Remember the story of Joe Cool Inc. at 1052 North Beach Street in Daytona and its 2 affiliates companies in New York obtaining for a fee of $87.50. a State trademark for the name “Daytona Beach Bike Week? Last Fall, Joe Cool’s owner Yosef Amar sent letters to several area merchants threatening legal action for selling Bike Week products unless they agreed to pay royalties.
Well, the Daytona Regional Chamber Of Commerce and Good Sports Inc. filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Orlando, seeking cancellation of the trademark held by Joe Cool.
Arguments are 1- that the Chamber Of Commerce is since 1995 recognized by the city of Daytona Beach as the official organizer of Bike Week and is the only entity entitled to designate sponsors as official Daytona Beach Bike Week sponsors and has the exclusive right to license the official logo to vendors. 2- that Good Sports has been producing Daytona Beach Bike Week apparel since 1983. Joe Cool Inc has yet to respond to the lawsuit
Not a typo, this custom is called Nascafe Racer, not Nescafe! or Nesscafe!!! It was built by Shaw Speed & Custom the custom division of Brighton, UK based Shaw Harley-Davidson. In 1956 Enfield of India started assembling Bullet motorcycles under licence from UK components, and by 1962 were manufacturing complete bikes. Enfield of India bought the rights to use the Royal Enfield name in 1995. Royal Enfield production, based in Chennai, continues and Royal Enfield is now the oldest motorcycle brand in the world still in production with the Bullet model enjoying the longest motorcycle production run of all time. A beautiful film with no words and no engine sound.
After scaring me (and all of us) by telling me last October that he was too busy, too tired to continue organizing the event, Willie reconsidered and after receiving some sponsorship from Iron Horse Magazine, he will welcome again his friends of the industry at the 2011 Daytona edition of his Chopper Time Show this Thursday March 10th, from 11 am to 4 pm. Readers, I know you pretty well and can guess most of your reactions on any post I publish, especially when featuring extreme custom motorcycles pushing the boundaries of what is perceived as acceptable, aesthetically or technologically. Don’t have to explain why Custom Builder Dana Hallberg called this bike Redonkulous. Like me, he knew that reactions would be split in 2 camps. Those qualifying his work as ridiculous at defined in the Merriam Webster dictionary: silly & unreasonable. And those who will use the word ridiculous as explained in the Urban Dictionary: unbelievable, something at the top level of greatness, insanity, or beauty. The Grand Daddy of all custom bike shows continues the tradition and will open to the public the doors of its 39th edition Saturday March 12th at 9am at the Daytona Lagoon, on Earl street.

Last September – through my Blog – you followed her along the 3325 miles of the Cannonball Endurance Run riding her beloved 1915 Harley-Davidson named Effie from Kitty Hawk, NC to the Pier of Santa Monica, CA. She is the only American woman to have completed such a run. She also authored the best seller book, “American Motorcycle Girls 1900 To 1950” an Amazon best seller in its category. Because of her accomplishments, she is an inductee in the National Motorcycle Hall Of Fame, in the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation and in the Sturgis Hall Of fame.
Yesterday she was in Eustis, Florida at the AMCA Vintage Days. Today she arrived in Daytona. During Bike Week, Cris will be sharing her presence between the Harley-Davidson Women’s Area on Beach Street and the Progressive International Motorcycle Show at the Ocean Center on North Atlantic Avenue. A great opportunity for you to meet with her, talk about women motorcyclists, get her autograph on her books (only at IMS Show), exchange road stories from the Cannonball Run and of course get a close look at Effie, her 1915 3-speed 11J Twin Harley-Davidson. Days and hours after the jump. Continue reading ‘Meet With Motorcycle Personality Cris Sommer-Simmons During Daytona Bike Week’
This year, Bert Baker tells me that he has decided to do things a little bit differently. Instead of hoping to meet with you at his very busy Baker Drivetrain booth in big rallies, Bert is going to your own place. Almost… Bert is embarking on a National Seminar Tour stopping at V-Twin dealerships near the place where you live or work, giving you a rare opportunity to spend time with him (he is a quite funny guy), asking him the trickiest transmissions questions one can ask.
At each Dealer stop Bert will be providing a free drivetrain performance seminar open to the public that will cover the latest products now available from Baker, including the DD6 and DD7 transmissions as well as the F5R and F6R reverse systems. Along with the seminar, to anyone interested, Bert will be offering reverse demos with his own reverse transmission demonstration bike. (ask him to do a reverse burnout, but don’t tell him who suggested!)
I can’t list here all the dates. But the tour starts this weekend in Florida (for evident reason, no booth this year at the Daytona International Speedway), then will go to the west coast. Dealers can contact Baker Drivetrain at 877-640-2004 to schedule a date with Bert. Public can contact their dealer to organize such a seminar. Pick your date after the jump. The Antique Motorcycle Club Of America (AMCA) was founded in 1954 by a group of antique bike fans with the objective the preservation, restoration and operation of old-time motorcycles. It organizes events coast to coast and every year, on the 1st Friday of Daytona Bike Week, the Sunshine Eustis Chapter (Eustis is located in central Florida) hosts a meeting with activities like a bike show, a swap meet and antique bike runs. A good way to enrich your knowledge of the antique bike world, find and trade the gear you need for your own project, hear stories on the machines and people who built the sport of motorcycling. You saw it before in my Blog, but for the 1st time available with a powder coated black contrast on polished aluminum. An opportunity to feature again this Wire-Plus quite “discreet” seat post assembly including billet housing, power control module and key switch. The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) has received a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to collect data over the next two years to improve motorcycle safety. The $70,000 grant will be used to conduct six, one-day safety checkpoints between March 1 of this year and December 31, 2012.
Lt. Colonel Mark McDonough, DPS Deputy Commissioner, said that Georgia saw a sharp increase in the number of fatal crashes involving motorcyclists between 2005 and 2008 as the number of motorcycles registered in the state reached an all-time high. There were 167 motorcycle operators or passengers killed in crashes in 2008. He said Georgia State Patrol launched specialized patrols that included aviation support during the summer months when weekend motorcycle traffic is the heaviest. The enforcement effort along metro Atlanta interstates is focused on motorcycle operators traveling at a high rate of speed, weaving in and out of traffic, traveling in the emergency lane, or driving recklessly around other vehicles. Never buy any book about the Biker Lifestyle without checking the credentials of those authoring it. Doug Barber a.k.a. Q-Ball, the master photographer, and Eddie Sorez Pliska a.k.a. Sorez The Sribe, the highway poet, have shared the road with the old school and hard core bikers during more than 30 years. As patch holders, separately and together, they have been riding, partying, and mixing it up with the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Decades ago, Doug and Eddie chose the path less chosen and they are among the very few having both inside knowledge and talent, respectively photography and poetry, to tell us about our two-wheeled forefathers. But don’t expect this book to be an addition of anecdotical tales about the biker lifestyle in 1 percenter clubs. It’s much richer and deeper than this. Authors took a brand new approach, using camera lens and profound poetry words to build a prism refracting the multitude and most beautiful lights of their culture whose foundation rests on an infallible code of honor.
