Refined Softail Air Suspension

sas

If my memory is good, CCCS (Custom Cycle Control Systems) must have launched The SAS (The Simplified Air Suspension system) for Softail about 3 years ago.  It is now offered with an improved air intake filter system.  This addition to the SAS eliminates the chance of debris or water entering the internal compressor. The SAS has no compressor to mount, no pressure hoses to run, no fittings to fail and is very easy to install. Ever experience slow leaks caused by a pinhole in one of your hoses that takes forever (if you are that lucky) to find. Raise and lower your rear end at the touch of a button. Add air pressure to improve ride quality during changing road conditions or while hauling added weight.  There is also an adjustable dampening valve.  Ride height is also adjustable (maximum height is set during installation). 3″ to 4″ of travel. 6″ for custom applications. Comes complete with mounting instructions. CCCS honors a 3-year parts replacement warranty. Custom Cycle Control Systems

Pantera Custom Motorcycle

pantera1pantera2You probably noticed. In parallel to the vintage restoration and the new old school style trends, and in addition to the return of Jap and Brit motors used in custom motorcycles, there is a style of bikes getting a new attention from custom builders. The sport bike/dragster look. And not only for one-off creations, but also for limited edition series. Of course, Confederate is one of the companies specializing in this design. A new one is Pantera Motorcycles with this dragster/long wheel base model. The prototype was released in 2004 and is now sold $44,500 with many available options. Lightning Rod Hand-Tooled Seat

duaneballardseat2Like paint jobs, custom seats can make or break your bike. Loving hand-tooled seats I will not miss an opportunity to show you what I like. Another fine example created for a new bike built by Steve Carr and Rick Bonin at Lighting Rod Motorcycles. It is a collaboration between Kevin Baas for the hand formed steel pan and Duane Ballard for the leather hand-tooling featuring the shop name/ logo and stitching.

Send me good pics of what you have seen or done, and I will publish…if I agree.

Beer Trike. Is It The New English Pub?

battistinis_beer_engine“Hey Cyril, Further your Brit Bike article have a look at the attached image for something we built for the British Biker Build-Off over here that we never really released any images of. Mark wanted to create  something that was totally different for what we were known for. Bike and side car with fully operational mobile bar. It all runs on air suspension on all three wheels so you can ensure you can get the last drop drunk! Enjoy’ Anthony Foy

Lady Golden Deliverance

deliverance1deliverance2deliverance3You hit 50 and start your golden years. The kids are University bound. You and your husband realize that the big city rat race doesn’t make any sense anymore. Sell the big business and with him go back to the farm. On it, let him build a 3000 sq. feet custom fabrication shop. Spend quality time with him at home and on the road. Kim is the wife of well known custom builder Steve “Brewdude”Garn. And when it was time to celebrate their deliverance from the never ending and pointless pursuit of affluence Steve decided to build a new bike for Kim. Continue reading ‘Lady Golden Deliverance’

Tires Directional Arrows Explained By Avon Tyres

avontyresBefore we can talk about directional arrows you must first understand a bit about tread patterns. There are many different tread patterns but there is one main reason to have any tread and that is to disperse water. (dust, dirt)

A tread pattern can be designed to disperse more water by making it rotate in only one direction. Thus, the need for directional arrows. The arrow tells you which way to mount a tire for maximum water dispersal. Another, less apparent reason for directional arrows is the tread splice. Harley-Davidson. Made In America. In Thailand. In Singapore. And Tomorrow In India?

HarleyInIndia18 months ago, it was a ” mangoes-for-bikes” negotiation? Let India export freely its mangoes to the US and we will let you import some Hogs. New Harley-Davidson President and CEO Matt Levatich is going to India where he will participate to the SIAM conference and will evaluate a strategy to import some models in the country (it is rumored at the end of 2009), will probably continue negotiations for the right to open some retail outlets (in 2010) and evaluate the possibility of building an assembly plant (2010 or 2011) to escape the heavy fees and taxes on imported CBU’s (Completely Built Units). If Harley would be given the right to open such a facility it would be its 3rd overseas plant after Thailand and Singapore. Are we going to see a time when most Harley-Davidson models will be built abroad at cheap labor price and then imported in the US for a fat margin?

