Like Lighting Your Cigarette With A Molotov Cocktail

These words are from Bert Baker himself. It’s the way he describes his new starter named the Firestarter. Building custom bikes with big engines, I learned a long time ago that so called performance starters have notorious reliability issues. With smaller engines, Harley-Davidson starters do fine.  But it seems that some performance starters sold as new contain rebuilt, meaning used cores. Baker listened to the complaints and released the Firestarter, a very good looking chrome & polished starter with an output of 3HP. Before being sold, each unit is tested on a dynamometer for proper function. Exactly the way it should be done before being incorporated to our custom bikes.  The Firestarter is available as a conventional remote start button type or as a manual push button type for those who want the clean minimalist look on their handlebars. Can Indian Motorcycles Be Saved?

A few weeks ago I posted my comments on the come back of Indian Motorcycles with new models to be released summer 2007. The two Harvard Business School classmates who resurrected Chris-Craft have a new plan to bring Indian back from the brink. Can this icon be saved? Yesterday, I found this very interesting article by Fortune’s Eugenia Levenson. Here a few highlights.

In a tiny hotel screening room in Miami, 20 friends and colleagues crowded around Stephen Julius and Steve Heese. It was February 2005, and they were there to watch a prerelease version of a film called "The World’s Fastest Indian." The movie featured Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins as the New Zealander who set a land-speed record on an Indian Scout motorcycle in the 1960s, but the group had gathered to see the film’s real star: the bike itself. When credits rolled, the room sprang to a standing ovation. For Heese and Julius, Indian’s new owners, the good news was that the fabled brand still resonated. The bad news? Indian, which the pair had bought out of bankruptcy a year earlier, wasn’t exactly ready for its close-up.

As Indian’s previous owners learned, reviving a so-called heritage brand is a rare and complicated undertaking. Classic brands can lose relevance if current models fail to live up to a storied past, but they also contain enormous potential for tapping into deep-seated loyalties. Julius and Heese thought Indian was due for a comeback too. "There are some brands you have to club to death for them to truly die," says Julius. And the pair, who met as classmates at HBS in the late ’80s, had more than case studies to draw on: They had spent the past four years turning around legendary boatmaker Chris-Craft, which had suffered a similar fall from grace. In mid-2004, with Chris-Craft headed toward calmer waters, Heese noticed another auction in the paper, this one for Indian. "The motorcycle market is bigger than the boating market," says Heese. "And there’s no question that motorcyclists are a passionate group. These are people who tattoo brand names on their body! There’s not another product category on earth that drives people to do that."Within days Julius’s private-equity firm swooped in with a bid, picking up intellectual property including trademarks, engineering and designs, as well as the tooling to manufacture Indian’s distinctive parts.

For the next two years the partners (Julius is chairman, Heese president) immersed themselves in every aspect of Indian’s production and marketing. "One of the beauties of these brands is that everybody will take your phone call," says Heese. "You wind up on a first-name basis with the biggest players in the industry."They got to know Indian’s former customers too. After sending out 2,500 surveys to former owners, they heard from nearly 1,000 about everything from engineering to design – and continue to receive close to 100 e-mails daily from people who want to play a part in the resurrection. They also moved Indian’s headquarters from California to North Carolina, where they were offered tax incentives and could draw from a NASCAR skilled-labor pool. (In January they’re opening a second Chris-Craft factory nearby, on the site of a former DaimlerChrysler subsidiary plant.) Indian’s first model – the Chief – won’t get to market till late 2007, so the turnaround is just beginning. But one thing’s for sure: For Julius and Heese, it’s already been a great ride.

Celebs And Motorcycle Appeal.

Bikes have always attracted celebrities. Here a list of a few of them who rode or ride because they love it.

