I guess it’s the way my new hosting company is blackmailing me for more money for more server capacity. We work on this issue and I apologize.

David Uhl Pays Homage To Pappy Hoel Founder Of The Sturgis Black Hills Rally

daviduhlpappyhoel

Armed with his brushes and immense talent, artist David Uhl records a new important page of motorcycle history, J.C. Pappy Hoel on his beloved Indian motorcycle front of his Sturgis dealership. And of course it’s no accident that this superb painting is released the year the Black Hills Rally is going to celebrate its 70th Anniversary. For all those who visit Sturgis or dream to, follows a short biography of the man who is credited as its founder.

He loved motorcycles. Some would argue that he loved Indian motorcycles best, but from an early age his life was consumed by bikes and the people who rode them. He was a motorcycle dealer and race promoter, but his lasting legacy is the Black Hills Classic Rally held annually in Sturgis.

Born in South Dakota in 1904, he grew up working in his family’s ice business.  In 1936, he purchased an Indian franchise and opened his motorcycle shop in Sturgis. The following year, he founded the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club. In 1938 the 1st rally attracted 200 participants. Camping was provided in Pappy and wife Pearl back yard behind their Indian Motorcycle Shop on Junction Avenue. Corporate Tax Advice For Motorcycle Business Owners

Like me, you must send your 2009 business tax return to the IRS  before March 15. Last weekend, talking to 2 friends of the industry who had a difficult time with their businesss in 2009, I was surprised that they didn’t know that  under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, any business owners who has been losing money recently can claim a tax refund against taxes paid in profitable years. It’s called “loss carry back.” and it’s a boost from the Federal stimulus program that you can’t ignore. Continue reading ‘Corporate Tax Advice For Motorcycle Business Owners’

usfreedomIt will a first this coming weekend February 27-28 in Daytona Beach at the Volusia County Fairgrounds, the inaugural Biker Rally For Freedom. And because it’s Bike week, in addition to multiple speakers, workshops and seminars there will be the usual rally entertainment with food, vendors and bands. Admission is $5.00 per day. Erik Buell Racing. A Brand New Erik Buell.

erikbuell1erikbuell2The liquidation sale of all Buell Motorcycle Company is still going on, and during this time, in a small shop close by in the same East Troy city, Wisconsin, Erik Buell and 7 employees are already working hard at building his new company Erik Buell Racing (new website still in construction). When Harley-Davidson decided to focus on its own business and shut down the Buell Motorcycle Co. a job as an adviser in Harley engineering department was offered to Erik. He declined the offer and instead got from Harley a license to continue building Buell motorcycles, but for racing use only, not street riding. Continue reading ‘Erik Buell Racing. Klock Werks New Downforce Harley-Davidson Windshields

KlockWerksWindshield
At this year’s V-Twin Expo Klock Werks proposed its FLARE Windshield in a new 8.5″ high size, in 3 versions: tint, dark smoke and black (3.5″, 8.5″ and 11.5″ FLARE Windshields are also available for different touring models). The company was also showing for the 1st time a FLARE version for Harley Softails and Road Kings.

The FLARE windshield was named last year one of the “Products Of The Year” at the same V-Twin Expo because of its ability to increase down force versus a stock windshield.  Originally it was developed out of a desire/need for stability at highway speeds and for racing on the Bonneville Salt Flats. New “Two Wheel Thunder” Motorcycle TV Show With Michelle Smith And Jay Barbieri

michellesmithJayBarbieriWhile at the V-Twin Expo, talked to Jay Barbieri who informed me about his new TV venture. After a decade and a half on the SPEED Channel hosting “American Thunder” Michele Smith and Jay Barbieri are moving to the Discovery Network’s HD Theater channel with a new TV show named “Two Wheel Thunder”. As far as I understand the new show format seems to be similar to what they were doing on SPEED. They were in Cincinnati shooting and interviewing and will be in Daytona during Bike Week (Feb. 26th to March 7th) hunting for new bikes and parts for the 1st episode debuting April 12, 2010 during “Motorcycle Mondays”. iPhone Applications For Bikers

iphoneappiphoneapp1iphoneapp3More than 150,000 iPhone applications to choose from. And just a couple created specifically for bikers to help them plan their trips to spend more time riding and less finding their way. As a matter of fact these 2 applications are almost the same because the “Harley-Davidson” one is based on the “MAD Maps” application. These very similar iPhone applications (only $0.99 each to download from iTunes) give you all the essentials you may need on the road. Not only the fastest way to go from A to B but the most scenic routes and attractions that they know bikers will enjoy. There is a choice of 1000 rides within the continental US, turn by turn directions, points of interest, and of course the location of all Harley-Davidson dealers and Best Western Hotels, the chain affiliated with Harley for a reward program. Nothing better for $0.99. Download here.

Arlen Ness 40th Year Anniversary Custom Parts Catalog

arlenness2010catalogWhen you spend 40 years in the motorcycle business you become the collective memory of our industry. Wish Arlen would put on my desk, in chronological order, all catalogs he has produced during 4 decades (I am certain that he kept preciously a few samples of each). I would not miss reading any page, probably amazed by the way custom motorcycles and parts have evolved since he entered the business in the 70’s, first as an enthusiast. The Return Of The Mororcycle Tool Bag

toolbagfrenchbaggettDon’t look further. It’s because of today’s old school trend that tool bags are back as the new accessory to complete your bike.

Either for looks or for necessity or both, it doesn’t’ hurt to carry with you the basic tools to resolve some common mechanical issues. The Nash Motorcycle Company offers a new refreshed design called the “Baggett Tool Bag”,  looking pretty good when hung on your rear frame tubes (of course, mention right or left when ordering).
