Horex Brand Resurrected In Germany

Always exciting to hear about an old brand being revived. Problem is that the first new Horex model released in 50 years does absolutely nothing to me, and I hear to many professional observers in Germany. And it’s a pity because the new engine – a 1218 cc triple overhead camshaft supercharged VR6 engine with six cylinders arranged in two rows of three- is absolutely unique in the world. It was was originally developed with the help of Volkswagen.

If the VR6 engine clearly defines this new model character, I don’t think that the overall design is going to appeal to many potential buyers already afraid of “testing” at their own risk a new motorcycle from a new brand, even if resurrected. The world doesn’t need another motorcycle company, except if the products offered bring both new technology and seductive aesthetics. Not one or the other… Initial production in 2011 in Europe and then US and Canada is projected to be in the thousands. Let’s see…

Triangle Chopper Headlight. Aris Style.

A 12 volt reproduction of the vintage Aris triangular headlight at a price of onlly $57.95 is worth mentioning.

And the second thing you want to know is measurements: 5″ x 5″ (excluding mount) for a 3″ depth, so much more shallow and lighter than the original one. A plus…

Bottom mount is of the swiveling type. In chrome or black. For Sale at Lowbro Customs.

The American Biker. The History. The Lifestyle. The Truth.

The biker lifestyle. Many not living it try to define it from outside. And by definition, it’s impossible to explain a culture that you don’t live and share. You can’t expect truth coming from a fantasy-driven entertainment industry, tv, movies or magazines. Those living it can feel it but would have difficulties explaining it in writing to others. Is the Biker Lifestyle something that can be defined, explained? Is it beyond comprehension, a level of living that can only be experienced?

Bill Hayes is one of those very few motorcycle culture historians who is both riding and writing since the 60’s about his vast and deep experience with all the spectrum of a lifestyle filled with love, camaraderie but also with hard realities like biker harassment, politics, etc.

American Biker, his new book about the lifestyle, its history, its members, from activists to builders to MC Clubs, is a very comprehensive and introspective observation of the biker world. Continue reading ‘The American Biker. The History. The Lifestyle. The Truth.’

Honda Fury Turned Into A Furious Chopper

I remember that when I announced the launch of the Honda Fury, your comments went in 2 opposite directions. It’s a nice Chopper with a competitive price, but it’s a Honda. And it’s a nice chopper at a very attractive price and who cares if it’s a Honda. At less than $13,000, with a pure new chopper line (38-degree rake, 71 1/4″ wheelbase, 26″ low seat), a 1312 cc liquid cooled V-Twin engine with a single-pin crankshaft and dual balancers, a 5-speed transmission, beefy 45 mm forks with 4″ of travel, an adjustable single shock rear suspension, the 2010 new Fury was not only the most distinctive custom Honda had ever created but aso a very attractive motorcycle susceptible to appeal to part of the Harley or Harley clone crowd. Even more if Honda was able to demonstrate that its factory Honda could be easily turned into a very nice custom. Continue reading ‘Honda Fury Turned Into A Furious Chopper’

Harley-Davidson Scale Model Running Panhead Engine

His name is Ron Colonna. This engine was scratch built to a scale of 2/5ths or 40% of full size. The bottom end was taken from a drawing of a Knuckelhead engine that he purchased on e-Bay. The top end was patterned after photos taken from e-bay of Harley parts for sale. He also bought a Harley repair manual that helped with the oil system. The crankcase was split into three sections instead of the usual two for ease of machining. The ignition is solid state and I use a GM coil which fires the two plugs simultaneously. Timing is advanced and retarded with the timer body. Two rotating magnets fire a Hall effect device at the proper times as per full sized points. No casting used. Ignition: Spark. Bore: 1 5/16 in. Stroke: 1 1/2 in.The engine is large enough to produce that lovely V-twin sound.

Harley-Davidson To Decide In March Fate Of Kansas City Plant

Super Cafe Racer

Shades of the 60’s are everywhere in our motorcycle industry. And logically, Cafe Racer nostalgia is extremely strong in the UK, the land of the original Rockers in black leather and white scarf racing their bikes between trucker cafes. A subculture revival extremely positive for our custom motorcycle industry, of course no more based on rebellion but only on the pure desire to draw from the past (concept and parts) to build highly performant street bikes. The appeal of this Super Cafe Racer is what helped builder John Pellew transition from a part time builder job to a full service shop called Taimoshan Cycle Works based in Cardiff, Wales, UK.
