The Secret Life Of Rick Fairless
Published by January 12th, 2011 in Builders, Customs and Editorial. There is not such a thing as a typical Custom Builder profile. And if you want another proof of it, just read about Rick Fairless’ background and how it led him to create a Texas Biker Lifestyle Empire (bikes, booze and tattoos). Calling himself a “Lucky Chump from Texas”, Rick is both a colorful character (as colorful as his well known custom built bikes and trademark tie-dye tee-shirts) and a very serious businessman, probably one of the hardest working men in the custom motorcycle industry.
It’s in Irving, a suburb north of Dallas, that Rick was born, raised and got its first taste of riding motorcycles with his high school friends. At the age of 19 his first job was for his uncle who owned a chain of paint stores called Roach Paint Co. He worked his way up the company ladder from stock boy to order puller to truck driver to manager of the Irvine store which became, under his management, the number one store in the company. Then he was transferred into outside sales to score being the number 1 salesman in the company. Then, when giant Glidden bought out Roach Paint Co. Rick remained, kept his title of best salesman but got tired of the big company corporate life.
A biker since his teenage years, Rick always fantasized about owning his own motorcycle shop, applied without any real hope to become an Easyriders Motorcycles franchisee, and after hitting many roadblocks, got approved to open Easyriders Dallas. It was year 1996 and right away Rick displayed his unique personality by doing exactly the opposite of what all other shops were doing. Opening his store in an old 30’s building, decorating it with goofy stuff, installing life size dinosaurs on the roof, and yes attracting a lot of bikers who came in drove to check out this unusual place and what its colorful owner had to offer. Right away, Rick got the idea to keep them as long as possible around him by opening a bar next door (pool tables and shuffleboard included), then later a tattoo parlor. Three friends die in a car accident. They go to an orientation in heaven. They are asked, “When you are in your casket and friends and family are mourning you, what would you like to hear them say about you?”
The first guy says, “I would like to hear them say that I was a great doctor and father.” The second man says, “I would like to hear them say I was a great family man and school teacher.” The last man says, “I would like to hear them say.”Look, he’s moving!” (sent by Rodent)
A Letter Of Jay Ridley, President Of Ridley Genuine Parts
Published by January 11th, 2011 in Builders, Customs, Editorial and Events.Jay Ridley replies to my readers regarding their comments after my article “Ridley Motorcycles Trying A Come Back ”
“Reader. I am surprised and grateful to see the continued interest in our motorcycles. In 1995, my father and I started with a dream to build the ultimate ¾ scale motorcycle. Over the company’s fourteen year history our business grew exponentially with the help of our investors, vendors, the media, service centers and of course each and every Ridley Owner and Dealer. Like every other manufacturer, we began to feel the economic conditions change when lending requirements were tightened on retail buyers in 2007. Unforunately, we were not able to make the necessary changes to keep the business funded through these tough times. This left us with several significant liabilities that created a situation we could not overcome without a swift recovery in the market. Like An Old School Bobber On Steroids…
Published by January 10th, 2011 in Builders, Customs and Editorial.I have to disclose that I didn’t write this headline. These are the words of Arlen Ness when he awarded this custom bike with the “Partner Pick Of Excellence” during the 3rd round of the AMD Championship Of Bike Building at the IMS Show held recently in Seattle, Washington. So, I asked its Builder, Robbie Kerr, a native from Scotland now living and working in Canada where he opened Kootenay Motorcycle Art, what was his inspiration for such a muscled up design. He told me that “Glasgow Kiss” was inspired by his love for the 1945 Harley Flathead and that he wanted to build its modern version, amplifying its proportions for a never seen before unique look. Did you say oversized? The frame had to accept 2 x 18″ wheels, 300 mm in the rear, 280 mm in front, and rolling Thunder was called to fabricate the very special frame with beefy 1 3/4″ tubing, a 39-degree rake and a 4″ backbone stretch. To look proportionate in the front, 2 1/2″ tubes were bended to create the Springer front end. Continue reading ‘Like An Old School Bobber On Steroids…’

Over 8000 items from the Genuine Motor Parts & accessories catalog. Then you will print your wish list and bring it to your favorite Harley dealer to finalize the design. I guess, your interlocutor’s job will be to tell you what is possible, what is compatible or not, what will look better and the final cost. To Look Retro Go Narrow. Apehangers Too.