Buell Motorcycles New Logo

oldbuelllogo

newbuelllogo

Never underestimate the power of corporate identity and of one of its main components, the Logo. I always disliked the Buell Logo, for me a very poor branding expression of what the Erik Buell’s motorcycles are supposed to represent to bikers, speed and agility. Looked to me like the “plastic raised letters” fake aluminum logo you could find stamped on a cheap brand of tool boxes sold at Costco or Sears. So, I was nicely surprised to see that the poorly conceived and immature Buell Logo has been replaced by a new one using an italic/gothic/all-caps typo more in line with the idea of speed. In it, an abstract Pegasus used since a long time in the automotive industry (Mobil used it since the 1930’s). A winged horse  may be not very original in its conception (how many different ways can you show a  flying horse?), but at least stallions are always synonymous with horsepower. I like better this new Logo. And you? Buell Motorcycles.

Bomber Jacket To Go With Your Bobber Paint Job Nose Art.

bomberjacket1bomberjacketI told you 2 weeks ago that distressed brown leather was big again, for you, for your bike accessories and you riding your bike. But when I wrote my article about the new Harley-Davidson distressed brown leather seats and bags I didn’t think you would email me to ask me where to buy a cool Bomber Jacket to match the vintage or retro looking style of your bike. But you did…Although many places can be recommended, one Jacket I like a lot (different from mine…) is this one  with a full zippered front & a covered flap. It has 3 inside pockets & knit waist and cuffs. Fully lined with a map lining and poly filled. In cow leather. Other models available. Right now on sale at $139.99. A pretty good deal, I think. How Midwest Control Products Didn’t Lay Off Any Employee. Instead Did Some Gardening.

mcpYesterday, Mark Rauschert, President of Midwest Control, told me “keeping your long time employees employed during tough times is a normal thing to do”.  With a business way down Mark succeeded not laying off any employee. Read his wonderful story as told by Jillian Stambaugh, Eagle Staff Writer. Everybody is starving for good news in this dismal economy. So, please read attentively.

“Most people…if you’re running a machine doing the same thing eight hours a day in a hot factory and you get a chance to do something else – go outside and do three or four different things throughout the day – they like it,” said Kerry Rhodes, Vice President of Bushnell’s Midwest Control Products (MCP). While the company is known worldwide as a fabrication plant for John Deere, Caterpillar, Volvo and Mack Trucks, as well as for creating several common shelf hardware products, MCP has taken their production line a step further this summer after having considered their financial options in the face of a dismal economy and being left with two options – lay off employees or create more work for them.  Continue reading ‘How Midwest Control Products Didn’t Lay Off Any Employee. Being a Free Bird To Sturgis And Back. It’s What Is All About.

freebird1freebird2“Hey Cyril, How about blasting at 90 mph to Sturgis and back on a left-over parts homebuilt chopper with everything you need to survive bungied on. You alone, putting your faith in your efforts with no back-up truck followin’ ya. Motor homes with trailers, yuppies [Wild Hogs] on baggers, all in a blur as you fly past them on a lonely two-lane backroads highway [homey don’t do interstates]. Not all bunnys and rainbows as you fix things on your pony. Continue reading ‘Being a Free Bird To Sturgis And Back. It’s What Is All About.’

Joke Of The Week

ssengineA mechanic was removing a cylinder-head from the motor of a Harley motorcycle when he spotted a well-known cardiologist in his shop. The cardiologist was there waiting for the service manager to come and take a look at his bike when the mechanic shouted across the Garage, ‘Hey Doc, want to take a look at this?’ The cardiologist, a bit surprised, walked over to where the mechanic was working on the motorcycle. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, ‘So Doc, look at this engine. I open its heart, take the valves out, repair any damage, and then put them back in, and when I finish, it works just like new”.

So how come I make $39,675 a year and you get the really big bucks ($1,695,759) when you and I are doing basically the same work?’ The cardiologist paused, smiled and leaned over, then whispered to the mechanic… “Try doing it with the engine running”. (Sent By Troy)

Catherine “Katmandu” Palmer is a 24+ years veteran of the motorcycle industry. Most of you have read/seen her photojournalism work in major magazines. She rides her own motorcycle since 1976. She was in Court during Billy Lane sentencing. Below, she freely expresses her personal feelings and opinion about the case.

“In this day and age of political correctness, I am about to go napalm on you all. I was in the courtroom when William “Billy” Lane was sentenced. I stood in the corridor during the recesses. Reluctantly, I shook the hand of the dead man’s brother. I saw the anguish in a mother’s eyes, and felt the weight of civilized man on a family that has been through HELL for the last three years. Not yet a South Dakota small town, but while overall the number of participants for the 2009 Sturgis Rally vary from source to source, from flat to a 15% decrease versus last year, Jay Allen claims that the Broken Spoke Saloon (Lazelle Street) and its extension the Broken Spoke Campground (County Line) had this year absolute record traffic numbers.