Roy Rogers : the late king of the Cowboys’ movies rode motorcycles into his late years. Clark Gable: he had a 1938 Harley Knucklehead. He made the cover of a 1942 issue of Harley’s The Enthusiast. Elvis Presley: he owned several bikes but preferred his Harley. James Dean : he had a passion for 4 and 2 wheels. Owned 7 motorcycles when he was killed in a car accident at the age of 24. Lee Marvin: the movie tough guy who pitted his Harley-mounted gang against Marlon Brando’s Triumph-riding bunch in 1954’s "The Wild One". Rode his own motorcycles in desert races. Steve McQueen:he was a good rider able to do motorcycle stunt work in “The Great Escape”. He loved to participate in racing events. Malcolm Forbes: the Fortune Magazine publisher got addicted to bikes in the 50’s. He eventually had 70 bikes and his Harley Club was called the Capitalist Tools. Cher: always tried to get the bad-girl bike look. Owned a 94 Harley Fat Boy. Bob Dylan:had a motorcycle crash in 1966 and disappeared for many years. He says now that the accident caused him to reassess all his life. Lauren Hutton: the ex-supermodel is a longtime motorcycle enthusiast. Famous crash in 2000 at 110-mph during a ride with Dennis Hopper and members of the Guggenheim Motorcycle Club. Her helmet saved her beaitiful face. Ann Richards : the late Texas Governor celebrated her 60th birthday by getting her biker’s license. She had a Harley, and it made for good photo ops. Arnold Schwarzenegger:: we know he was riding a Harley Fat Boy in the “Terminator” but we didn’t know until a mini crash this year that he didn’t have the proper license to ride. Wesley Snipes : In 1994 he led Florida police on a 30-mile, 120-mph chase. As restitution he paid a fine and did community service. Lyle Lovett: states that he always hesitated between motorcycles and music. True? Gary Busey: the actor in “The Buddy Holly Story” was a bike enthusiast who actively campaigned against mandatory helmet laws. He made headlines in 1988 after a serious crash. He still rides with or witjout a helmet. Tim Mc Graw : the country singer used to ride a Harley on stage. I know because I started his bike for this purpose at his concert in Milwaukee during Harley 95th anniversary. Dan Aykroyd : the comedian has owned many motorcycles, even riding one in the funeral procession of John Belushi. He loved the bike I built called "Harley Blues" and sent me the picture above. Jay Leno : everybody is aware of his huge cars & bikes collection kept in a Burbank warehouse. He frequently participates to Harley rallies and charity events where he rides whatever the factory gives him to showcase..

Harley Night Rod Special The Blackest Sheep Of Them All.

I get this question all the time. “If you would ride a Harley every day, which one it would be?” 15 years ago, a black Fat Boy was my answer. Then nothing to my taste or very exciting during all these years. And now? Without hesitation the new V Rod called the Night Rod Special. It takes a few years for Harley-Davidson to catch up with some of the best trends launched by custom builders (wide rear tires, techno industrial black out macho look, pinstripes on wheels, etc) But when the Milwaukee factory does it, it does it right. The bike in black (actually there are 2 dual color schemes vivid black/black denim or black denim/vivid black) is a stunning machine to look at, and an exhilarating bike to ride. Like other VRSC-bikes, the Night Rod comes powered with the most powerful engine in Harley’s street bike range – the Porsche-developed 1130cc liquid-cooled V-twin. This pumps 79kW (107bhp) at 7950rpm, and 98Nm of torque at 6500 rpm. The Night Rod features a larger 5 gallon fuel tank Harley introduced last year in response to customer demand. With drag bars and new redesigned gauges, a 240 mm rear tire & a lowered suspension (the only way I want to go) putting the seat at 25.2” and the ground clearance at 4.2”, a great sound through chrome, straight-shot dual pipes; brushed mufflers with black end caps and black shields, the Night Rod is for me the most desirable “custom” factory bike.  I hear there is a waiting lis to get this one. Not surprised. Learn more at the Harley V Rod Section.

High Tech Hog Piggy Bank. Not From Harley.

