DP Custom Cycles Challenge. The 10 Best Designed Concept Motorcycles.

With the help of Local Motors, a crowd-powered automotive design, manufacturing and technology group, the Del Prado brothers (Justin and Jarrod) – the partners of Arizona-based DP Custom Cycless – challenged participants to submit motorcycle concepts based on the 2000-2003 Harley Davidson Sportster.

After an intense design review of more than 200 submissions, the winning concept, the DP Racer by Andre Costa of Portugal, was hand-selected by the founders of DP Custom Cycles (see video at end of article.) Andre’s design was selected because of its overall “beautiful design, clean, classic lines, and the truly amazing air intake that the Del Prado brothers really wish they would have thought of. DP Cycles will now bring this bike to life, with completion date stated for 3rd week of July.

First place, and a $2,000 cash prize, will be awarded to Andre Costa (aka Lude) from Portugal, for his winning design, the DP Racer. Second and third place prizes of $1,350 and $950, respectively, will be awarded to Oberdan Bezz (aka OBIBOI) of Italy for his stock car-inspired Talladega concept, and to Marc Senger (aka sixten), from the United States, for his 1960s NASA-themed concept, the DP Customs Lander. Fourth through tenth place finalists will each receive a $100 cash prize.

“Best Ink” is an American reality competition series on Oxygen. The series premiered on March 27, 2012 and was renewed in 2013. The TV show follows a group of 10 tattoo artists from various cities in the US with the winner of the competition winning a $100,000 cash prize and a cover article in a tattoo magazine. Harley-Davidson 2013 First-Quarter Earnings Increased 33.8% Versus Last Year

Thanks to an ongoing restructuring started in 2009, Harley has been expanding its profitability. Today before Wall Street opening, Harley-Davidson released its 1st quarter 2013 results. Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE: HOG) diluted earnings per share increased 33.8% on higher motorcycle shipments and continued improvement in operating efficiencies, compared to the year-ago period. “With our focus on continuous improvement throughout our operations and providing outstanding products and customer experiences, we have continued to deliver gains in Harley-Davidson’s financial and competitive performance,” said Keith Wandell, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Harley-Davidson, Inc.

Retail Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Sales: Dealers worldwide sold 54,254 new Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the first quarter of 2013 compared to 59,677 motorcycles in the year-ago quarter. In the U.S., dealers sold 34,706 new Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the quarter, down 12.7% compared to the year-ago period which the Company believes benefited from accelerated sales due to abnormally warm early spring weather in the U.S. In international markets, dealers sold 19,548 new Harley-Davidson motorcycles during the first quarter, compared to 19,915 motorcycles in the year-ago period, with unit sales up 11.5% in the Asia Pacific region and 6.2% in the Latin America region, and down 10.8% in the EMEA region and 0.4% in Canada. Industry-wide U.S. heavyweight new motorcycle (601cc-plus) retail unit sales decreased 16.5% compared to last year’s first quarter. The Company has adjusted its definition of heavyweight motorcycles to 601cc-plus from the prior definition of 651cc-plus, to better align with the current U.S. industry definition.

Harley-Davidson recently reported newly available U.S. demographic market share data for 2012 new street motorcycle sales (all engine displacements) showing the Company continued its market leadership in the U.S. among young adults 18-34, women, African-Americans, Hispanics and Caucasian men 35-plus. According to the Polk data, in 2012, for the fifth straight year, Harley-Davidson was the number one seller of new street motorcycles in the U.S. to each of these groups. Sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the U.S. grew in each of these demographic segments last year, and Harley-Davidson sold nearly twice as many new street motorcycles to young adults as its nearest competitor in 2012. “We believe our continued market leadership in these customer segments demonstrates the strong and growing appeal of our products and brand across generations and cultures,” said Wandell.

“In 2012, nearly four in ten sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the U.S. were to customers who are new to the brand. Outside the U.S., two-thirds of sales were to customers new to the brand. And nearly six in ten sales worldwide were to customers outside our traditional U.S. base of Caucasian men 35-plus. We believe our strategy to expand our reach to new customers and market segments in the U.S. and internationally, while also growing the base, holds tremendous opportunity for Harley-Davidson’s future,” Wandell said. Polaris Reports Record First Quarter 2013 Results. Net Income Increased 26%.

