Exclusive. Billy Lane New Parts For Baggers.

More or less, each of us is stereotyped in a certain style of bikes. But the truth is that most of us like motorcycles of different brands, ages and styles. But only if they are well designed. You could be surprised to learn here in my Blog that Billy Lane spent these last months designing custom parts for baggers. Not me, for the reason I just mentioned. Billy wanted to take his actual line of parts to the next level. Translate by extending his existing line from Choppers to Baggers. And it’s the right move from a custom builder who is understanding that not everybody wants or can ride a chopper and who is realizing that his brand name is of great appeal for a wide range of bikers. Shown for the 1st time at the V-Twin Expo are these new parts: the Torpedo Taillight, the 50 Caliber Gas Cap Cover, and a set of Engraved Floorboard Inserts. Not featured here are a Ball Milled Antenna Base Cover and new Six Gun Pieces with broader fitment. A great builder never stop designing and building. It’s in our genes. The brand new line up of custom parts designed by Billy Lane can be seen at Choppers Inc.

Have Breakfast With The Best Builders And Sara Liberte.

For those who still don’t know a Builders Breakfast will be held during Daytona Bike Week on March 7th at 9AM at Destination Harley (US1 & I95). It is the opportunity for the public to have breakfast with a selection of the best builders in the world, the money being raised will benefit Boggy Creek, a camp to help seriously ill children. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to meet with Sara Liberte and discover “Sara’s Builders & Machines photography” Her fine art focuses on “image fusion”, a technique she uses to combine the portrait of a builder with one of his machines. Participants will be able to win a poster signed by all builders, and buy prints of late fellow builder Johnny Chop. Tickets for the Builders Breakfast can be bought through Choppers Inc. For a preview of Sara Liberte go to www.saraliberte.com.

New Sportster Nightster 1200 N. Macho. Macho. Macho.

I already wrote that the 2007 Harley-Davidson models are probably the best in many years, not only mechanically, but also aesthetically. The new Nightster Sportster 1200 N presented in Orlando last month confirms that the factory can improve performance and at the same time integrate quite a few design ideas and trends observed during these last few years on custom motorcycles. Harley-Davidson introduces this new Nightster as a burst of adrenalin injected in the Sportster line. And they are right. First, a macho urban look with a lot of black out parts like rims, hubs, controls front forks and clamp, headlight cover, handlebar, levers, turn signals and air cleaner insert.  The rear belt guard and front fender clamps are also black, but are opened up with a bullet holes pattern (I saw this before). For a more aggressive stance, front and rear are lowered with a seat a full one inch lower (25.3”) than on the Sportster 1200. The rear fender is shortened to show more of the rear tire. There is no taillight, because the brake light is integrated with the rear turn signals and the license plate holder is a horizontal left side mount. For a more retro look the front end is fitted with fork gaiters. The 1200cc Evolution engine, transmission and airbox cover feature a new medium gray finish with polished and black treatments. All this is pretty good and I think the Nightster is a good base for industrial look customization. More at Harley-Davidson Sportster Nighster

New Avalon Springer Front End.

In a few years MeanStreet has established itself as a dominant player in the very competitive after-market front ends business. Each year they come up with a few new models immediately adopted by the best custom builders in the world. Here the most recent example. A sleek Springer front end called Avalon sculpted from billet aluminum with just a touch of steel. Of course, it is available in most lengths and you can even choose between different clamp rakes. And of course (or it will not be in my Blog) it is designed and machined in the US. MeanStreet Products.

Contrast Cut Gasser Design Wheels

It’s now 36 years that Performance Machine produces high quality wheels and components. But the best part is that they come up every year with a couple of designs that I like very much. Here an example: the classic lines of these Gasser Wheels that you can get in polish or chrome, but that I prefer in this combination of black anodizing and raw machined aluminum. They look right both on modern and retro bikes. They called this look Contrast Cut Finish. Of course, matching components are available. Performance Machine.

Dave Perewitz is Going To Clean My Bikes. And Yours.