Nothing against the Hog Piggy Bank from Harley, but I prefer this one to teach a child, or myself, how to save money. First, The Pig Electronic Bank looks great all in chrome. It doesn’t wear the Milwaukee logo but it features an LCD screen to teach the value of money. Deposit coins (pennies, nickels, dimes & quarters) and listen to the Pig E Bank tell you the total (in many funny voices). The Pig E Bank s very hungry, always want to swallow more, but don’t be surprised when you empty it (coin release is on the back side) if you are still short of $50.00 for what you saved for. I have one in my office and I don’t know why, everybody passing by feel obliged to drop a few quarters in it. Order one for you and all the kids you know. Pig E Bank

Seat Service From WCC

It’s no more necessary to ride a West Coast Choppers bike to own one of their original seats. Jesse James is now offering custom seats  individually hand made in their Long Beach shop. Three designs are offered: West Coast Choppers, Pay Up Sucker and Choppers For Life logos. Customers can order the seat pan in plain steel or fully chromed. WCC uses only high quality leather in natural, tan or black finishes. Each seat carries the company ID tag to show that you sit on the real thing, not on a cheap copy made in China. New seat styles are in development and will be available very soon. So, check back from time to time the website of West Coast Choppers.

FourBidden Exhaust

Look attentively at the picture and you will see that this exhaust system from Hooker is a four-into-one header. A low restriction reverse primary collector opens into four 1 3/8” pipes merging into a 3” four-into-one collector for awesome styling and aggressive sound (a removable baffle is included). Hooker states that this system adds 13 HP to a stock Harley Softail. You can chose between chrome plating and black ceramic coating. Exhaust tips are sold separately. Pick your style: side slash, turned out or down. They fit 86-06 left side drive Softails. I am not sure these FurBidden pipes are EPA approved but they look and sound very good. From Hooker Headers Inc.

Big Fashion Statement

Now you can ride and carry with you your biker’s music, your videos, and your Biker Build Off TV shows. The Brando watch is really a wild one and big like your bad ass bike. It packs some impressive features: you sync via your computer USB, can store 8 hours of music, MP3, WMA and MP4 videos. You play back your videos on a 128 x 128 pixels screen (good for the eyes of a baby boomer like me). At $98.00 it’s a great stocking stuffer for the upcoming holiday season. Brando MP4 Watch – Video Killed the MP3 Star [Gizmodo]

Chick, Chick, Chick.

These sinners of O School Choppers in Vegas know how to build a chopper. They even found out a new way to do it. They hired 3 chicks to do it. How I didn’t think about this? They gave them freedom to create what they wanted, a bike lift, tools and parts. They let them argue during 2 months (do they argue more that a boys team?), and at the end a cool chopper was born. During 2 months they watched the bike in progress and the girls at work through the eye of a camera (because it’s more exciting and I agree). Enough to produce 11 episodes of a TV show running on internet TV. The 1st one was just released and, as a teaser, you can see Maegen, Rio & Kim conceiving their chopper project by going To Chopper Chicks TV.

Wanted

You are looking at the picture of the pride of Ray Wheeler. A ton of hours/dollars 159" bad boy bike made to go very fast at the Fun Drags of Sacramento. It did. With 0 traction, Ray made two 11 second passes at 125 miles per hour. Wow! Ray had a great day. But after spending the night in a million dollars hotel, Ray woke up to find out that his truck/trailer/bike was gone with somebody else. There is reward offered for anyone helping recover his pride. Every week I have 4500 different enthusiasts visiting my Blog. Hope that one of you know, saw, heard something about this crime. Harley-Davidson Night Rod Special Sells for $800,000

This evening, I really wonder if I should move my custom building business to Quatar, this small Arab Emirate in the Middle East. The reason? During a star-studded fundraising dinner in the city of Doha, a VRSCDX Night Rod Special, became one of the most expensive of its kind when it fetched a staggering $800,000. The event was to raise money to help UNESCO promote education and community programs across Asia. The new owner of the $800,000 Harley-Davidson Nigh Rod Special is the Prince of Quatar. I checked my Blog subscribers list and the Prince email is not there. How do I get it? I really need Royal attention. If the Prince is such an enthusiast for factory motorcycles, I wonder how much he would bid for one of my customs. By the way, the price he paid is still $100 short of the highest amount ever spent on a Harley, a Road King auctioned by Jay Leno on the Tonight Show to raise money for the victims of the 2004 Asian Tsunami disaster. My decision is taken. My next article will be posted from Qatar.

