Scott Del Fava, Brand Manager for V-Twin Vineyards knows that I enjoy the pleasures of a good red wine. He was nice enough to send me a couple of bottles for me to taste his new Zinfandel. Let me tell you first that as a designer I give a 10 to the cool label. Practically, it means that you will not have to hide the bottle by pouring the wine in a carafe before serving it to your best friends. But a seductive label doesn’t make a great wine. A good wine being
about conviviality, I picked Mother’s Day celebration to gather an equal number of men and women whose palate are as educated as mine. For those who don’t know a Zinfandel wine is more enjoyable when served with grilled meats and spicy sauces. So, to be fair, our menu was Pepper Steaks followed by a "Tarte Tatin" (upside-down caramelized apple tart from France) and Camembert Cheese. Of course, I served this V-Twin Zin at room temperature (always at 78 F in my house) to increase the vaporization of aroma compounds, We all agreed that this wine has a lush texture, great vigor and power. We immediately identified berry aromas and flavors of raspberry that typify this red varietal of wine. This V-Twin wine was easy to drink, both smooth and very tasty from meat to cheese. As the saying goes, you never serve a cheap wine to your best friends. Without hesitation, V-Twin Zin can be served to your best buddies in and out the motorcycle community. You can order a case of this fine wine at V-Twin Vineyards. But please remember: don’t drink and ride.

They are my tee-shirts. They are not on sale, never been and will never be. They don’t feature a bold political statement or a humorous slogan. Just my logo (yes I authorize you to use it for your next tattoo). So, why to buy one? Because it’s a classic (they are classy, too) in the V-Twin industry to show that you are in custom bikes. Because I promise it will never go out of style. Because you want to make me happy next time I see you in a rally. Wow, I succeeded to write a post about my own tees. Cyril Huze Logo Tee-Shirts.

Even if like me you are against war and believe that peace can be reached by other means, you know that military motorcycles always look cool. What about this US army (Military Police) bicycle? My son discovered it and would like me to buy it for us….meaning for him. It features a monocoque-aluminum frame with an integrated tank, bombproof wheels built with 12-gauge stainless-steel spokes, fat balloon tires, plus front and rear racks, a canvas saddle bag, fenders and even a generator-powered headlight! Indian Motorcycle would like you to come up with the perfect slogan that will appear on their tee-shirts and banners at high profile events and rallies throughout the U.S. The author of any phrase or slogan used by the company will receive an Indian leather jacket, and if desired his (her) name and photo will appear on their website. I have nothing against asking the public to find a slogan (although it’s normally the job of an advertising agency after a rigorous briefing and an approved creative strategy). But, c’ mon Indian Motorcycle! You state in the competition rules that all entries will become the property of your company and may be used by Indian without limitation. It’s called cessation of all copyrights with no limitation of time, space (geographical location) and media supports (print, electronic, digital, audio visual, etc). Having spent 18 years of my life in advertising handling national blue chip accounts of companies like McDonald’s, Hertz, 3M, Merck, etc. I can tell you that an efficient slogan for a company name like Indian Motorcycle is worth a ton of money and for sure more than a jacket, leather or not. By the way the actual slogan “Pride Of The American Road” is a pretty good one. You have until June 1st to give away an intangible asset to Indian Motorcycle. For sure, it will not be me.

