs of renewed life and street energy. I remember the first edition in 1993, saw the event grow until 2005, then slowly decline in terms of frequentation until now. It doesn’t mean less interest for those participating and those working the event. Hotels and restaurants are cheaper, service is better, a lot of vendors offer discounts and or free installations, and the weather is usually very pleasant.

I forecast an attendance on the same level than last year, which would be good news at a time when all Americans wonder if we are on the verge or already in a double-dip recession. Anyway, I will be there to report and summarize after the jump some of the main events. Continue reading ‘Daytona Biketoberfest. October 13-16, 2011’

Royal Enfield To Introduce Cafe Racer Model, Diesel Bikes And To Enter The 750 cc Twin Cylinder Market

Royal Enfield unveiled the Cafe Racer concept featured here at the Delhi 2010 Auto Expo and gave the green light for production with availability in 1 year. The company is also planning to re-introduce diesel models to the Indian market (it was the 1st motorcycle manufacturer to produce them in this country during the late 90’s.) So many manufacturers are rushing to the Indian market that Royal Enfield also decided to move into the 750 cc v-twin market to face new foreign competition.

Based in Chennai, India Royal Enfield motorcycles demand remains well above the company’s capacity, now at 75,000 units per year. Royal Enfield.

V-Twin Expo 2012. New Custom Bagger Event Will Be Introduced.

Obviously, the good thing about competition, even just a little bit of it, is to push you to innovate. Because in 2012 the Cincinnati V-Twin Expo will face some competition from the Indianapolis V-Twin Dealer Show to attract vendors and dealers, and also because owner of the show Easyriders needs to promote a new title dedicated to baggers, the V-Twin Expo will organize a Road Iron Bagger Review. The idea is to invite some well known builders to exhibit their with custom bagger creations and also to organize a seminar where they will interact with dealers about how to take advantage of one of the hottest trends of these last 5 years. In Memory Of Kenny Lucas (1963-2011) Partner At Knockout Motorcycle Co.

A message from Ralph Randolf, owner of Knockout Motorcycle Co. “On 9-30-2011 we here at Knockout Motorcycle Co. lost our friend, business partner and shop manager Kenny Lucas in a motorcyle accident. I don’t have the words to explain how sad I am. I am so grateful to have known him and to have had him part of my life. I have so many memories to share about him but there is not enough space to express them. In 1999, I started a brand called Rockem Sockem Motorcycle Co. that I couldn’t have built nor the current Knockout Motorcycles Co. without him. I will miss you. Kenny my friend. I will keep the brand alive forever in your memory. Love & Respect forever.” Ralph Randolph (remembrance video by producer Job Mel in L.A.)

Sentoh. A Neo Cafe Racer

Sweet memories of high school. Not necessary regretting your teachers, but what you were doing at home instead of your homework… In the case of Jim Giuffra, customizing his first bike, a 76 Honda CB750F that he still owns. A lot of fun, he remembers, not surprisingly sparking a successful career in Metric customizing. But what sets Jim and his shop AFT Customs apart from most his fellow Metric custom builders is that he is, through his work, the most accepted builder by the traditional American V-Twin custom motorcycle scene. Of course, the reason being his very radical bodywork fabrications and technical prowesses that you usually find on top American custom bikes. While keeping Japanese engines as his preferred platforms, Jim (and his attractive lady welders and mechanics) has no difficulty being recognized by his American builder peers. Proof is in his  multi wins in top bike show competitions like the Los Angeles Calendar Show and the AMD World Championship Of Bike Building.  Continue reading ‘Sentoh. A Neo Cafe Racer’

Eller Allen Racing. Working Hard To Establish A Land Speed Record In El Mirage

The humble racing and cycle building legend, Wink Eller, has some killer tricks up his sleeve for El Mirage 2011. Teamed now with motorcycle rally legend, land speed racer and Broken Spoke Saloon founder, Jay Allen, the duo is, “a force to be reckoned with.”

