Arlen Ness KO Raked Triple Trees for 21″ and 23″ Front Wheel Baggers

At the time when custom builders realized that a 21″ or 23″ front wheel installed on a Bagger was considerably improving the look of a tourer, they had no other choice than to cut, stretch and re-weld the frame neck to be able to properly fit these over-stock sizes. Always a risky business if you are not a pro trained at modifying frames and a time consuming operation.

Hence the need for a Bagger raked triple tree … Arlen Ness launches the KO or “Kick Out” triple tree kit allowing the use of 21″ & 23″ front wheels by adding 11-degree rake to the bike while still maintaining the proper rake and trail for exceptional handling.  No cutting and welding necessary. Antilock Brakes. Is It The Most Valuable Motorcycle Feature?

It is still one of the most controversial topics regarding motorcycle safety. Are motorcycles factory equipped with antilock brakes less prone to create fatal crashes than without? The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety re-affirms that antilock brakes for motorcycles are working as designed to reduce the chances of crashing, removing some of the risk that comes with riding on 2 wheels. In a new study, the Insurance Institute indicates that motorcycles with antilocks versus without are 37 percent less likely to be in fatal crashes per 10,000 registered vehicle years. Bolstering this finding is a separate analysis by the affiliated Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) of insurance claims filed for damage to motorcycles. Bike models with antilocks have 22 percent fewer claims for damage per insured vehicle year (a vehicle year is 1 vehicle insured for 1 year, 2 insured for 6 months, etc.) than the same models without antilocks.

I must mention the following: The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is a U.S. non-profit organization funded in 1959 by insurers. It represents the interests of 80 insurance companies from which it receives its funding. Critics such as the American Motorcyclist Association have suggested that the IIHS sometimes seeks to influence legislation aimed at making insurance companies more profitable, rather than benefitting the public interest. The Insurance Institute released this demonstration video to show how effective ABS can be.

Most motorcycles have separate brake controls, one for the front wheel, and one for the rear. So if the brakes are hit too hard or with the wrong front/rear distribution, a wheel can lock and cause the bike to lose control and eventually fall. Alternatively, if the brakes are squeezed too gently, the bike may not stop in time to avoid a crash. ABS can work in two ways–reduce brake pressure if a lockup is impending or increase pressure again when the bike is under control. It allows the rider to intuitively apply the brakes with full force, without holding back due to concerns of locking up a wheel and alleviate a split-second judgment call. Harley-Davidson Dealers To Offer Seat And Windshield Demos

As part of its “Upgrade Your Ride” Spring promotion, Harley-Davidson® is introducing a new Seat and Windshield Demo Program that enables a rider to visit a participating Harley-Davidson dealer and sample these components on their own motorcycle. By utilizing the demo programs, riders can take the guess-work out of creating a perfect-fitting ride. A rider can try several seats and see how each affects the style and ergonomics of his or her motorcycle, or demo windshields at different heights to gauge the effect of each on comfort and visibility, all with no charge or obligation. The seats and windshields used in the demo program are marked with “demo” labels.

The program will begin in early May at participating dealers. Approximately 80 percent are participating. To find a dealer near you, call (800) 588-2743, and ask if they are offering the Seat and Windshield Demo program. Dealers will have a minimum of four and as many as 26 different popular accessory seat styles available for demo on a variety of Harley-Davidson models, including the Sundowner™, Tallboy®, Reach®, Reduced Reach, Super Reduced Reach, Signature Series®, Hammock and Road Zeppelin® seats. Daytona Best Of Show Ultra Radical Custom Motorcycle

In each bike show, a couple of custom motorcycles being unveiled make you scratch your head. What’s that? How does it work? Is it rideable? Three weeks ago, the judges of the 40th Daytona Rat’s Hole Bike Show were won over by this new creation called “Pipe Dreams” and gave it a Best Of Show for its originality and unusual engineering.

First, this very wicked steel creation is unconventional because it can still be called a motorcycle although it’s rolling on 4 wheels., 3 in the rear and front. Second, because both rear and front end setups must have been a big engineering headache. Surprisingly, Steve Galvin – the man behind this project – is not a “professional” builder, but work at home in his garage in his spare time, typically creating one extreme custom bike per year and doing all fabrication himself. His full time job? He is a recording musician specializing in music for the toy industry and told me that when you see one of those stuffed animals at the drugstore with sounds and music in it, it’s probably his recording…Nobody better than Steve himself to explain what sparked him to do such a creation and what was the process. Show Me Your Office. Mike Corbin.

