Erik Buell Today.

On October 15, 2009 Harley-Davidson announced that production of Buell motorcycles were immediately discontinued. The economy started to tank in 2008 and in 2009 sales of new motorcycles crashed. At the time, Harley-Davidson CEO Keith Wandell statement to the media was “The fact is, we must focus both our effort and our investment on the Harley-Davidson brand, as we believe this provides an optimal path to sustained, meaningful, long-term growth”. In a press conference a couple of hours later, a very emotional Erik Buell confirmed the sad news he received from Harley-Davidson. What was not disclosed at the time and that only Erik knew was that he  had lost it all, even the rights to the Buell Motorcycle name. A musician, Erik turned to his guitar for therapy, then decided to start a new independent venture called Erik Buell Racing (EBR)

From the liquidation sale of Buell Motorcycles Company, Erik kept a small building in East Troy, a 40-minute drive from Milwaukee. Erik Buell Racing is financed by his own money and other small private investments. To help cash flow, some income comes from design consulting jobs for other companies. Erik is now looking for a $20 million investment to finance development and production The goal with Erik Buell Racing is to focus on being an American manufacturer of race bikes and parts to challenge foreign manufacturers with invention and intellectual property. To go beyond by doing radical things that the rest of the racing world has never done. Last summer at the Superbike series in Lexington, Ohio, Buell debuted a pro racing version of the 1190RS, the first offering from his new company. The rider finished a respectable 10th. Later, at the German Superbike Championship, an early customer entered with an EBR bike and won, beating out established competitors on Ducatis, BMWs and KTMs… Continue reading ‘Erik Buell Today.’

Motorcycle Industry Honors J&P Cycles Founder John Parham

For his long-time dedication to the sport of motorcycling, John Parham, founder of J&P Cycles and president of the National Motorcycle Museum Board of Directors, received the Don J. Brown Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2012 Dealer Expo and American V-Twin Dealer Show on Friday, Feb. 17.

Parham, a life-long motorcycle enthusiast, founded J&P Cycles with his wife Jill in 1979. What started as a small Harley-Davidson motorcycle repair shop in a dirt-floor garage on the outskirts of Anamosa, Iowa, has grown into the world’s largest catalog retailer of aftermarket motorcycle parts and accessories.

The company produces one of the largest mail-order catalogs in the industry, with this year’s print edition featuring 1,064 pages that list more than 40,000 motorcycle parts and accessories. A restorer of vintage motorcycles since his youth, Parham in 2001 relocated the National Motorcycle Museum from Sturgis, S. D., to Anamosa. Today the museum displays more than 320 motorcycles from around the world and countless pieces of artwork and memorabilia in a 36,000-square-foot facility. Harley-Davidson Tri Glide Suspension Upgrade By Progressive Suspension.

The Tri Glide, the remaining trike model from Harley-Davidson, is evidently a very heavy vehicle facing unique handling challenge due to the loads generated by the steering forces. Harley Tri Glide factory forks are those of a two-wheeler and cornering dynamic feels much more like when you drive a four wheel vehicle.

So, the Progressive Suspension engineers started to work on these issues and were able to think out a suspension solution to improve the oem chassis/suspension setup .  They are now able to offer a pair of high pressure gas charged Monotube damper cartridges with progressive rate springs tuned to the weight challenges (it’s heavy!) of the Tri Glide. The result is reduced brake dive, improved bottoming control and increased front end cornering grip, all in a tidy cartridge package that’s designed to last the life of your Harley trike. The Sharpie Paint Job Victory Judge Motorcycle

A new trend is to use sharpies to “paint” all types of vehicles. Look at this very cool “sharpie paint job” on a 2013 Victory Judge motorcycle created by a young artist graphics designer named Melissa Breitenfeldt. This project was realized for the 2012 Australian Motorcycle Expo where Victory will display this one-off project. Artwork theme? Of course, Blind Justice…

Joke Of The Week

Last year I replaced all the windows in my house with that expensive, double-panel energy efficient kind. And today, I got a call from the contractor who installed them. He was complaining that the work had been completed a whole year ago and I still hadn’t paid for them.

Hellloooo,………..just because I’m blonde doesn’t mean that I am automatically stupid. So, I told him just what his fast talking sales guy had told me last year, “that in ONE YEAR these windows would pay for themselves!”  Helllooooo? “It’s been a year!” I told him.

There was only silence at the other end of the line, so I finally just hung up. He never called back.

To Ensure Expansion Polaris Building New Facility, Assembly Lines.

Long known for its all terrain vehicles and snowmobiles it’s only 13 years ago that Polaris started building motorcycles, cruisers then touring motorcycles. Still a relatively small player in the overall motorcycle market, Polaris is the second largest manufacturer of heavy weight motorcycles – a 4-billion segment – behind Harley-Davidson. Polaris on-road market is now profitable, rapidly expanding with new models and the addition of the Indian Motorcycle brand now requires the construction of a facility in Spirit Lake, Iowa to open new assembly lines. New American International Motorcycle Expo

One month ago I pre-announced the launch of the American International Motorcycle Expo (“AIME”) to debut Fall 2013. It’s purpose is  to serve as the catalyst to bring together industry, press, dealers and consumers in a single arena that creates a grand stage for motorcycling in the U.S. and North America, and delivers an efficient and energetic market-timed expo platform for B2B (Business to Business) and B2C (Business to Consumer) in the motorcycle industry. AIME intends to become the single most important show of its type in the North American market.

