Like A Harley Rider In A Candy Store

The big news in the 2013 Harley-Davidson lineup may not be the new Street Bob, CVO Breakout or CVO Road King, but the Hard Candy Custom™ colors (Lucky Green Flake, Coloma Gold, Red) that you can now order as original equipment paint.

Harley got inspired again by custom builders who during the last 10 years leaned towards this flakes paint treatment of the late 60’s to enhance the old-school cool of their new projects inspired by the past. I must recognize that Harley is the first major manufacturer offering such candy color options as standard choice. A good marketing approach because Harley clients starting with a factory candy paint job and wishing to customize will be “obliged” to order from their dealers to find perfectly color matching  Harley-Davidson® Genuine Motor Accessories® parts and accessories. Harley already announced a very soon to be released matching candy theme apparel line…

The three production Hard Candy Custom colors are created by applying tinted flakes, each more than seven times the size of metal flake used in typical production paint, over a black base coat. The flake is then covered with multiple layers of clear coat, which combined with hand sanding produces a finished surface with extraordinary depth. Each Hard Candy Custom paint set will be finished by Harley with graphics specific to the motorcycle model, and features a special Hard Candy Custom logo. See video after the jump. New 2013 CVO Road King. First Road King With Factory-Installed Audio System.

The CVO™ Road King® combines the largest displacement V-Twin engine offered by Harley-Davidson (Twin Cam 110″) with the innovative Vented Wind Splitter windshield and the first audiosystem offered on a Road King® model, for unmatched touring performance, comfort and custom exclusivity. Production will be limited to approximately 3,650 units assembled at the Harley-Davidson Vehicle Operations facility in York, Pa.

The CVO™ Road King® is built on the innovative Harley-Davidson® Touring chassis, based on a single-spar, rigid backbone frame and a stout swingarm developed to withstand the demands of long-haul touring riders and today’s more powerful engines.

The first factory-installed Road King audio system includes a 200-watt amplifier and an interface module for an included 8GB Apple® iPod® controlled by buttons on the handlebar. The system drives two 5×7-inch speakers with bridged tweeters located on the saddlebag lids, and two 5.25-inch speakers with bridged tweeters mounted in the fairing lowers.

The new detachable Vented Wind Splitter windshield was developed by Harley-Davidson and tested in the Wichita State University wind tunnel to relieve low pressure behind the windshield and significantly reduce buffeting at the rider position. A vane within the vent should be adjusted to match air flow to the rider’s height.

A low-profile console holds a combination speedometer/tachometer with programmable back-light colors. Other CVO Road King features include a chrome billet-style extended reach heel shifter, Mirror Chrome Agitator Custom wheels, extended saddlebag bottoms with a custom fascia and LED lighting, a new chromed handlebar with an ergonomic bend, and Slipstream Collection hand and foot controls. Joke Of The Week

A newlywed farmer and his wife were visited by her mother, who immediately demanded an inspection of the place. The farmer had genuinely tried to be friendly to his new mother-in-law, hoping that it could be a friendly, non-antagonistic relationship. All to no avail though, as she kept nagging them at every opportunity, demanding changes, offering unwanted advice, and generally making life unbearable to the farmer and his new bride.

While they were walking through the barn, during the forced inspection, the farmer’s mule suddenly reared up and kicked the mother-in-law in the head, killing her instantly. It was a shock to all no matter their feelings toward her demanding ways. At the funeral service a few days later, the farmer stood near the casket and greeted folks as they walked by.  Continue reading ‘Joke Of The Week’

Hells Angels Sue U.S. Over visas And Criminal Designation. The Hells Angels motorcycle club is suing to protest a federal policy barring its foreign members from the U.S. and is also is fighting its federal designation as a “known criminal organization.”Lawyers for the Los Angeles-area-based group describe its membership as composed of loosely associated charters, “made up of motorcycle enthusiasts who have joined to ride motorcycles together, organize social events, fundraisers, parties and motorcycle rallies. The group is asking for a temporary injunction, allowing foreign members to be granted visas to travel to the United States. 2013 Harley-Davidson Street Bob®. Restyled As A Bobber. Kind Of …

Based on the Harley-Davidson® Dyna® platform, the 2013 Street Bob® is a stripped-down and restyled rowdy bobber meant to express the pure essence of motorcycling. A brawny bike with essential equipment and not much more. The Street Bob also serves as a great starting point for the rider intent on personal customization, which is now why it can also be personalized through H-D1™ factory customization. This web-based program allows customers to select factory-installed options that personalize fit, function and style in more than 2,000 combinations.