Only a month after announcing a co-development agreement for cleaners and polishers with custom bike builder Dave Perewitz, Boston SoapWorks launched yesterday in Indianapolis at the Dealer Expo a complete line of products under the Perewitz signature. The Perewitz Precision Cycle Care product line includes five products: Ruby Red spray and wipe cleaner (before or right after a ride for a quick cleaner with no rinsing). Cobalt Blue spray polish and windshield dressing (for hard surfaces). Gel-Tech Gold spray and rinse cleaner. Amber Bright wheel cleaner and brightener. White Hot liquid polish and protectant (to create a tough shine that lasts long after multiple washings).

Motorcycle Jobs Online

I receive at the shop and through email, a lot of unsolicited resumes, but very rarely the ones of the right candidates for the job.  Motorcycle Jobs Online is a new website listing all kind of jobs available in the motorcycle industry and a place where dealers recruiting employees can place help wanted ads. Don’t have a help wanted ad written? There are several resources to help you post an effective ad online. MIJ founder Alex Baylon suggests you check out online new prewritten help wanted ads for technicians, sales, F&I, parts and more. Motorcycle Jobs Online.

US Marshals Visit Indianapolis Dealer Expo 2007.

Yesterday at the Dealer Expo 2007 in Indianapolis U.S. Marshals served papers on about half a dozen exhibitors who allegedly manufactured unauthorized copies of patent-protected products. Manufacturers who claimed the exhibitors had violated intellectual property laws filed the lawsuits. Additional lawsuits may be served today. Advanstar sends letters to companies accused of copying products, notifying them that their future participation in the Expo could be denied if they are held liable for the offense. "It’s an understandable concern of our exhibitors," said Tracy Harris, vice president with show owner Advanstar, "but we’re not the police." Contingent of lawyers are walking the floor looking for exhibitors who might be selling illegal copies of manufacturers products. I have had quite a few illegal copies of my parts produced here in the US and China. So, I can only approve what’s happening this weekend in Indianapolis. For information I just wrote a piece to be published in Barnett Magazine about knock-offs produced in China. The same way, I also intend to take legal action against those who steal posts from this Blog and reproduce them without authorization and/or giving credit to the original author.

Tom Zimberoff Talks About His Fascination For Choppers.

Who is the man behind these custom machines is what every custom motorcycles fan wants to know. Journalists, reporters and writers do a good job at revealing who the well known custom builders are. One of the best ever is Tom Zimberoff, the celebrated author of the 2 reference hard-cover books (maybe 3 very soon) Art Of The Chopper 1 and 2. And there is a good reason why Tom is much more than a motorcycles writer and photographer and has such a deep and acute understanding of our world. Since a very young age Tom is fascinated by our bikes and is a true authentic chopper lover. He wrote a beautiful text about how, as a child, he discovered the chopper culture in the desert of Nevada. It’s very interesting and worth reading slowly (Cyril Huze).

“The first choppers I remember seeing in person lumbered along the shimmering summertime streets of mythological Las Vegas, a small but significantly hip retreat made possible by air-conditioning, long faded into memory since the 1960s and my high-school years there. It was the scene of the Rat Pack and rodeo, one-armed bandits, silver dollars, swimming pools, glamorous women wearing head scarves, big dark sunglasses, and pastel polka dots. There was always a forty-nine-cent breakfast served by a waitress who called everyone Honey. Rough-and-tumble three-patch clubs rumbled through town like Wild West desert posses, slowing down to make a visual statement on the Strip. I was particularly fascinated by the wretched excess of their motors. Maybe, I was susceptible to these loud convolutions of pipes and pig iron as a teenage boy because, in spite of their attraction, they made my blood run cold under the desert sun, mimicking the antipyretic attributes of oil flowing through their infernal plumbing.