On Friday, taking advantage of a captive audience of professionals participating to the Indianapolis V-Twin Expo, the company “Marketplace Events” organized a press/dealers launch party of “AIME” with Vice President & General Manager, Larry Little at the podium explaining how his new show intends to energize the motorcycle industry with a vibrant marketplace that connect enthusiasts with experts, products and services in dynamic face-to-face environments. a platform promised to be unlike anything currently available in the North American market. New Curved License Plate Frames From Harley-Davidson

I know, I know… The curved license plate is almost as old as the license plate itself. But Harley proposes them with a new look and feel. Their new ones ($79.95) is shaped to hug the contour of the genuine Harley rear fender. Designed to replace the original-equipment black license plate bracket, installation requires no drilling or rewiring. The front frame cover conceals the plate’s mounting holes and raw edges, and the curved shape hides the unfinished rear side of the plate. Available in chrome or gloss-black finish, the complete kit includes all required mounting hardware. It fits many 2006-later Touring models, 2005-later Softail Deluxe and 2005-’07 Softail Springer Classic models. See an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer for fitment details.

DP Custom Ironhead Bobber

I already introduced you to the brothers duo Justin and Jarrod Del Prado at DP Custom Cycles. They love to restore or modify classic motorcycles to turn them in very raw/naked bikes. And since their passion is also auto racing, not surprisingly, many of their 2-wheel creations have a Hot Rod flair. This Bobber named “Mele” could have been only a very cool Bobber, but still similar to many, but the addition of typically racing world details gives it a very unique personality. Built around a rebuilt hopped-up 1000cc Harley Ironhead, on this project Justin and Jarrod first re-worked the traditional lines of the Bobber, never betraying its proportions, but rejuvenating them with extremely simplified and very symmetric lines. A geometry to make you want to do a little bit more than cruising the streets, if you know what I mean… Continue reading ‘DP Custom Ironhead Bobber’

Daytona Bike Week Official Logo. Did You Know?

In preparation of each Bike Week the Daytona Regional Chamber’s Bike Week Festival Task Force selects the official logo design. In addition to addressing certain requisite elements, the winning logo design must appeal to a diverse audience of bikers, vendors and marketers, and reflect the spirit and tradition of Bike Week.  The Festival Task Force Licensing Committee reviews logo designs, but only those submitted by area artists and graphic designers.

The official 2012 Bike Week logo was donated by Cubco Screen Printing & Embroidery and designed by artist Chris Highhline. Cubco began in 1987 and has expanded into several markets in the last 24 years to include screen printing, embroidery and uniforms. Chris Highline is a lifelong resident of Daytona Beach and a graduate of Mainland High School’s Academy of Communications and Multimedia Technologies

Bad Ass Steel Fenders For Tall Motorcycle Wheels Up To 30″

Tall wheels are invading the custom motorcycle scene. Escalation in size of wheels from 21″ to 30″, used indifferently by custom builders on full one-off ground up builds to Harley-Davidson baggers, has created a new market for steel fenders to wrap them beautifully.

John Shope at Sinister Industries is proud to announce the release of 4 of their very own 12 gauge steel fenders for tall front wheels. These fenders are hand spun and fully TIG welded, then precision cut for the best fit on the market. Each fender has an aggressive cut, but leaves plenty of room for trimming to suit your own taste. Each and every fender is smooth as glass, and hugs the tire just right. The thicker material also doubles as a fork brace, which you already know these larger wheels require.

You can pair one of these fenders with Sinister’s Slim Line fender mounting blocks and you will get the perfect install. Price for both the 21″, 23″, and 26″is $395! Call 623-465-5263 for pricing on the 30″. Sinister Industries.

The Bike Was Born in 1977. The Bike Builder In 1993.

If you start building such a quality bike when you are only 18 years old, probability is high that you inherited some kustom culture genes. Dad restores old cars and builds hot-rods in Hartford, South Dakota. a small city on the edge of Highway 90, just minutes west of Sioux Falls. Brother in law collects and tinker with Pans, Shovels and Knuckles… Kully Millage lives among Greasers, races dirt track bikes between the age of 11 and 17 and at 18 begins to dream of showing off an old school racing project in Sturgis during the 2011 AMD Championship Of Bike Building. And of course he will be the youngest entrant of the competition… Continue reading ‘The Bike Was Born in 1977. The Bike Builder In 1993.’

Donald Trump To Paul Teutul Senior. Disinherit Paul Jr. During an episode of “American Chopper: Senior vs. Junior” (Mondays. 9 p.m. Est on Discovery Channel) Donald Trump visited Orange County Choppers. After listening to Paul Senior list of grievances of how the son had tried to destroy his business, including the fact that the fact that Junior stole the bike shop’s manager, who knew — and then divulged — every inside detail about the business, Donald Trump made him this recommendation “Don’t leave him anything. Myrtle Beach Spring Rally Controversy. After Myrtle Beach Harley Davidson moved the dates of their Cruisin’ the Coast Spring Rally from May 14-20 to May 18-28, the same weekend as Atlantic Beach Bike Fest, Horry County council members are threatening to revoke all May bike rally vendor permits. Currently, permits last seven days for the Spring Rally, May 14-20 and four days for Atlantic Beach’s Bike Fest, May 25-28. Opponents to rally extension say combining the two rallies will create traffic problems for residents and emergency responders and request that all permits to be revoked. Some are more moderate and ask for a reduction rally vendor permits to only 3 days. Myrtle Beach Council plans to vote on which avenue to take at its next meeting on February 23rd.