From designing an extensive line of motorcycle seats, fiberglass body kits, saddlebags and accessories for which he is known worldwide, to developing electric-powered vehicles before everybody else (remember the V-Twin powered 3-wheel named “the Merlin” and the single-seat enclosed “Sparrow Motorcycle”?), to furniture and even fitness equipment (at the time endorsed by bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger), Mike Corbin’s life is full of a multitude of trials, experimentations and eventually triumphs.

An AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame inductee, he is an inventor (Mike and his companies have been awarded over 70 mechanical patents, trademarks and copyrights) turned businessman (he followed Harvard courses) and is well known in the industry for his ability to innovate, to adapt to new economic environments and to reinvent both himself, his products and companies.

In his vast office at the Corbin Pacific 80,000 square-foot facility in Hollister, California Mike Corbin displays some reminders, souvenirs, memorabilia of his long and rich career in the motorcycle industry. Like most pure designers and inventors, Mike likes to keep his office uncluttered. When he is not reading my news on his Apple iMac (had to plug this one…) the CEO of one of the world’s largest motorcycle seat and accessory manufacturers can contemplate his beautifully laid out wall of patents, front of him when sitting at his desk the artwork “Heart & Soul” by John Francis Marsh, a tribute to the development and launch of the Sparrow Electric Car by Corbin Motors.

When very young, Corbin started tinkering on motorcycles on a 1958 Triumph Bonneville and later a 1964 Norton Atlas. His first Snap-On toolbox (refinished by his in-house painter) lives in his office. A Bonneville hat is a reminder that in 1974 Mike experimented with electric motorcycles and built a bike that set a land speed record of 165.387 mph on the Utah Salt Flats. In 2011 at the BUB Bonneville speed trials she broke a new world record in the 1000 cc Production Class (with very limited modifications), reaching an average speed of 200,137 mph on her Honda CBR 1000.

New Boom Audio High Performance Bagger Speakers For Harley Electra Glide

The new Boom! Audio High Performance Bagger Speakers replace original Harley-Davidson equipment speakers for improved volume and clarity. The Fairing Front (P/N 76000256, $159.95) and Tour-Pak Rear (P/N 76000257, $159.95) are high-performance replacements for the stock speakers on 1998-2005 Electra Glide® models. A two-way speaker design with a separate bass and midrange driver and grill-mounted tweeter provides improved high-frequency response that helps cut through the road and wind noise. Increased speaker sensitivity provides louder output than Original Equipment speakers at the same volume setting, resulting in reduced distortion for improved clarity at speed. Dusty Jewels. A 70″s Off-Road Motorcycle Exhibition

On April 3, 2012 The Antique Automobile Club of America Museum will open a “motorcycle exhibit named “Dusty Jewels: Off-Road Motorcycles of the 1970s.” featuring more than 20 motorcycles that tell the story of off-road motorcycles of the 1970′s. This period was a high water mark” of interest in motorcycling before the decline in motorcycle sales in the 1980s and 1990s. A unique variety of manufacturers worldwide supplied the US with motorcycles that were both functionally cutting-edge and aesthetically very different from one another.

This decade was marked by the invention of long-travel suspension, classic frame geometry, and the development of the lightweight two-stroke engine. These factors together contributed to the creation of the first modern off-road motorcycles whose basic design is still utilized today. 1970s motorcycles also reflected design trends from the various countries of manufacture. Machines were truly varied in their execution, and most of this innate character could be traced to aspects of the cultures that made them. Continue reading ‘Dusty Jewels. Moto Guzzi Cafe Racer. Bella Machina.