Motorcycles To Tow Away Vehicles

When I read the story, I thought it was a joke. A good one. But it’s not. The news comes from Dubai, Arab Emirates. Retriever Motorcycles will be used to tow cars that break down on congested roads. I didn’t know that this service has already shown remarkable success in other countries such as Canada, Sweden and China. The advantage of using a Retriever Bike is that it can move smoothly between vehicles in the crowded streets (always heard not to do this with my bike!).The Retriever Bikes are only about 59 inch wide (Still dangerous to do this between cars in heavy traffic). Bikes have powerful 6-cylinder engines, and are equipped with a folding lift and are able to tow most cars. I always dreamed to have my big SUV towed by a motorcycle. Not you?

World’s Fastest Bagger

Custom builder Brian Klock will remember 2006 as an exceptional year for him & his dedicated crew. First, Brian was invited to participate in a Discovery Channel Biker Build Off. Second, he won this TV competition with a custom Bagger, which was very unusual since all competitors until now prefer to show their skills on high tech radical customs or retro (May I say neo retro?) builds. After his victory, Brian felt like having wings. So, he decided to take his Build Off winning Bagger to the Bonneville Salt Flats to make some speed testing. Brian’s a gentleman, so he asked his fiancée Laura Ellifson to pilot his custom bagger on the flats (she is not a beginner, far from it). When the flag man called a speed, Laura 1st pass came back at 137.575 mph. After attempting a total of 6 passes, the custom bike was clocked at 147.359 mph, a new AMA national record for the fastest bagger. Laura & Brian impressed so much each other (him with his build, her with her speed) that after the race he proposed to her and she accepted. Congrats! Although Brian Klock has built bikes of all styles in his shop of Mitchell, South Dakota, he has always been the “Bagger Guy”.  2006 is not over. So, Brian is busy at designing & manufacturing a new line of WFB (World’s Fastest Bagger) parts specifically designed for touring models. Go to visit him on your bagger or speed to his Kustom Baggers website.

Paint: Flat & Satin Black Are In. Glossy Black Is Out.

Motorcycle & car custom builders have used black primer for decades to log the progress of their fabrication work. Why? Because of the “flop”.  A flat black has a beautiful “flop”, the contrast between the light side and dark side of a surface. For designers & fabricators, it’s the best way to appreciate the purity & beauty of a line, of a form, of a surface.  Since many years, flat black, instead of shiny paint jobs, has also been used as the finishing paint, or as accent, on new custom motorcycles and cars, but occasionally, to accentuate the retro look of a style or model. During these last 3 years, we saw a resurgence of flat black paint on Bobber motorcycles and Rat Rod Cars & Trucks (with or without the use of pinstripes). During the chrome excess of the 90’s, more & more custom bikes went looking like Christmas trees: there was so much chrome and glossy painted surfaces that shiny parts were reflecting in shiny parts, reflecting in more shining parts. Result: body lines, even as beautiful they could be, disappeared in an ocean of blinding lights.  In reaction, the sinister look is back. But there are 2 potential dangers. Flat black poorly executed conveys poor quality for the vehicle (please, don’t use BBQ spray can, except if it’s your theme). And if everybody embraces the matte black look at the same time it’s going to be very boring to the eyes. Partial answer: using semi gloss black or mixing different shines of black. By the way, there is a new trend running in parallel of the black look. The steel look, burnished or not. But it will be for another post in this Blog.

Dakota Digital Gear Gauge. You Need One?

I don’t know about you. But even when I ride a new bike he doesn’t take me a long time to learn & remember the music of my gear shifting. Yes, from time to time I may have difficulties finding the neutral and I can also miss a gear. But so what? I understand that not every rider thinks like me and that they will always need a new gadget like this Gear Gauge conceived by Dakota Digital. So, you ride and you are wondering what gear you’re in? This auto programming gear position indicator will tell you the truth, whatever gear you’re in, including neutral. Auto programming means that after you hook it up (of course you need an electronic speed signal), you ride through all the gears and you are done. This is cool. I don’t like gauges, but must admit that the design is elegant with its blue LED light in a small package with integrated mounting bracket in sizes 7/8”, 1”, 1.1/4” or 1.1/2”. If you need one go to Dakota Digital.

