No cool custom bike without at least some sheet metal fabrication. And it’s where many fail… Bryan Fuller, the owner of Fuller Hot Rods and also co-host of “Two Guy’s Garage” on the Speed Channel, and Mark Prosser, a Certified Welding Expert (CWI/CWE) teacher, have been working during 2 years on this new book focusing on custom sheet metal shaping /fabrication techniques. Especially if you ride a heavy touring bike and may have to park it on soft and/or uneven surfaces like hot asphalt, sand, grass, stones, etc. KickShoe™ is designed to do away with the need to carry a kick stand pad, coaster, or crushed beer can and have to dig through your bags to find it and then make the contortions necessary to place it under your kickstand. With KickShoe, you have an attached coaster that not only looks good on your bike, but is easily removed if no longer needed. Continue reading ‘Your Harley Touring Bike Would Love a A KickShoe™’
Yesterday Thursday August 4th, those riding the I-90 in direction of Sturgis got a chance to stop by the Klock Werks shop in Mitchell, South Dakota for a pre-Sturgis party. For the 5th year, old and new friends of the industry mingled, had a good time around bike lifts, enjoying tacos and sodas, getting their pictures with bikes taken front of the close-by very famous Corn Palace.
Brian Klock unveiled the Laura Klock Limited Edition Batwing Windshield. They are made by Sportech, the same manufacturer that makes his Flare Windshields. The windshield is high quality and suitable for daily use. but their primary function is for fundraising. The manufacturer produced and donated 150 of these windshields for the Klock Werks Krew’s charitable organization Helping With Horsepower. They sell for $100 each during the rally.
This Friday morning, some joined the Klock Werks crew to travel the last 4.5 hours leg of the ride to Sturgis. There, the shop will have its display of bikes and parts setup in Rapid City at Black Hills Harley-Davidson.
Encouraged by the success of the Pro-Tour X Bagger he built a couple of years ago for the S&S Cycle 50th Anniversary, Doug Wozney obsessed with the idea of turning a factory Harley Sportster, the lightest American made platform, into a strong performance bagger with a low center-of-gravity and superior cornering ability and wrapped in an aggressive Pro-Street/Touring cloak. The XL chassis dressed by Doug with its new touring chassis kit makes the final bike a cool 250 pounds less than a heavyweight factory touring model. Must be of interest to a lot of bikers from both sexes. The only modification is a change to the stock drivetrain, using a longer V-Rod® drive belt eliminating hassles at OEM dealerships with service/repairs. It looks to me like”black chrome”, but Harley-Davidson claims that it’s not, that it’s not a chrome process and that they are the first to offer this treatment in the motorcycle industry. I will have to check from close on the Harley display on Lazelle Street in Sturgis.
Harley states that Black Ice is the product of a proprietary treatment that combines depth with a highly reflective surface. It’s a look that complements both chrome and black accessories, and many colors.
This new surface finish has been introduced on three custom wheel sets. Roulette custom wheels (P/N 43300116 17-inch front, P/N 40900113 16-inch rear; $549.95 each) and Agitator custom wheels (P/N 43300115 19-inch front, P/N 40900112 18-inch rear; $749.95 each), both for select 2009-later Touring models. Black Ice is also offered on V-Rod 5-Spoke wheels (P/N 55083-11 19-inch front, 55082-11 18-inch rear; $649.95 each) for the 2009-later V-Rod Muscle® and 2012 Night Rod® Special.
The Original Broken Spoke Saloon on Lazelle Street is a down home, honky-tonk party that is on fire the entire 71st rally week. With its ride through bar, tire burned dance floor, museum quality motorcycles and collectibles, and non-stop entertainment it’s where the real rider loves to hang out. This year, Jay Allen, founder of the Broken Spoke, welcomes neighbor Easyriders Saloon and Steakhouse, “We’re so excited to have this fine establishment next door. We’ve opened our yards so customers can flow between us and enjoy a full experience of two genuine brands celebrating the motorcycle lifestyle. Together we’re one giant block party!”