Based on the Motto Guzzi Griso 1200 8-valve engine, this custom Cafe Racer creation is the work of Italian Filippo Barbacane following an idea launched by entrepreneur Alessandro Loviselli. A completely new Cafe Racer style bodywork required heavy modification of the stock frame. Gas tank is made out of aluminum, front suspension is from Marzocchi, premium rear mono shock from Bitubo and wheels in forged magnesium, model “Cattiva”, from OZ Racing. Encouraged by the reaction of the public and a big trophy received during last January Verona Motor Expo’s bike show, both men now try to launch a limited series under the brand name “Ipothesys”. The American Motorcycle Girl’s Cannonball Diary by Cris Sommer Simmons

In September 2010, 50 riders participated to an historical 16-day and 3300 mile coast to coast ride on pre-1916 motorcycles. Among them, the only American woman was Cris Sommer Simmons riding “Effie”, her beloved 1915 Harley-Davidson. After a grueling 2-week endurance ride, only 37 riders arrived in Santa Monica and Cris was among them and took 2oth place.

The American Motorcycle Girl’s Cannonball Diary is her very special story from November 2009 when she decided to prepare for the event to September 26, 2010 when she crossed the finishing line onto the Santa Monica Pier.

Riding cross-country on an antique motorcycle presents many challenges, mentally, physically and, of course, mechanically. Cris won all these challenges, before the endurance run when preparing her machine with master antique motorcycle restorer Steve Huntzinge, then on the road supported her Effie Team (Athena Ransom, Toast Boyd, Laura Klock) and of course by her husband Pat Simmons. Buit-It-Yourself Cafe Racer. $5000.

During all these years of economic recession, Builders Ryan Rajewski and Casey Stevenson at California Ryca Motors have found a very profitable niche. Offering a CS-1 Kit costing between $2,600 to $3,000 which converts a Suzuki S40 -aka Suzuki Savage – into a lightweight, reliable, and fuel efficient Cafe Racer.

All parts are included and the duo claims that in one year they have sold 300 of these kits with 95% of them being built by customers in their garage in less than 48 hours! You just need a used Suzuki 540 (average price with low miles is 1200/$1500 and eBay is full of them) and some hand tools. Instructions included via downloadable PDF and no welding required!

American Suzuki Motor Corp. was so impressed with the assembled kits that they are actively promoting them to the brand’s 950 U.S. dealers as a showroom lure to increase sales… Strong of their success, Ryan Rajewski and Casey Stevenson are now working on street tracker, scrambler, and bobber kits to be released very soon. Can anyone do better for a total assembled motorcycle costing less than $5000. Ryca Motors.

Judging The New Victory Judge Model And Zach Ness Custom Version

The challenge. Not only to road test the 2013 Victory Judge model but also its first custom version. the NessCafe built by Zach Ness. Launched by Polaris with the slogan “The New American Muscle Bike” I wanted to know how much muscle the factory model really got and how much extra excitement  Zach’s custom version could bring to  me.

Meeting was set during Daytona Bike Week at the Victory Motorcycles display on International Speedway. There I got a full briefing on the Judge model from Victory executives Robert and Manny Pandya, then met with Lloyd Greer from Lloyds Motor Works, the motor guru who fully rebuilt the stock engine to turn NessCafe into a true Cafe Racer champion. The Judge is the first non-tourer model released by Polaris since 2006, a descendant of the Vegas, and an important step for Victory to impose its brand in the cruisers segment.

The Judge share several traits and parts with the Vegas, but a first glance it’s a much more compact bike ((64.8″ wheelbase) with strong sport-influenced styling. Although overall look is modern, in black (my choice), with very few chrome parts, racing side panels waiting to be customized with the number of your choice or whatever, 16″ five-spoke wheel (130 mm front, 140 mm rear) and Dunlop Elite II tires with raised white lettering, it will not scare away all those infatuated with the retro look. I smiled when I observed that on the Judge the headlight nacelle looks like belonging to the bike (wink at the Victory designers), and became very impatient to straddle the bike when it was mentioned to me that the low center of gravity and the 106″ 50-degree Freedom engine (1731 cc) serving 113 ft-lbs of torque would help me escape the Daytona traffic and find freedom of the road much faster that what I could expect…

With the promise from Zach Ness that we will switch bikes before returning to the Victory display, we both cranked our bikes for a few miles of cruising beyond Daytona city limits, then for many more miles of sport riding to test our bikes respective passing power… First impression on any model is riding comfort and position. Seat is low (just under 26″ to the ground) and very comfortable, Being 6 foot tall with long arms, bars position put me more in a cruising that in a sport position, but those shorter than me can expect a slightly forward and more sporty stance. Although the 2-into-1 exhaust styling from Cobra would not be my first choice, cruising is done with the music of a quite pleasant growl, something remarkable for an EPA sound emissions approved system. Clutch is firm but doesn’t require hand strength. Shifting clunk is somewhat loud (you will not miss a gear) but mid-mounted controls setup makes shifting the 6-speed transmission extremely easy, smooth and precise. While confronted with long traffic red lights and contrary to what I experience with many other factory bikes, I never failed to find neutral.