Dead Gorgeous: Lethal Injection Pipes

The Lethal Injection pipes are one of the nicest looking sets available. In addition to good looks, the pipes have features that I never saw before being offered by any custom exhaust manufacturers. First, the pipes are made of stainless steel and polished to a high shine. Second the Lethal Injection pipes have welded on exhaust flanges with high-temp O-ring seals so there are no more snap rings or clamps to deal with. Because of the welded flanges, when bolted to the head there is no need for any external mounting. Another great feature of these pipes was taken directly from NASCAR technology: the front pipe has a built-in slip-fit which allows the stainless steel to expand as it heats without binding or weeping. This technology also makes it fully adjustable to fit a variety of motors. One year ago, I used them in black for one of my customs called “Peacemaker”. Check them out in my Website at the page “Custom Bikes”. Then, go to order them from Precious Metal Customs. Tel: 678-494-4150

Steve McQueen’s Crocker Motorcycle Sold For $276,500

Cars, trucks, motorcycles and memorabilia from McQueen’s widow Barbara and other collectors were put up for sale last Saturday at the Petersen Automotive Museum. A 1937 Crocker brought in $276,500, the biggest price of the day and a world record for a Crocker motorcycle. A 1934 Indian Sport Scout went for $177,500, and a 1920 Indian Power Plus Daytona brought in $150,000. Steve McQueen was into motorcycles and race cars long before it became hip in Hollywood to do so. He also raced professionally. At one point he considered doing car racing full time,. His passion for racing and fast machines was more than a publicity move, as it seems to have become for today’s actors. His most famous movie moments include a mad motorcycle dash in "The Great Escape," (but it was not him jumping the fences with his motorcycle) and a car chase through the streets of San Francisco in film "Bullitt."

How To Sell Your Custom Motorcycle On eBay

First, let me say that according to research by Terapeak, Harley-Davidson merchandise on eBay this past year have topped $30,000,000 for parts and accessories alone, not counting Harley motorcycles and full blown custom bikes. Second, Harley-Davidson has consistently been the top ranked search term on eBay’s Pulse, which lists the top 10 search terms for every category listed o eBay. Additional research shows that February has the most sales for everything Harley motorcycles. So, what about custom motorcycles? About the same results than the ones obtained when listing a Harley-Davidson (of course price makes a difference). OCC Invests 13.5 Millions In Custom Motorcycles Plant

Seems like Orange County Choppers is going to capitalize on its brand name  made famous by the TV reality series "American Chopper," They are going to invest 13.5 millions to build a  plant and and should create 160 new jobs (up from just 12 now). The Teutul family’s business should be a 92,000 square foot plant in the town of Newburgh in NY state mid-Hudson Valley. The new jobs will be added over the next 3 years as the company ramps up production of custom-built motorcycles in the $40,000 price range. Not bad for a custom builder who started to do business in 1999. Since father and son team Paul Teutul Sr. and Paul Teutul Jr. still remember who I am, in case of unforeseen difficulty, I have a job in NY. Yippee. Orange County Choppers.

New Round Inline Fuel Valve

Custom builders are very familiar with this problem. We build custom bikes with hand built one-off custom gas tanks. Then we have to figure out where to position the fuel valve on the gas tank. And it never happens that the best position to install it (the lowest part of the tank to use all gas capacity) is possible (for example interfering with a rocker box), or it creates a visual sore when looking at the tank. So, I like the new in-line fuel valve from Pingel. No more worry about the location of the fuel valve. Install it where it looks good between your tank & the carburetor. It’s small, round, smooth & beautiful. But be aware that this valve uses simple on/off operation without a reserve position and no filter. But do we really need these functions This in-line fuel valve from Pingel belongs to all my new projects.  .

Exhaust Systems Looking For Choppers

With 2 pipes, how many exhaust designs can you create? Well, it seems that there is no limit. A company in Miami called Wanted Choppers just released 5 interesting new designs for both left & right side applications for Evo & Twin Cam engine bikes from 96 to 07. The pipes are built from .065 mandrel bent steel and all mounting hardware is included. They are offered in chrome or black ceramic coated, and even wrapped if you wish the retro Bobber look. I can only show you one picture (NFA model), but if you go to the Wanted Choppers Website, you will see the exhaust I prefer. It’s called the "Money Shot". Don’t buy an exhaust without checking first the ones of Billy The Kid. 305-406-3004 or info@wantedchoppers.com.