These were primitive machines compared to today’s glitzy bikes, but in a way that choppers-as-art invoke the same kind of gut response as does one’s first glimpse of the prehistoric paintings of prey animals on the walls of antediluvian caves in Europe, the impact of which are presumed to strike awe in the beholder. I recall walking by and staring at bikes leaning in choreographed rows in casino parking lots, their chrome and aluminum parts rendered no less lambent by a patina of oil and road grime, and wished I could ride off into a desolate desert landscape on one of them myself.

The first photographs of choppers I remember seeing appeared in Look magazine. In 1967, I saw a series of portraits depicting the startling and new San Francisco counter culture which included Irving Penn’s perfect portrayals of Hells Angels and their Harleys in a studio setting. Then, in 1969, again in Look, I saw a young Ann-Margret of Viva Las Vegas (the movie) and Elvis Presley days wheeling down a desert byway just outside Sin City on a perfect, red Triumph chopper with tank scoops and a chrome girder, wearing a stars-and-stripes bustier that mimicked Peter Fonda’s characterization of Captain America on the silver screen that same year.

The latter publicity picture, made by my friend Douglas Kirkland, had stuck in my mind for decades, since long before I met and became friends with him. Older and securely established in the photo biz, he unselfishly helped me get one of my first important photo assignments. Unconsciously, perhaps, his and Penn’s photographs were catalysts for my interest in choppers later on. Now, I seek them out as a personal predilection and to record them for posterity as artifacts of a cultural insurgency.

Builders abound. Artists do not. That is to say, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of competent mechanics and fabricators who can build a really tight, beautiful motorcycle. But only a few can go beyond imitation, to meld function and style into something never seen before "

New Designer Rocker Boxes

Engine is and will always be the main visual component of any bike. I always love to customize my engines, making fin modifications, powder coating and changing the rocker boxes. During the V-Twin Expo I met with Nick Genender from NYC Choppers who showed me his new after-market rocker boxes. And I told him that I think they are superb and that I will probably need them on a next project. They are available for Panheads, Knuckleheads, H&L engines and even Twin Cams (a part to help me love TC!). See different designs and applications by going to NYC Choppers.

Help Betsy Climb Mt Everest With Discovery Channel Team.

Genevieve Schmitt, Editor of Women Riders Now, asked if I could help fellow biker & columnist Betsy Huelskamp to fulfill her dream to summit Mount Everest the highest mountain on earth (29028 feet) located on the border on Nepal & Tibet. Betsy has been accepted as the newest member of Discovery Channel’s 2007 spring Everest Expedition team led by world-renowned expedition leader Russell Brice. Last year’s expedition was turned into an enormously popular six part series entitled, "Everest: Beyond the Limit." Betsy has been riding a motorcycle for more than 20 years and is a fixture on the Harley-Davidson scene in and around the Los Angeles area. In 1997, Betsy climbed Thorong Peak and Chulu Far East, two 20,000-foot mountains in the Annapurna Range of the Himalayas. One of her dreams has been to summit Mount Everest. Now, she’ll have her chance. To make her dream a reality, Betsy must first meet another challenge, raising $42,000 plus another $20,000 in expenses. That’s the price tag for one man or woman to reach the top of the tallest mountain on earth. Betsy has set up a Web site at Betsy Helskamp to help her raise the funds needed to be part of Discovery Channel’s Everest expedition team. "I’m reaching out to everyone I know, people they know, to help me raise this money. It’s not cheap to summit Everest, but I have no doubt I’ll raise the funds. I’m already training physically, because deep down, I believe that this will happen," shares Betsy. So, everybody gives a contribution today. You will be so proud (me too) when you watch on TV Betsy salute you from top of Mt Everest. For more information contact Genevieve Schmitt, editor of Women Riders Now at 406.333.4491, or email schmitt@womenridersnow.com.

