This coming week, the motorcycle industry is back in Daytona Beach for the 18th edition of Biketoberfest (official dates are October 14-17) although many bikers make it de facto a week long event starting today October 8th.

And they have good reasons to extend their stay with the city hosting this weekend a Daytona Blues Festival and the spectacular Wings and Waves Air Show (October 9-10) over the shoreline in front of the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort. So, the answer is yes, all traditional biker bars, food courts on Main Street will be open this weekend… Continue reading ‘Are You Doing Biketoberfest Or Hogtoberfest?’

Orange County Choppers And Lawless Industries Break The Quarter Mile World Record For Battery Powered Motorcycle

Legendary drag racer Larry ‘Spiderman’ McBride rode the 363 volt, 4000 amp electric bike assembled by Orange County Choppers to a 7.469, 177 miles per hour quarter-mile pass shattering the existing world record of 7.82 seconds at 168mph. The historical accomplishment was recorded at Virginia Motorsports Park located near Petersburg, VA on September 24, 2010 (video after the jump.) The team says that a speed of 200mph is quite possible with this bike once they manage to find more horsepower to put to the pavement. Next up is the current land speed record for an electric motorcycle recently set at 179 miles per hour this past September at the famous Bonneville Salt Flats in northwestern Utah. The Ergonomics Of Motorcycle Grips.

Ergonomics: the science of designing user interaction with equipment to optimize human well-being and overall system performance.

Well, grips being one of our main points of contact with our motorcycles, they better off being handcrafted to be comfortable without risk of having your hands slipping off of them, fulfilling their main function which is…to grip.

Avon Grips has taken on the challenge of designing and producing such grips without forgetting that appearance, which is also very important to us. Result, a super comfortable line of rubber compound (with or without billet) grips and pegs for many styles of bikes. Continue reading ‘The Ergonomics Of Motorcycle Grips.’

Little Hot Red Shovelhead

Another Harley-Davidson Shovelhead whose destiny was to be reborn as a little Hot Rodder Chopper, but this one keeping its original frame turned into a rigid with 30-degree rake and no stretch (of course cleaned of all its unuseful brackets, while others were added), 74″ engine & 4-speed transmission. It helps to be able to keep title and ride the streets legally… I am not too crazy about the domed Sportster gas tank but the bike features some interesting touches. Action Alert Regarding Motorcycle Only Checkpoints

AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) and the NMA (National Motorist Association) has formally questioned the potential discriminatory and legal nature of Motorcycle Only Checkpoints or Roadblocks administered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Law enforcement officials may defend the program as a safety measure to decrease motorcycle crashes, injuries and fatalities, but here is no proof of its effectiveness. The practice, first modeled in New York State, has drawn the ire of thousands of motorcyclists nationally. NHTSA is now seeking up to five other law enforcement agencies, besides the state of New York, to participate in motorcycle-only checkpoints, and is offering $350,000 in federal funding. The Secret Life Of Arlen Ness

Whatever the way people make reference to him  – the Patriarch, the King Of Choppers or affectionately the Godfather  – nobody can deny the fact that from his Hayward, CA garage  in the mid 60’s where he started building frames and spraying paint on peanut gas tanks  to today where, helped by his family, he manages a custom empire in Dublin, CA,  Arlen Ness  is the man who created the path and always led the way into the future of custom motorcycles building and parts designing. Harley-Davidson Sales Update

September sales numbers are pretty good after 4 consecutive months of decline. Florida, a big Harley market, was very strong last month after being very weak during several years .  Thanks to aggressive promotions inventory is clearing out, prices are stabilizing and 2011 models are well received both by the traditional baby boomer clientele and are more relevant to the youth. In 2010 Harley-Davidson shares have roared to life,  fluctuating between $21.12 and $36.10 and because of the company intense restructuring Wall Street analysts have raised several times their expectations. Year to date HOG stock is up 24.64%.

Chief Entertainment Officer Jay Allen just announced his new line-ip of acts and festivities. Pick your days, your nights, your bands following the schedule after the jump. Nash Motorcycles NC Special Custom Pipes

Because of requests to get their one-off pipes fabricated for their own custom motorcycles, Nash Motorcycles hired Tyler at SikPipes to reproduce their own designs.

Tyler takes these designs and hand makes the pipes to Nash specifications out of 16 gauge tig welded mandrel bent steel. All the pipes are mocked up on a bike for perfect fit before they are shipped out. The pipes that you see here (sorry, no better picture, but a profile in their website) were origially made from their NC Special bike design.

They can be made to fit 84-99 Evos, 2000-up Twin Cams, 57-85 Ironheads, or 86-up Sportsters. Nash can also make them for any other custom applications. They can be ordered in raw steel, chrome, with ceramic coating or exhaust wrap. Nash Motorcycles.