On Wednesday April 24, after the bell, Polaris announced its 1st quarter 2013 results. Net income increased 26% to $75.5 million, or $1.07 per diluted share, with sales increasing 11% to $745.9 million, setting new records for first quarter sales and earnings. By comparison, 2012 first quarter net income was $60.1 million, or $0.85 per diluted share. Net sales for the first quarter 2013 totaled $745.9 million, which represents an increase of 11% from last year’s first quarter sales of $673.8 million. There was a decrease in Victory cruisers and touring sales versus 1st quarter of last year attributed to exceptionally warm weather on the US during winter 2012.

“While Off-Road Vehicles (ORVs) and motorcycles faced challenging 2012 comparisons, we were again able to outpace the industry and increase market share in both product lines,” said Scott Wine, Polaris chairman and CEO. “Our snowmobile business also generated strong retail sales and market share growth during the first quarter.”. Harley-Davidson Number One USA Seller Of New street Motorcycles To Young Adults 18-34, Women, African-Americans And Hispanics, Caucasians Over 35.

For the fifth straight year, Harley-Davidson was the number one seller of new street motorcycles (all engine sizes) in the United States to young adults ages 18-34, women, African-Americans and Hispanics, as well as Caucasian men ages 35 plus. The newly available POLK data shows that Harley-Davidson experienced a double-digit market share gain from 2008 to 2012 in the U.S. with these customer groups.

Harley-Davidson Chief Marketing Officer Mark-Hans Richer attributes the company’s success to its unique purpose. “We don’t just build motorcycles. We fuel personal freedom,” said Richer. “The desire for individual expression draws customers from all walks of life because it’s a universal, human value that transcends cultures, generations and history.”

In 2012, sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles grew in each of the company’s key U.S. customer segments.

Altogether, Harley-Davidson’s U.S. sales to young adults, women, African Americans and Hispanics grew at more than twice the rate of sales to Caucasian men 35 plus. 2013 Laughlin River Run. April 24th-28th.

Stated by the organizers as the largest motorcycle event on the west coast, the 31st edition of the Laughlin River Run starts this Wednesday April 24th and will end Sunday 28th. One of the main attractions for many visitors to this rally will be to see Historic US Route 66 the way it was meant to be seen and to ride the hills from Kingman to Oatman, Arizona. Indian Motorcycle Marketing Strategy

Choice is coming to American motorcycles. Are you of the Harley-Davidson or Indian Motorcycle type? Of both? It is my opinion that the motorcycle industry needs another high profile American motorcycle brand and that the Indian launch will positively disrupt the market, growing our industry, creating a healthy competition primarily with Harley-Davidson and marginally with other V-Twin brands, American or foreign.

Let me first mention that all decision-makers and strategists involved in the Indian Motorcycle re-launch – I talked several times to most of them – have the highest respect for Harley-Davidson. They also know that by offering very soon another American choice to bikers they are going to re-activate the pre-1953 rivalry, both on the road and on the track. I don’t know anyone, biker or professional from the industry complaining about an up-coming competition between the two brands.

During the last 50 years motorcycling has become socially respectable. In the ’90s, for whatever reasons (I may develop this topic in another post), the upper class of lawyers, doctors, real estate developers, dentists, etc started to ride expensive Harleys, playing the biker outlaws on weekends and during a couple of big rallies like Daytona and Sturgis. Harley-Davidson sold a lot of bikes to them until many Rich Urban Bikers looked for other ways to have fun. Then in 2008, the US recession hit hard with Harley-Davidson realizing that its core clientele was soon getting too old to ride, and started courting not only younger potential bikers, but also pursuing all sort of hobbyists in many social categories, either women, latinos, blacks. In addition, Harley started focusing its efforts on foreign markets like Asia to compensate for what Harley sees as a very low potential for growth in the USA, probably for the next 10 years. It is well known that many core Harley bikers, right or wrong, feel alienated by Milwaukee’s last years strategy (and it includes foreign made parts assembled on its “American” motorcycles) and would abandon Harley for another American brand like Indian if the opportunity was given to them…