It’s the weekend. More time for you to read and improve your knowledge of Harley-Davidson history.
Harley-Davidson’s origins trace back to the time when four young Americans tried their hands at internal combustion in a tiny wooden shed. The shed was burnt down, but the motorcycle that they built went on to serve 5 different owners. And that was just the beginning. 1901: William S. Harley, age 21, completed a blueprint of an engine designed to fit into a bicycle. 1903: William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson made available to the public the first production Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The bike was built to be a racer, with a 3-1/8 inch bore and 3-1/2 inch stroke. The factory in which they worked was a 10 x 15-foot wooden shed with the words "Harley-Davidson Motor Company" crudely scrawled on the door. 1907: Harley-Davidson Motor Company was incorporated on September 17th. The stock was split four ways between the four founders, and staff size was more than doubled from the previous year to 18 employees. Factory size was doubled as well. 1909: The first V-Twin engine was introduced. The image of two cylinders in a 45-degree configuration would fast become one of the most enduring icons of Harley-Davidson history. 1910: The famed "Bar & Shield" logo was used for the first time. It was trademarked at the US Patent office one year later. 1920: Harley-Davidson became the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world. New Harley-Davidson motorcycles could be purchased from over 2,000 dealers in 67 countries worldwide. 1933: An art-deco "eagle" design is painted on all gas tanks. This marks the beginning of graphic designs on Harley-Davidson motorcycles (with the exception of previously special order-only paint schemes). This styling decision was made in part to stimulate the low sales numbers caused by the Great Depression. 1947: Harley-Davidson begins selling what will become the classic black leather motorcycle jacket. 1953: Harley-Davidson celebrates its 50th Anniversary. An attractive logo is created, depicting a `V’ in honor of the engine which had brought the company so far, with a bar overlaid reading `Harley-Davidson’ and the words, above and below, `50 years-American made. 1960: The Harley-Davidson Topper motor scooter is introduced and is the only scooter platform the company ever produced. 1971: In response to the customizing craze, Harley-Davidson introduces the FX 1200 Super Glide, which combined a sporty front end (similar to that of the XL series) with the frame and power train of the FL series. A new class of motorcycle, the cruiser, is born. 1983: One of Harley-Davidson’s most unique endeavors begins: Harley Owners Group. Fondly referred to as HOG, the Group immediately becomes the largest factory-sponsored motorcycle club in the world. Within six years, HOG membership soared to more than 90,000. By the year 2000, it exceeded 500,000. 1986: The Company was listed on the American Stock Exchange, the first time Harley-Davidson was publicly traded since 1969, the year of the AMF merger. Harley-Davidson executives had in 1981 bought back the company from AMF (American Machine and Foundry). 1993: Harley-Davidson celebrates its 90th Anniversary in Milwaukee with a Family Reunion. An estimated 100,000 people ride in a parade of motorcycles. 2001: The VRSCA V-Rod was introduced for the 2002 model year. Inspired by the VR-1000 racing motorcycle, the V-Rod was Harley-Davidson’s first motorcycle to combine fuel injection, overhead cams and liquid cooling, and delivered 115 horsepower. 2003: Harley-Davidson’s 100th Anniversary celebrated. 2006: Harley-Davidson unveiled plans for an all-new museum in Milwaukee, scheduled for opening in 2008.

If you would have to change only one thing on a motorcycle, or car, to make it look custom right away, it would be the wheels. The choice is wide (playing with words), but very few manufacturers propose custom wheels in the new awesome looking sizes of 21 x 9” and 24 x 4”. I like these new made for tall tires Cutlass Wheels because they are both fancy in their machining and very simple in their design. They are offered by Jolly Roger Customs, a shop with a close relation with Metzeler Tires since 2004 when Mario & Darrian won the Sturgis Metzeler Bike Show with their red Chop-Rod bike. Lucky you, Jolly Rogers Customs have decided to also offer these Cutlass Wheels in any sizes, but like with most very custom parts, they are made to order. Each design is available in both the elongated (12" x 15") and round shape (12" x 13.5") and designed to fit most standard toilet lids. I have never been crazy on trikes. As a matter of fact there are probably less than 5 that I can remember and front of which I would agree to have my picture taken. And it includes this one which was a Discovery Channel Biker Build-Off winner built by Zeel Design. I know that some of you are going to classify it more as a tricycle with an engine (year 06 1200 Sportster) than a trike, but I still would have liked to put this one on my resume. I love the cat
eye gas tank fused into the curvaceous frame (no straight line anywhere to be seen). I admire the one-off aluminum front end with hidden dual RST front brakes, a suspension fitted in the neck and the 3 CNC machined wheels (26” in front dressed in Vee Rubber and 2×15” 200 mm in the rear). I like the Round oil tank discreetly fitted between transmission & rear axle. I appreciate the handlebars (internal clutch & throttle) designed with so much curve that the grips end up facing each other. The copper treatment applied to the rocker boxes, wheels and solid lines is extremely beautiful in contract to the charcoal frame and red pinstriped gas tank. Well, there is much more to see and to say about this "Bobster" trike. Discover more of the very unique style of Michael Long from Zeel Design by going to his website,

