They can be good actors and looking terrible when riding on the silver screen. Or bad actors hired because they have good riding skills. Very rarely actors are good at both acting and riding.
Steve McQueen. He was a natural, both as actor and motorcycle rider, even acting better near a motorcycle than front of other actors. No, he didn’t jump the barbed wired fence in the movie “The Great Escape”, but I guess it has more to do with his movie insurance contract. Continue reading ‘Best & Worst Bikers On The Silver Screen’
Discretely, Harley-Davidson just confirmed that US bikers can now pre-order one of the 750 limited production XR-120. And if you do it now, it can be ready sitting under your Christmas tree in orange & black like on this picture. You can place your order during the next 3 weeks and no later than December 15. I dig this bike and I think the MSRP (from $10,799 to $11,179) is quite reasonable. A new series in black, and black & silver will be available later with delivery around March 2009. Bet with you that the 1st 750 in orange & black are going to be sought-after collectibles. So, if you have the pocket change, rush to your Harley dealer. The bike is even not yet online in the US Harley-Davidson website
We all know that motorcycles are dangerous. But for your sex life too? A study carried out by doctors in Japan has revealed men that ride motorcycles are at risk of impotence and urinary problems because the vibrations of the engine damage nerves in their penises. The survey of more than 230 motorcyclists who rode their bikes for about 3 hours every weekend found almost 70% had problems gaining an erection or emptying their bladders. The reasons: 1-motorcycle seat undue pressure on the perineum, that unknown area between the anus and the scrotum. The pressure can restrict blood flow. 2- vibrations from the engine caused a decrease in two growth hormones in the bladder and prostate related to bladder relaxation. I didn’t know that such a number of bikers had trouble getting one up. I would be interested what the same survey would find out about the incidence of vibrations on female riders.

I like lawyers only when they are tinkering with motorcycles. So, James Hugh, a lawyer by profession, deserves this post for creating a very cool motorized bicycle paying homage to the racing motorcycles of beginning of the last century. I don’t tell you more because there is a full interesting story about it by going to Wired.
You are looking at a combination camera and multi-tools called “Le Coultre Compass” invented in 1936 by Noel Pemberton Billing (1881-1948), an English aviator, inventor and British Lord.
The phantom camera was used by spies and although I am not one I dream of owning such an art piece. But its rarity made a buyer pay 120,000 British pounds in 2001 just for the pleasure to look at it and play with its complex Swiss army style multi-knives system.
Art at its best will always find a place in my Blog.
The owner of Hell Bent Custom Motorcycles, Ray Shott, shut his doors last week. He said he was forced out not by the tough economic times, but by a City Hall that said this business doesn’t conform to the city’s general plan. Shott said he got a business license in June and two months later city planners came back and said he needed to apply for an additional permit. When Shott refused, the city told him he had to close shop. The motorcycle shop builds and sells custom motorcycles. Some of them sell for $100,000 which could have meant huge tax revenues for the city of San Juan Bautista. But the city manager said money doesn’t talk as loud as the law. Both the city and the shop owner have obtained lawyers.

“Arguably, establishing a base line would take one back to an era when motorcycles became a consumer commodity. Anything earlier should be relegated to “motorcycle pioneering,” a time when the machines were more powered bicycles than motorcycle. Total loss oil systems, gas lamps, and peddle-power assist were the hallmarks of a curiosity rather than a transportation staple. However, with reliability came marketability and with marketability the motorcycle developed into a consumer commodity. And so an industry began to grow up around the “early adopters,” the consumers who were rugged enough to apply motorcycles to their daily lives. Continue reading ‘Getting Back to Biker Basics. During a pretrial conference hearing Tuesday in Viera, Florida Circuit Judge Meryl Allawas designated the trial as a “priority” for her Dec. 1-12 trial docket, with the understanding that it may have to be canceled if defense attorney Greg Eisenmenger or the state’s witnesses cannot move existing schedule conflicts. Police said Lane’s blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit when he crossed a double yellow line to pass several cars near Melbourne Beach, striking Morelock’s motor scooter head-on. Tires are thrown away everyday. Tire rubber is a super-material withstanding acid poured on it, preventing UV light to weaken it, that can receive temperatures of 230 Fahrenheit or 110 c . Although not being obsessively “green”, I think this Tread company does a good job at giving a new purpose to these waste tires. In addition the laptop bags & cases they design from it look pretty good to me. A solid and “feel good” choice. Tread.

Every bike story has a beginning, but to really know how biking gets into your blood you need to start at the very first bike. Matt Flynn’s first bike was a 1959 Schwinn bicycle with a Briggs and Stratton 3hp motor where he mounted the engine on a piece of 2’x4’, using metal brackets and a washing machine pulley bolted to the spokes of the rear wheel. The drive was a direct chain to the engine pulley and his Keds were the brakes. The thrill of that first ride was all it took to hook him for life. Every custom builder “see” how a factory motorcycle can be improved aesthetically and/or technologically. Arlen & Cory Ness just gave a style makeover to the Polaris Victory Vision, the “revolutionary” touring motorcycle powered by a fuel-injected, air-and-oil cooled, SOHC eight-valve 1731cc ‘Freedom’ V-twin engine producing 92 horsepower. The launch of this Signature Vision happens at the time Victory Motorcycles is celebrating its 10th anniversary. The Ness Vision gets a series of cosmetic improvements like custom billet wheels and a leather seat, an adjustable electric windshield, a fancy radio/stereo and a custom paintjob. Victory Motorcycles
Solo bags are making a big come back. Why? Not only because of the retro trend but because real bikers ride a lot and want to make their pit stops as enjoyable as possible. I read again that 1 out of 10 people in America have a job directly or indirectly linked to the automotive industry, the most devastated sector with finance and real estate. And of course it includes a lot of my readers and myself. Every day I am in contact with people feeling and expressing the effects of the worst recession since the big 30’s depression: discouragement, anxiety and also bitterness. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has included the S&S Emissions Certification Lab on its list of testing facilities that are capable of performing the motorcycle exhaust and evaporative emission testing for evaluation of aftermarket devices. This allows S&S to complete the testing necessary for receiving Executive Orders on aftermarket engine and exhaust parts for California vehicles—this would include on highway use motorcycles and other off-road powersports machines and performance assemblies. Now S&S can test all performance products for use in California. The new S&S lab can also test new motorcycles for California emissions. S&S Cycle.
