During LeMans (parent company of Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited) annual vendors meeting, not surprisingly, Corporate Chairman Fred Fox acknowledged that the economy had taken a toll on his parts distribution business. And although the company has never disclosed its sales figures, announced that the sales will be down for year 2009. LeMans Group has about 1200 employees with close to a whopping 70% of orders placed online by its Dealers. Fox focused his speech on defining 4 areas requiring his attention. On august 12, I informed you of the return of the Brough Superior with 2 new models presented at the Pebble Beach Concours. Jay Leno was there and didn’t miss to notice the “Rolls Royce Of Motorcycles”. And he is again the lucky guy with the opportunity to ride the new Brough Superior Pendine Racer.
Among the veterans (the Salt Dogs) quite a few Custom Builders from different countries ready to show the world that they know how to tune their machines to run-in and very fast. Among them, the largest crew of racers is the Klocks Werks Team with not less than 15 people (add me for encouragements), 6 bikes and 4 racers! But the most beautiful part of the 2009 Klocks Bonneville Story is 1- Brian’s wife Laura Klocks , already holding a world speed record in the bagger class will pursue tomorrow another one in the PP-2000 class with a stock Victory Vision. 2- That youngest daughter Karlee Cobb, only 15 years old will go for the record on a Buell Blast in the class MPS-PG 500. Karlee was last year in Bonneville the youngest female to ever set 2 world records!!! 3- That second daughter Erika Cobb, 18 years old will race a 2003 Buell XB9 in the class P-PG 1000. Mother & 2 daughters are the 1st ever trio to set Bonneville records in the same year at a sped event. And there is more, Michelle Mielke, wife of Klocks Werks main man Joe Mielke is also going for the maximum speed on a 02 Yamaha Road Warrior. As you know, Randy Simpson recently closed his business Milwaukee Iron. Yesterday Thursday “Asset Sales” was auctioning the brand name, his building, all bikes and equipment. An offer at $400,000 for the name was rejected by Randy Simpson because he considers that his 25-year old brand is worth much more than that. The building was sold for $490,000. Bikes were sold for an average of $20,000 a piece, and a Leifeild Spinning Lathe change hands for $275,000. Randy, smile again. You have now enough money to not miss any stop on the show tour. Harley-Davidson is starting its conquest of India, the 2nd largest consumers market in the world (1,198,003,000) and the 4th in purchasing power). A local Harley plant is also in the works. A Harley New Dehli tee-shirt is going to be worth a lot of rupees in the USA. Yellow & orange turbans seem to be a good way to be visible on the road…Thank India for saving Harley-Davidson.

Big Dog Motorcycles just received a U.S. Department of Commerce’s Export Certificate. This certificate is for businesses that have benefited from the Department Of Commerce services to enter foreign markets. Big Dog Motorcycles started shipping motorcycles in June to its first 2 Canadian Dealers, in Montreal and Calgary and will announce 2 new Dealers very soon in Vancouver and Toronto. “Growing sales through exporting is a key strategy for the company” states Sheldon Coleman, company founder and CEO. Big Dog objective is to have in 2010 international sales represent 10 percent of all units sold. Big Dog has had several rounds of layoffs since 2007 and last week in my Blog announced a production furlough of four weeks, plus another three weeks later in the year.