Federal regulations state that your bike should be equipped with a horn. They are installed on all factory motorcycles, but on custom bikes? Huh, huh. I know your argument (and mine). When riding, nobody will hear your horn anyway. Loud pipes save lives….Right? But if you want a better looking horn than the factory "bel"l (why it continues to be so ugly), or obliged to have one to be able to title your bike or whatever reason, you can use this chrome mini horn (at 2 1/2" it’s the smallest in the world) that you can dress with a choice of 3 different covers. If you are passionate about bikes you spend a lot of days and nights working in your garage. If she agrees (huh, huh), you should be able to both eat & drink without leaving the new project you are working on. Anyway, I consider that a fridge is must have in a garage or shop. But of course, not any kitchen fridge. It must have the look and the features you need to survive while building non stop the next Easyriders Magazine centerfold. Progressive Group of Insurance Companies, which describes itself as the largest motorcycle insurer in the country, just released a survey of motorcycle owners showing that many don’t understand important policy information. The bikers’ lack of knowledge can cost them thousands if they have a claim. In its survey the company focused on two key facets of a motorcycle insurance policy: physical damage coverage and loss settlement types. Progressive said with many owners interested in individualizing their machines, it was surprising to find that more than half—56 percent—of all those surveyed don’t know how much protection for their bike’s custom parts and accessories comes with their physical damage coverage. Of 44 percent surveyed with more than $3,000 worth of custom parts and accessories on their motorcycles, 51 percent didn’t purchase additional coverage. The physical damage portion of a motorcycle policy generally includes comprehensive and collision and custom parts and accessories coverage. Most motorcycle policies with comprehensive and collision include some custom parts and accessories coverage free with the option to purchase more. The insurer added that comprehensive, collision and custom parts and accessories are optional coverage and are subject to a deductible amount. Progressive’s survey also found that more than 45 percent of motorcyclists surveyed didn’t know which loss settlement type—actual cash value, agreed value or stated amount—their policy provides, and 68 percent of those confuse the benefits of agreed value and stated Amount settlement types. The company said many policyholders mistakenly believe that stated amount guarantees a pre selected total loss settlement amount in writing in the event a bike is declared a total loss or is stolen and not recovered. Insurance companies generally do not offer all three loss settlement types—instead, the loss settlement type available to policyholders is based on the type of motorcycle they own, Progressive said. According to the insurer, if a policyholder owns a mass-produced motorcycle that has a resale value generated by a third party like the N.A.D.A. appraisal guides or Kelley Blue Book, they will generally be offered an actual cash value (ACV) settlement option. This means that, in the event of a total loss or if their bike is stolen and not recovered, they will generally be paid the ACV, less their deductible amount. Progressive pointed out that if a customer owns a custom or classic motorcycle with certain characteristics, they might find that some companies won’t insure their bike. But, it said, many insurers that specialize in motorcycles will insure these types of bikes and will generally offer one of two loss settlement types: agreed value or stated amount

From Fox News. Sandra Bullock wants court protection from a fan who was arrested for investigation of trying to run down her husband outside their home. Bullock, 42, filed a request for a restraining order on Tuesday in Orange County Superior Court, asking a judge to ban Marcia Diana Valentine from contacting or coming within 500 yards of the actress, her husband Jesse James or his three children. The ban would cover the couple’s home and workplaces, and the children’s school or child care site. Valentine, 45, was arrested last month for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon. She remained free on $25,000 bail pending a May 22 court hearing. No charges had been filed as of Thursday, as prosecutors continued to review the case. Valentine was arrested after the incident that occurred when Bullock asked her to leave the couple’s home in Sunset Beach, authorities said. James was not hurt. Valentine had made several previous visits to the home, where the couple once found her lying in front of their garage door, authorities said.

