Royal Enfield Motors, manufacturer of the iconic Bullet motorcycle line and the world’s oldest motorcycle brand, announced that the company has reached record sales levels for 2011. At mid-year, Royal Enfield had sold more than 42,000 units world-wide YTD (an increase of over 40 percent) and was already on track to meet its aggressive 2011 goal of 70,000 units worldwide. Now, as international distributors report sales for the third quarter, the brand has already surpassed its sales totals of 2010. In the United States, where the brand is distributed exclusively by Classic Motorworks, sales have risen more than 50 percent, making it one of the brand’s strongest growth markets. In a classic case of race technology moving to street motorcycles. Ducati unveiled his new V-Twin Engine dubbed the SuperQuadro (super square) claiming to have squeezed 195 bhp and 98 lbs of torque from the 1199 cc liquid-cooled v-twin engine.
The recipe? A bore of 112 mm and stroke of 60.8 mm with larger titanium valves and forged pistons letting the engine rev harder. Of course the engine uses the iconic Desmodromic valve system which uses a mechanical system to close the valves rather than rely on a spring. Ducati claims its new motor is the most powerful V-twin production engine. Any company to challenge this statement?

It is considered (some will challenge) the oldest car. A De Dion-Bouton named “La Marquise” built in France in 1884 and of course steam powered by the burn of coal, wood and bits of paper. It took about 30 minutes of combustion before there was enough steam to move the car! Maximum speed was 38 miles per hour.

Saturday October 9, 2011. At the awards ceremony organized at Chester’s Harley-Davidson in Mesa, Arizona, Hoka Hey organizer Jim Durham declared that none of the top 11 riders who finished within the allotted time would receive any money! Will Barclay was again on August 5th, like in 2010, the first one to cross the finish line of the Hoka Hey 2011, and was considered until 2 days ago the repeat winner of the riding challenge event. He was supposed to receive $250,000 with the following 24 winners also sharing another $250,000. But rules of the Hoka Hey requires that the winner(s) goes for post winning testings. Among others: a check of the motorcycle(s ) for mechanical fitness (what does it mean?), a drug screening test to detect any use of illegal performance enhancements, a lie detector polygraph test, etc.
In Arizona at the awards ceremony, Jim Durham stated. “Because of the fact that the 2010 event did not utilize US Fleet Tracking to obtain information about the rider’s speeds and location, the Organizers had to rely on local law enforcement as the primary mean of enforcing speeding violations. This year, the Hoka Hey went high tech and utilized GPS tracking devices to monitor the riders to insure compliance with the prescribed route of navigation and speed. In this 2011 event, the specific information provided by US Fleet Tracking about the 11 contenders could not be ignored by the Organizers of the Challenge. After the final validation had been completed, even though the 11 riders who finished within the allotted time frame have accomplished something that no other rider on earth has done, they could not be awarded prize money.” Continue reading ‘Hoka Hey Challenge Or Joke A Hey Race?’

I like this one, and maybe you too, if you are looking for a classic broken-in style with the added advantage of 2-in-1 versatility (Jacket & Vest). Distressed, mid-weight leather, adjustable side lacing and lightly-padded elbows provide the retro style elements, while zip-off sleeves quickly transform it into a vest. Pre-curved sleeves and the action back translate into riding comfort, while seven pockets offer ample storage options. Available is S – 5XL and Tall sizes. The Panhead II Leather Jacket is available now at most Harley-Davidson dealerships.

“My Time To Ride” is an interesting Harley-Davidson video series featuring 4 women in their journey to fulfill their desire to ride a motorcycle. Katie, Roshani, Gabriella and Laurie were relatively ordinary women with relatively ordinary lives. For diverse personal reasons they want to break free and hit the road on their own Harley-Davidson®. Claudia Garber, the Director of Women’s Outreach at Harley-Davidson made this statement in a press release: “This series captures some amazing life transformations as these women find the liberation that can only be found on the road, from the seat of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Learning to ride a motorcycle is a powerful life-changing experience, and this comes through in these videos. We hope these four women will inspire other courageous women to take the first step toward learning to ride.” Continue reading ‘My Time To Ride. The Love Ride, the biker event that began in 1984 to raise funds for children’s charities and raise funds against autism, is back at Castaic Lake, CA October 23, 2011. For this year’s bike show, Peter Fonda is lending his name by signing each of 10 special trophies created from Harley-Davidson pistons for the winners. To enhance their experience, “Tonight Show’s” Jay Leno is also opening his famous garage to the category winners. The bike show is a key feature of the 28th annual Love Ride charity event, this year featuring country music artists Montgomery Gentry.
“Of course we love to see what the professional builders put together,” said Love Ride founder Oliver Shokouh. “By the same token, we love the personal touches and creativity we often see in enthusiast rider’s bikes, so we want those guys to have a shot at being recognized, too. With this spirit in mind, Peter and Jay have generously offered their special touch to help us create a pair of really memorable prizes.” Continue reading ‘Love Ride Bike Show On October 23, 2011. When on July 20, 2011 I introduced you to the new Harley-Davidson Dyna Switchback, your reactions were quite positive at the concept of 2 bikes in 1. It’s both a street cruiser and a touring bike via the simple addition of a fork-mounted windshield and of color matched hard saddlebag. A Dyna platform with the eager handling of Twin Cam 103″, a gleaming headlamp nacelle, five-spoke cast-aluminum wheels and a mini-ape handlebar mounted on pull-back risers are quite attracting features. But the Switchback has another important quality: it’s the lightest custom touring motorcycle in its displacement category, only 718 pounds which is an amazing 94 pounds less than a Road King! Save The Bonneville Salts. For motorsports enthusiasts the Bonneville salts are a national treasure where hundred of land speed records have been achieved. But potash mining in the area affects the thickness of the salt on which cars and motorcycles are racing. The BlueRibbon Coalition is asking automotive industry support for the establishment of a permanent salt replacement program to counteract the side effects of this ongoing mining. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM)has been responsible for managing and preserving the Bonneville Salt Flats since 1946. At the time the area’s salt depth was at least 5 feet but now the salt depth is only a few inches thick. “Alternative B” calls for a minimum one-for-one replacement of salt that was removed for potash mining. “BLM must live up to its obligation to institute its own supplement program to replenish the salt,” BRC said. Alternative B is supported by the local mine operator. Comments must be in writing (paper or electronic) and received by BLM by Nov. 7, 2011. Email comments to: ut_slfo_comments@blm.gov. Mail written comments to: Bureau of Land Management, Salt Lake Field Office, Attn: Cindy Ledbetter, 2370 South 2300 West, Salt Lake City, Utah 84119. Fax comments to: 801-977-4397. Compact and a great companion for any ride, this rugged flashlight features three settings – high, low and strobe – plus an adjustable lens to change focus from a narrow beam to a wide flood of light.
The high beam reaches 140 yards at 100 lumens, while the power-conserving low beam will last 50 continuous hours. The safety strobe attracts attention from a distance.