Hell Brutalos. A Shovelhead On Steroids.

Another example of a Harley Shovelhead getting a new life dressed in sport attire and running legally on Steroids. I found it north of the border, precisely in Quebec, where builder Philip Roquebrune first task was to give the old 1981 engine a new look with split rocker boxes and some muscles by boosting its size from 80 to 88 cubic inch, fitting it with a Rivera intake, an S&S E carburetor, a dual Morris Magneto and a reversed starter housing.

Then engine and transmission (both raised) were cradled in a custom single loop frame with 26-degree rake attached to a flat tube swingarm moving on a Penske mono shock, with all chassis treated in industrial machine gray powdercoating. Like many sport bikes, Hell Brutalos rolls on a pair of 17″ Excel spoke wheels dressed with Pirelli tires (120 front, 160 rear) with reliable braking provided by racing specialist Beringer. Open belt system is from BDL and sporty exhaust system comes front Supertrapp. Shovel Hell… Roque Chop Design.

One of a Kind Real Tattoo Motorcycle Solo Seats

I am not talking about seats with tattoo designs, but REAL tattoos on genuine cowhide applied the same way you get a tattoo on your skin, with tattoo ink, electric machines with needles and green soap! Can’t be more authentic than that.

A great idea that I just discovered from a very good professional tattoo artist named Alex Higgins. And since he is a pro he can provide his own original designs or conceive your tattoo on leather the same way he creates tattoo on skin, just flowing your wish list. And if you wear tattoos, maybe it will be a great idea to match your seat to your skin. Just saying… See multiple examples of his original work at Electric Solos.

Harley-Davidson Scoring High After Intensively Courting Women

In a market where new motorcycle registrations have fallen 41 percent since 2007 overall and 36 percent for Harley-Davidson and where the company’s production has sunk to 2001 levels, the company is looking for sources of growth and continues to increase its female-targeted marketing efforts to attract more would-be riders.

Since 2008 model Marisa Miller is a Harley spokesperson (or salesperson) demonstrating her motorcycle skills, burnouts included, in a series of videos to convince women that if she can do it, all women can. This year Harley-Davidson dealers held about 500 “women-only parties” where Harley employees try to demystify many women fears regarding  bikes weight, safety, etc. 27,000 women participated to these events. David Uhl Limited Edition Motorcycle Cannonball Paintings

You love so much the paintings that David Uhl did to reward the Cannonball Motorcycle Run participants that he decided to offer some limited edition of those shown here. He sent me the following words:

“I am honored to say that I was part of the Motorcycle Cannonball Run being in Kittyhawk at the start and Santa Monica at arrival. I have to thank my friend Michael Lichter for helping me produce reference for these pieces, and riding the entire race backwards. My task was challenging but insignificant compared with those who  actually completed the run. By far the most difficult aspect  for me was trying to dream up a composition that reflected the variety of manufacturers that were entered in the run. The piece with Cannonball Baker was possible because the availability of a vintage photo of Steven Wright’s .  I took some artistic license and put him in front of Santa Monica’s historic Pier in 1915.”   Continue reading ‘David Uhl Limited Edition Motorcycle Cannonball Paintings’

American Chopper. Senior VS. Junior VS. Falcon Motorcycles

Since a few days the custom motorcycle industry is buzzing with the story of Paul Teutul Junior wearing front of the cameras since August 12, 2010 in his TV show “Senior vs. Junior” a Paul Junior Designs tee-shirt featuring as front graphic what appears to be the photo of a motorcycle named Bullet built by Ian Barry of Falcon Motorcycles. This tee-shirt is also modeled by Paul Junior and offered for sale online in the category “vintage tees” in Paul Junior Designs website for a price of $25.50.

I had to watch the new Teutul TV show “Senior Against Junior” to get confirmation of all this. Was it possible that Falcon Motorcycles licensed  their Bullet Falcon motorcycle to Paul Jr.? Highly improbable. So, I contacted Falcon and got confirmation from Ian Barry & from his partner Amaryllis Knight that no such authorization to reproduce their motorcycle creation exists. I also contacted Paul Junior asking him to make a statement regarding the use of Bullet on his company tee-shirts. At time of publication, he still didn’t reply. Continue reading ‘American Chopper. Motorcycle Triple Tree Simplicity And Beauty

Can it be a better example of the return of the motorcycle industry to pure organic forms where beauty resides in the minimum form necessary to make a part function correctly?

Over tortured designs with sharp edges made for fake warriors, pirates and gladiators on 2 wheels in need to show their manhood are over. You must admit that some custom motorcycle part designs had reached the point of being ridicule and made your bike (and you?) the object of many jokes. Relief… Continue reading ‘Motorcycle Triple Tree Simplicity And Beauty’