Having been featured on The Learning Channel, Discovery Channel, Travel Channel, Outdoor Life, Smithsonian Channel, and many other networks and best-selling DVD motorcycle films, The Original Broken Spoke Saloon has always been an incubator for history-making events and custom motorcycle builder talent, and, of course, a hot spot for industry legends to congregate. “We’re a shrine to the biker lifestyle,” tells Jay, “Coming here is mandatory to the full Sturgis Rally experience.”
This year, Jay Allen hosts several must-see adrenaline-fueled experiences: Cycle Source Magazine Night, the 8th with editor and Limpnickie Lot founder, Chris Callen and friends; Michael Lichter/Sugar Bear adventure ride, the 9th where riders are photographed by an Easyriders Magazine legend. Baker Smoke Down Showdown on Monday showcases hot, young custom builders in head-to-head tire blazin’ competition and on Tuesday the customer gets to smoke down their rides for awards. AHDRA top fuel bikes light it up live on the dance floor Tuesday and industry legends seize the S&S Smokeout burnin’ spotlight, Wednesday, with one lucky customer winning an S&S Cycles 113” engine. I fell in love at first sight with these motorbikes, modern interpretation of board track racing motorcycles. Evocation of banked wood motordromes, of smell of fuel, of speed, of danger, of checkered flag… Each Derringer cycle is custom built and no two are exactly alike. But all succeed with a design at the intersection of nostalgia and adrenaline. Continue reading ‘Derringer Bespoke Motorbikes Collection. I Want One.’
Are you all about sleek and naked fast machines? Are you a nostalgic of the English “Cafe Society”, of the rockers reunions and of the early ton-up boys and girls doing burn-ups and racing from cafe to cafe the time of a Gene Vincent song. In the 70’s, in England and in many countries around the world, riders of Cafe Racers created a cult of speed that moto-journalist and producer Mike Seate captured very well in his first TV documentary series on HD Theater (Discovery Channel). Thanks to high ratings and loads of buzz, welcome to “Cafe Racer” TV season 2 starting August 3, 2011. Sixteen more episodes capturing the café racer scene all around the globe. When Minnesota based Polaris announced they purchased Indian Motorcycle, the acquisition raised a lot of questions regarding the way the OEM manufacturer would design the new models, in what range of prices, how the iconic brand would cohabit with Victory and when the new Polaris/Indian motorcycles would be announced?
What we know for sure today is that Polaris is deeply committed to rebuilding the brand with great motorcycles and there is absolutely no doubt in the industry that the company has the capabilities, engineering knowledge, sourcing and design resources to build a quality and strong line up. But the main issue for all of you is not about Polaris technical abilities but about the way to use them to keep the Indian brand true to its long heritage iconic image. Do you know that every week, iTunes offers a movie rental for only 99 cents? Well, this week, it’s “Harlistas, An American Journey” and having seen it, it’s well worth your change money. I found the movie extremely touching, transcending the Latino and even the motorcycle lifestyle.
It’s all about the universal values of camaraderie, of shared adventures on and off the road strengthening the familial bonds. Watching four stories of riders of Latino heritage healing their pain and surviving tragedies via the biker lifestyle while pursuing the American dream is quite refreshing by the times we are living.
It’s a must watch for all of you. You can rent the movie for 99 cents (August 2-8) via the following website, then tell me in comments what you think of it. Movie Rentals Of The Week.

This year’s X-Games added a division called “Women Moto X Enduro”. Female riders? Cool, even more when they take off their helmets and you find out that they are all pretty good looking. But I wonder what’s going on with these women participating to the Enduro with very few of them able to stand on their motorcycles more than 30 seconds. All drunk? Paid by the sponsors to be very entertaining? Women know how to ride, so what is the explanation? And ladies don’t jump on me. Those of you knowing me personally know that I am not sexist…
I am not sure who originally wrote the text below. It was forwarded to me. What is important is that the numbers mentioned below are correct. And they seem to be, making the argument of not buying Chinese products during at least 1 month, quite powerful. Interested by “fair trade”, jobs creation and US government debt reduction? Read and act as recommended.