In this context, can Polaris seriously compete with Harley-Davidson with its new Indian model(s)? No denial that Harley is and will remain a legend. But the Indian brand remains iconic around the world despite the fact that the final production run of the final genuine Indians (the Blackhawk, a version of the side-valve 80-inch Chief) came in 1953. Also despite several failed attempts to re-launch the brand. After 60 years of “silence”, in terms of “good will” towards the brand, Indian is at least as powerful, if not more, than Harley is. With the right bikes, it says a lot about the potential of Indian to rival with Harley-Davidson motorcycle and biker gear offering. Continue reading ‘Indian Motorcycle Marketing Strategy’

Moderate Indonesia Arrested 35 Women For Straddling Motorcycles In Tight Pants. These women received a warning after the Shariah police caught them straddling a motorcycle and not wearing appropriate Islamic dress. Police monitor the administration’s bylaw that prohibits female passengers from straddling motorcycles.

House Committee Approves Ethanol Study Bill. The United States House of Representatives Committee on Science, Space, and Technology approved a bill that would require the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to conduct a comprehensive study on the E-15 gasoline fuel blends. The committee approved the bill, HR 875, by a vote of 18-17. Committee Chairman had this to say, “Time and again, we see instances where American businesses are unnecessarily harmed by the EPA’s regulatory and political agenda.” Both the American Petroleum Institute and the Environmental Working Group, two organizations that do not often agree, back Mr. Sensenbrenner’s E15 bill. The American Automobile Association (AAA), as well as groups representing snowmobile, boat and motorcycle owners also support the bill.

S&S Cycle Celebrates Its 55th Anniversary And You Are Invited.

On Friday June 21st and Saturday June 22nd, 2013 S&S Cycle will celebrate their 55th anniversary this and they would like like everyone to join them for the celebration party. It will take place at the Oktoberfest grounds in La Crosse, Wisconsin, with a side trip to the S&S factory in Viola for breakfast, plant and museum tours, and rides through the beautiful hills of the “driftless area” of southwest Wisconsin.

There’ll be live music, featuring Foghat and The Outlaws and including the Eric Tessmer Band, vendor displays, traditional Wisconsin brats and beer, and a bike show featuring five student-built bikes. But if you follow the work of Bryan Schimke at TPJ Customs you will realize that “Mindy” has a direct filiation with the more “classic” creations that the shop has built. Same very naked/bony bikes with a lot of one-off parts (but a minimum of them belonging to the assembly) machined to perfectly match this type of sanitary design. J&P Cycles 34th Annual Open House Rally Is June 29-30, 2013

Each June among the cornfields in Eastern Iowa one of the largest two day motorcycle events in the Midwest takes place. The small town of Anamosa, Iowa with a population of approximately 5,500, home to the J&P Cycles headquarters, hosts the annual J&P Cycles Open House Rally. Last year more than 30,000 motorcyclists and spectators converged on J&P to attend this fun-filled family event.

For 2013, more than 110 motorcycle vendors will be onsite displaying the latest and greatest motorcycle merchandise, including 20 semis. See two of the stars from the hit television show Sons of Anarchy, Ryan Hurst who plays Harry “Opie” Winston and Tommy Flanagan who plays Filip “Chibs” Telford. 1 Wheel Revolution will again perform a variety of stunts for those in attendance. Joke Of The Week

An attorney arrived home late, after a very tough day trying to get a stay of execution. His last minute plea for clemency to the governor had failed and he was feeling worn out and depressed.

As soon as he walked through the door at home, his wife started on him about, “What time of night to be getting home is this?” “Where have you been?” “Dinner is cold and I’m not reheating it.” And on and on and on.
Too shattered to play his usual role in this familiar ritual, he poured himself a shot of whiskey and headed off for a long hot soak in the bathtub, pursued by the predictable sarcastic remarks as he dragged himself up the stairs.

While he was in the bath, the phone rang. The wife answered and was told that her husband’s client, James Wright, had been granted a stay of execution after all. Wright would not be hanged tonight. Finally realizing what a terrible day he must have had, she decided to go upstairs and give him the good news.

As she opened the bathroom door, she was greeted by the sight of her husband, bent over naked, drying his legs and feet. “They’re not hanging Wright tonight,” she said.

He whirled around and screamed, “FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WOMAN, DON’T YOU EVER STOP?”
