Renewable Fuels Association Releases Key Information on Ethanol Use in Motorcycles

RFA2The Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) released a fact sheet specifically for motorcycle owners answering common questions about E15 (85 percent gasoline/15 percent ethanol) and motorcycle engines. The document entitled “E15 and the Motorcycle Industry” makes it clear that E15 is illegal to put into a motorcycle engine, but E10 is approved for use.

The fact sheet addresses questions such as: • What is the concern with E15 and the motorcycle industry? • What is being done to assist the motorcycle industry with these concerns? • How will consumers identify the appropriate fuel for their vehicle/engine. Motorcycle Parts Website

Second Edition Of Wheels And Waves. Great Images And Beautiful Friendship.

Two childhood friends share the same passion for motorcycles. They create a successful website with images of classic and custom motorcycles, meet other friends, create the “Southsiders” and organize in 2012 a first group ride called “Wheels & Waves”, destination Biarritz, the French capital of surfing. Why? Because motorcycling and surfing are about freedom… They produced a superb short video about their first group ride, the camaraderie on the road that I featured last year and that you enjoyed very much. From June 13 to 16 they rode again to Biarritz for the second edition of Wheels And Waves. This time a much larger group of individuals and at arrival a festival honoring the work of European and American artists. Another event, another interesting video about friends just being friends and having a good time sharing the same passion. .

In 2013 What Is The Average Age Of A Harley-Davidson Buyer?

cyrilhuzehd11You all know that Harley-Davidson has a demographic problem, their core customers still being the white boomers, a group obviously decreasing in size. In 2008, the company began an aggressive outreach campaign to appeal to the Generation X (all those born after 1964 by Census Bureau’s definition), women and minorities. Recently, I reported that for five years running, a research from RL Polk, a leading provider of auto industry data, is showing that Harley is the USA market leader among riders ages 18 to 34, as well as women, African-Americans and Hispanics.

cyrilhuzehd22But does it really mean that the average age of a Harley buyer is going down? Yes, says Harley Marketing Director Mark-Hans Richer in an interview with Reuters, stating that for the 1st time in 2012, the company average buyer is 47 (born in 1965, 1 year later that the youngest baby-boomers), so is no more a boomer.

Prior to 2009, Harley regularly reported data on the company average buyer age. In 1999, Harley stated that the average rider age was 43.4, then 46.1 in 2004, and 48 in 2008. A controversy got started because Harley-Davidson stopped publishing this average age data with the justification “that it doesn’t measure the outreach effort.” Most analysts accept Harley-Davidson’s claims that the outreach is working and that the company is a turnaround story. But Robin Farley an analyst at UBS who has covered Harley-Davidson for a decade, says that until the company stopped routinely disclosing the number, the average buyer age was rising steadily at a rate of about 6 months every year since at least 1999, and that consequently the average Harley buyer is now 50, so still a boomer. Harley-Davidson New Retro-Styled Helmets

HDHelmet1HDHelmet2HDHelmet3Of course, it was expected that Harley-Davidson would release its own line of the now extremely popular retro-styled helmet.

They feature Double D-ring fastening system and a premium soft inner-liner completed with microbial treatment and faux leather accents.

Candy paint designs were inspired by Harley own flake paint jobs reminiscent of those popular in the 60’s and 70’s. Looking To Organize The First Harley FXR’s Only Exhibition And Bike Show In Sturgis

hdfxr1The FXR with a chassis, where engine is rubber mounted, is still considered by many the best handling motorcycle Harley-Davidson has ever produced. It has also been a long time custom builders favorite. The FXR has gained new found glory over the last couple of years with young motorcycle customizers rebuilding and customizing them, motorcycle stunt riders, club riders and more riders bringing them back to life. Joe Mielke from Klock Werks would love to be able to create an FXR Bike Show and Exhibition during the upcoming Sturgis Bike Week.  I publish his letter below.

“I’m putting on a FXR Motorbike Show during the Sturgis Rally. It would be great if you could help put the word out. I am in need of participants and sponsors. The Harley Davidson FXR, in the 80’s and the early 90’s was the bike of choice for club riders, custom bike builders, touring riders, Motor Patrol Officers and it was Harley’s work horse. o many Harley Davidson enthusiasts, it is arguably the best handling Harley ever built. The first true American sport bike.  Last year during the Sturgis Rally, someone traded in a 1991 FXR for a new motorcycle at Black Hills Harley Davidson. Everyday working at the Klock Werks show rig I would sneak away and check the bone yard to see what was traded in the day before. Well, on the last day of the rally, my FXR was in the lot. I struck a deal on a price without taking it for a test ride or even turning the key. I was pumped. The first time I rode it was after we tore down the show truck before leaving for home. Ford Kills The Ford F-150 Harley-Davidson. Harley-Davidson fans are disappointed. Although no official reason is given, the special edition Ford F-150 Harley-Davidson is been discontinued. This model was released for the 1st time in 1999 and was the top of the line, most expensive. 2013 model year F-150 is offered at the price of $50,905, the F-250 Super Duty Platinum priced at $54,235. Both models are on tap for the 2014 model year. The 2 Harley-Davidson models have never accounted for more than 1 to 2 percent of Ford’s F-150 line-up sales.