Close Up On Alligator Bob Seat

I never worked with Alligator Bob, one of the masters of upholstery work for custom bikes. The reason is that I am very faithful to my vendors and never change if I am satisfied by their work. So, it means that I know a lot of good people that I never used but that I respect a lot just by looking at their production. Alligator Bob custom makes seats and bags in many different styles, materials and skins and shows a great sense of design by the way he lays out his pattern. Like with all upholstery shops if you live far away from his shop in Illinois, you will have to send your seat pan (you can make it out of poured fiberglass, or have a custom shop make it for you locally). Then he will cut the foam (at your specific comfort zone), then will propose to you one of his exotic skins or fine leather or even vinyl. Intricate work as on this picture and hand tooling for pure retro look are also in his wide range of skills. Alligator Bob.

Cam Am Spyder. Not For Me.

Is it a motorcycle, a snowmobile or a sports car? My opinion is none of them. And to tell you the triuh I scratch my head trying to figure out who is going to order and ride (drive) this.  A Canadian company called Bombardier just announced the production of the 2008 Cam Am Spyder. It is futuristic, fast powered by a106-horsepower 990 cc Rotax, with 2 front wheels equipped with165/65R14 tires, and 1 rear wheek dressed with a 225/50R15 rubber. Although it has the sophisticated technology of a sports car (power steering, antilock brakes, electronic brakeforce distribution and electronic stability control with anti-rollover technology), I think it is the opposite of sexy motoring. Maybe fun to race other ATV’s in the great white of Canada. But I live in Florida. Bombardier Spyder.

The Truth About Motorcycle Websites Traffic.

There is a lot of confusion about real traffic of websites. This confusion is created both by some website owners not having a clear understanding of their statistics and some others making false claims because they think that their real statistics cannot be verified. This last category is most often composed or website owners trying to make money through advertisers. Free programs like Webalyser give false hugely inflated statistics because they are unable to distinguish human visits from computer visits generated by robot machines from search engines traveling the Web 24/7. A lot of people bragging about their statistics are even confusing (voluntarely or not) real visits with clicks and hits. There are different ways to measure the quality, relevance, popularity and credibilty of a website and it would be too long to explain them all here in this post. As an example, Google considered the best search engine in the world (67% of all searches) ranks its results on 2 main criteria (the others are secret): relevance of a website content to a topic (key words you entered), and popularity (number of links incoming only from other top ranked quality websites). Google eliminates sites with poor and/or unreliable content. Google is even smart enough to detect and penalize websites with fake visits created manually or with a clicks machine (computer(s) instructed to hit a homepage) by the site owner or accomplices. Being top ranked by Google (in the top 5 results) is the most prized marketing position in the internet sphere. SEO people (Search Engine Optimization) make a living trying to get these high results for their clients. Being ranked at the top creates huge traffic to a website, increasing exponentially the number of relevant (or qualified for purchase) visitors. Since 3 years, Cyril Huze Customs is ranked by Google # 1 in the world for the search  “Custom Harley-Davidson” and # 3 in the world for the search “Custom Motorcycles”. Go to Google and try it. Another independent company called Alexa, observes traffic with its own methodology and ranks the most popular websites in different categories. Cyril Huze Customs is ranked again # 1 in the world in the category “Motorcycle Customizing” (check all results Here). Cyril Huze Customs is ranked # 3 in the world in the category “Harley-Davidson” (check all results Here). It is important to mention that Cyril Huze Webstore and Cyril Huze Blog are both part of the same website Cyril Huze Customs, although these web pages can be accessed directly. Next time a website owner throws at you big traffic numbers check them out attentively. It will make internet a better digital world. Make sure they are 1- real visitors 2- relevant to your objectives (like with any media, quality of readership is as important as quantity). For more info go to page Advertise. And yes, we will accept a few more selected advertisers.

Update February 16, 2007. Cyril Huze is now ranked # 1 in Google both for internet search "Custom Motorcycles" and "Custom Harley-Davidson".