“Well over 50 years ago I knew a lady who would not buy Christmas gifts if they were made in China. Her daughter will recognize her in the following. Did y’all see Diane Sawyer’s ABC News special report a few weeks ago? They removed ALL items from a typical, Texas middle class family’s home that were not made in the USA. There was hardly anything left besides the kitchen sink. Literally. During the special they showed truckloads of items – USA made – being brought in to replace everything and talked about how to find these items and the difference in price etc.. It was interesting that Diane said if every American spent just $64 more than normal on USA made items this year, it would create something like 200,000 new jobs! Just outside Monticello, Iowa, a mere 10 miles from J&P Cycles®’ headquarters lies a very special camp for very special people – children and adults with special needs. For more than 30 years, Camp Courageous of Iowa has been a place, where campers can have a great time with others facing the same challenges in a safe and nurturing environment.
J&P Cycles® has supported Camp since 2002 when they began incorporating an Industry Golf Outing to the Open House festivities. The golf tournament originated as a way for industry distributors and media who travel from across the country to relax during an afternoon of friendship and fun, all while raising money for a worthy cause. Distributors and media contribute by sponsoring holes and awards in addition to making cash donations. In total this year, 42 representatives from 28 of J&P Cycles® exhibitors and industry media participated in the tournament. This year, the 10th Annual Golf Outing held on June 24th raised $25,000 for Camp Courageous., bringing the total raised over the last 10 events to well over $125,000. “Presenting this check to Camp Courageous this year is a true honor,” said John Parham. “We are thankful to the great support we receive from our customers, employees and manufacturers.” Continue reading ‘J&P Cycles Donates $25,000 to Camp Courageous of Iowa’

The Flying Eyeball, an iconic image associated with the 50’s and 60’s street rod crowd. It is an interpretation by Kenneth Howard, a.k.a. Von Dutch, of a symbol/image “the eye in the sky knows and see all” whose origin can be traced 5000 years ago in the Macedonian and Egyptian culture. Legend is that Von Dutch modified the original image during an acid trip…
You can still find a lot of Von Dutch plastic junk at WallMart (please, avoid), but if you are looking for cool quality lead free, pewter pins and badges featuring the Flying Eyeball, a good address is the mysterious Unkl Ian who is producing his work in a hidden bunker somewhere near a pewter mine in the backwoods of Canada. His Flying Eyeballs are very cool, and because they are hand made and hand painted, the added beauty is that none will ever be the same. And he charges only $3 to $6 for shipping to North America, By the way, he is also a very good pinstriper. Tell him I sent you. Unkl Ian Flying Eyeball Pins And Badges.

New twist in the debate regarding motorcycling with or without helmets. Not about freedom of choice, not about health and safety benefits, not about DOT etc…
Results show that the biggest and most dangerous source of noise is not the roar of your engine, but your helmet acting as a special air filter attenuating noise in the region above 500 Hz and amplifying noise in the regions below 500 Hz. Even at legal speeds, the sound of air rushing in areas underneath the helmet and near the chin bar can exceed safe levels. Continue reading ‘Are Motorcycle Helmets Responsible For Hearing Loss?’
When I introduced you to the Custom Chrome Lucky F*cker custom body kit (custom gas tank, tank adapter kit, solo seat pan, rigid style rear fender and fender struts) for stock Harley-Davidson, you loved it. Four bikers can move forward with a class action that claims Harley Davidson manufactured defective motorcycles that burn drivers’ legs, a federal judge ruled. the four bikers alleged that since 1999, Twin Cam engines in Harley motorcycles were prone to overheating and caused burn injuries to their legs. Transmissions on models manufactured since 2006 also came with defective transmissions, the bikers claimed. District Judge John Mendez sided with the bikers on their claims for fraudulent and unfair business practices, violations of Consumers Legal Remedies Act (CLRA), and unjust enrichment. If you are a faithful to the Sturgis rally, you know that ambient conditions in the Black Hills vary an extraordinary amount. During the same day riding altitudes can vary from 3500 to over 6500 feet, creating rich conditions that are unnecessary and waste a lot of fuel. Reason why the Thundermax and Zipper’s Performance display at Black Hills Harley-Davidson in Rapid City is always jammed with riders impatient to get their bikes equipped with the “ThunderMax® Auto Tune.” Continue reading ‘Sturgis And Black Hills.