“This bike is for the owner who would order a muscle car with the biggest motor and no radio. As part of this restyle, we cleaned off the rear fender, ditched the battery box trim, and bolted on a classic round air cleaner cover. The goal is to create the elemental Big Twin that a customer can define as his own. Then we selected an array of options for H-D1 that allow the owner to take the Street Bob in many different stylistic directions.” said Harley-Davidson Styling Manager Tony Pink.

The defining elements of the Street Bob are retained for 2013. A solo seat, chopped rear fender, and mini ape-hanger handlebar give this motorcycle an unmistakable profile. New styling features include a black Twin Cam 96™ powertrain with highlighted details, blacked-out front end, clean rear fender with combination stop/tail/turn lighting and side-mount license plate, a round air cleaner and new scallop graphics in a two-tone paint option. New 2013 Harley-Davidson CVO™ Breakout Model

You will identify it right away with its new paint process and brilliant “turbine” wheels. This new, limited-production Softail® model from Harley-Davidson Custom Vehicle Operations™ combines the power of the Twin Cam 110B™ engine with a level of custom detailing usually not seen on a production motorcycle. Curbside, the Breakout a proud rake and dazzling finish. On the road, the CVO Breakout is a fast chrome-plated fst punching the air. The Breakout is intended to project a tough attitude, according to Harley-Davidson Styling Manager Kirk Rasmussen.

To create a compact, muscular profile fenders have been chopped to the legal limit so more tire rubber is revealed at both ends of the bike. The same principle is applied to the shaved down console and the use of braided steel lines for vent tubes. This gives us a larger canvas for paint and finishes, an essential element of the CVO formula.

The CVO Breakout is equipped with the Twin Cam 110B engine, a 110-cid V-Twin that pumps out 112 ft. lbs. of peak torque to give the CVO Breakout the best power-to-weight ratio of any current CVO model. The CVO Breakout takes production motorcycle paint to a new level of true customization. Two paint schemes feature hand-polished steel sections on the fuel tank and fenders. A third paint option incorporates hand-laid lace stenciling. Continue reading ‘New 2013 Harley-Davidson CVO™ Breakout Model’

Indian Scout Restyling

Disclosure. The Indian Scout is at the top of my list of preferred motorcycles and it always has been. Something I can’t explain but that many around the world share with me. And among them custom builder Jesse Bassett at The Gasbox who re-designed and built this gorgeous custom Indian started out as a 1940 Military model but restyled with the late 20’s Scout design. For sure Charles B. Franklin, the original Indian Scout designer, would be very happy to know that his work, almost 90 years later, continues to inspire and motivate so many young builders

Jesse told me that he got started on this project because his girlfriend informed him that the 2012 Quail Exhibition in Carmel, CA would this year celebrate the Indian Motorcycles brand. Jesse started planning the type of Indian bike he wanted to build for the show, and lucky him, found a very rusted 1940 741 Indian frame on eBay. From the day he received this frame, it was an almost non-stop race of 3 months (7 days a week) and 18 hours (he kept track) until he was able to fire his bike and load it on a railer on April 29, 2012 in direction of the Quail Lodge in Carmel.   Continue reading ‘Indian Scout Restyling’

Harley-Davidson hasn’t survived this long just by making cool bikes. The challenge is not only the bikes and the economy, but the ever-changing image of the rider. Katherine Wintsch from the Martin Ad Agency and founder of “The Mom Complex” gives you an interesting analysis of this Harley-Davidson women campaign. She writes “They’re avoiding the badass biker chick and the woman as paranoid passenger. She’s not gripping onto her man who’s driving…” What is your take on this ad?