Complete Sprocket Brake Drive Kit

I remember the time, just a few years ago, when it was almost impossible to find in the US a sprocket drive kit where the brake pinches directly on the chain sprocket. You had to order it from Tolle in Sweden. Then Pat Kennedy imported some, then Exile Cycles & HHI in the US made their own, and with the old school style in full swing you have now the choice between almost 10 manufacturers. When I stopped at the V-Twin Expo booth of 3 Guyz Customs, I saw their new system and checked what they had to offer. First, their setup can be ordered for either 530 or 630 O-Ring chain. Second, they offer a double-acting true opposing piston caliper design and use Lyndall racing “Z” pads for a superior coefficient of friction. Third, they propose a full kit (in both left & right side transmission) including not only the brake, sprockets, anchors but also the chain (530 or 630) and transmission sprockets in 21, 22, and 23 tooth with .310", .500" and .820" offset. One source for all your Sprocket Brake Drive components is always good both pros and garage builders. 3 Guyz Customs.

Tauer Machine New Warlord Open Belt System

There is always room for improvement to make your starting easier, quieter and more reliable when you use an after-market open belt system. Tauer Machine® just introduced a new quite affordable 3” open belt primary called the “Warlord”. This open belt system has some new features. Gear ratio closer to stock gear ratio (to facilitate starts with big inch motors). The clutch basket is completely redesigned using Premium Alto’s Red Eagle material. Standard setup comes with 7 fibers and can be upgraded to 9 by adding 2 more fibers and changing the pressure plate. The Warlod is provided standard with a diaphragm clutch spring and a Gates 8mm belt. A new 3 pc spring loaded starter jackshaft provides superior engagement and reduces grind at start up. One piece billet 6061-T6 motor plate is available in polish, black wrinkle or chrome. 3/8” thick billet outer cover plate is provided with 2 domed covers and the rear one can be switched out for any 5 bolt derby cover. And it’s made in the USA! Check it out at Tauer Machine. or call 888-345-2135.

Down Main Street Video Camera

Daytona Bike Week is only 3 weeks away. And I know I am going to see a lot of you cruising with a passenger to who you ordered to video shoot everything you are passing by.  I know, rally videos make good memories (and also enrage your friends who could not make it under the sun).  But how many times I saw a camera dropping from the hands of a sweet heart? Or worse couples about to fall because motorcycles were not conceived to have passengers do acrobatics. So, here the solution.  Attach this very light All Terrain Camera to your helmet. It captures video clips with sound and you can select 3 levels of resolution (pick the highest when you see me on one of my customs).  It has 32 MB internal memory with USB interface A/V out interface. The good thing is that the camera is water resistant up to 10 feet (yes, it rains in Florida but not up to this point). Not bad for $315.  For sale at Oregon Scientific

Play The Spade Look

This Spade tag light is mine, and objectively (yes, I am objective) not many others that I would like to install on my custom bikes. In addition it features a 2-function LED light because I like to incorporate together the run & brake lights and hate to have to change filament bulbs breaking every month because of vibrations. Kit includes frame, backing plate and all necessary hardware. Wire track is hidden for a very clean look. Machining is out of 6061-T6 billet aluminum and beautifully chrome plated. 12 different brackets are available, including one that you can use with open belt systems. Pick the one corresponding to the installation you prefer. Hey, it perfectly complements my Spade velocity. Order in my Webstore.

Hardstreet Saddle Bags For Fatboys And Softails

Since not many of us can own at the same time both a street bike and a dresser for the long trips (depending of where you live) to Daytona or Sturgis I think it’s a pretty good idea to offer saddle bags that you can mount on a Harley Fat Boy or Softail. A company called Cycra Hardstreet offers injection molded bags (no risk of fiberglass smell on your clothing) and of course easy to install black powder coated brackets. The bags look cool, have 1800 cubic inch of space, feature push button keyed locks and are provided either in ultra high gloss painted finish, or matching any factory color, or primed ready to receive your custom graphics. Hardstreet.

Fuel Tank preparation & Restoration. I Warned You.