Their original goal of the Eller Allen Racing Team was to take the World Finals at Bonneville by storm this year, but the intricacies of building a masterpiece race bullet is taking more time than anticipated. “I knew this was going to be a big challenge. You’ve got to take your time to properly build a bike for a 200 mph run. It takes a lot of painstaking work and it takes time to do it exactly right,” Eller says. Exactly right in the world of Wink Eller means that there are no short cuts and no cut corners when creating something that will be downright mind blowing and surely record setting. The heartbeat of these racing innovations is an S&S engine coupled with a Baker transmission. Continue reading ‘Eller Allen Racing. Working Hard To Establish A Land Speed Record In El Mirage’

Spain. Testing Station mechanics Arrested For Allegedly Altering Documents On Imported Harley-Davidson Motorcycles.

In all European countries, many bikers have been importing their Harley-Davidson motorcycles directly from the United States and not dealing with the official Harley Davidson dealers of their local countries. In Spain, it is alleged that documents of these imported bikes have been altered to make them meet European regulations.

Mechanics and other employees who work for Spanish ITV/MOT testing stations (the equivalent of DOT in the USA) have been arrested and face charges of fraud and falsification of documents. None of those arrested have yet been indicted. Police is stopping and inspecting as many Harley riders as possible, checking their documents (titles, VIN numbers), with many having their driver licenses confiscated and being told that they can’t no more ride their Harleys.

Harley Davidson says that since 2003 all motorcycles made for the European market carry the code 5HD on their VIN numbers, while those bikes with USA specification have the code 1HD. Those riding with the code 1H are specifically targeted by Spanish police. Some legal representatives of these importing companies have even claimed that Harley Davidson España is behind the altering of the technical documents…While the investigation is going on, Spanish bikers organize protest rides… (photo EFE)

Fonzie’s Triumph TR5 Scrambler From TV Series Happy Days To Be Auctioned

The 1949 Triumph Trophy TR5 Scrambler Custom ridden by The Fonz in the television hit series Happy Days will be one of the highlights at Bonhams California Sale in Los Angeles held November 12th, at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. Happy Days, the beloved American sitcom that aired for ten years from 1974 to 1984 and attracted millions of viewers each week, helped launched the career of such actors as Ron Howard, Scott Baio and Henry Winkler.

Winkler’s character, Arthur Fonzarelli – known famously as The Fonz and Fonzie – was initially just a secondary character that became so popular with fans he was soon made the central figure of the show. As the epitome of cool, the motorcycle-loving Fonzie, dressed in the stereotypical garb of The Wild Ones, spawned countless wannabes among the youth of America and became a cultural icon that still resonates today.  And Fonzie’s motorcycle, a customized Triumph, was owned off-screen by another cultural icon, Bud Ekins. Cycle World Magazine Sold Again

Cycle World, has been sold by Hearst to the Bonnier Corporation. Cycle World was owned during 25 years by Hachette Filipacchi, then sold last year to Hearst Magazines and now resold to the Bonnier Group, a Swedish company with publishing presence in the USA, owning about 50 titles, the most well known being Popular Science, Outdoor Life and Parenting.

I am told by a reliable source that Cycle World was sold again because a too small magazine in the Hearst’s huge consumer-magazine operation. Contrary to many months of rumors predicting that Cycle World will go out of business, Cycle World is still in position to continue publishing articles covering everything from technical reviews to professional profiles and competition coverage.

Cyril Huze Blog. Five Years Later…

Today September 29, 2011 marks the 5th Anniversary of this Blog. Five years of my life writing and publishing this motorcycle news website, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Exactly 4923 articles and 62,085 comments later at the time of this writing, Cyril Huze Blog is by far, and more than ever, the World’s Number One Source For Custom Motorcycle News.

It is recognized by the custom motorcycle community as the most influential magazine in its category with unrivaled coverage, unlimited access and has become the primary source of news for most other magazines in the US and abroad. At this day, no direct competitor, print or digital magazine, here in the US or abroad, can honestly claim an audience exceeding more than a low percentage of our total proven readership (source Google Analytics).