Pennsylvania Legislation Allowing The Vertical Display Of Regisration Plates On motorcycles.  It was passed by the state House and now heads to the Senate. Currently, the state vehicle code does not specify how a vehicle registration plate may be mounted. However, regulations in Title 67 of the Pennsylvania Code require horizontal mounting of vehicle registration plates and do not give the option for vertical mounting. House Bill would also authorize the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to produce, upon request, registration plates for motorcycles, which display the identifying characters in a vertical alignment. Penn DOT may charge an additional fee of $20 to issue of those plates, in addition to the regular annual registration fee of $18. Continue reading ‘Fast Motorcycle Industry News’

Indian Motorcycle Will Introduce The All-New 2014 Indian Chiefs In Sturgis August 3. Weeklong Schedule Of Events.

IndianSturgisPatchIt’s probably the most highly anticipated and historic motorcycling event in decades: the reveal of the all-new 2014 Indian® Chief®. Two and a half years in the making, the reveal party will be Saturday, August 3, 8 p.m., 999 Main Street, Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame located at the corner of Junction and Main Street. The event is free of charge and features live music, celebrity appearances including Mike Wolfe of HISTORY’s wildly popular television series, American Pickers, interviews with Indian Motorcycle team members, a multimedia tribute to Indian Motorcycle’s history and more.

“Indian Motorcycle found it fitting to unveil the new Indian Motorcycle at Sturgis given its heritage at this signature motorcycle event,” said Vice President of Polaris Motorcycles Steve Menneto.” He added: “The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally was started in 1936 by the local Indian Motorcycle club, the Jackpine Gypsies, and has grown to become the world’s largest motorcycle rally, drawing riders from across the globe. Our team has put their hearts and souls into the design and development of the 2014 Indian Chief. Sturgis is the perfect place to unveil the next generation of Indian motorcycles and share the message that choice in American motorcycling is finally here in the form of the stunning new Indian Chief.”

Today’s news follows the company’s May announcement that the completely redesigned 2014 Indian Chief, powered by the new Thunder Stroke™ 111 engine, will start at $18,999. A short, sneak peek video of the New 2014 Indian Chief is available on the Indian Motorcycle website. As part of the build-up to the Indian Motorcycle launch, Indian continues its “Choice” campaign with a new broadcast spot called “Bike Wash” (because of music licensing rights restriction I can’t publish the version with Willie Nelson song “On The Road Again”)

The company also announced a weeklong schedule of events designed to introduce the motorcycle community to the new Indian Chief. The full schedule of activities at multiple locations, including a display at 2nd and Lazelle Street in downtown Sturgis, displays, demo rides and parties is available after the jump. S&S Cycle Celebrates 55 Years Going Fast. Saying Thank You.

1George-J.-Smith-Stanley-Stankos2Marjorie-Smith-on-Merle-Smith's-1941---circa-1941What started as a passion for speed, grew into the best known company name in the V-Twin high performance aftermarket. George Smith Sr. had to build his own parts to make his motorcycle faster. Now the company he founded manufactures the most prestigious line of “go fast” v-twin engine parts in the world. S&S Cycle was started in the basement of his home in Blue Island IL in 1958, and moved to Viola, WI in 1969. In 2004 an additional facility was opened in LaCrosse, WI.

Yesterday, I got a chance to visit the very impressive manufacturing plant in Viola, WI and also to experience the newly remodeled S&S museum (open during business hours nearly anytime during the year) telling you the story of S&S Cycle from the 1940’s to the present day. Historically significant motorcycles, machines, trophies, and memorabilia, along with familiar and never seen before photographs, give the visitor a sense of the hard work, perseverance, and innovation that made S&S what it is today.

First, a video to say thank you to S&S. Then, below the video, I am glad to share with you the timeline and some of the historic pictures provided to me by S&S Cycle management with a couple more I took during my visit at the Viola plant (picture legends at end of this feature)

4George-J.-Smith-drawing-blue-prints---circa-19791950s. Tramp/Chicago. George Smith dominated the drag strips around the Chicago area on Tramp, his 80 cubic inch Knucklehead.

1952. George Smith Sr. With the support of his family, George Smith Sr. built the special racing parts he needed to win the trophies proudly displayed on this 1952 photo.