Published by January 6th, 2011 in Builders, Controls, Customs and Editorial. It continues to surprise me that so many custom bikes using a narrow or mid-glide Springer or hydraulic front end, are mounting on them ape hangers conceived for wide-glide front ends. Yes, your bars are supposed to flow smoothly up from your front suspension system. The base of your bars is not supposed to be wider than your triple tree or top clamp.
So, it convinced me to write this post to tell those who still don’t know, that narrow apes exist. Many options are available regarding widths, heights, diameter (please don’t use over 1″ on old school bikes), in chrome or black.
One option is the choice offered by Burly Brand, with narrow apes 5″ wide at the base, 7″ pullback, 1″diameter, in 12″, 14″, 16″ height. Chrome or black. Slotted and drilled for easy internal wiring. They also sell cable kits to readjust the length of your brake and clutch lines. Burly Brand.
“Cyril, you’re more than correct about your place in the digital media universe. The “DashLink” launch on Oct 28 went viral, mostly from those who read the article in your website.
By Monday Nov 01, it was in Cape Town, South Africa, Greece, Germany, Japan, France and Italy. At the end of the day Monday, Nov 01 it was on the Wall Street Journal website.
“DashLink Docking Console” had 17,000 results by Nov 08 (many have rolled off now) I was blown away. My site traffic (also analyzed via Google Analytics) went from 36 countries to 81. Industry members not utilizing your site are really missing out. Thanks very much for the resource, accessibility and support.” Derik, Hells Foundry.

Kraft/Tech Sportster Rigid Frame.
Published by January 5th, 2011 in Builders, Chassis, Customs and Editorial. Not sure why, but I get many requests of recommendation for a clean after-market rigid Sportster frame. Drifting to the old school style? Big amount of used Sportsters on the market at a cheap price?
Since you want to know one that I like (among others), this one accepting up to a 180 mm rear tire. In it you can cradle a Sportster engines from 1986 to 2003. It’s TIG-MIG welded from 1 1/4″ tubing and available with neck rakes of 30 or 34-degree and up-stretches from 0″ to 4″ if you go the chopper route. One draw back for some, you can’t buy the frame alone, but the complete accessories kit. Kraft/Tech.
I don’t know for sure how the 1995-2005 decade will be remembered in motorcycle history books. Among many positive developments in the custom motorcycle industry, abundance of creativity and emergence of new talents. But also some less flattering components like the arrival of too many business people and companies with no motorcycle background, just jumping in because these new ventures seemed as a cool way to make fast money, no motorcycle love necessary. Do You remember how many Harley cloning manufacturing companies were created? Most gone as fast as they appeared, and this before our economic recession. A few others giving up when our economy started to hiccup.
Contrary to the already defunct companies, those few custom motorcycle manufacturing companies still active today are animated by men who were loving motorcycles well before they became shrewd business people able to manage a motorcycle company. Among these companies still with us and deserving it, Desperado Motorcycles manufacturing seven different custom motorcycle models for a total never exceeding, by choice, 300 bikes every year, a safe and smart marketing approach. To answer the requests of those wishing a pure one-off, Jeff also created Jeff Nicklus Customs building one-of-a-kind American V-Twin High Performance Motorcycles. Jeff began building bikes at age 15 in Dallas, Texas. That passion has grown later into a lucrative business with Jeff relying not only on motorcycle dealers to sell his production customs but also spending months on the road meeting directly with his potential clients.