When it was time to test throttle response I found acceleration quite outstanding for a 660-pound bike. Playing catch up with Zach Ness racing NessCafe on the open road, I had to flex the Judge muscles and it was not too difficult to re-join him, up to the point where he was not exceeding a slow speed for him of 90 mph (beyond is another story, more later.) And when Zach stopped to find another open space direction I had the opportunity to test the Judge brakes. Separately or together, the Judge setup, a rear 300mm disk/2-piston rear caliper and a single 300 mm/4-piston front caliper handle their tasks correctly, without hesitation. And doing so, I applaud the fact that only a front left single disc necessary, it makes the Judge front end look much more appealing. That day, riding only on very smooth Florida roads I was unable to evaluate the bike behavior on uneven tracks. Continue reading ‘Judging The New Victory Judge Model And Zach Ness Custom Version’

Motorcycle Insurance Fraud

Supposedly 10 cents of every $1 in insurance premiums goes toward payment of fraudulent claims. So, all my readers being honest, we all pay 10% more that we should to insure our motorcycles.

John Egan, a reader who is the Managing Editor of Bankrate Insurance, forwarded to me the story of Peter Jay Raposa of Ellenboro, North Carolina who in 2006 allegedly buried his 2005 custom Harley-Davidson on his property, then filed a claim for stolen motorcycle with his insurance company Nationwide. Claim was settled with a $25,000 payment to the lien holder, First Citizens Bank in North Carolina, and a $4,000 payment to Raposa.

Zero Engineering Type 9 Softail

Well known for its vintage styling, no gadget or chrome approach in building rigid custom motorcycles, Zero Engineering style has often been imitated. But now that the company is offering an exclusive multi-link frame offering a rear suspension system, Zero regains a distinct advantage versus its direct “old school” competition. Although I already featured this ‘suspension articulated swingarm” system, I thought you would be interested in seeing the complete bike so-called the Type 9 model, with its final list of proposed components. Still looking like a rigid, but offering the equivalent comfort of a Softail.  Continue reading ‘Zero Engineering Type 9 Softail’

Show Me Your Office. Jesse James.

With Jesse, I start a new series called “Show Me Your Office” Simply because I know that most of you wonder how it looks and feels to be in the office of the movers and shakers of the industry. You will be surprised or not. But if you are, I can tell you for sure that all offices of  my fellow custom builders, painters, part vendors, engravers, photographs, moto journalists, etc are a pure reflection of their deep personality. A personality that you should have been able to apprehend through their work. If not, just look at the pictures, furniture, memorabilia, sticker statements, etc and learn more about your favorite person of the custom motorcycle industry.

Not surprisingly, Jesse has several desks. His toolboxes. So, he is always only a few steps away from his lifts and machines. In addition to the necessary music equipment (via a Classic iPod and a pair of speakers) to color mood each step of a custom build, a collection of stickers with “philosophical” statements, pictures of his best friends, black & white pinup posters, Virgin Mary effigies and statues, a lot of souvenirs from around the world whose significance can only be explained by Jesse …if he wants to explain to you.

What you may not know is that Jesse James enjoys a couple of cigars every day. He has also been seen puffing pipe. Yep, it’s there on the “desk.” Via his blackberry and Apple iPad Jesse is permanently in contact with the rest of the world, and as a matter of fact, from wake up to sleep, is a heavy broadband user, Twittering and FaceBooking all day long his mood, pictures of his work in progress, of his kids, of his races, of his dogs, of everything of interest for him and for you. Occasionally he will also Ping on iTunes his social network followers about songs he listens to at the shop and recommends.