SS151954 Bonneville Salt Flats. In 1954 George Smith rode his Knucklehead, Tramp, now with a 92 cubic inch engine to a speed record of 152.02 mph at the Bonneville salt flats.

1958 Pushrods The first product that George Smith and Stanly Stankos offered for sale in 1958, was a set of light weight aluminum pushrods that converted hydraulic tappets to solid lifters. This upgrade in the valve train of stock engines of that day resulted in the ability to operate at higher rpm resulting in more available power.

5George-J.-Smith-assembles-carbs---circa-19681958 S&S formed. George Smith (S) and Stanley Stankos (S), offically started the company in Blue Island, Illinois, a suburb just south of Chicago.  A year later George and his wife Marge,  bought Stanley’s interest in the business and began to run S&S out of the basement of their Blue Island home.

1959. Marjorie Smith, First Lady of Fast Motorcycles A large portion of the credit for the success of S&S® Cycle belongs to Marge Smith. A fact that is often overlooked, is that Marge Smith was a full partner in the business with her husband George. George’s technical skill and his accomplishments at the race track often overshadow her contributions to the business. Marge was a rider herself, so she was no stranger to the sport or the people who pursue it. She definitely pulled her own weight as she took care of the office chores and did the bookkeeping, but she also worked in the shop and could talk tech with the best of them. Long time S&S customers remember her with fondness and respect, and more than a few chauvinistic male callers were surprised and perhaps a little chagrined to have their technical problems solved over the phone for them by a woman. After George Sr.’s death in 1980, it was Marge’s strong will, leadership, and knowledge that kept the company on track and growing well into the 1990s.

7George-B.-Smith-machining-flywheels---circa-19681967. Carbs. The release of the first S&S carburetor in 1967 offered a much simpler and more cost effective way to go fast.

1969. Speed. Quoted on the cover of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth’s Choppers Magazine in 1969, Smith said it most simply himself— “I want to make all bikes go faster.” This is precisely what George Smith spent the major part of his life doing – making Harley-Davidson® motorcycles faster. This basic idea of going faster was the motivation behind many of George Smith’s endeavors—not greed, fame, or success—simply going faster on Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

8S&S-machine-shop-Viola---circa-19791969. Viola, Wis. Despite a ful-time job and the demands of a fledging business, George and Marge felt drawn to the countyside and the tug of another passion—farming and ranching. Family trips took them through the Kickapoo River Valley, a scenic area sometimes called God’s Country. They were so taken with the beauty of the land, that they vowed to settle here when they found the right spot. Which they did in 1969. The Smith family home, nestled in a wooded valley just outside Viola, Wisconsin, became the site of the S&S Ranch as well as the new company headquarters for S&S Cycle.

1970 Fuel Wizard. In 1970 George Smith helped the Harley-Davidson sponsored streamliner achieve a 265.492 mph land speed record, and earned himself the title of “Fuel Wizard” for his knowledge of nitro burning engines. Continue reading ‘S&S Cycle Celebrates 55 Years Going Fast. Saying Thank You.’

Postcards From S&S Cycle 55th Anniversary.

I am in Wisconsin, home state of S&S Cycle, participating to their 55th anniversary celebration both at the Viola manufacturing plant and the La Crosse distribution center. Born in 1958, S&S Cycle has been in the business of conceiving, designing and producing high quality, high performance engine components – now including mufflers – for the last 55 years. Founder George J. Smith had to build his own parts to make his motorcycles go faster. And it became and never stopped to be the company philosophy: to manufacture the most prestigious line of GO FAST V-Twin engine parts. In a following post, I will retrace the history of S&S Cycle. Waiting for it, a few postcards of day 1 of the 55th celebration. Legends below series of pictures

Changing Fork Fluid On Touring Models. A Pain No More.

JIMS_VacuumFrom JIMS USA another “time saver” to do the job right and fast. If you ever tried, the job of changing the fork fluid on models with fairings can be intimidating and take hours.

This patent pending tool will eliminate the need to remove the fairings on all touring bikes to change the fork oil.  With the Jim’s Vacuum Fed Fork Filling Tool it should take about 30 minutes to perform the service compared to 2.2 hours without it.

To drain the fork, simply insert the tapered fitting into the drain hole and create a vacuum using a standard Mityvac hand pump. Once you reach approximately 23 lbs. of vacuum pressure rotate the valve and instantly the vacuum will draw the pre-measured amount of fork fluid into the fork tube.

Use on all common damper tube type fork assembly. Warning: this tool is not for use on motorcycles using cartridge type forks or inverted fork assemblies. This tool is designed for use in conjunction with a Mityvac tool No. 741, which is available separately.  For more information contact Jim’s USA at sales@jimsusa.com or call 805-482-6913.