From day one, this Blog was a huge success with motorcycle owners and its audience never failed to grow. During the last 12 months, monthly average readership was 319,750 monthly unique visitors (for 438,500 monthly page views), an increase of visitors of 19%  versus same period last year. In only 4 days, this Blog has more readers than the largest American V-Twin print magazine. It has more than 3 1/2 times the number of readers and 5 times more page/views than its largest direct online competitor (Regarding digital magazines, let me mention again that a HIT is only a server log created by photos, graphics, text links, etc, and has never been and is not a human visit to a website, so can’t be counted as a reader, something that many website owners are doing to blur the truth about their real readership.)

In addition, during the last 12 months, on average 9.7 subscribers signed up daily to receive every morning in their mailbox our daily RSS Feed for a total at this day of 9492 daily subscribers (most of the international motorcycle industry receives a weekly update on Mondays.) As I anticipated, it took more time for the conservative and traditionally low-tech motorcycle industry to understand all internet power and capabilities. Can any company really conceive living and doing business again in a pre-computer, pre-social network world? Especially during these last 3 years the motorcycle industry was obliged to wake up to the internet , to evolve, to change their way to market and advertise, with a lot of manufacturers, vendors, builders and show organizers now begging for digital press release publications for immediate sales of their products or services, with others joining as permanent sponsors.

Visitors Overview Per Week From August 28, 2010 to August 28, 2011 (Source Google Analytics)
This Blog was born in 2006 from the desire of custom bike lovers to have a platform where they could get from an industry insider the latest complete coverage of breaking news about bikes, parts, people and companies as they happen, not 3 months later, and without the filter of an Editor In Chief choosing to publish only what makes current or potential advertisers pleased with the content. A digital magazine independent of any outside influence and where, through comments, all readers, either individuals or professionals, can congratulate, criticize, suggest and recommend to other fellow riders. Without censure of point of views, except of course if someone is not respectful to others.

A recent study shows that on average in the US and 15 other countries, 18 to 55 y.o. people spend more than a third of their leisure time online where they are personally engaged in personal and business relations, researching and shopping, locally, nationally and internationally. It doesn’t include the time spent online while at work… (our traffic analytic reports indicate that 49 % among you read this Blog during business hours.) Evidently, the category 18 to 35 (holy grail of the motorcycle industry) is even more involved with the internet in one form or the other. As a matter of fact, very few decisions are made today without any input from online research. And of course it includes all decisions made regarding your motorcycle, the selection of a vendor, the purchase of a custom part or the decision of an event to go to, etc. Reason why all the 4923 articles I have published during these last 5 years are kept online and accessible to all at any time via keywords entered in major Search Engines like Google or our own Archives and Search Pages. Carlsberg Beer Versus Bikers

Dirt Track Inspired Kit For Harley-Davidson Sportster

More and more builders are proposing complete body kits to turn your bike into a Cafe Racer with some 70’s genes, or like this one into a dirt track looking machine. And the preferred donor bike is of course a Harley-Davidson Sportster. Harley Sportster engine and transmission are cradled in a Norton looking frame giving this new contraption the name of Norley. Motorcyclists Sue Over Enforcement Of Nevada’s Helmet Law

Same illegal enforcement, same unethical prosecution, same dismissals. Same, same, same…

By Steve Green. “Twelve motorcycle riders filed a class action lawsuit Tuesday against Clark County and five cities within the county, charging arbitrary and discriminatory enforcement of Nevada’s helmet law. The suit filed in U.S. District Court names as defendants the county and the cities of Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson and Mesquite; and Boulder City.

If certified as a class, the suit could represent more than 40,000 motorcycle riders in the county. The suit, filed by Las Vegas attorney Travis Barrick, charges “defendants, through their agents, have an ongoing pattern and practice of issuing helmet tickets to the class members that are not supported by constitutionally sufficient probable cause, thereby violating the civil rights of the class members.” This violates the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution barring unreasonable search and seizure, the lawsuit says. Joke Of The Week.

A DEA officer stopped at a ranch in Texas , and talked with an old rancher. He told the rancher, “I need to inspect your ranch for illegally grown drugs.” The rancher said, “Okay , but don’t go in that field over there…..”, as he pointed out the location.

The DEA officer verbally exploded saying, ” Mister, I have the authority of the Federal Government with me !” Reaching into his rear pants pocket, he removed his badge and proudly displayed it to the rancher. “See this badge?! This badge means I am allowed to go wherever I wish…. On any land !! No questions asked or answers given!! Have I made myself clear…….do you understand ?!!”