In a previous post called “But Where Is The Battery” I talked about the many ways you could hide a battery on a custom motorcycle. There is another way to solve the battery aesthetic issue. If you can’t hide it, show it in a very nice way. A good example, if you don’t fabricate yourself, are these billet aluminum boxes in 2 versions -smooth or with holes- with a solid or stainless mesh top cover. In it, you will fit batteries 3 5/16” x 6 7/8” or smaller, of course. They are sold in machine or polished finish and include all necessary hardware. You can install them anywhere you want in horizontal or vertical position (if you use a dry cell battery, but not all dry cell batteries) and will look extremely good on old school bikes. They were designed by Jeff “The Deal" Delisle at Delisle Custom Products. .

I will not be at the next Legend Of The Motorcycle Concours D’Elegance from May 4 to 6 and it bothers me. I know about this event through friends who were there last year for the 1st edition. And it’s really one special event I want to attend. It’s all about the rare motorcycles being exhibited, the place (the manicured lawns of the Ritz Carlton at Half Moon Bay, just south of San Francisco), and the 5000 motorcycle aficionados coming to celebrate classic motorcycle history, pre-1976. The exhibition was conceived by motorcycle lovers Jared Zaugg and Brooke Roner, a couple from San Francisco who were inspired by the success of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the Monterey peninsula’s annual four-wheeled beauty pageant to determine the best-restored classic cars, and the success of “The Art of the Motorcycle,” an exhibit hosted by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum during the summer of 1998. The Legend Of The Motorcycle Concours D’Elegance will showcase more than 300 classic motorcycles, including three legendary brands — Vincent, Henderson and Excelsior. Visitors will be able admire Rollie Free’s Vincent HRD Black Lightning, which he rode in September 1948 on the Bonneville Salt Flats at over 150 miles per hour to break the world speed record. The Concours itself will have a variety of winners — including the recipient of the God of Speed bronze trophy, which was designed by renowned sculptor Jeff Decker for the event. First place, as well as other prizes, will be based on judging set by several international standards, such as original condition and historically accurate restoration. Other award categories include the 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award, which will be presented to Willie G. Davidson for his invaluable contribution to the world of motorcycling. The Steve McQueen Award judged by Chad McQueen and a Hollywood celebrity for the motorcycle that best represents the “king of cool. The Elvis Award judged by a musician for the entry that best represents the King of Rock and Roll. The Industry Award judged by motorcycle executives and the People’s Choice Award. Legend of the Motorcycle will also host an auction with proceeds will be donated to charity. The event is open to the public. Tickets are $50 per person ($65 on the day of the event), and include access to all of the events and children are welcome. Imagine riding your bike with one hand (usually the right one) and holding a cell phone with your other hand while talking to your girlfriend who just called to say that she is back to her mother. Yep, it’s what I saw the other day in my hometown of Boca Raton, FL. The guy was riding a chopper while having a conversation on his cellular phone, trying to control the bike as much as he could. What about riding while sending or reading text messages? I heard that some do this and these idiots even brag about it! Do we need each state to pass laws prohibiting the use of cellular phones on motorcycles? No. Motorcyclists should be able to discipline themselves. I always turn off my phone while riding, and when driving, if I know that the conversation can be long, complex, requires all my attention (technical questions, interviews, etc) or if I need to take notes, I don’t hesitate to stop in a safe place. Please, do not take chances and prevent our law makers of passing a law banning cellular phones on motorcycles. They should not have to.

Individuals and garage builders heard about it or saw it on TV being used by pro-builders. An English Wheel is the basic tool we absolutely need to form and shape flat sheets of metal such as mild steel or aluminum to create our own gas tanks and fenders. When I meet semi-professionals on the show tour they often ask me if they should buy one. And I tell them that if the principle of thinning and shaping the metal between the top wheel (rolling wheel) and the lower wheel (anvil wheel) is relatively simple, mastering the apparatus to form the desired smooth curves is an art requiring a lot of experience. So, except if you intend to build more than one custom bike or plan to become a pro, don’t buy one. Use the services of a good fabrication shop working under your control. But if you absolutely need one to show your creativity in metal, here is a good address. Northridge Tools.