It always amazes me when I visit one of my painters to see how many gas tanks brought in by shops or garage builders are not sealed correctly. We all heard horror stories or saw the damage created by rusted, improperly sealed gas tanks. How much did you pay for this artwork? Of course any gas tank, new, old or built from scratch must be first pressure tested. And you are better off not to expect fixing bad welds and even tiny pinholes simply by coating inside. If you think a leak can happen, it will happen. Time is never on your side. Vibrations & physic of liquid work together against you. There are several very good methods and products to prepare your tank before giving it to your painter. I use the 3-step system of POR-15 and never had any problem whatsoever (my paint jobs are quite/very expensive). A cleaner/degreaser, a metal-ready and a rust-preventive coating (even in the color you want if it matters to you). It’s simple, efficient & strong. I know  nobody who likes to spend time doing this. But improper sealing is probably one of the most costly mistakes you can make when building a bike. Don’t forget to read the instructions. Maybe you are going to make a mistake, like coating over coating, which will result in the last coat peeling and swimming in the fuel. Well, take your time to read before sealing. POR-15.

Arlen Ness King Of Choppers

The book is a retrospective of the motorcycle art of Arlen Ness and is written & photographed by not less famous Michael Lichter. Is it easier or more difficult to talk about people that I know pretty well? Let’s see. I started my career with only one reference. A motorcycle builder & parts designer called Arlen Ness. His bikes and business smart was already an inspiration for one generation before I even appeared on the custom motorcycles scene. We met and rapidly spent time together when preparing a hard cover book featuring our bikes called “Customizing The Legend”. Yes, he has a very nice personality, had already at that time done almost everything that can be done in the name of motorcycle art, and gave me the best advice anyone can receive “hard work is as good as talent”. At the same time I also met with Michael Lichter. He shot my first bikes for Easyriders and now defunct VQ Magazine.  When we finish our assembly work and put our wrenches away, nothing can make a custom motorcycle looking better than the photography of Michael. And it is not necessary to show him the details of your work. He will find them right away, and on film (or digital) will make them even more beautiful than you ever thought. So, when you mix the talent of both men, you get a reference motorcycle art book covering almost 40 years of constant design innovation. A must read and keep. Order at Arlen Ness King Of Choppers.

Michelin Supplier For Harley-Davidson.

As you can see Bibendum, the Michelin Man, is very happy. Harley-Davidson Motor Company announced that it will add Michelin as an official supplier of replacement tires for its motorcycles. Beginning mid-year, Michelin® motorcycle tires will be available at all Harley-Davidson dealerships across North America. Michelin has been manufacturing tires for motorcycles as long as motorcycles have existed. In fact, Michelin invented the radial motorcycle tire back in 1987. If you build/restore your own bike and want to ride on a set of Bibendom tires, you can make your own selection by going to the official Michelin USA Motorcycle Tires website.

New Vicious Cycle Works Bars

I have been in contact with Thomas Davanzo a few years ago when he started his business of very radical custom handlebars. He was nice enough to ask me for some advice (What do you think? How should I sell?). Since then, his company has grown rapidly, offering the industry many exotic designs working well on raked out choppers. His new release is front of you and no, it will not poke your eyes. They are called the Venom-FX and work well on bikes with 42 to 55-degree rake. They are made out of 304 stainless steel, tig welded with the welds disappearing after an 8-stage polishing process. Nice. Vicious Cycle Works sells online.

Watch The Last BBO In A Visor Mounted DVD

When I saw this gadget, I thought that all of you driving long distances from rallies to rallies could be interested.  It is an interesting product to fight the boredom of endless highways. It’s a visor mounted DVD player with FM transmitter and you can watch (passengers only, please) the last episode of Biker Build Off,  or red hot work-out porn or anything else from the comfort of the bucket seats of your GMC, Ford or Dodge truck. It features a slim 7” LCD screen, DVD/CD player, VCD, CD, MP3, CD-R, CD-RW. On top of that, there is also an SD card reader and even a USB port to plug in your computer. But that’s not even where the features end! The Sun Visor Theater comes with a built-in TV Tuner (Receiver). Wow! All this is pretty good for the price of an average air filter $299.95.