The rancher nodded politely, apologized, and went about his chores. A short time later, the old rancher heard loud screams, looked up, and saw the DEA officer running for his life, being chased by the rancher’s big Santa Gertrudis bull…… With every step the bull was gaining ground on the officer, and it seemed likely that he’d sure enough get gored before he reached safety. The officer was clearly terrified. The rancher threw down his tools, ran to the fence and yelled at the top of his lungs….. (I just love this part…..) “Your badge, show him your BADGE……… ! !”

Vintage Looking Motorized Bicycle For Big Boys

In California, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Roland Preissner  & Tim Cooper are building some fine motorized bicycles in the classic/vintage style. Not copy of any vintage model like Harley Davidson or Indian motorcycles. A lot of class, attention to details with frames built by the pair the way motorcycles frames were made at the beginning of last century.

They use a unitized” frame design, where the fuel tank appears to “float” within the frame hoop, but is actually integrated into the frame structure, adding tremendous strength and torsional rigidity. The frame design is “modular”, having a removable rear triangle, increasing its’ versatility. Their  motorized bicycles are all 4 stroke powered 49 CC and up (they are descendants of the classic Honda “50” and are famous for their ruggedness and fuel economy) with a range of power pushing them to 70 mph+ for off road use. Myrtle Beach Fall Bike Rally (September 29 to October 2, 2011). In recent years bikers boycotted Myrtle Beach over its controversial helmet law approved in 2008 and struck down by the S.C. Supreme Court a year ago. Has these last 3 year’s abrasive sentiment among bikers toward Myrtle Beach disappeared? Will the rally dubbed Hurricane Alley and set to kick off on Wednesday be better than last year? Organized by Harley-Davidson Myrtle Beach the five-day event is expected to attract more bikers than last year, which should not be too difficult, the 2010 edition of the rally having been a total fiasco. Horry County issued 28 vendor permits for the fall rally this year, down 3 from last year, with most of the vendors on the south end and at the Harley-Davidson dealership off U.S. 17 Business near Myrtle Beach State Park, the others (about 10) set up at the North Myrtle Beach shopping and entertainment complex. Those permits do not include those issued for Barefoot Landing, which didn’t have vendors last fall, but may have a couple showing up on Thursday. Continue reading ‘Fast Motorcycle Industry News’

Motorcycle Exhaust Wrap Kits

Exhaust wrap was born from the need by racers to provide added horsepower while keeping their exhaust systems cooler. Then its use went to custom and stock bikes to give them this racing, old school feel, resolving at the same time a cosmetic issue that many have, hiding the pipes yellowing and blueing. It is recommended, but not necessary, to add a silicone coating for great sealing properties against oil, gas, dirt, harsh abrasives and road grime. Continue reading ‘Motorcycle Exhaust Wrap Kits’

Motorcycles Greener Than Cars. Myth Or Reality?

In a new TV episode of “Mythbusters” this evening Wednesday September 28, 2011 on the Discovery Channel at 9 pm (ET), the 2 show hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman are testing the myth that a motorcycle is a greener and a cleaner machine than a car. Is it always true?

I don’t know the methodology and vehicles they used, just that they hire, to give a scientific aspect to their study, Kent Johnson, a research engineer at the Center For Evironmental Research & Technology. I will watch. (followed by a segment to demonstrate if a bullet could take out a bazooka.)

New Powerflow III 2 Into 1 Exhaust System Samson Promises Up To 20% Horsepower Increase.

Kenny Price, the boss of Samson Motorcycle Products, claims that his new two into one exhaust system featured here is the most powerful ever made. How does it work? The power is generated through a series of chambers, which Samson refers to as the “Power Chamber”, which helps condense and intensify exhaust flow, resulting in extremely high horsepower and torque. Independent Dyno testing would have shown that by just changing out the stock pipes with this new Powerflow III two-into-one system, riders may experience up to a 20% increase in both horsepower as well as torque. It would mean turning a stock exhaust Harley-Davidson into a high performance bike by simply changing out the pipes. Samson offers over.
