Fast Motorcycle Industry News

1- NFL Motorcycle Helmets. Andy Brogden is persistent. He banged on the doors of the National Football League for three years until he got a five-year, exclusive contract to produce motorcycle and kids’ bicycle helmets (half and three-quarters) emblazoned with the NFL team logos. The NFL promised to order 45,000 units at a time and have the helmets in stores 60 days after that. So, the merchandise is expected to arrive in stores this spring. The helmets will be available in stores carrying motorcycle apparel, on the official NFL website, in football stadiums and on TV and at Toys R Us for kids helmets. The bad news. These helmets will be produced in China to keep the retail price as low as possible. China? The NFL should check very closely that the yellow Packers helmet is a true Packers yellow, and that the burgundy Redskins helmet is Redskins burgundy…

Custom BSA Lightning

Motorcycles never die and when they are revived they are painstakingly restored to look as brand new or re-dressed to look even better than the originals. This 1965 BSA Lightning belongs to the second category and is a very fine example of custom vintage motorcycle work. 3 weeks ago, its builder Jesse Bassett from the Gasbox Shop in Cleveland, OH was rewarded for his custom fabrication skills by winning the Freestyle Class in the International Motorcycle Show. A creation that you should be able to admire from close in Sturgis during the 2011 AMD World Championship Of bike Building. It was a 2-year project and Jesse told me about the main issues he had to resolve while rebuilding, repairing, restoring and customizing this original production motorcycle from the Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA) Continue reading ‘Custom BSA Lightning’

Latest Technology Carbon Fiber Wheel

Met for the 1st time Michael Kamalian from Revolution Cycle Manufacturing  during the 2005 V-Twin Expo where he was exhibiting his first custom motorcycle fitted with his own carbon fiber parts, frame, tank, wheels etc.  Seven years later we talked again at the same last weekend V-twin Expo and Michael gave me an update on his company progression and specifically on the improvement brought to his carbon wheels that he manufactures in his Marietta, Georgia facility.

But first, a reminder of the multiple advantages of carbon fiber wheels. In addition of look (if it’s the one you are after), because of reduced static mass (upward to 26+ lbs on some common wheel sizes) a motorcycle will feel lighter while riding, turn faster and just make handling more controllable and comfortable. Chrysler. Imported From Detroit. Superb.

If you belong to the 111 million viewers who watched last weekend Green Bay vs. Pittsburgh Super Bowl XLV you probably saw this Chrysler commercial. Best American car ad I have ever seen. I love it because it’s not only about Chrysler but Detroit. The tag line “Imported From Detroit” is pure creative genius. Worth watching again.

JIMS® Heat Sink Cam Cover

By definition, high performance, big inch motors run hotter than smaller, stock displacement motors and need more air to reduce their running temperature. A new and simple idea from JIMS USA, in collaboration with Cornerstone Metrology, is to let outside air flow through a nice looking “fin pack” design that you fit into the existing stock cam cover.

Installation uses the existing timing cover hardware and only takes minutes. JIMS® Heat Sink Cam Cover is manufactured from top quality aluminum here in the USA and is available in Chrome Plated, or RawCut Black, MSRP from $74.10 to $98.50, depending on finish. For more information call 805-482-6913 or visit JIMS USA.

Exclusive. Big Dog Motorcycles Trying The Bike Kit Business.

As the US economy went into recession, demand for production custom built motorcycles fell with it. Many small producers of custom American V-Twin motorcycles disappeared, while others like Big Dog Motorcycles struggled to stay afloat.

After several rounds of reorganization, a failed attempt to find an investor/partner, a test to sell a lower priced chopper at $20,000, Big Dog Motorcycles is now trying a new marketing approach, selling OEM “Build A Bike” Kits. Companies like Desperado Motorcycles and Big Bear Choppers have been successful in the past at selling rolling chassis of their most popular models.   Continue reading ‘Exclusive. Bean’re About To Take The Plunge.

Bean’re. Ex Marine Corp, self employed professional tourist, a nice character and familiar face in all US motorcycle rallies (and some abroad), a long distance rider on his chopped Harley Raod King, is going to taking a Big Plunge. No, not getting married. Him? Just taking a Big Polar Jump into the icy Ohio River in an effort to raise money for the special Olympics. And this event deserves a few lines in my digital space to ask you if you would like to help raise money for this year-round program of sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Through a volunteer network, athletes pay nothing to participate to nearly 2,000 events annually. Bean’re will take the Big Polar Plunge on February 26th, 2011 at the Tumbleweed restaurant on the Ohio River in Louisville, Kentucky. Get involved by going to his personal donation site on the Polar Plunge website

City Of Myrtle Beach Tweaking Its Motorcycle Noise Ordinance

Since September 2008 Myrtle Beach had a city ordinance limiting motor vehicles to a level of 89 decibels while the engine is running at idle speed.

Such ordinance, among over 15 others, was openly the way mayor John Rhodes intended to eliminate any bike rally inside the city limits. And we know that he was successful at discouraging most bikers to ride through Myrtle Beach, even at participating to any event around the city. Erik Buell To Launch Street Bike At End Of Year

It was October 15, 2009. Harley-Davidson announced that Buell motorcycles were immediately discontinued. In a press conference the same day, a very emotional Erik Buell confirmed the news. Immediately, in the same city of East Troy, WI Erik founded Erik Buell Racing, a company not affiliated in any way with Buell® or Harley-Davidson, to produce only racing sport bikes and provide technical assistance to the teams.

Erik Buell was prevented by contract with Harley-Davidson to build any street bikes during a period of one year after the breakup. In exchange he kept many of the rights to the Buell machines that had been in production when Harley closed down the original Buell company. 2011 Harley-Davidson Softail Recall. Citing the possibility of a deadly crash, Harley Davidson urges owners of 2011 Softails to check their mail for a recall notice. 6,964 owners are affected by the latest recall regarding their Softail manufactured between June and October 2010 (whose motorcycles feature security system kits accessories) These particular motorcycles feature a defect of the body control modules that results in an incomplete seal. As a result, there is the possibility of water seepage into the modules, which in turn risks engine stalls. If the rider is operating the motorcycles when the stall occurs, a (potentially deadly) crash is possible.

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The Sturgis city council approved a new ordinance limiting the time temporary structures can be in place before being open for business. The ordinance now allows vendors a seven-day period to set up their tents before they are selling their goods and four days to take them down. No vending can take place during the period outside the valid permit. Additional changes include language making the landowner subject to the enforcement of the ordinance. Under current city laws, vendors can purchase two 12-day vendor permits. Continue reading ‘Fast Motorcycle Industry News’

Senior Versus Junior TV Series And Lawsuits. Reality Bites When Lights Go Out.

Your favorite TV motorcycle show to hate, “Senior versus Junior”, an extension of “American Chopper”, drew to a close last Monday evening at 10 pm.  Haters, don’t rejoice. Expect 100’s of  hours of rerun, here in the US and abroad. Lovers, rejoice for exactly the same reason…

The series ended with no closure between father and sons. Personally, with its constant quest for drama to attract and keep viewership, I always found the show quite annoying, even painful to watch. Because of the type of motorcycle work done front of the cameras, but also because I will never belong to those who find any pleasure seeing a “new rich” family self-destruct about money issues.
